A stranger walks the Camino de Santiago for you, puts your name on a Compostela, and mails it to your door. What would that do to your life? Leigh sits down with her longtime friend Rocco Rossi, a Camino veteran with 23 Caminos behind him, to talk about the true tradition that shaped his debut novel Finding Grace: Vicari Pro Camino, walking on behalf of someone else as an act of blessing, memory, and love.
We dig into the real-life tragedy that sparked Rocco’s commitment to walking in another person’s name, and why the Camino can hold grief without erasing it. Rocco shares how community, ritual, and simple kindness can become a lifeline, especially for people carrying addiction, loss, or shame. We also talk about the “great leveler” effect of the Camino Frances, where a job title or bank account means nothing and what matters is the person you are over a shared meal or a few quiet kilometers.
Then we step into some of the most powerful Camino moments from the book and from lived experience: the humbling foot washing ritual at San Nicolas, the deep stillness that modern life steals from us, and why the Meseta can be where the real inner pilgrimage finally begins. If you’re planning a pilgrimage to Santiago, or looking for a Camino book that feels like real Camino life, you’ll come away with fresh motivation and a bigger view of what walking can be.

We sit down with full-time musician Felix Peralta to trace how a Camino Frances singer-songwriter retreat turns foggy mornings, cafe sing-alongs, and daily miles into a finished album. Along the way, we talk honestly about grief, sobriety, and the rare kind of friendship that forms when you put your heart on the table.
• Felix’s life as a touring musician and community drummer in New Mexico
• Meeting Christina Jacobson, getting sober, and choosing a new path
• Saying yes to a Camino de Santiago songwriting retreat and traveling to Spain
• Finding creative fuel in fog, hills, cafes, and simple daily rhythm
• Writing constantly on the move with voice notes, sticky notes, and small moments
• Celebrating 10+ years of sobriety as a personal gift and reset
• Cruz de Ferro as a place to release grief, lost loves, and old habits
• Feeling ancestral connection and making a promise to stop generational trauma
• Co-writing “Hearts on the Table” with Stefan Webster and why men need space to talk
• Bringing Camino magic home through art, performance, and continued healing
• Tips for returning home: keep making something that reopens the memory

A new talk show format! Join our conversation as we discuss various Camino topics to help in planning your first walk or to reminisce about your own pilgrim experiences. We open with on‑the‑ground news from Santiago: fierce winter storms, a rare snowfall, and a temporary closure at Santiago’s airport that will reroute some spring arrivals. We separate fact from rumor around a potential papal visit, and even share a peek at a Netflix production setting up a medieval market near the cathedral. Context matters—understanding timing, transport, and crowds helps you walk with more ease and fewer surprises.
From there, we dive into the questions every pilgrim wrestles with. Should you book ahead or keep your plans loose? Our panel compares stress levels, seasonal crowds, budget realities, and friendship dynamics, then offers a hybrid approach that preserves spontaneity while safeguarding rest. We also unpack the solo question with honest care: why walking alone can be empowering, how to set clear boundaries when a friend asks to join, and practical safety moves like checking in at cafes, choosing more populated routes, and carrying simple tools that boost confidence.
We also say the quiet part out loud: bio breaks and trail etiquette. Hydrate smart, use cafe bathrooms respectfully, carry out your toilet paper, and skip foot care at the table. You’ll learn the kit that prevents blisters—toe socks, midday sock changes, and walking your own pace—and the micro‑habits that keep you injury‑free when the crowd moves faster than your body wants. And because a Camino isn’t just kilometers, we celebrate small delights: a cold stream that resets swollen feet, a shady tree nap that restores patience, or a dawn birdwatch with Merlin that opens a new window into Spain’s landscape.
We close with ways to give back, from hospitalero training and albergue service to local food pantries and trail cleanups. Whether you’re mapping your first steps or returning for your sixth route, this conversation offers grounded advice, real‑world examples, and the gentle nudge to make choices that match your season of life. If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a pilgrim friend, and leave a quick review—what’s your top Camino tip for new walkers?

Endings deserve as much care as beginnings. We invited Faith and Nate, founders of Pilgrim House in Santiago de Compostela, to reflect on eleven years of offering a soft landing for pilgrims who have just completed the Camino—and on the bittersweet move back to the United States after nearly eighteen years in Spain. Their journey started with backpacks and a love for traveler culture; it matured into a vocation to practice simple, excellent hospitality where it matters most: the threshold between a long walk and the return home.
They share how a dream of opening an albergue evolved into creating a Pilgrim center instead when circumstances didn't go as they had originally imagined. Yet, that pivot proved to be better than their original idea as it unlocked a deeper and wider impact in the Camino community as a whole. Without beds to manage, Pilgrim House could stay open to everyone, not just those with reservations. That choice created time for real conversations, quiet rooms for reflection, a kitchen that hosted shared meals and impromptu lessons, and a staff of experienced pilgrims ready to help with both blisters and big questions. We discuss the early, scrappy days, grants that shaped the space, and the teammates whose fingerprints are everywhere.
We also look outward. Santiago’s season is longer, the pilgrim tide is higher, and the city has grown more global while holding onto its slow, walkable rhythm. For would‑be expats, Faith and Nate offer grounded advice: test a 90‑day stay before committing, learn the language with patience, build local friendships, and find a purpose that outlasts novelty. And for pilgrims nearing the finish, their counsel is clear—don’t rush. Linger in Santiago, use resources like Pilgrim House and Camino Companions, and let your ending become a thoughtful transition.
As Pilgrim House continues under the creative leadership of Gabe with Jessica and Emily, its DNA stays intact: warmth, presence, and the spirit of the Camino made tangible. If Santiago is on your horizon, stop by Pilgrim House and exhale. If this conversation resonates, subscribe, share it with a friend who loves the Camino, and leave a review to help others find the show.

Start the year with a pilgrimage you can do from your front door. We sit down with Leanne Pritchard to share how a small Tasmanian walk blossomed into a Global Camino that now brings together more than a thousand pilgrims across 40+ countries for two days of movement, meaning, and community. Whether you’re training for Spain, curious about your first Camino, or simply craving a gentle reset, this weekend gives you a simple way to reconnect with your body and your Camino family—no airfare required.
Leanne explains how the event began during lockdown and why it endures: flexibility, inclusion, and the shared joy of posting a photo that says, “I walked.” We talk through practical details—mirroring Tasmania’s 15 km and 18 km routes if you want, or choosing any distance that fits your weather, health, and time. You’ll hear stories that capture the spirit, from brave northern walkers crunching through snow to the Memphis crew bringing humor with Elvis costumes, plus smart safety choices when storms hit. We also preview the weekend’s livestreams: an opening ritual, a closing at St. James Church in Cygnet with a Botafumeiro, an interview with two Texas pilgrims flying in, and a live cross to Spain.
We dedicate this show in memory of Judy Colaneri and Ella Neal, honoring their courage, kindness, and love for the Camino. If you’ve felt the yellow arrow tug at your heart, use this weekend to set intentions, test your gear, and reconnect with friends you met on the trail. RSVP on Facebook, share where you’ll walk, post a photo when you finish, and encourage others in the comments. Subscribe, share this episode with a friend who needs a nudge to lace up, and leave a review to help more pilgrims find the path. Ready to walk with us next weekend?

What if a walk changed the entire trajectory of your life? For Judy of Spanish Steps, a spontaneous decision to walk the Camino de Santiago in 1994 sparked a journey that would transform everything.

When Judy first set foot on the Camino, she walked alone through dusty wheat fields, not encountering a single pilgrim for days. The pilgrim experience was vastly different then—no smartphones, no apps, just a guidebook and the occasional payphone for making expensive international calls. At an albergue in Puente la Reina, everything changed when she met a group of international pilgrims—including a handsome Spanish man named Juan Carlos who would later become her husband.
This captivating conversation reveals how their Camino romance blossomed into a 30-year partnership that includes running Spanish Steps, a company that has guided countless groups across various Camino routes. Judy shares the remarkable story of how she asked Santiago for a sign about whether to start guiding pilgrims, only to have her press release published in the LA Times a month later—launching her unexpected career.
Beyond the business side, Judy offers intimate insights into the challenges and rewards of expat life in rural Spain. Having renovated an old farmhouse in Asturias into a boutique hotel, she speaks candidly about language barriers, integration challenges, and why maintaining connections to your home country might be the wisest approach for Camino-inspired dreamers.
Whether you're contemplating your first Camino or fantasizing about opening an albergue someday, Judy's three decades of wisdom provide both inspiration and practical guidance. Her story reminds us that sometimes the most meaningful journeys don't end in Santiago—they're just beginning there.

The rain beats down on Santiago de Compostela's ancient stones as Johnny Walker connects from the Parador's Royal Dining Room, overlooking sodden pilgrims braving hailstones and downpours during the spiritually significant Holy Week. Despite the weather, pilgrimage numbers continue to swell as travelers arrive hoping to experience Easter in this sacred city.
Fresh from a whirlwind North American tour promoting "The Way, My Way," Johnny shares heartwarming stories of packed theaters and pilgrim connections across major cities. What began as film screenings transformed into impromptu pilgrim gatherings, complete with blessing ceremonies using scallop shells from Santiago's cathedral. Most moving was a 16-year-old viewer who, inspired by the film, publicly committed to walking the Camino—receiving her own blessed shell amidst thunderous cries of "Buen Camino" from fellow audience members.
Santiago's Holy Week traditions take center stage in our conversation, from Palm Sunday's blessed branches to Easter Sunday celebrations, with thirteen traditional processions threading through the city's narrow streets. Johnny provides fascinating historical context about the distinctive medieval penitent costumes worn during these processions, clearing up common misconceptions about their origins. We also discuss the Pilgrim Office's revised Compostela requirements, which now recognize journeys of at least 70 kilometers within Spain, and hear from veteran pilgrim Rocco Rossi, who perfectly articulates why so many of us return to the Camino time and again: "If you find something in your life that brings you joy, clarity, and energy, the real question is why aren't you doing it more than once?" Whether you're planning your first Camino or your twenty-first, this perspective reminds us of the path's enduring power to transform lives with each journey.

The Camino Cafe podcast makes an exciting return as host Leigh Brennan welcomes listeners back from a hiatus caused by her move to the United States. Though she misses the immediacy of Santiago and stepping directly onto Camino paths, Leigh shares her renewed commitment to promoting pilgrim journeys as pathways toward healing.
Joining the conversation is veteran pilgrim Rocco Rossi, speaking directly from Santiago de Compostela after completing what he considers his 21st Camino since 2002. Rocco offers fascinating real-time insights about current conditions on various routes, noting dramatic differences in pilgrim traffic. While he walked the Camino Madrid completely alone, Santiago now welcomes over 2,000 pilgrims daily during Holy Week, with the vast majority arriving via the Frances or Portuguese routes.
Rocco's wisdom shines through as he explains why he keeps returning to the Camino: "If you find something in your life that brings you joy, clarity, and energy, the real question is why aren't you doing it more than once?" He likens the Camino to an oxygen mask that centers and revitalizes him annually, enabling him to better navigate life's challenges. Despite walking solo at times, Rocco emphasizes that the heart of every Camino lies in the connections formed with locals and fellow pilgrims who enrich the journey immeasurably.
The episode concludes with an exciting announcement about Leigh and Rocco potentially co-leading a group Camino in 2026, inviting listeners to share input about their ideal pilgrim experience. Whether you're planning your first Camino or your tenth, this episode rekindles the special magic that draws us to these ancient paths time and again. Join us at the Camino Cafe as the talented LA-based singer-songwriter Harold Payne takes us on his transformative journey along the Camino Portuguese. Harold opens up about the deeply personal motivations behind his walk, from his academic background in Spanish to the profound need for healing following his wife's passing. Along the way, he shares the exhilaration of completing the journey and the empowering sense of accomplishment it brings, interwoven with stories from his impressive music career, including collaborations with legends like Bobby Womack, Rod Stewart, and Snoop Dogg.
Ever gotten a black eye from a guidebook? Harold has, and he's here to tell the tale. We explore the balance between the physical challenges of the Camino, like heel pain and blisters, and the mystical, meaningful encounters that can happen on such a journey. Drawing parallels to his experience on an international peace walk in India, Harold reminisces about the spontaneous connections made along the way. To top it off, he treats us to a heartfelt performance of his original song "One Step," which captures the essence of taking small, meaningful actions.
Finally, we reflect on the lasting impact of the Camino de Santiago on Harold's life. Harold chats about his own love for travel and adventure, sharing insights on the importance of spontaneity and the value of accommodations that balance comfort and proximity to the action. With memorable advice for future travelers and an impromptu song aptly titled "The Camino Saved Me," Harold's reflections offer a heartfelt guide for anyone looking to embark on their own Camino journey.

Ever wondered how a simple walk could transform your life? This episode of Camino Cafe features the incredible journey of Celeste Mancinelli, a retired speech and language pathologist whose trek on the Camino Portuguese led her to create the captivating one-woman show, Crying on the Camino. Celeste takes us through her motivations for embarking on the journey at this stage of her life, the surprising trials she faced with her trekking companions, Dr. Lynn and Lauri, and the deep connections that formed along the way. Through her candid reflections and humor, you'll gain a newfound appreciation for the self-discoveries that the Camino pilgrimage can bring.
Discover the unexpected path that turned Celeste’s Camino experience into a successful theatrical performance. Initially capturing her trek through personal recordings and Facebook updates, the isolation of the pandemic and encouragement from friends led her to develop and perform her material in intimate settings. From living room gatherings to sold-out theaters, Celeste’s minimalist act, featuring only her and her Camino gear, has captivated audiences worldwide. Her self-deprecating humor and raw storytelling have brought the universal appeal of her pilgrimage to stages in Madrid, Santiago, and Portland, just to name a few, making the story resonate with people across the globe.
This episode also touches on the deep connections Celeste has formed with her audience and the children she once cared for. Hear about the emotional reunions and the gratitude expressed by those whose lives she has touched, whether through her career or her performances. Celeste’s honesty about aging, personal reflection, and the physical and spiritual challenges of the Camino resonate deeply with audience members, pilgrims, and non-pilgrims. Tune in for an episode filled with inspiration, laughter, and the joy of shared experiences.

Embark on a melodic sojourn with the illustrious Dr. Kristina Jacobsen, as she leads us down the lyrical path of self-discovery that intertwines with the historic trails of the Camino de Santiago. Our guest, an accomplished singer, songwriter, and associate professor at the University of New Mexico, unveils the harmony between creativity and walking, revealing how her initial reluctance transformed into a profound pilgrimage of the soul. Your ears will be graced with snippets of Kristina's Camino-inspired tunes, offering a taste of the magic that occurs when music and mile markers merge.
From the academic halls of Massachusetts to the heartstrings of the Southwest, Kristina shares her story with us, touching on her collaborations with the Navajo Nation and the evolution of her songwriting workshops. The journey that brought her to create the singer and songwriter retreat on the Camino will inspire the artist within. As we traverse this episode, you'll discover the alchemy that transpires when the pace slows to three miles an hour, and each step, each note, becomes an anthem of personal growth.
In the closing chords of our session, Kristina invites creatives of all stripes to join her in an upcoming Camino retreat—a sanctuary designed for reconnecting with one's artistry. With only ten spots available, this intimate retreat beckons musicians, writers, poets, and anyone yearning to stir their creativity amongst the camaraderie of fellow pilgrims. Allow your spirit to be moved by the tales of community, collaboration, and the euphonious echoes of new songs birthed along the Camino's sacred route.

Embark on a captivating odyssey with Andy Holloway and Simon Burn, the pioneering filmmakers of "Somewhere Along the Way," as we uncover the heartfelt narrative of Dan Mullins' musical resurgence on the Camino de Santiago. The Camino's ancient paths have long been a source of transformation, and in this episode, our guests share the profound impact these journeys had on them, from Andy's extensive explorations to Simon's life-altering walk. They reveal the stirring inception of their documentary—a harmonious blend of melodies, the pilgrim spirit, and Spain's cultural gems—and how they aim to immortalize Dan's story, a singer-songwriter breathing new life into his voice amidst the Camino's sacred backdrop and the group of Pilgrims walking with him from Leon to Santiago this coming May.
Venture behind the scenes as we discuss the grit and grace of filming a pilgrimage, a labor of love met with both financial hurdles and physical demands. Our conversation shifts to the labyrinth of logistics from the weighty camera gear to the nightly shoots after a day's trek. Andy and Simon open up about their dedication to authentically capturing the Camino's essence, all while juggling their roles as observers and participants in this vibrant pilgrim community. They extend a heartfelt invitation for support, engaging our listeners with tales of their upcoming gatherings and the camaraderie that is the cornerstone of the Camino de Santiago experience.

When life handed Dan Mullins a silence he'd never asked for, it wasn't the silence of peace but of challenge—a virus had stolen his singing voice, casting a shadow over his musical career. But from the depths of that quiet time, a story of resilience and reinvention emerged, which Dan shares openly in our latest episode. It's a testament to the power of the human spirit, chronicling his journey from the devastating diagnosis following the aftermath of a virus to the discovery of a richer, more captivating sound that's now the hallmark of his music.
Struck by the profundity of silent moments, Dan speaks candidly about the unexpected gifts that came with his vocal rest. Imagine this: a wellspring of creativity bursting forth as he unearths a treasure trove of old melodies and crafts new songs, each a testament to his undying passion for music. Listeners will travel with Dan on his path of recovery, learning how meticulous vocal exercises and a supportive family and medical network paved the way for a new album inspired by life's intricate tapestry. His narrative is not just for musicians but for anyone who finds themselves at the crossroads between loss and the sheer determination to create something beautiful from it.
Finally, we meander through Dan's creative plans, and next Camino walk, to the intimate stories behind his podcast and record ventures. His innovative approach to crowdfunding a new album intertwines the artist-fan relationship in a shared pilgrimage, redefining the journey of music production. To cap it off, we're treated to the world premiere of a touching composition born from a tale of enduring love and sudden loss—a couple's lifetime together ending in a poignant harmony that echoes through Dan's music. Join us for an episode that celebrates the human capacity to find hope, creativity, and connection in the wake of life's unexpected silences.

Kelli Field is back at The Camino Cafe Podcast and we had so much to catch up on as we walked through the charming old town of Santiago de Compostela. This discussion is a soulful exchange about living on the Camino Francés, her new novel, “The Grief of Goodbye” which is set on the Camino, and life lessons she has learned from both walking and meeting with pilgrims daily.
We'll chat about the transformative power of the Camino, as told through the eyes of Kelli's protagonist Tess, a cancer patient who puts her treatment on hold to walk the revered path with her daughter. Kelli’s storytelling seamlessly weaves universal themes, the rich tapestry of Spain, and stories that may resonate from our own life or from pilgrims we met along the Camino.
Kelli and Jeff’s life on the Camino de Santiago provides an extraordinary perspective, living at marker 59, they witness a procession of pilgrims on their transformative journey. Each day, up to 3000 pilgrims pass by their home, each carrying their own stories of resilience and transformation. Kelli and Jeff are channeling the Camino's positivity into their plans for the 2024 season, creating a haven for pilgrims, complete with a stationary food truck and cabins.
Here’s the link to the first interview we did with Kelli and Jeff a few years ago:

Finally, Kelli shares her personal experience with the Camino's challenges and how it taught her the beauty of surrender and the power of patience. The fear of the unknown is a common sentiment among pilgrims preparing for the Camino, but as Kelly reveals, the real lessons and feedback often come after the journey. We round off the episode in the square in front of the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, swapping stories and reflecting on the profound impact of Kelly's book and the Camino itself. So, join us in this soulful exchange about life, love, and lessons from the Camino de Santiago.

Have you ever yearned for a journey that goes beyond physical travel, delving instead into the realm of self-discovery and existential exploration? In this short message, John Brierley, paints a vivid picture of such a journey – the Camino and its transformative potential. Known for the profound impact it's had on countless individuals, the Camino serves as a unique space to step back from the noise of everyday life, encouraging us to pose existential questions that often get overshadowed by our daily routines. John highlights the power of self inquiry, and how the very act of questioning our identity can have a cathartic effect.
As the conversation with John unfolds, we touch upon the fears and challenges that come with embarking on this path of self-discovery. We discuss the courage it takes to question our identities and beliefs, and the beauty of embracing a state of being 'lost.' This transformative journey is not without its hardships, but it is within the supportive environment of the Camino community that we find the strength to let go of our prejudices and preferences. We conclude with a thought-provoking quote from the third patriarch of Zen emphasizing the importance of freeing ourselves from our biases. Join us for this enlightening discussion with John Brieley about seeking and finding our true selves through the Camino journey.

Join me and Rebekah Scott as we play 20 Camino Questions. Rebekah is an American journalist who has been living in Spain for the last 17 years. She's the author of several books including, "A Furnace Full of God" a memoir about her life in Spain and living on the Camino Frances route. This book is a featured selection of the Santiago de Compostela Book Club. Her contributions to the path and the Camino community have been numerous. During this interview, we chatted briefly about her books and her foundation, Peaceable Projects.
Imagine living on the silent stretch of the meseta section on the Camino, where the hustle of everyday life fades into the background. Rebekah enriches our understanding of this solitude, revealing how walking through it throws into sharp relief those truths that are often obscured by life's chaos. She dives into her love for solitary walks but also highlights the unique bond shared with fellow pilgrims on the trail. We discuss her recent visit to Machu Picchu, exploring her experience on the mystical Inca trail and how it contrasts with the Camino.
She shares her thoughts on preserving the heritage of the Camino while navigating its evolution—how do we protect the path for everyone, regardless of their economic status, and honor its spirit of inclusivity? Lastly, we revel in her insights on the Camino’s magical power to bond people, encourage resilience, and inspire a purpose-driven life.

So come along as we venture on this all-important journey of self-discovery. Remember, the journey is a continuous one, extending way beyond the Camino.

In an enlightening exchange, Carrie presents invaluable tips for anyone considering walking the Camino for the first time. She discusses the subtle differences between walking solo or with a friend and how these choices can impact decisions like lodging. It was in John’s last wishes that Leigh Brennan and Patti Silva document the most important pieces of wisdom he gained from walking the Camino paths for over a quarter of a century. This project grew into this docuseries of several short but poignant video messages for Pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago.
This is the first chapter of the multipart series. John stated the driving thought behind the title of this chapter by saying, “The Camino as a Path of Awakening: This is, perhaps, the easiest to grasp because it pre-supposes we are asleep. Every mystical tradition has Awakening as a core theme of spiritual development and no more so than in Christianity. The Bible tells us that, ‘A great sleep came across Adam’, and nowhere in the bible is there any reference to Adam waking up! We, collectively, are Adam and we remain asleep but now urgently need to awaken to a new consciousness. The Camino can offer us a path into transformation”.
About John Brierley:
John Brierley spent his early life in Dublin where he qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and set up practice as Brierley & Co in 1971 later merging with Jackson-Stops. An existential crisis took him and his family to Findhorn in Scotland in 1987 as part of a mid-career break. This was to prove a pivotal time in his life with a reordering of priorities towards a spiritual perspective.
In 1996 he convened the international conference ‘Business for Life’ where the core issue was identified as the crisis of the human spirit and the search for meaning in life. The idea of Business sabbaticals as an antidote to burn out and pilgrimage as a way to reappraise life's purpose became his abiding passion. In 2000 he walked up through Western Nepal into Tibet to complete the renowned Mount Kailash pilgrimage sacred to Buddhism, Hinduism and esotoric Christianity.

WAKE UP CALL
10 years of quiet desperation led to a turning point, that opportunity that comes to each of us at some pivotal stage in our life and offers us a time to re-assess our direction. The classic existential mid-life crisis that can lead to breakdown and breakthrough. For me it started in January 1986 with an alarmingly persistent wake-up call. Looking back I laugh at the idea of my spiritual guides working overtime to wake me up. The dream needed very little interpretation but I was so blind that I still could not read its message. I had this dream, off and on, for a whole year before its significance began to dawn on me. I really thought I was going mad during that period and of course, in conventional terms, I was. The turning upside down of consensus reality is frequently misunderstood as some psychotic episode whereas, within the bigger picture, it is simply spiritual emergence and the opening to knowledge of higher worlds. I slowly became aware of a spiritual reality behind the sense-perceptible world.
SABBATICAL
At the end of that year I realised that something profound was trying to happen and it gave me enough courage to claim a mid-career break. I was 39 and Ireland was in recession so my business partners needed little persuading, my wife and children needed none. She had spent her earlier years in an Ashram and couldn't wait to break away from the mindless social and business circles. The children had suffered a few years of the state curriculum and where likewise ready to experience something more liberating. So a gap suddenly appeared with this amazing potential for change and growth - I was off the treadmill for a year!
THE JOURNEY OF AWAKENING
We headed away in a camper van to ‘travel the world’ and during that year, 1987, I stumbled onto the Camino de Santiago for the first time and felt its welcoming embrace. The Findhorn Foundation in Scotland was the next stop along the Way and it was there I realised that i

This interview was filmed on location outdoors in Santiago. Please excuse the background noise!
Imagine achieving the unthinkable. Refusing to let a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy stop you. This is Gabriel’s Camino. A 4-year quest to achieve a dream even when the odds were against him. He, along with his trusted and dedicated teacher, Kym, set out to accomplish what few would even try. Together, they assembled an international team of pilgrims who put aside their own goals to help Gabriel reach his. As a team, they overcame numerous obstacles to complete the ancient 500-mile pilgrim path from St. Jean Pied de Port, France to Santiago de Compostela, Spain via the Camino Francés. Few thought they could do it. Yet, with faith, courage, and determination, Gabriel and his team proved that we are all capable of being unstoppable. There wasn’t a dry eye in the cathedral plaza when they arrived. Filmed in Santiago, just hours after their arrival, you’ll hear team leaders, two key team members, and finally, Gabriel share their emotional reactions to completing their 4-year quest. Prepare to be inspired, to cry, and to cheer for this hero and his team. It will mean so much to Gabriel if you comment on this interview with congratulatory comments and give this interview a "thumbs up"! Please share the link to this interview with your friends as I think we all could use a little inspiration right now!
BONUS - Meet Gabriel and Kym in person at our live online event! We will celebrate and then catch up with them to see how this journey has impacted them months after. The live event is at 4:00 pm EST tomorrow (Saturday, April 29th, 2023).

Meet Steve and Carol Lytch! They have a passion for the Camino and for volunteering. Steve is Chairman of the Board of the American Pilgrims on the Camino and the two of them have walked numerous Caminos over the last several years. They enjoy giving back to the Camino Community by volunteering in numerous ways including serving pilgrims at the Albergue Peregrinos Ribadiso. In this interview, we chat about how the Camino provides us an opportunity to open to the giving and the receiving of grace, the generosity one experiences on the Camino, and the Beatitudes of the Pilgrim. This was a deep conversation about spirituality, the power of pilgrimage, and the Camino as a metaphor for life.

The Beatitudes of the Pilgrim
Blessed are you pilgrim, if you discover that the Camino opens your eyes to what is not seen.
Blessed are you pilgrim, if what concerns you most is not to arrive, but to arrive with others.
Blessed are you pilgrim, when you contemplate the Camino and you discover it is full of names and dawns.
Blessed are you pilgrim, because you have discovered that the authentic Camino begins when it is completed.
Blessed are you pilgrim, if your knapsack is emptying of things and your heart does not know where to hang up so many feelings and emotions.
Blessed are you pilgrim, if you discover that one step back to help another is more valuable than a hundred forward without seeing who or what is by your side.
Blessed are you pilgrim, when you don’t have words to give thanks for everything that surprises you at every twist and turn along the way.
Blessed are you pilgrim, if you search for the truth and make of the Camino a life of your life,
Blessed are you pilgrim, if on the way you meet yourself and gift yourself with time, without rushing, so as not to disregard the image in your heart.
Blessed are you pilgrim, if you discover that the Camino holds a lot of silence; and the silence of prayer, and the prayer of meeting with God who is waiting for you

After this interview, all I can think about it walking a Camino in Croatia! I think you'll see why after you meet Vedran Prazen, an eight-time Camino veteran, and Pia Veronika Klinac, a 15-year-old first-time Pilgrim in this interview. recorded in Santiago. Vedran is one of the key people involved in revitalizing the Croatian Camino paths. His personal story is so inspiring from overcoming major health challenges to falling in love on the Camino! His insights on how the Camino is like "getting to peek into the keyhole of paradise" and how the walk feels like an "internal shower" are beautiful descriptions of what it's like to walk a Camino. History buffs will also love hearing about the findings of Pilgrim traditions in Croatian dating back to 1203 AD! Pia shares some delightful insights on what it was like to walk as a 15-year-old, with her Mom, and with the Croatian group. I found her to be wise beyond her years and it was such a joy to spend time with her. I hope you enjoy meeting Vedran and Pia as much as I did!

In this episode, I welcome Camino Pilgrim and Guide, Nancy Reynolds, to the podcast! Nancy recently started a terrific new Camino Podcast, "You on the Camino de Santiago". Her podcast is dedicated to helping give first-time walkers tips and advice for walking a Camino. In addition to discussing her podcast, we also chat about how her pilgrimages helped her to see the best version of herself, how the Camino helped her grow into a deeper sense of self "like", how she began to recognize the gifts she had to offer others, and the power of bearing witness while walking with fellow pilgrims. My Lucky Shirt
For Phil - by -Catherine Johnson
If you were my lucky shirt, and
some days I think you are,
sitting on the tailgate
sharing coffee and doughnuts,
talking sports, faith, this year’s corn
If you were my lucky shirt
I would wear you every day,
until I mended you
so many times
you were nothing but the thinnest of threads.
Then I would wind your threads
onto a wooden spool
painstakingly shaped and sanded,
I’d sit down and sew you once again
into a new shirt
even luckier than the first.

Today’s guest is “Unstoppable, Stacey”, a pilgrim and author from Flagstaff, Arizona. I’ve been thinking a lot about her story since I recorded our interview. She has not let a near-fatal accident that resulted in a brain injury stop her from doing the thing she loves to do most which is to travel. She’s walked several Caminos and has written Camino guidebooks. Let’s listen to Stacey tell her story, share her insights about walking, and tells us about a Pilgrimage in the US called the Wisconsin Way. Stacey inspires me and I think she will inspire many of you! Be sure to check out the Bonus episode with Stacey where we played 20 Camino Questions and the behind-the-scenes footage of this interview which are both available on our YouTube Channel.

Our guest today, Mike Gardner, shares his inspirational story, the unexpected ways his faith was restored from walking, and the magic he began to see again both in the world and in people. Mike is originally from the UK and now lives in Spain. He’s an accomplished sports journalist and author. His book about the Camino is called Miracles on the Camino
During the interview, we discuss the inspiring true stories he collected as he walked and later published as a book. I was mesmerized by both Mike and his stories. Now, let’s hear Mike share his story and the stories of some of the folks he met along the way…after the interview, I invite you to our YouTube Channel to see Mike in the behind-the-scenes footage of this interview and also in the video where we play 20 Camino questions.

Tara Marlow - Camino Wandering, available on Amazon.
From Leigh - Through walking a Camino we see firsthand that we can trust in abundance vs scarcity….that there’s enough for all of us. There’s no shortage of Camino Magic or Camino Angles for we Pilgrims. There will be a place to sleep, a cafe for a warm cafe con Leche, the strength found to finish a tough climb, courage rising up to help you go on when your body just wants to quit, just a kilometer or so down the road something will help you keep going.
There are no limits on how a Camino can help you transform or heal nor any limit on the number of Pilgrims that can receive some healing or be transformed through a Camino. We don’t know exactly how or when it will transform us, maybe during our walk, or maybe it takes a second walk, or it happens after you get home and process it all but we can have faith that with an open heart the Camino will provide.
During our Camino we may very well be the magic or the one providing…maybe just the sharing of your story helps another pilgrim feel less alone in the world as you bond over a common life hardship, maybe we go on to start a non-profit like Rocco, Sister Katherine….or maybe we go home with the strength to deal with a difficult situation that must be sorted out, or maybe we will write a book about our Camino that will inspire others like our guest today, Tara Marlow, did.
Either way know….If you walk….all is possible. Not just for some pilgrims, but for all pilgrims and for you too! Tara “s story will show you just that. She's originally from Sydney, Australia but spent 20 years working in the US until she became a full-time traveler and travel writer. She is currently based in Tasmania. I am so inspired by her life journey and how the Camino played into where she is today in life. She had a dream to walk the Camino solo after leaving an amazing but extremely stressful career. That walk led to a second Camino and then to the publishing of a fictional Camino book that focuses on characters many of us can relate to. Tara’s story, her energy, and her wisdom really resonated with me. I think it may resonate with you as well. Please join me at The Camino Cafe table as we hear Tara share her story in her own words. After you listen to this episode check out behind-the-scenes footage on YouTube of this interview plus the bonus video content where we played 20 Camino Questions available here on our podcast and on our YouTube channel.

Welcome to Season 3(0:00 -5:49)
I’ve been working hard to bring you some great pilgrim stories from Pilgrims all around the world for season 3.
I do this podcast because I believe we learn best through telling our stories and hearing each other’s stories. It is through this story sharing that I hope to inspire listeners and viewers to walk their first Camino or maybe a 6th or 7th Camino. When I record an episode, I treat it like it’s just the Pilgrim and I out walking on the Camino. I don’t send out questions ahead. Everything is organic conversation just like it is when we walk the Camino.
One of the greatest gifts we can receive while we walking is for another pilgrim to hold space for us to share our story and then in turn for us to hold space so a pilgrim can share their story with us. I am so grateful to you for listening to the stories shared here on the podcast as you are holding space for everyone that is interviewed as they share their stories here. I hope along the way of each episode you learn some new and helpful things, that you are entertained at times but more than anything I hope if you haven’t yet walked that this inspires you to walk and if you’ve already walked, I hope it brings back memories of your own Camino and keeps your Camino Spirit burning bright and strong until you walk again.
Sister Katherine O'Flynn: (5:50-57:00)
How many of us choose to walk when we are at a crossroads in life? Maybe we walk to find ourselves again after we experience loss or we have a major change in our life or a decision that needs to be made. Today’s premier episode with Sister Katherine O’Flynn is a perfect example of this and also the power of how the Camino can transform your life and possibly lead you on a new journey where you can be of service in the world.
That very thing happened for Sister Katherine as the idea of Camino Companions formed from her Camino as she walked to ponder the next chapter in life. Camino Companions is an amazing resource here in Santiago de Compostela for all English-speaking Pilgrims. Their space is in the Pilgrim Office where you get your Compostela. To visit with them, you just need to let the guard at the front door of the Pilgrim Office know you are there to see them or attend the Pilgrim Mass in the Pilgrim Office Chapel. They are located on the 2nd floor in Office 6. They are from around Easter through the end of October. Pilgrim Mass is offered year-round unless Father Manny is out of town.
They offer many services which we discussed during the interview including tea following the Pilgrim Mass in English with Father Manny. Mass and the services offered by Camino Companions are provided every day except on Wednesdays. Mass is at 10:30 am and tea is served upstairs right after. Camino Reflection circles are held at 3 pm in the Camino Companion space. If you enjoy this conversation, I hope you will share it with anyone you know who is planning on walking a Camino. It would be wonderful to help other English-speaking pilgrims be aware of these supportive services available right here in Santiago after completing their Caminos.

María Seco, from Spanish for The Camino, is back at The Camino Cafe! I love how her life journey has come full circle. She grew up near The Camino, went to University in Santiago de Compostela, walked her first Camino after teaching for several years, and then became an entrepreneur and author. Her business, Spanish for the Camino, helps enhance a Pilgrim's Spanish-speaking skills towards enriching the overall Camino experience both culturally and functionally. She just published her first book titled, Mi primer Camino de Santiago. The book provides a wonderful way to learn more Spanish words and phrases that are used during an actual Camino and to learn about the Camino Ingles route. I really enjoyed the book and more importantly, it helped me prepare for my next walk!

Eirené is a NY-based Pilgrim that walked the Camino Portuguese in the Spring of 2022. This conversation goes deep into spirituality and how expressive art may very well help you enhance the processing of your Camino experience. Eirené is no stranger to Pilgrimage as she walked to Jerusalem years prior to her Camino. Eirené's story shows the power of how a Pilgrimage can help us when we feel we are at one of life's crossroads. I loved talking with Eirené as she keeps things real and her creative artistic traits bring her stories to life. Check out her upcoming workshop below! I hope to be there.

What a fun conversation I had with Pilgrim, Canadian, and Author, Brad Thomas Batten. I loved learning about how the Camino has changed since his first Camino in the late 80’s. It made me wonder if I would have been tough enough to walk without all of the current things we have like our iPhones! I was also quite taken with Brad’s journey from loss to healing after walking his first Camino. We chat about how the Camino helped him process his grief and find contentment and peace. Stories, like Brad’s, reinvigorate my faith and remind me of the healing potential Pilgrimage can give to each and every one of us. Brad's new novel, Pilgrim, is coming out this Fall! Efrén González needs no introduction to anyone probably listening to this episode. Efren is one of the most well-known and loved Camino ambassadors out there! He’s been filming Camino routes for years happily educating and entertaining us all the while. I caught up with him in Santiago as he was beginning his 3D filming project for The Camino Frances. I found him to be just as gracious and humble as he is in his videos. My goal going into the interview was to learn more about Efren as a Pilgrim and what it’s like behind the scenes when he films. I think the interview captured this and so much more. I hope you enjoy getting him and hearing us as we recorded around this magical city of Santiago de Compostela. Thanks to Sharon Brothers and Timothy Ringering for helping and participating in this special interview for The Camino Cafe. I am so grateful to Efren for so kindly accepting my interview request, letting us hang out with him as he filmed, and for helping me put together the audio tracks for this interview. Thanks to you our listeners for your interest in the work we are doing here at The Camino Cafe. I hope you enjoy what we put together with Efrén for you! Shoshana stopped by the Camino Cafe to discuss her new book, Cancer, Kintsugi, Camino: A Memoir. I had the chance to read several chapters before our interview and I am hooked. I really enjoyed her writing style and her take on how can use the concept of Kintsugi to help us reframe the places we feel broken. We discuss the artistic book cover which she designed and her writing process in great detail. We also chatted about how her vocations and cancer treatment influenced her Camino experience. What a thrill it was to have peregrina, writer and cultural anthropologist, Beebe Bahrami, back at The Camino Cafe to discuss her newest Camino book, The Way of the Wild Goose: Three Pilgrimages Following Geese, Stars, and Hunches on the Camino de Santiago in France and Spain. During this interview, we discuss her upcoming retreat at Flores del Camino, the three pilgrimages she took for research on her newest book, intentional travel, Mary and the sacred feminine on The Camino Frances, the energy of The Camino, and of course, the wild goose. I absolutely love Beebe’s new book. It made me want to walk The Camino Frances again only more slowly this time!

Steve Lynch - Board Chairman
Joe Curro Chapters - Committee Chair
Tom Labuzienski - Membership Committee Chair
Ruben Mendoza - Grants Committee Chair
We had a lovely conversation about the Camino, the mission of the organization, highlights from the recent Annual Pilgrim Gathering, the upcoming Hospitalero training, how we can support The Camino by becoming members of the organization, and recent grants awarded to just name a few items. It was a pleasure to sit down with the board members and see how they are personally giving back and how the organization is giving back to The Camino. This episode is dedicated to the hope of a cure being found for Diabetes 1. Bob has dedicated his life to showing how he has not just lived with Diabetes but has learned to thrive with it. As the Diabetes Crusader, he has walked thousands and thousands of miles to bring awareness to Diabetes 1 and 2. He lives his life in a way to demonstrate how one can manage diabetes and still do the things one loves. In this interview, you will hear how he has logged all of his mileage while successfully managing Diabetes 1 on the Camino. I never realized the extra work involved and the additional weight one must carry while managing diabetes and walking long distances. I hope the information he provides in this interview inspires others with Diabetes to walk the Camino if it is a dream of theirs. It was a joy meeting Bob in person and filming this interview on location in Santiago. Buen Camino!

I was so glad to hear about this 12 Step approach for walking the Camino. In this interview, we discuss how walking the Camino gave founders, Mark Lane-Holbert and Bob Shea, the idea to start a Camino specially designed for anyone currently in any type of 12 Step Program or anyone supporting someone in a program. We also discuss their upcoming Recovery Caminos happening this May and September. There's still room in both groups, so if you know of anyone that may be interested, please feel free to share this information. They also run a virtual Recovery Camino on Camino for Good. Thanks to Mark and Bob for so generously leading this important effort for the Camino Community! Recovery Camino

Nagela Ampudia first came to my attention after reading her posts on the Camigas Facebook Group. Her posts were raw, real and so intriguing to me. I’ve been following her journey ever since and our schedules finally matched up for a chat. I have such deep affection for Nagela. She’s a great storyteller, a precious pilgrim, with tremendous courage in being vulnerable and authentic. In this interview, you will hear about her walk on The Camino Frances, the many challenges she faced and overcame, and the transition back to her life afterward. I hope you enjoy meeting Nagela as much as I did! Thanks, Nagela, for coming to The Camino Cafe! The interview is also available on our YouTube Channel.

Follow our channel so you never miss an episode! This week we have Steve Walther back at The Camino Cafe Podcast to talk about his very recent Camino on the Portuguese Route. I’m not sure which one of us is the bigger Camino Geek! I always love talking to Steve. This interview was no exception. Things get deep with some great insights and very funny at times. While Steve has a wonderful sense of humor, he’s very serious when it comes to how much he loves his family and the Camino. I am in deep gratitude to Steve for all of his personal support for me, for this podcast, and for how he gives back to our pilgrim family. He’s always offering tips and advice to folks who have questions about the routes he’s walked. Thanks to Steve for sharing his stories and to you for watching this conversation. When Whidbey Island Native, Andy, reached out to me to tell me his Camino story, he had no idea that Dan Mullins had mentioned him to me months ago. As soon as I read his message learning he was bringing his 8th-grade daughter, Lily, to Spain to walk soon, I was even more intrigued. I enjoyed our chat so much. I love that Andy has made a promise to both his daughters that once they reach 8th grade, he will take them on a Camino Pilgrimage. Andy feels the Camino has helped him to better deal with anxiety and some challenging health issues with Graves disease. The story of his first Camino is really moving, including how he had to abandon it and return to finish. He and his family are currently living in Germany. He and Lily are now walking from Leon to the end of the world. We will meet up in Santiago when they arrive for a follow-up interview. Stay tuned!

This interview with Texas-based Pilgrim, Major (Ret) Jan Rose, US Army Nursing Corps, just humbled me over and over again. What an honor it was to be able to interview Jan after she walked with “Warriors on the Way”. I didn’t know anything about Jan’s walk or life prior to our chat. Halfway into the interview, I just wanted to pass the mic to someone like Oprah as Jan’s story feels as if it deserves to reach an even wider audience. During our chat, we discussed how The Camino helps with PTSD, and in particular, how it helps everyone prepare for future life challenges that will undoubtedly come our way as humans. Many of her stories about serving in Iraq, helping a fellow Pilgrim during her walk, and what it was like standing at Cruz de Ferro with fellow soldiers are just a few that brought strong emotions up for me. I hope you will listen, watch, and help me share her story with others.

I could have spoken with US-based Pilgrim, Dr. Renee, for hours! We discussed how her personal pilgrimage impacted her and how special it was to walk with the Pilgrims walking with Warriors on the Way©. This program is a 501(c)(3) Veterans’ organization founded by Camino Pilgrim, Father Steven Rindahl. Dr. Renee has walked with Warriors on the Way during two pilgrimages and will join them again in Fall 2022. In this interview, she shared how walking a pilgrimage helps with treating PTSD and Moral Injuries. Hearing her accounts of the power of pilgrimage reinforced my enthusiasm for both walking the Camino and continuing to support this amazing organization. I hope after hearing this interview, you will visit this link to learn more about Warriors on the Way and consider donating to support our Veterans in healing:

Lisa was a delight to interview. She is a professional Photographer and Real Estate Broker based in the US. She has walked The Camino several times including Pilgrimages with her Son and walking backward from Muxia to Porto. Lisa has tirelessly given back to the Camino for several years as an American Pilgrim Chapter Leader for the Boston area and as a hospitalera at several donativos in Spain. In this interview, we discussed photography tips for The Camino, the types of places pilgrims can choose to stay overnight, what it takes to be a hospitalero on The Camino, and much more. I hope you enjoy and benefit from our conversation. Buen Camino!

What fun it was to talk about the Camino with veteran Pilgrim, Dr. Guylene Gigi Tree. Her Camino spirit is so vibrant! I would love to be one of the lucky Pilgrims she has walked with along the way. Gigi says is all about the people you walk with and meet along your journey. Her exuberance for supporting the Camino and her positive outlook on life is so uplifting. She has written two Camino books and the third one is almost ready to be published. Her books are packed with wonderful stories and tips for walking. In this interview, you will hear how she has learned to pack super lightly, how she maintains her kosher diet while walking, and how she's never met a stranger. Enjoy! Buen Camino!

Meet G. M. T. Brosius, a US Citizen residing in Spain, a Camino Pilgrim, and the author of the recently published book, A Daily Pilgrim Devotional. G. M. T. walked the Camino Frances. In this interview, you will hear about his Pilgrimage and how it and the Covid lockdown inspired him to create this gift of a book for Pilgrims. You'll hear how thoughtfully he selected the quotes and readings to accompany Pilgrims as they walk across Spain. I personally used the book during my last Camino and I found the readings to be very inspirational. Talking with G. M. T. about the time and care he put into writing this book for we Pilgrims, really touched my heart. I hope you enjoy our conversation. The photo for this episode was one of his favorite photos taken during his walk. Buen Camino!

It was my pleasure to sit down with U.S.-based, Anne Born, for a chat following her most recent Winter Camino this past December. Anne has walked numerous times documenting her journeys on social media with the hashtag, “littleoldladywalking”. I joked with her that in my opinion, she is anything but a “little old lady walking”. To me, she is one brave, smart, and accomplished Pilgrim! Anne is an expert on the Catedral de Santiago. and on walking winter Caminos. She is an award-winning author, now working on her third Camino book. She has already published If You Stand Here: A Pilgrim's Tour of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and Buen Camino! Tips from an American Pilgrim. In this interview, you will get to know Anne better through the stories and tips she shares about walking The Camino and you will hear so many interesting facts and stories about the Cathedral. I love learning from Anne and I feel blessed to call her a friend and fellow Peregrina. Buen Camino!

Canadian Pilgrim, Rocco Rossi, has walked The Camino thirteen times! His first walk was to help him process the grief he felt after the untimely loss of his best friend and business partner. Rocco, while struggling to deal with this tragic loss, luckily came across a newspaper article about The Camino at one of his lowest points. A week or so later, he was headed to walk that first of thirteen Caminos. Rocco’s entire outlook on life and work completely changed after becoming a Pilgrim. During this talk, you will hear several wonderful stories about his Caminos, the various routes he's walked, the folks he met along the way, and his first time leaving stones at Cruz de Ferro. Most inspiring to me is how the Camino helped him process his grief, transform his life, and how he is now paying it forward. Rocco says the Camino reignited his inner light. I hope you enjoy listening to our conversation. Please share it with a friend that hopes to walk a Camino.
Here’s a link to Albergue de Peregrinos Duesos. This is the Albergue Rocco mentions that his dear Pilgrim friends recently opened on The Camino Norte: https://www.facebook.com/alberguedeperegrinosduesos

Felices Fiestas from Rabanal del Camino and The Camino Cafe! See the notes below for the names of Albergue and Cafe owners in the opening of today’s interview. I’m so happy to post this interview that is so full of hope, love, and light as we close out 2021. Suzanne, Camino Pilgrim, social worker, teacher, and writer, offered so much wisdom about walking the Camino. What started as a way to “reset” at age 60, turned into way more than Suzanne ever anticipated. So much so, she wrote a book to help her process the amazing journey she started in St. Jean. Many times during this interview, I just wanted to stop, and, as they say, “drop the mic”. I found her insights and the way she articulated them so profound. I can’t wait to read her book about walking the Camino Frances and how the connections she made along the way turned into moments of wondrous illumination. Buen Camino!
Thanks to podcast friend and supporter, Mark Krahling, for introducing me to Suzanne!
Thanks to the residents of Rabanal del Camino for so warmly welcoming me to the village. They are so eager to see everyone in 2022! In order of appearance:

In this conversation, we caught up with Roger, who we last spoke with when he was in Astorga in mid-August (Season 1, Episode 28). Since then, he completed his Camino, returned home to Seattle, and made a major life change. Ruth, his partner, joined us for part of this conversation as she met Roger in Sarria and they walked on together to Santiago. Roger’s walk did check off a major bucket list item, but his main intention was to connect with people he met as he walked. Along the way, he formed very deep bonds with fellow pilgrims. We talk about doing a Camino the way you want to do it without shame. Roger faced judgment during his walk for taking a taxi and on social media for a daring photo by the 100km Marker. Roger also discusses what it was like to walk with 2 major celebrities that were walking at the same time he was. Ruth added so much to the conversation when she joined us. She talked about her own pilgrimage, changes she saw in Roger after he had been walking for several weeks, and how fun it was to meet all of his pilgrim friends. Both, Roger and Ruth, talked about the challenges in walking with someone and what it’s like when your partner meets you for the last part of your journey. I think Roger and Ruth are just delightful and I would’ve been honored to have walked any stage with them. You can connect with Roger on his popular podcast, “The Crossing It Off Podcast, What’s on your Bucket List?” I hope you will give his podcast a listen and that you enjoy their Camino stories.

Welcome back, everyone! I just wanted to say a quick hello as so much has happened since our last episode with Russ in September. Big news, I walked a Camino and even bigger news, I moved to Spain! Buen Camino!

Welcome to the first episode of Season 2!
Camino Pilgrim, Sanjiva, is a doctor in Melbourne, Australia and he walked the Camino with his adult son, Shivantha. He later wrote about this journey in the Camino memoir, Strangers on the Camino. In this interview, you will hear several unique tips for walking a pilgrimage. You will also hear how the Camino transformed a Dad and Son relationship into one with deeper friendship, increased love, and respect for one another. If you are planning on walking a Camino with someone, you’ll benefit from hearing how they approached their walk and how those approaches strengthened their relationship and enriched their walk. I love how Sanjiva’s pilgrimage shows how one man went from being a stranger to a deep friend to his son, to Spain, to Catholicism, to the people he met along the way during and after his pilgrimage. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did!

I really enjoyed this conversation with Molly Lord. Molly's story leading up to her going on the Camino and her experiences while walking really inspired me. We first bonded online discussing St. Mary and our interest in archetypes. Molly is in the last stages of writing her Camino Memoir. I've had a sneak peek and she is a gifted writer! Molly, when not walking, is an educator, speaker, and a music and mind master. We discuss her work with music and archetypes and how she applied it to her Pilgrimage. To learn more about the workshops Molly offers, please visit the link to her website below. It is fascinating! Molly also offered lots of tips for those planning a walk. I hope you enjoy our chat! Buen Camino.

What a thrill it was to meet the popular bloggers of Viva Espana, Kelli and Jeff! After walking a Camino with their daughter, Kelli knew she had to move to Spain. Jeff, being a life-long adventurer, was game and they made the move. The US Ex-pats first landed in Valencia but soon moved to Galicia right on the Camino Frances! In this interview, you'll hear about their adventures in Spain and what it's like to live on the Way. You will also hear more detail about some of the observations they've written about in some of their most popular blog posts. As seasoned Pilgrims, they offered up some great tips for your future Camino. They have big plans for giving back to the Camino Community from their new home outside Melide. I can't wait to see how it all turns out! They were getting ready to head out for their next Pilgrimage right after talked. I hope you enjoy meeting Kelli and Jeff as much as I did! Buen Camino!

I can't think of a better way to close Season 1 than with Russ Eanes. What an amazing Pilgrim. I enjoyed his Camino memoir, Walk of a Lifetime, so much! His book really inspired me. In particular, I can't get this quote out of my mind...."Better to die with your memories than your dreams". In this interview, you will hear us chat about the "Camino for life attitude", Camino Magic, The Camino River, A glimpse of Heaven, and packing tips. His book is loaded with tips, inspiration, great quotes and points to ponder and savor, and educational references from writers that we don't hear about often enough. Russ walked the Frances from St. Jean with 12 principles that I think would help any Pilgrim. His wife, Jane, joined him in Sarria to Santiago. I just loved every minute of this interview. I am so glad I had the chance to chat with Russ before walking my next pilgrimage. I hope you enjoy our conversation as well. Buen Camino!

Meet the founders of The Pilgrim House, Faith and Nate! It was a delight to sit down with them and learn more about The Pilgrim House, why they started it, the steps they took over seven years to open it, and their own pilgrimages. The Pilgrim House, a non-profit endeavor, is located in Santiago De Compostella and serves the Camino Community as a Welcome Center "....a place for pilgrims to find respite from their walk and take time to reflect: reflect on their Camino, reflect on life, and reflect on what may lay ahead..." (from The Pilgrim House's Website). Faith and Nate offer many, many services there....including printing boarding passes, a place to cook a meal, and most importantly, guidance for post-pilgrimage processing. Also, hear some great tips for your next Pilgrimage from two Pilgrims who have experienced the Camino from two perspectives....through walking it and serving the Pilgrim Community. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. I can't wait to visit them in Santiago soon. I hope when you walk next, you will stop in at The Pilgrim House and enjoy their offerings! I was honored to have the opportunity to interview Phil Volker during the recent Caminohead get-together at his home on Vashon Island, Washington. Phil walked over 500 miles on a Camino path he built in his own backyard while receiving treatments for Stage 4 Cancer. Filmmaker, Annie O'Neil, introduced most of us to Phil in the beautiful film she made about his journey, "Phil's Camino: So Far So Good".
Phil is no longer taking treatments and he is currently on hospice care. As always, Phil is not letting this stop him from continuing to share his life's lessons nor tending the corn in his garden. Phil has much left to say and I think many folks will find his words here so inspiring. In this interview, Phil and I chat about the Camino he built after the cancer diagnosis in 2009, his spiritual journey to Catholicism, how he and his wife Rebecca met, being a Marine Veteran where he served as a Rifle Range Coach, the difference between curing and healing, how the Camino epicenter is within the people that have walked it, and how the 4C's, "Camino, Cancer, Catholicism, & Corn", have transformed him and his life. I hope you enjoy our conversation. Buen Camino!

Roger Williams, a Seattle-based Pilgrim, joined me live today from his walk on the Camino Frances during a stop in Astorga. Walking the Camino was the first thing on his bucket list following his recovery from a heart attack during the lockdown. He is so dedicated to the importance of having a bucket list that he started his own podcast featuring folks who are crossing off bucket list items. The podcast is called "The Crossing It Off Podcast". In this interview you will get training and packing tips from the road, his experience traveling to Spain, what it's like trying to find accommodations right now with the covid restrictions, suggested apps that are helping him with journaling and posting on social media about his walk, what he's spending each day while walking, and the importance on "belonging" as you walk. We will have Roger back soon for Part 2 after he crosses off this Camino! Buen Camino!

Robyn-Lee Nichols, a South African-based Pilgrim, is The Perpetual Pilgrim. After walking her first pilgrimage in 2019, she took a look at her potential life timeline and then set the amazing goal to walk 25 more Caminos in her lifetime. During the interview we discuss the process of a reality check on how much time you have left in your life to still achieve your goals, her favorite luxury item she packed during the Camino, dealing with physical pain off and on the Camino, and how to deal with things when your walk doesn't go as planned. When she's not walking, Robyn-Lee is a Mindset Coach. I think she demonstrates during this interview what an inspiration she is to her clients! I love her social media posts and suggest following her for daily inspiration. I hope you enjoy our chat. Buen Camino!

If you haven't read Alexander's book yet, I strongly urge you to read it prior to walking and even after walking! I sure wish I would have read it before my first Camino. Alexander, a veteran Pilgrim, is also a best-selling author, well-known speaker, anthropologist, and psychologist. He serves the Camino community as a pilgrimage mentor and retreat leader. In this interview, you will hear us chat about his own Camino transformation, the hero journey and how it applies to Pilgrimage, and his seven-step process in making a Camino a Rite of Passage. It was an honor to have Alexander visit us at The Camino Cafe. The guidance he offers in this interview is helping me to continue the processing of my 2019 Pilgrimage. I can't wait to use all of his suggestions from his book when I walk my next Camino. Buen Camino!

Sven is a Pilgrim based out of Germany, a mindfulness teacher, a Camino Guide, a professional photographer and filmmaker, and soon-to-be-published author. He's walked over 15,000 kilometers, walking numerous routes around the world and several and less traveled Camino Routes. Just speaking with Sven is a calming experience. In this interview, you'll hear about his Caminos, how to be more present in order to enjoy the richness of the moment, the Camino magic he's experienced, how the Camino delivers all the time if you are ready to receive it, and the importance of nourishment. I'm adopting his walking mantra that he mentions around the 52-minute mark "One step more, nothing else to do." I hope you enjoy this conversation and getting to know Sven as much as I did! I encourage you to also watch his beautiful documentary shot on the Camino (link below). Buen Camino!

What a soulful conversation I had with Australian Pilgrim, Mark David Walsh. He is passionate about his career in education, his work with Reconciliation Australia with First Nations People, and training to be a Spiritual Director. In the interview, you will hear us discuss his Caminos, his time in the Holy Land, the outer journey and inner transformation of pilgrimage, the importance of space and time, the ritual of the Ignatian Examen Daily Prayer, and how "a face becomes a name, a name becomes a story". I am so glad to have had this opportunity to spend with Mark. I hope you enjoy and benefit from the wisdom he shares here.

After walking their Caminos, Ray & Dominique Powell, fell in love and bought the albergue, Casa Banderas. Many of you may remember walking past this albergue known for all the beautiful flags outside. It is located about 20 km after Sarria, approaching Portomarin in the tiny village of Vilacha. They will soon be open to receiving Pilgrims later this Fall. In this interview, you will hear about Ray's Camino with his Dad and the Camino he and Dominique took together. You'll also learn about their challenging experiences during the lockdown with obtaining their Visas to move to Spain and to operate the albergue. I absolutely love their energy and I can't wait to stay with them soon!

In this video, you'll hear a first-hand account of what it's been like to travel recently, how the Primitivo compares to the Frances, foods you can expect while walking, what the Cathedral Roof Top Tour is like, why "spirit and health" are so important for walking, backpack tips, and much, much more. I hope you enjoy our conversation. Thanks for watching! Please give us a "thumbs up", comment, share, and subscribe if you like what we are doing at The Camino Cafe! Acclaimed Filmmakers and Camino Pilgrims, Bill and Jennifer, just celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary. As I talked with this Australian-based couple, I was so touched by their sweet interactions with one another and their Camino stories. Bill's best-selling Camino Memoir, "The Way, My Way" is one of the funniest and most inspiring books I've read about walking the Camino. In this interview, you will hear how Bill credits his first Camino for helping him to be able to write a film about intuition. He had long wanted to make this movie after an intuitive moment saved his life several years ago. Since his solo Camino, he and Jennifer have walked several more together, led Camino tour groups, and walked additional Pilgrimage paths. You will hear how the Camino has enriched their lives so much that they now define lives as "before Camino" and "after Camino". Their beautiful and moving film about intuition, "PGS – Intuition is your Personal Guidance System", was just released in the US. Please check out Bill's book, their newest film, and more at the links below. Buen Camino! ***Please note, I had some WIFI issues during the interview so there are a few moments where the audio was impacted.

Sandy Brown joined us live today from France for a chat about traveling right now, the Via Francigena, his guide books, and his Caminos. During this interview, Sandy provides some valuable advice and insight that can only come from a veteran Pilgrim that's walked 18 Caminos plus several other Pilgrim paths. Hear his tips for self-care and traveling post-pandemic. Sandy has been such an inspiration to me during the lockdown as he walked and cycled the California Missions Trail. He will soon be publishing the first official guides for this important path in the US. If you are planning a Pilgrimage soon, be sure to check out Sandy's guides and his website. Thanks, Sandy, for coming to The Camino Cafe!

What a delight it was to chat with Camino Pilgrim and Author, Stephen Drew. His book, Into the Thin: A Pilgrimage Walk Across Northern Spain, is a very vulnerable account of how the Camino helped him navigate the aftermath of a very dark year where he faced several major losses. Stephen is such a wise guide for all Pilgrims and especially for anyone that has faced loss. Stephen's story really touched my heart and helped me gain a better understanding of my own grieving process. From the start of this interview, you'll hear that Stephen's call to walk was not the typical story we are used to hearing. I hope you will give this episode a listen as I think it will be of great benefit to those who are still processing their Caminos or are considering walking someday. Thanks to Stephen for visiting us at The Camino Cafe. Buen Camino!

Carol had no idea how walking the Camino several years ago would transform her life. After that first pilgrimage, she moved to Spain and opened not one but two businesses. She currently runs a successful English school and a Camino Tour Business called Camino Confidence. I love how passionate she is about helping other women gain confidence through walking the Camino. While Carol has always been adventurous, midlife brought some new challenges that she learned to overcome through lessons on the path. I love how open she was about sharing her story. During our chat, I found her enthusiasm uplifting and her courage so inspiring. In this interview, you will also hear an update on how things are going along the Way and in Leon. Buen Camino!

You've heard me mention Jackson before! He is the Pilgrim that wrote, performed, and gifted us the opportunity to use his original song, "Finisterre", as our intro and outro song here at The Camino Cafe. He tells the story of what inspired him to write this song when he reached "the end of the world" after walking the Frances in 2015. Jackson shares with us how the Camino taught him to rely on his heart's compass and to trust the process. He also gives some great tips for keeping your feet healthy during your pilgrimage. Jackson has one album now available on Spotify and is releasing a new one in mid-June which includes the song he plays live during our interview, Two Young Women from Durango. Buen Camino!

For this episode, we rename the show per Steve's suggestion, "Camino Cafe y o Vino"! So fitting as this conversation was just like the ones I had during the Camino....sometimes funny and light and then moments later, deep, vulnerable, and heartfelt. Steve is just one of those Pilgrims you connect with right away. I know we would've been in each other's Camino family had we walked at the same time! We are both proud “Camino Disciples of Dan Mullins (of the My Camino, The Podcast, fame). Steve often repeats what he calls “Mullinisms” when trying to explain the Camino. His stories about his own walk and the walk with his Daughter are entertaining and emotional. I especially loved the magical story he shared about "Manitas de Mocho". I hope you enjoy meeting Steve as much as I did! Buen Camino!

This heart-centered Pilgrim has walked the Camino multiple times on several different routes, started a Camino Experience/Tour company, and just added the accomplishment of being a best-selling Camino Author. But for me, I may be most astonished that Elena walked a Camino with her 6-month-old baby Daughter and also walked with all three of her children, which at the time included a Toddler and a teenager to boot! This discussion though is one for the soul! We talk in-depth about Camino Magic and having trust that the solution is always just around the corner. Her story of how her book, Camino Mysteries, came into being is fascinating and the storyline is so intriguing. I hope you enjoy meeting Elena as much as I did. What an inspiration she is for all aspiring Pilgrims!

Lorenzo "Peregrino" Merin gives us a live update from the Camino Frances and shows us that the Camino is coming back to life! He did this interview from the garden of an albergue and you'll get to feel like you are on the Camino as we got to meet a couple of other pilgrims currently walking. You'll gain great advice from this interview on what to expect if you are going to walk this summer. Lorenzo shares so many heartwarming stories from his many walks starting from his first Pilgrimage in 1993. He loves the Camino so much that it has become his vocation. He lives on the Camino Ingles and gives back by facilitating Camino walks for other Pilgrims. In this interview, you will hear some great stories about Don Elías Valiña, the parish priest in O Cebreiro who revitalized the Camino by creating the idea of the yellow arrow markers, and how the Camino transformed Lorenzo's life and taught him so many great life lessons. Lorenzo has a Pilgrim's heart. He brought me to tears several times during the interview. During this interview, I could feel the energy of the Camino alive and kicking! I'm so looking forward to my next time on the Camino! Please subscribe, share and comment. Let us know you enjoyed the interview with a thumbs-up and a comment. "Many people start their journey on the Camino as a hiker and end it as a pilgrim. The pilgrims of centuries ago had the same fundamental question as pilgrims on the path today: Where do I come from and where am I going." - Reino Gevers, Deep Walking
In this interview, Reino and I discuss his 12 Caminos and all the lessons he has learned along the way. His book, Deep Walking, is a wonderful guide before, during, and after a Camino Pilgrimage. Learn about how mindfulness can transform your Camino experience in the most amazing way. We do a deep dive into why pilgrimages provide such amazing opportunities for transformation. We chat about how Reino's first two Caminos guided him from leaving a career and a relationship that no longer fulfilled him to becoming a Spanish-based Camino Mentor, Author, and podcaster. He's hosting an amazing retreat in Majorca this Fall. I sure wish I could go! I hope you enjoy this chat. We would be so grateful if you would give us a 5 Star Rating and Subscribe, if you like what you are hearing. We love connecting with Pilgrims who have walked or are getting ready to walk.

As Jose says in this interview, you start as "one" on the Camino but you end up with "one + a thousand". Come walk with us as Jose gives us an update on the Camino from his viewpoint in Pamplona and from his recent walks on the path. For Jose, it's all about connection with fellow Pilgrims and providing ways to showcase the Pilgrims that walk the Camino. You'll hear some great stories about his own pilgrimages and what led him to create El Camino People. It's evolving all the time and now offers Camino guidance and coaching, a non-profit that helps the infrastructure on the Camino, a wonderful podcast in English and in Spanish, and much more! I always love chatting with Jose and seeing all the great ideas he's putting into action to pay it forward so the other Pilgrims get to experience the Camino. I hope you enjoy our conversation. I loved getting to meet Brian Skillen and hear about the Caminos that inspired him to write the historical fiction and bestselling Camino book, The Way: Through a Field of Stars. He has some great Camino magic stories including his first arrival in Santiago and how his book came into being. He has overcome some big life challenges to become a world-class dancer and author. His first book just received the prestigiousEric Hoffer Book Award. Now, he's ready to publish the follow-up book in his series, Back: Through a Field of Stars. What an honor it was to interview Pilgrim, Podcaster, and Musician, Dan Mullins! I've walked many, many miles listening to him interviewing Pilgrims and enjoying his Camino-inspired music. It was a pleasure getting to know the Pilgrim behind the most popular and longest-running Camino podcast. Dan really opens up here and shares some amazing stories and insights from his own journey and what he's learned by interviewing over 200+ Pilgrims. Dan has shown me true Camino Family support by supporting me in starting up this Podcast. He is a gift to the Camino community and the work he does support all Camino Pilgrims who have walked or are hoping to walk someday soon. Fermin is living proof of how the Camino provides exactly what you need! Fermin grew up in Spain and became a successful architect. Hear how what was supposed to be a "short 3-day walk" along the Camino four years ago this week, turned into not only a full-on Camino Pilgrimage but a total life transformation. He set out to get some solitude but the Camino had other ideas for him on the day he became Guest #30 at Casa Susi. Learn how the universe had been prepping Fermin all along to be the perfect co-host supporting Pilgrims along the Way while finding love and a great new life in a small village on the Camino Frances!
This year has been a tough year for Fermin and Partner Susi, at Casa Susi. With the lockdown, there have been no Pilgrims staying and that has been further compounded by the unexpected need for expensive roof repairs that must be made to save this beautiful donativo. Casa Susi is inspired out of love for the Camino and the Pilgrims that walk it each year. If you are moved by her story, have stayed there, and/or hope to stay there when the Camino reopens, please donate to the Go Fund Me fundraiser that was started by a friend of Casa Susi. Let's work together to make sure Casa Susi is there for we Pilgrims when the Camino reopens!

Hear about her numerous pilgrimages, how she found her house, remodeled it, and how a beautiful love story unfolded between her and guest #30 and now partner, Fermin. Meet Tanya Valdes, an American Pilgrim, who made her dream come true of owning an albergue on the Camino! She achieved this after surviving cancer, walking numerous Camino's in celebration, searching long and hard for the right location, and then lovingly restoring the perfect place to convert into an albergue. Tanya's place, La Cala A Pilgrims Inn, is on the Coastal Portuguese Route in the beautiful Spanish village of Oia. As soon as you meet Tanya, you will see that both she and her lovely inn are true lanterns for the tired Pilgrim ready for a great night's restoration after a long day of walking! Check out the link to her website and Facebook page below.
