For the first time ever, this podcast provides Uncensored Advice for you – the parents – the biggest unsung heroes of extreme sports!
In this podcast, you will find the support you’ve been searching for to RAISE EXTREME ATHLETES with confidence.
Today, let's dive into the often debated topic of homeschooling versus traditional schooling for young athletes. We'll explore the reality, challenges, and alternative education options that can support their athletic journey.
As we discovered firsthand, many successful pro athletes are homeschooled or engage in flexible remote learning due to the demanding travel and training commitments. However, homeschooling didn't align with our family dynamic. We sought alternative education paths that are offered by the progressive alternative schools. These schools provide flexibility, support, and a community that embraces the pursuit of athletic dreams. It's important to consider that alternative education comes with an extra cost, which can vary depending on the program and location.
I'm curious to hear how you navigate education in your household. Are you homeschooling, exploring online learning, or perhaps embracing unschooling or world schooling? Share your experiences and join the conversation. Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all solution, but together, we can empower and support our young athletes through their educational journey.

As parents, we invest in memberships, coaching, federation, and equipment, but often overlook the significance of a uniform. It's not just about appearance; it symbolizes commitment and belonging. When your child is the only one without a uniform in the team, it creates a sense of detachment and sends the wrong message. By embracing the uniform, your child becomes an integral part of a unit, fostering a sense of camaraderie and team spirit.

"Protecting our kids is our number one responsibility", Connie told me when we first connected. And she took this role incredibly seriously, in the non-conventional ways. Because protecting our kids in sports is rarely talked about and definitely not considered to be a priority. Because it usually is easily missed or we aren't alert to the signs.
Connie and I talk about her role as Kai's coach in the beginning, the roles of coaches (the good and the bad).
How about all the is involved to fully supporting your child for them to become the athlete that they are destined to be. Which is much more than just the financial side of things.
The golden nuggets discussed in this, never before interview, will truly help you take the right steps from Connie, who was a trailblazer in so many ways.
"I’m not the usual kind of ‘athlete’s mom’ that you’re accustomed to interviewing," Dierdre warned me when we first connected about being on the podcast.
And that's why I knew I had to speak to the mother of Alex Honnold, who is considered today's most accomplished rock climber and the real life star of Free Solo, Oscar winning documentary.
Raising a child like Alex Honnold takes courage and trust. This kind of support is usually taken for granted but can either stifle a child if 'overprotected' or let them blossom to become what is most natural to them.
Dierdre and I talk all about that kind of support and so much more.
However, Dierdre is an inspiration in her own right:
She speaks 8 languages fluently
Conducted an orchestra for 4 years
Plays 3 instruments
And is the oldest person to date to climb El Capitan in Yosemite National Park
A movie about her life is coming out:

About Your Host, Marina Kuperman Villatoro
Hi, I’m Marina Kuperman Villatoro, a mama on a mission to help my sons reach their goals and dreams in the extreme sport of rock climbing.
I, along with my extreme-athlete husband, am raising two rock climbers with ambitions to compete, become champions and eventually “go pro.” But, we only had the faintest idea of the level of commitment it would take on our part. We soon realized that the funding, compromise and decision making this endeavor requires falls as much – if not more – on our shoulders as theirs.
At the beginning it felt like the more we did the less we knew. So, like most of us today, I turned to the internet to figure things out.
I discovered that there’s plenty of ‘expert advice’ out there if your kid wants to play football, soccer, hockey, or baseball. But very little counsel is available for parents of extreme athletes.
Let’s face it, extreme sports are not the same as these types of team sports. They have been refined over decades through school sports programs, college level athletics, traveling teams and so much more.
Participating in extreme sports is a whole different way of life. It requires a whole different mindset, not to mention financial commitment, than traditional team sports. The safety issues and medical concerns alone will and do keep a parent up at night. These topics and many more will be addressed in the first few episodes.
The most important thing I can tell you from my experience is that as a parent you have so much control. You can squash your kid’s dream or make it real in a split second. The conversations you have with your kids can literally make or break their direction. The team you and your kids form at home will be the running theme of the podcast.
In researching successful, professional extreme athletes I always ask myself:
What did their families do differently?
What conversations did they have at home with their families?
What did the parents do that was helpful in supporting their kids so they didn’t quit?
How did they make the hard decisions that sometimes have to be made in extreme sports?
Now, in the podcast Raising Extreme Athletes: UNCENSORED, I get to the heart of it all, sharing my own experience and connecting with some of the behind-the-scenes heroes: the coaches, the trainers, the nutritionists, the therapists, and most importantly, you, the parents.
You are fully on board to support your kid especially because they want to go pro in their chosen sport, ie: surfing, mountain biking, rock climbing, motocross, snowboarding, etc…
That’s great, so are you ready to make the investment it takes for them to get to that next level for them to have the opportunity of going pro.
It’s one thing to say you support them, but it’s a whole other thing to commit and invest.
I’m NOT talking about money,
I AM talking about your time, your emotional support, your decision making
Interestingly enough, this is what is the most rewarding part of your child’s and your journey with them
Because the athletic journey is so much more than just becoming an athlete, it’s about confidence, it’s about discipline, skill, commitment
When you make the decision to ‘invest’ in your kid, you lead by example.
They watch us, the parents, to be their role models. Sure we’ll mess up once in a while - that’s normal and to be expected - but how we react and treat situations will sculpt their own way of doing things
In this episode, I talk about the investment we commit and the follow through.
Are you ready to take that step?

Is this going to be all glitz and glamor?
Is this going to be champagne popping podiums and huge screams of elation when winning?
ABSOLUTELY NOT
Is it going to be fun?
Is it going to be worth it?
More than anything you could ever, ever imagine.
The journey. What you all learn along the way. What you and your kid(s) will go through as far as the changes, even if your child never become the elite superstar, will be all that and so much more.
So if you’re going for the glitz and glamor, get out now before it’s not too late. Because you’re getting in it for the wrong reason.
But if you know all that is involved, it will be even better ...

What is envy when it comes to sports? And why it can either be a killer or the motivator for your child to get better.
Understanding where it comes from and handling it properly can help your kid rise above it and become so much better
Here’s an example of how envy can creep up on a kid and deflate them. They can feel envy towards another athlete because that kid started much earlier than they did.
Or, as it was in our case, my son gets injured more than most of his friends, and he gets frustrated and envious why they don’t go through what he does.
There are so many heads to the Envy snake, and all it comes down to is seeing it and properly managing the situation.
That’s what this episode will help you understand better.

Dealing with adversities is part of the athletic game.
Tears, frustrations, tantrums will be major players.
Resilience will be the reward.
Sports gives us so much, and when we ignore the difficult stuff, we rob our kids of dealing with adversities.
No matter the adversity it will always lead you back to the conversation in the house - How are you going to handle it?

Let’s get this straight from the very beginning - Your kid does not have to make up for your lack of success.
We don’t care what you did or didn’t achieve. This has nothing to do with your kid.
You living your life in a land of regrets will never be a good place to help support your child.
If you want your child to do well in their sport, then you need to do that from love and understanding. Not pushing your own agenda on them.
Find out how to let go of your own regrets and lack of success and be fully present for your child’s achievements and opportunities.

With climbing in the Olympics for the first time ever, my family became addicted to watching all the qualifying competitions leading up to the Olympics.
Since this sport is so familiar to us, and at times it felt like we were watching good friends during the competitions. So it was always a great treat to listen to the athletes that qualified tell their story, their journey of training and so much more.
Most of these athletes were in their 20’s and they were all pretty much saying the same thing:
They took one year off to go full-on training.
So when they take time off to train: In a climbing gym, with a coach, buying equipment, who’s paying for all this?
These athletes are not superstars, they are not sponsored, they stopped working so that they can devote their time to training.
Why is this an important topic to talk about?
Because of us parents this is the only reason most extreme athletes have a chance.
This isn’t to wield our power and control, but to remember how to properly support our children so that they do have a chance to take it as far as they possibly can!

Here’s something that will surprise you:
Your kids journey, your kids success, your kids failure in their sport has nothing to do with you!
It has nothing to do with your success.
It has nothing to do with your LACK of success.
It has nothing to do with your agenda.
It has nothing to do with who you are as a person.
When you see this for what it really is, then you can finally be there for your kid the right way.
In this episode we talk about how to get out of your own way.

TEARS - Are YOU ready for oceans of tears?
Because there will be lots and lots of tears.
There will be lots of frustrations.
There'll be lots of sadness,
And there'll be a lot of screaming.
It's just how it goes.
If you pretend that it's not normal and it's not right, then you're keeping back your emotions and the emotions of your kids .And that's wrong way to manage the situation,
Because this is a fact, this will happen.
But it’s all about how you handle the situations.
If you tell them to shut up, hold it in, not get sad, or mad or frustrated, you are literally telling them not to deal with what just happened. How can you ever grow if you are too busy telling them to bottle it up or that just deal with it and move on.
It’s ok to mess up.
It’s ok, to lose your cool.
What’s NOT OK is for you, the coaches, or whomever to retaliate, to be on the defense when kids get like this.
Remember it’s not at all about you!!!

Having talent is overrated.
Jeff Bezos has said many times, 'Talent can be turned into a curse if not used properly.'
So what exactly does that even mean?
Let’s just say, having talent will only take you so far.
But the kids that have grit, consistency, humbleness, discipline even if they aren’t as talented will eventually surpass the kids that have the 'TALENT' and want to ride that out without putting in the work.
It’s our responsibility to keep them grounded.
Definitely acknowledge the talent, but acknowledge the work ethic even more.
For example, when your kid wins, don’t say you are great, you are born with this, etc…
Instead focus on pointing out how their training you put in is really paying off. Tell them how their devotion to putting in the extra time to learn the move, look how well that worked out.
Point out the work that they are putting in and explain that this the the reason why they are getting better and better. And yes, you can definitely say, you have the talent, but the work ethic is what’s going to get you further.

What about the coaches, what are the words they are using?
You cannot even understand the impact of the words.
Power of words.
And the super power is rephrasing them when necessary.

Positioning is everything!
What does that even mean - positioning?
Where you are in the world matters to the sport your kid wants to grow in.
For example, we live in Central America, even though my kids have done snowboarding several times and were amazing at it. So much so that the instructors I hired to work with them the several weeks we were on the slopes, were doing all they can to figure out how they could join the team and continue.
But our reality was, we live in Guatemala, and at the end of each conversation, we all knew this was an impossibility unless we moved where there is snow.
So you can’t want your kid to be a surfer when you live 100 miles from the closest ocean.
You need to get real about your ‘positioning’.

What to expect when you listen
In this podcast, you will find the support you’ve been searching for to RAISE EXTREME ATHLETES with confidence.
As a parent of not one but two sons with ambitions to “go pro” in an extreme sport, your host Marina Kuperman Villatoro began navigating the often rocky terrain of extreme sports a decade ago. She learned quickly that while extreme athletes compete as individuals, raising an extreme athlete is most definitely a team sport.
In this one-of-a-kind podcast Marina pulls back the curtain and dives deep into chats with the (mostly) unsung heroes of extreme sports: the parents, the coaches, the trainers, the nutritionists and the therapists. These insightful conversations reveal the realities of what it takes to support a child to reach their potential as an extreme athlete.

What is orchestration and what does it have anything to do with your extreme sports and your kid?
Who in your family is the one that makes it all happen?
I’m not talking about the actual activity of the sport, but ALL the rest.
For example, who is arranging the meetings with new coaches? Driving to practices. Or confirming for the competition and the travel plans that need arranging.
This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Most of the time the person who is doing the orchestrating makes it look so natural that the kids feel like they are the ones that came up with everything.
This way no one even realizes that there was a whole thing going on in the background.
Someone in the house needs to be the orchestrator, because if not, then very little will move forward.
Who is doing the orchestration in the house?

Distraction big deal today right? It's a hot topic, yet the important stuff isn't talked about.
With all the social media apps, and electronics and everything else bombarding our kids and us every waking second of the day, we need to take a deeper look at what distraction is about.
But this episode isn’t about THOSE kinds of distractions
I’m talking about the difference between focused magic vs. distractedness when you are not doing what you love.
I’m going to dive into why kids get distracted yet when it comes to their sport they are so present and how this can be used for all parts of their lives and we all can learn from them.
Who are the decision makers when it comes to your kid's sport?
Let's make this very, very, very clear. Kids in extreme sports are not the decision makers.
They could be the motivators, the ones that come up with ideas. But they aren’t the ones that make the final decision.
Learn more in this episode what I’m talking about when I mean Decision Makers.
Death to Youtube - you’re probably saying - What?!?
WHY?!?
Here’s the thing, I have nothing against YouTube. On the contrary I think there are great AMAZING things to watch and learn on YouTube.
But here’s what my biggest concern is and I can see how this is affecting my kids and their abilities
When it comes to sports, especially Extreme Sports, what do you see on YouTube? The wins, the new tricks, the crazy extreme shit that we know is done.
In this episode I talk about why there aren’t any videos showing the trial and error, the hardships, the heart aches, the work that goes behind all the successes.
Because that's the truth.
My kids are watching YouTube and are constantly putting their favorite athletes on pedestals and almost feeling like they can never get to where they are.
But they forget, that it took years and many many hours and attempts to do what we are seeing in these videos.
I personally believe that the best YouTube channels that are going to be really helpful are the ones that show the crap that you have to go through. The heartache, the sadness, the work.
I get it’s important to be watching the athletes show what they do best, so you can see where you can see the outcome.
But let’s never forget the COME-UP.
Dealing with losses in sports is crucial to how your kid bounces back.
There's no possible way to go around this. This is one of the more devastating parts of it all, but it is an absolute necessity.
It strengthens your child.
It's what goes on in the house. The conversation is completely part of what is going to go on in the kid's heads and how they work through the process.
What about the injustices? What about the day that your son or daughter, have to qualify in competition and they get sick. Or they get injured and a totally lesser kid who has barely put any work gets to do that competition?
In this episode we talk about how to discuss these situations properly and how to make sense of it all, while still moving forward with confidence.
What is your kids true connection to the sport?
It’s not what you think. And this is what will keep your child committed vs. quitting prematurely.
Learning where the connection begins and planting the roots to keep the child truly inspired in their sport is going to surprise you.
Example: If the parent is the one to introduce the child to the sport, there is a higher chance the kid will continue because it’s a bond that the child can have with their parent.
However, if a parent or someone close to the child can’t find the time to bring them to practice, or the skate park or the rock or whatever their sport outlet is, chances are the interest will die out for the kid.
Find out the real truth and deep rootedness that will keep your child loving what they are doing and so much more …
Are you using the words sacrifice and compromise when you talk about supporting your kid and their sport?
In this episode, I talk about how those words can feel like a burden on your child and how it can backfire.
Changing your vernacular, the wording, will make all the difference.
There are very easy ways to make this tiny change that can be all the difference.
Changing the conversation about sending your kid to college vs. investing in their athletic training.
Once it is evident that your child not only has the goods, but passion, commitment and readiness maybe it's time to focus on those attributes.
And instead of saving for your kid's college education - why not save up for your kids training?
How about taking that money and putting it into their athletic abilities?
Here’s the thing - today it’s totally normal to get an education regardless of your age.
It’s totally normal to go through several careers changes.
But the hard core reality is that the best years an athlete can give is when they are young. So why not invest in that? Why not really nurture all that goes with their athletic abilities.
Besides, many university, if they see real potential in kid's abilities will give them scholarships anyway.
And if nothing else, the experience of the training, the work, the discipline they get - that alone will change everybody's lives for the better. Including the parents!
Let’s change the conversation around this!
The age old question: does my kid have what it takes to become a star?
Let’s not fool ourselves by pretending we don’t care about this, we all do. We want to know if our kid has what it takes.
What will it take to get them there?
In this episode we talk a lot about that, but one thing that really stuck out for me when my kids started climbing was:
Our first climbing coach once told me, that every kid who he trains, their parents come to him and ask, 'so is my kid a champion?'
And his response ALWAYS IS - talk to me in 5 years.
Did you know that there are 2 types of athletes?
Ready to find out the 2 types of athletes, because once you realize which category your kid falls into, your training will exponentially improve.
It will help you discover their weaknesses and strengths and that will make all the difference.
CLUE: The auto, self motivated kid versus the ones that need a coach.
Bonus - Coaching your own kid can be a tricky thing - learn the pros and cons of that.
What is accountability and why is it so important for your kids to know how to do it and someone to do it with.
What exactly is accountability? Once you know what it is, you can start applying it better.
Tips on how to give your kids a concrete wake up call from their delusional overachieving minds as in are they really doing all that they say they are doing?
Without accountability and tracking it’s hard to keep track of what is really going on.
How to track and be accountable simply, easily and in a fun way so they don’t think they are doing extra work.
