Interlocking Stabilized Soil Blocks
These are made by compacting soil, marram, sand and cement in a compacting machine.
Advantages of ISSBs compared to ordinary bricks.
They are made on site hence no cost of transportation.
Their Interlocking feature and uniformity of blocks makes savings on cement and sand in construction and plastering.
They have a wide range of unique finishing like varnishing, direct painting and low cost plastering due to their uniform nature
They are environmental friendly because don’t involve deforestation or burning of trees.
They are made in different sizes and shapes, molds compared top fired bricks.

InnovationConsortium is spearheading the implementation of this technology.

Lately Shipping containers are being re-purposed into a wide range of functions and on this Episode of #NotSoComplicated we discuss how #InnovationConsortium is championing the recycling of Shipping containers into cheaper sustainable construction options.
Upcycling in construction is the new trend, and the leading application, is the reuse of shipping containers into shelter typologies.
Already  improvised as site storage, in this episode we tell you how we take this concept further and merge it with our other innovations and technologies to design commercial and residential spaces, and look to a future of container assemblies forming sports stadiums and grander projects.

InnovationConsortium is championing the use of affordable, sustainable and environmentally friendly innovative construction technologies and on this episode, we explain PRECAST SLAB construction technology.

As the name suggests, precast slab is designed, cast and made off site then after it’s assembled on site which saves you labour and time.
Unlike conventional slabs, precast slab doesn’t require max pans. It also saves on cement, sand, timber and steel reinforcement bars.
All this translates to a minimum 30% saving compared conventional slabs

Thin shell concrete construction technology is a cheap but sustainable construction technology used for constructing walls and roofing.
It is a building technology that relies on the use of concrete under tension to make roof or walls. The tension is achieved by stretching a mesh over an inorganic cloth layer and pouring a thin layer of concrete. Advantages include;
Sound heat insulation
Cost: it is cheaper than the more traditional materials like iron sheets and tiles. It can save about 25% of what iron sheets costs and about 50% cheaper than tiles. This is because it uses cheaply available local materials: mesh, cement, sand, timber and cloth.
Shape/ Aesthetic: The hyperbola gives a more interesting shape to most conventional roofs. Also it gives you the skylight option to bring in light.
Since it uses less timber in it, the roof area remains with enough space to give more headroom or to be utilized for extra storage.
Humanitarian solution: Because the materials used are locally and cheaply available, TSC can be used to provide short term housing solutions to disaster areas. If designed and installed with the purpose, it is possible to make it movable as well from one area disaster struck area to another.

The Refugee Innovation and Sustainable Enterprise-Urban Project (RISE-UP) is a social enterprise by #InnovationConsortium that uses sustainable and innovative business models to create economic opportunities for urban refugees. Urban refugees are empowered with relevant professional skills in various technical fields (construction, fabrication, baking, driving, Hair dressing, solar systems, multi-media, automotive repair, ICT, fashion and design). We provide a platform for marketing the products of these trainings and support linkages for the attained skills to their possible employment opportunities

The ever expanding population settlements and unpredictable climate changes have led to scarcity of pastures. And to solve this challenge, Innovation Consortium designed and made a silage and hay machine.

▫This machine is unique and effective in a way that it processes both fresh and dry feeds

▫It processes a ton (1000Kgs) of silage/hay in one hour consuming 1 litre of fuel.

▫The machine is durable because it is fabricated out of the hardest metallic material on the market which is steel.

▫Since the silage/hay machine is  produced locally, its very easy to operate, repair and maintain avoiding the need for special expensive technicians as with the case of imported machines

▫This machine is equally efficient and 50% cheaper than imported hay machines.

Our team invented an award winning Hybrid Silage and Hay machine. And on this episode of #NotSoComplicated, we explain this innovation in a not so complicated way.

Football 4 Peace is a campaign that was initiated by #InnovationConsortium to harness the all-engulfing power of football to influence positive change in society. Using short animated video clips and live games, this campaign promotes messages of peace, equality, justice and human rights awareness. The just concluded Ugandan presidential elections and social-interaction limitations brought about by the pandemic were the main factors that birthed this campaign. Though take note that this campaign is still ongoing and has been edited to encompass more positive community messages.

On this episode, we discuss yet another innovation called the Step Tap and its lower version the Tip Tap, both these taps are hands-free washing facilities.
STEP TAP is a mechanical device that is fixed to any hand washing facility to give you a hands free washing experience. It only requires the user to step on the pedal for the water to flow and release the pedal to stop water flow.  Why STEP TAP;

▫Ordinary Taps ease the spread of germs from one user to another since their use involves touching the knob for both opening and closing which easily leaves germs and dirt on the nobs spreading it to the next user

▫Reduced water bill because it eliminates any water wastage due to loosely tightened knobs and wastages between opening, washing and closing.

▫Easy to use for handicapped people and children since it eliminates the height challenge that comes with ordinary taps

▫It’s for these reasons that the innovation consortium designed tested and improved version of the wash basin called a step tap.

▫It can be modified and used for industrial applications

This episode is about "Covid-19 awareness project that was and is still being implemented by the innovation consortium.
Innovation Consortium uses innovation as a driving force to implement a number of social initiative projects and the "Covid-19 awareness project" is one of such projects.
This episode talks about this project.
Combined with our innovations specifically the STEP TAP and TIP TAP, we disseminate Covid-19 prevention and treatment messages. We also setup FREE communal hands-free washing and sanitizing points in places of gatherings like markets, Local Council offices, taxi parks and places of worship. This project was piloted  in Kira Municipality communities.

BYUUMA APP is an innovation by #INNOVATION CONSORTIUM that was designed to create a link between creative artisans, dealers, their services/products and their customers. it's an online market for machine parts, industrial accessories and supplies.
Uganda's industrial landscape is strongly anchored by a vast informal sector. This has been the birthplace of innovation and training ground of the valuable skillset for the past 20 years. The industrial sector, especially big industry is still propped up by products and skills from this sector, because of the restrictive cost of foreign inputs, technology and specialist knowledge. The spirit of prototyping and innovation is alive and thriving here, given the prevalence of small, to medium sized industrial typologies in Uganda. these small machines, drive Uganda’s industrial revolution, and are kept working by the informal sector.
Innovation Consortium realized this and engaged to ease access to this rich resource, and open it up to the market. BYUUMA App is a tool that creates a direct connection, through information technology, between the informal industrial sector, and the bigger, international market.
By removing the geographical and physical restrictions faced by the tradesmen in the informal sector, BYUUMA app will bring this sector to the fore and set a foundation to formalise and develop this resource.

Kungula’ is a motorized machine for removing maize grain from the cob. The thresher helps reduce threshing time while increasing efficiency (reducing wastage), all at an affordable cost translating into increased yields and improved post-harvest value to create better leverage in markets and sustainable farming methods for farmers. Traditional threshing methods like hand threshing or pilling of maize in sacks and hitting it with sticks are very inefficient, laborious and time wasting. The resulting quality of the maize grain is very low since dust and broken cobs make up a substantial percentage of the final product. We have designed a mortised threshing machine dubbed KUNGULA that threshes and winnows maize at a rate of 1000kg/hr/litre of fuel with a 99.9% threshing efficiency and 98.2% whole grain ratio
