Initiated by singer-songwriter Camila Vick, The.BlkRoom was created as a haven for artists within her circle to foster their creativity. A close friend of Camila's, Senite Barih, who was heavily involved in performing and recording at the time, sought a space for her own creative endeavors and became a frequent patron. Since then, a beautiful partnership started.

Since the emergence of The.BlkRoom, through strong partnership, Camila and Senite diligently strive to enhance its success by drawing upon their shared passion and firsthand experiences as up-and-coming artists and creatives in the city. Their collaborative efforts aim to narrow the divide between opportunity and achievement for Chicago's artistic community. This began with the establishment of a safe and nurturing space, and has since evolved to include the curation of workshops, events, performances, and various other avenues for artists and creatives of all stripes to thrive and succeed in their respective mediums.

Bio: Sophia has cinema in her blood. She was born and raised in Hong Kong and her parents were part of Hong Kong’s bustling film industry in the 1950’s-1970’s. Her father Wong Tsao-she, or Wang Zhao-xi, was an award-winning editor with the Motion Picture and General Investment Co. Ltd, which later became Cathay Organization (HK) Ltd. Sophia’s mother Yu Wan-fei , was an actress with Sil-Metropole Organization Ltd. Growing up in a “film family,” Sophia became both interested in, and an advocate for, Asian film.

But it was in the early 1990’s where that love of film launched her own career in the industry. While working in Beijing, Sophia launched a Sophia’s Choice movie series, bringing Chinese films and cultural exchange with the film’s actors and directors to Beijing’s expatriate and diplomatic community.

During a two-year stay in Sydney in the late 1990’s Sophia curated two independent retrospective Chinese and Hong Kong film festivals on behalf of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office and the People’s Republic of China Consulate in the city. In 1999, Sophia also became the Hong Kong Consultant for Italy’s Udine Far East Film Festival (FEFF). She continues to support the festival as the official Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese translator for the festival’s VIP guests.

In 2000, Sophia relocated to Chicago with her husband, Michael, and they have made Chicago their permanent home. Inspired by Chicago’s diverse and vibrant culture, Sophia applied her business acumen to supporting Chicago’s arts community. She was Managing Director of the Chicago International Film Festival (2000-2007), Executive Director of Fulcrum Point New Music Project (2007-2013), and Managing Director of Redmoon Theater (2013-2014).

She launched Sophia’s Choice as a non-profit vehicle for the biannual Chicago film festival, Asian Pop-Up Cinema, in 2015.

As well as her years of expertise curating and promoting Asian film, Sophia has extensive business experience. Before she made cinema her number one passion, she spent a decade working for Swiss multinational Marc Rich & Co. as Managing Director of its Hong Kong and Beijing offices. She also worked as the Beijing-based Country Director of a U.S. agribusiness trade association.

Tx-Watt Amps was conceived and founded by Jack Kay of Buda, Texas (just outside of Austin). As a touring musician in the 60’s and 70’s, Jack played primarily on Marshalls and kept several of them in the truck so he always had one available. Whenever one broke, he would cannibalize one of the Marshall carcasses for parts to keep others running. The lack of quality in commercially made amplifiers always surprised him. Marshall rigs were by no means cheap.

This led to the dream of someday building a “guitar player’s” amp. Sound and tone would be the only focus. Cost of the build would not be a factor. As a Texas boy, the first name that came up was Texas Watt. He realized that was too long and shortened it to Tx-Watt. When his record label folded around 1980, he came home and did nothing with the idea for more than 30 years. (NOTE: the original/legacy 70’s logo and the story behind it, is still available by request)

Many years later, he revived the Tx-Watt idea, contacted old friends whose life works were in analog amplification, transformers, speakers, and cabinets. After Several more years of R&D and road testing, Tx-Watt was born.

Tx-Watt received patents on the designs that make their amplifiers. The patent applies to the Tx-Watt Flagship/signature Series, the Tx-Watt Tube Hybrid Guitar Amp and the Tx-Watt Tube Hybrid Bass Amp. Apparently, there really “Ain’t Nothin’ Else Like It !

Bio: Rob was fortunate enough to discover his passion for music at an early age. He gravitated towards the power and emotions that music can bring about when listening. This passion lead him into the world of music licensing as the third employee of a music licensing start up where he developed his “get it done” working style. Among multiple hats worn at an early start-up, his main objective was focusing on building an artist community that appeals to some of the world’s largest brands and networks. During the 8+ years at that licensing agency, Rob continuously used the power of independent artists to amplify global and national campaigns for Coca-Cola, Hasbro, Fanta, Airbnb, Dasani & more. This not only proved his ability to connect the dots between artists and brands but it strengthened the love for what music can do emotionally to consumers.

Seeing first-hand the power brands have on millions of people with one song and campaign helped lead to the creation of Songfinch in 2016. Rob helps independent artists get paid doing what they love while giving the average person the ability to experience the emotions music gives on a more intimate, one-on-one level. Rob continues to dedicate his life to building connections through music while always having musician’s best interests in mind.

If you look for the Berlin-based, Finland-bred producer Jonas Verwijnen, you’re most likely to find him on a flight to a new country with a new project and a vision in mind. Wearing his signature beanie, of course, regardless of the climate of the said country. In many ways, he was always meant to be an international explorer after being born into a Dutch-Finnish family in Switzerland and raised in Finland. Brought up in Helsinki, Jonas went to study music production in the Finnish capital, then ended up working at the local recording establishment Seawolf Studios. Located in a Russian 19th century military barrack in Helsinki harbour, he established himself as a producer and an engineer in this rather unique environment. All which swiftly led to him setting up his first studio.

At 25, Jonas relocated to his current adopted hometown, Berlin, and founded Kaiku Studios. Ever since setting up Kaiku alongside business partner Janne Lounatvuori, Jonas has ceaselessly continued to work with both established international acts like Kings of Convenience, Jason Spaceman, Moon Duo, Washed Out, Wolf Parade as well as Spencer Krug’s Moonface project, Liima and Siinai. Not to mention a whole host of exciting newcomers like Ballet School and P2X.

Jonas’ innate understanding of music derives from his multi-instrumentalist background that can be heard throughout his richly layered discography. Versatile in genres and sounds, his production, mixing and mastering CV is a token of his love for music and exploration. Jonas’ musical savviness, mixed with his vast knowledge of recording equipment ranging from vintage to the very latest, allow him to navigate the most intricate layers of music production. His hands-on attitude and personable character is what makes him a producer that’s not just the guy with a red hat standing behind the desks but a member of an extended musical family.

As a unique extension of his technical work, Jonas has ran international residencies with a number of bands, one of the most notable being Liima’s residency at Ian Schrager’s London EDITION in summer 2016. Hosted in the basement of the hotel, the 4AD signees opened a temporary studio where guests were invited to watch the quartet experiment and craft new music in front of them, culminating in a big show at the end of the week. This is a perfect example of where Jonas goes above and beyond the traditional producer role, creating a one-of-a-kind experience that feels fresh, new and thoroughly relevant. This particular event was complimented by Jonas pulling together sponsorship from Patrón Tequila and furniture by Fritz Hansen, producing a multi-brand sonic experience elevating Liima’s innovative music. Wallpaper Magazine praised the event, saying that it “hit all the high notes”.

Right up to date, Jonas is set to work on another residency with the UK band SULK in collaboration with the producer legend Dave M. Allen (The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Human League). In addition, he’s kept himself busy working with two new releases by the Portland twosome Moon Duo and Jason Spaceman’s collaboration with Chilean cosmic rockers Föllakzoid. Both to be released under the revered experimental Brooklyn label Sacred Bones (John Carpenter, David Lynch, Zola Blood), Jonas’ forthcoming year is looking as thrilling as ever.
