At The Gong: Recent Episodes

Ed Barr-Sim & Rob Kingston

Fans review of the best TV show on earth: University Challenge. Weekly takedown of this institutional classic with player of the match, granny's favourite, unfounded speculation on team dynamics and delight at some really excellent questions.

The best place for Quizzers everywhere. From Paxman to Rajan, from Proust to Fusion, from Disraeli to 42 we've got you covered

Class is starting to show and the questions fell this week for Brown.

Royal Holloway stormed ahead of a reasonably disjointed Robert Gordon.

We get into old teams, questions falling for ones own self and who is class.

Player of the Match - Brown

Granny's Favourite - Harvey

A good old fashioned thumping from a lovely spread of a team in Durham. They're nice and all but I have to say this wasn't end of season quality. We're desperate for the next stage.

Gongs:

Player of the Match - Durham, Radcliffe

Granny's Favourite - Durham, Bennett

Twitter Generator - Bangor, Silcocks

An odd little episode. Something to keep the feed ticking along.

A rip roaring game where both sides lead at points. UCL (the people's favourite), mothers and sons, Salmons, heroes and the true joy of it brought them in to the finish.

There's a smidge of conspiracy here but more classy quizzing. There's potential finalists here.

We do not hold any responsibility for the colds we are suffering under.

It was a McLaughlin show this week and that's just the way he likes it. Listening back we were really quite kind to him over all, but so was the scoreboard. We must respect knowledge when we see.

I can't believe we've had another tie! Nothing short of absolute scenes

Rob and Ed are both hooked on all things Newnham now. Somehow they stole the hearts and yet they only won by 5 points.

Things are hotting up and people are winning repeat gongs

Player of the Math: Newnham, Ellis

Granny's Favourite: Newnham, Holloway-Strong

A return to the new year, to our routines and University Challenge. It's wonderful to be back and healthy again.

Robert Gordon split the room - Rob and Ed couldn't agree. But they triumphed all the same

God love you Courtald, you don't know how beautiful you all look!

We had debutants in the competition which is the real story of the week. Heroic for Barb (former winner) to have the presence of mind to realise that it was worth having a documentary let into his life just as his University was pitching for the top spot.

We had Rob proving yet again that having watched lots of episodes helps you get extra points

And a roaring victory for Robert Gordon. Next time it's the second round so we look forward to seeing some familiar faces.

We had such a nice time this week, it was a really lovely episode with quality across the park. So many nice clothes, smiles and questions.

Yes Courtald won in the end (with lots of science answers) but Newnham did so well that I think they could win a few more rounds. We for 2 at least are very excited to see them again.

Player of the Match - Mackarel

This was more fun at home than on screen this week. The gongs are hard to choose but the important bit - the reactions, the humanity - oh the humanity - are as sophisticated as ever.

Nottingham scrap through by just 10 points but how did that pass us all by.

What is it about watching UC when we just can't remember what happened? Those scores of players over the years who's passed us by

Southampton took the victory, the 'underdog'? Who are you rooting for?

The main point is UC is now on a bloody Tuesday. What the heck is going on at BBC HQ?

Jesus didn't care. They demolished St Catherine's. A humourless professional mercenary display.

I've had to reassess my first impressions as there was quality from wing to wing of Jesus college Cambridge.

The first match of real quality in the season. So much to talk about on and off the buzzer. This went right do to gong and in fact beyond the gong as we had a tie.

We were so fired up with the days play we forgot all about Granny's favourite. I was buzzing all the way through it

The ebbs and flows of life, all is contained in University Challenge

After missing out on a recording last week because 1 of us was abroad we were back amongst it, back in to that sweet routine of UC.

This was a tough watch actually without a huge amount of quality on display but we have a whole new angle on Twitter magnet, sensible Granny's favourite and one guest who's destination wedding just got a whole lot smarter.

We hear from a whole new University (to us at least) in a reasonably damp affair that might have left seasoned quizzers a little hollow.

Our appetite has been whetted and we're ready for the quarter finals now. Still, the questions are always brilliant and the granny always gets a favourite.

We had a thumping victory, gigantic hair and many favourites for Granny and - whisper it quietly - some tetchy officiating.

Yes it was a bit of a mismatch but the core joy of UC was there for all to see

The hero of this week was at home watching. LSE sadly didn't have the chops today and Univ College showed reluctant pedigree

We discuss the drama as always and more on the lifestyle of a UC fan, what it means for your year.

Episode 2 of the 22/23 season. We had light hearted Paxman, knowing your speciality, captains in an extremely mature episode.
