In this episode we explore what to do or not do, what to eat or not eat , all in our quest to stay healthy!    Staying healthy during the winter months can be difficult, but it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Winter typically means more time spent indoors and a time when germs are easily spread—this can lead us to get sick more frequently. Luckily, there are ways to prevent illness and stay healthy all year round, so you do things you’d like to do, rather than stay at home sick with a cold.

In this episode, we had the great pleasure of having two trailblazers share with us their inspiring journey with sports and advice on how to lead a more active, healthier lifestyle. This show was in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester, more information at:

Anna Stishova is a Russian convert to Islam and a female paddler living in Bolton.
She started paddling (kayaking and rafting) in Russia as a teenager. After moving to UK, she had a quiet and not very active life. She rediscovered paddling years later in London at a local canoe club. White water kayaking at that moment was very male-dominated, especially on the river trips, so she decided to switch to marathon flat water racing. It was more organised, structured and respectful, and there were many women competing on entry levels.
In 2017 she attempted her first Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Marathon Race as the only hijabi woman in the race. She competed another two times in that race since.
She qualified as a paddlesports instructor (PSI) and became a #ShePaddles Ambassador with British Canoeing last year to encourage more Muslim women and girls to take up paddling. She is also a member of the Inclusion Advisory Group (IAG) for British Canoeing, where they help to develop an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy plan for British Canoeing for years to come.
This summer, with Anderton Centre, she held the first ever UK Family Eid Paddle Event, where many Muslim families came and tried kayaking and Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP).
In addition, she also set up the Muslim Girls Paddle Sports Club - with monthly sessions between July and October to allow Muslim girls and women to try the paddlesports like SUP and kayaking in a female-only group led by female coaches. Definitely a woman to follow!

For decades, researchers have said that saturated fat in a person’s diet can cause potential harm. Recommendations have typically pointed to a “low fat” diet as the best way to reduce the risk for heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases. However, other researchers now argue that saturated fats may not be as inherently harmful and can be included as part of a health-promoting diet. Angela and Safiya go through the latest findings, and benefits of fats for your health, and put back fats where they belong: on your plate. This episode was first broadcast on 15th June 2022 on Heritage Radio.

Cardio, everyone talks about it, everyone seems to be doing it, but what is it exactly and do we truly need it? Angela & Safiya explore this crucial question with mobility specialist Hamza Jonce.

Hamza Jonce finds it very difficult to define himself or to select a specific job title, which would clearly explain what he does, as he has numerous related qualifications and is always reviewing and upgrading his skills and knowledge. He is never stationary.

Having been naturally into sports as a child and young person Jonce Hamza initially trained as a sports therapist and personal trainer. He quickly realised that there was a lot missing and that fitness as a goal on its own without addressing problems with posture, quality of movement and indeed nutrition was very short-sighted and would lead to further health problems, injuries, and imbalances. This lit a spark inside him and lead to his infinite purpose of striving to find ways to help himself and others to function at their optimum potential, and to become the movement specialist he is now.

Topics:
Definition of the word 'cardio-vascular system' vs 'cardio' in the modern fitness world, basic exercises; fast-twitch/slow-twitch muscles, endurance
What's the best approach for general health and weight loss
Don't miss great tips from Hamza he gives in the last 10 mins to improve your mobility, and integrate movement into your daily life!
