Cult leaders have present themselves as Pastors of a church. Today we will discuss how to differentiate between a cult and a church. Key Points: A skeptical man sees little difference between a religion and a cult. The Sheppard takes care of the sheep. The sheep don’t take care of the Sheppard. The church belongs to the Lord, not a preacher or charismatic leader. When I was 25, I found myself in the midst of a quarter-life crisis. My business failed, my relationship was falling apart and I lost the things I valued most. During the same week, I began Bible Study with a pastor and saw a psychologist. Since then, many Christians have asked if a true believer really needs a psychologist. Key Points: There are countless key verses that say we should take all of our cares and problems to the Lord in prayer. There are many cultural and religious stigmas around therapy. Therapy is viewed as showing weakness or lacking faith. Christs see specialists for medical and financial advice. Why not seek the advice of a psychologist? Have you ever noticed that the vast majority of people that profess Christs seem to fall away within a few years? I believe the modern church does a horrible job of setting expectations for a new life in Christ. Key Points: Telling new Christians they will get their heart's desire sets them up for false expectations. Two Christian opponents may both pray for victory. Complete faith in a lie does not make it true. Many people believe in false prophecy. God does not bend to their faith. God never promises we won't have storms. He promises to go through them with us. Recently I have been doing a lot of self-study to be a more balanced man. In my study, I learned about many cultures having a rite of passage to so symbolize maturity. I wondered if Christians have any rites of passage. Key Points: A Rite of passage is a ceremonial event that marks the passage from one state to another A wedding ceremony symbolizes the end of two separate lives beginning of a new life as one. Baptism pictures the death of one's old self, burial, and resurrection in Christ. The other day I overheard a video of an older man teaching a young man about forgiveness. The sound advice came from a familiar but unlike voice. It was none other than "Iron Mike" Tyson. Today we will examine how his advice lines up with Christian Concepts, drawn from the Bible. Key Points: There really is no limit to the number of times Jesus expects us to forgive a person that offends us. Even while we are God's enemy, He is willing to forgive us and offers reconciliation. Vengeance belongs to the Lord. We all reap what we sow. In high school, I learned about the excesses of medieval churches. It was music to my ears because the church I attended was very materialistic and wasteful. I told my mother I no longer wanted to give money to the church. I learned some valuable lessons. Key Points: God requires us to give, not the church. He doesn't need our money but giving is a blessing. The leaders of the church will have to give an account to God for their stewardship of the offerings. The bad shepherds are not an excuse to stop giving. We are willing to trust God with our souls, so trusting him with our finances should be easy. I am almost 35 and have been reflecting on life. What is most important? It is possible that I am halfway through life. How can I best use my time left to serve God and others? This is a question that we can and should ask ourselves. I have been reflecting on all of this lately and I want to share my thoughts with you. Key Points: There are no Uhaul (moving/cargo) trucks behind a hearse. We were created by God and for Him. In other words, we bring him pleasure. Seeking God should always be our priority. Genesis and the Creation account are often presented as allegories or parables. Some churches even believe Genesis only reflects man’s knowledge during the Bronze age. I often hear people say God is loving and kind in the New Testament, but he was a brutal disciplinarian in Old Testament. Today we are going to discuss weather that is true or just another misconception. Key Points: Negative experiences tend to be more memorable than positive one. Therefore it is easy to overlook the good and focus on traumatic events. We can read Genesis 1 - 7 in one sitting. However, Noah's flood occured 1656 years after Genesis 1. A lot of time passed before judgment. The New Testament is about a third of the Bible, but only documents less than 100 years. The Old Testament documents over 4,000 years of events. People often say, "If it is meant to be, then it will be". Is that Biblical? Today we will discuss the role of fate, choices and consequences are seen in the Bible. Key Points: God's foreknowledge of our future does not negate or diminish our ability to make choices. God may pre-determine the consequence of a choice, however, the Bible's "if...then" statements presents our ability to make choices. We are not robots on auto-pilot or victims to fate. The Bible clearly teaches that we have freewill however, it will never overpower God’s will. Pride has many modern sentiments attached to it such as parades, having pride in our work, taking great pride as a parent, and so on. However, the Bible is fully against pride. Why? Key Points: Pride was the first sin committed in the Bible, even before the fall of Adam and Eve in Garden of Eden. Pride causes us to break the two "Great Commandments". We won't love God or others as much as we should if we love ourself too much. Pride is the most natural and subtle sin of all. Even animals in the wild think of themselves first. Have you ever wondered why so many Christians are conspiracy theorists? We range from the doubtful Thomases that are skeptical about headlines to wearing tin foil hats and building Zombie proof bunkers. Key Points: The Bible was delivered though prophecy. The Bible and Jesus boldly claim there is only ONE truth. However, there are many denominations, all claiming to be right. How did that happen? Key Points: Through history Christ was mixed with the local culture and many religions in order to appeal to people, rather than teaching directly from the Bible. Belief in a new revelation though a modern prophet or messenger causes doctrinal differences and divisions in churches. In the name of inclusivity, the message is often watered down and adapted to fit modern sentiments. The Bible says Jesus saves. So why do Christians get baptized? I became a Christian in January 2011, then I was baptized four months later. That statement may be confusing to some people. Speaking about politics, religion, and sports (in some regions) causes many conflicts. So why do Christians always want to talk about Jesus and the Bible? Let's dive into some of the main reasons. Some reasons may surprise you. Key Points: Some churches teach it is a requirement to get to heaven. Therefore, those members are doing it to get a reward. The Bible teaches we go to heaven by putting our faith in Jesus. However, it is often said you need to go to church to be saved. "Church" is important BUT not required for salvation. Today we clear up the confusion. Key Points: Jesus spent 3.5 years building a church before He was crucified, therefore it must be important. Repent is one of the most important yet misunderstood words in the Bible. There is a lot of debate about what it means and how it relates to salvation. Key Points: Only relying on Google definitions will cause conflicts when reading the Bible. True faith produces repentance. It is not "work" that we choose to do. When you see yourself as God sees you, it can't be unseen and it produces change. We dive in to John 3 to understand what Born-Again means. Jesus tells Nicodemus he MUST be born again. Also, he reveals how one can be born again. Key Points: Jesus says you must be born again to enter the Kingdom of God. Water baptism and speaking in tongues are NOT mentioned in John 3. Let's dive into four common arguments against the Bible. The Christian's job is to present the word, not beating anyone into "faith". After all, no one can be tricked or forced to believe anything. Let's define what it is to be a Christian. There is a lot of misconception about the word. The word is first mentioned in the book of Acts. After Jesus is crucified, believers were persecuted in Jerusalem and scattered abroad. The term "Christian" was firs used to describe the believers in Antioch. Key Points: The first believers did no call themselves Christians. It was a label given to them by others. According to the Bible, no one is born a Christian. In the Biblical context, a Christian is not just a believer, follower of Jesus, or a child of God. A Christian is a reflection of Jesus and lives a life that reminds others of Christ.
