In this Episode, Pete and Ed talk with Author, Archaeologist, Aviation Historian Taras Lyssenko. He Authored the book - The Great Navy Birds of Lake Michigan and recovered nearly 40 aircraft from Lake Michigan. Taras is the T from A and T Recovery. A and T Recovery (Allan Olson and Taras Lyssenko) is an American company that has the primary purpose to locate and recover once lost WWII US Navy aircraft for presentation to the American public.
They have recovered nearly forty such aircraft, mainly from Lake Michigan. The aircraft were lost during the aircraft carrier qualification conducted out of the former NAS Glenview that was located north of Chicago. The Navy had used two ships, the USS Wolverine (IX-64) and the USS SAble (IX-81), to qualify thousands of Pilots.

Major General (USAF, Ret) George Harrison is Director, Research Operations, Georgia Tech Research Institute, Atlanta, Georgia. Before his retirement from the Air Force in July 1997 after over 35 years of active duty, he was Commander, Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. He began his career as an F-4 pilot at MacDill AFB, Florida in 1962. Since then, he has flown combat in the O-1F from DaNang AB, RVN, the F-4 from Cam Rahn Bay AB, RVN and Udorn RTAFB. In later years, he flew combat missions in the F-16C over Iraq (Provide Comfort), the C-130E, E-3A and E-8C over and into Bosnia (Deny Flight and Joint Endeavor) and the E-3B over Iraq (Desert Storm). He commanded the 4485th Test Squadron, the 479th Tactical Training Wing, the USAF Air Warfare Center and served as the USAFE DO. As a civil aviator he is an FAA instructor in single and multiengine airplanes, instruments and gliders. He has flown 6200 accident-free hours in over 70 aircraft types, including 530 combat hours.

101st Airborne WWII Normandy Veteran, Sergeant Norwood Thomas Jr.

B-17 "Lazy Baby"
In this episode, 96 Year Old B-17 Bomber Flight Engineer Bob Cinibulk tells his an amazing story.
On the morning of October 14th, 1943 along with 15 others from the 305th Bomb Group, Lazy Baby set off from Chelveston in England on Mission 115, the second Schweinfurt raid, later to become known as Black Thursday. By the time they reached Aachen on the outward leg only Lazy Baby and two others of the 305th were left flying.
They were then seriously damaged and three crew severely injured whilst two bailed out. Diving from 23,000 ft to only 3,000 ft, pilot Ed Dienhart managed to escape the attacking fighters. With the ball turret gunner trapped and navigator seriously injured they proceeded at 30 to 50 feet, hedge-hopping all the way, to Switzerland and safety.
Guided by the navigator Don Rowley who, despite having both arms virtually severed, managed to steer them from memory for over an hour to Switzerland where they made a dramatic crash landing only four miles from the German border. The navigator died the following day from his injuries."

The Potomac Flight over the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery is in honor of DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and pays tribute to the services and sacrifices veterans have made to secure our nation’s freedom. This annual ceremonial formation flight is visible from Alexandria, Arlington and Rosslyn, VA. The Culpeper Air Fest serves as a home base for the ground-breaking flight.
In its day, the Texan represented the cutting edge of aviation technology, a mere 35 years after the Wright brothers’ first flight on a North Carolina beach. Over 15,000 “Texans” were built between 1938 and 1947, and approximately 400 are still flying today.

The Hangardeck Podcast team with Distinguished Flying Cross recipient Buzz Lockwood.
In this episode of The Hangardeck Podcast, “Pitchlock” Pete, Fast Eddie and Raging Rick talk with Vietnam veteran Buzz Lockwood. Lockwood is a decorated helicopter pilot. During his 2 ½ tours in Vietnam Lockwood received 3 purple hearts among other medals honoring his bravery during service.
Lockwood faced many hardships during his service, including being shot down a total of 13 times. Regarding his medals Lockwood was extremely humble stating, “There were tens of thousands of acts of valor, bravery, and courage done by Americans every day during the war – only a few people got recognized, most acts went unrewarded.”
He added that he would gladly return all three of his purple hearts, in turn for not having to endure what he did to get them, stating the hearts were basically rewarding any near death experience. Lockwood graduated from Fort Rutgers Alabama flight school, and three months later he was in Vietnam. He flew a light observation helicopter, nicknamed a Loach by the military men.
The loach helicopters took part in “Hunt and Kill” team, described less harshly by media as “Pink Teams” for the red and white pendants the aircrafts had. The Pink Teams were made up of three aircrafts – two gunships, and one scout. Lockwood flew scout, his job was to fly extremely low to the ground and locate the enemy for the gunships in his team.
Lockwood was one of the brave men who volunteered to be in the war, he was not drafted. Also he volunteered to fly scout, which was a very dangerous job. Regardless of his voluntary service Lockwood expressed, “Not wanted to fight in a war, not wanting to be in a shooting match, or to kill someone – There isn’t anything unpatriotic about that.’
Lockwood shared much of his Vietnam experience with The Hangardeck Podcast, stating that he feels dealing with such an experience is much easier if he can talk about it.

WWII Luftwaffe Pilot Mr. Hans Meyer back in the seat of the BF-109G
In this Episode of The Hangardeck Podcast, we have the privilege of talking with WWII Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf 109 Pilot Hans Meyer.
Hans Meyer was born in 1927 and grew up in Brandenburg, Germany. Ever since his youth he was interested in aviation, so at the age of 14, Hans joined the Flieger-HJ and learned to fly the Schneider SG-38 (Flying Glider). When he was 16, he earned himself the Glider Pilot Proficiency Badge ‘C’ level and signed up for the Luftwaffe a year later in 1944 to become a fighter pilot.
After Hans completed his flight training in Werneuchen with the Messerschmitt Bf 109, he was transferred to Jagdgeschwader 54 “Grünherz” and was stationed on the Eastern Front. There he distinguished himself as a fighter pilot and was credited with a total of 5 air victories.

This episode we recorded on Saturday May 21, 2016 with Pilot John "Pappy" Mays. Pappy discusses his time at the Military Aviation Museum. John, "Pappy" Mazza has been flying his entire life; as a matter of fact he took his first plane ride at the age of 1 Month. When Pappy was nine years old he was given a check ride by an FAA flight examiner and passed the check ride for a private pilot's license due to Pappy being only nine years old. On his 16th birthday, he soloed and went on to et his commercial license, single engine land, multi-engine land and instrument rating. Today, Pappy has over 4,500 hours in over 40 different aircraft, flying everything from a J-3 to an F-16. He has flown in aerobatic competitions and raed in both the formula "V" and formula one class of air racing. Today, he flies the museum's PT-17, SNJ, P-40, B-25, PBY Catalina, and of course the Spitfire. In this Episode of the Hangar Deck Podcast, the team discusses the Russian SU-24 being shot down over the Turkey Syria Border. A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet shot down a Russian Sukhoi Su-24M bomber aircraft near the Syria–Turkey border on 24 November 2015. According to Turkey, the aircraft whose nationality was unknown at the time was fired upon while in Turkish airspace because it violated the border up to a depth 1.36 miles for about 17 seconds after being warned to change its heading 10 times over a period of five minutes. The Russia Defense Ministry denied the aircraft ever left Syrian airspace, counter-claiming that their satellite data showed that the Sukhoi was about 1,100 yards inside Syrian airspace when it was shot down. The US State Department said that the US independently confirmed that the aircraft’s flight path violated Turkish territory, and that the Turks gave multiple warnings to the pilot, to which they received no response. Russian president Vladimir Putin said that the US knew the flight path of the Russian jet and should have informed Turkey; two US officials said that Russia did not inform the US military of its jet’s flight plan.
Del is a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Submarine Service. During his Navy days, Del served aboard USS Jacksonville, SSN-699, USS George Washington Carver, SSBN-656 (Gold), USS Pasadena, SSN-752, and USS Norfolk, SSN-714.
He was aboard the USS Jacksonville during her collision with a Turkish freighter in 1982, and in a cruel twist of fate was assigned to her again as his final boat – following the Norfolk – and was aboard for another collision in 1996.
In addition, to his submarine background Del is a private pilot, aviation photographer, and works in the aviation industry at Pratt & Whitney. If you know aviation, you know that company. His is the lead for the military jet engine training program.
Del says, “Writing these books came as something of an accident. I didn’t “get the bug” to write, instead, I just started writing down thoughts about my submarine career, which eventually became the backbone for Death From Below. The Boneyard Almanac came into being as a byproduct of my aviation photography. After numerous visits to Davis-Monthan AFB, I suddenly had a few thousand photos along with a desire to share them.”
He continues to say, “The Boneyard is a patch of Arizona desert full of stored and derelict aircraft from the past and present. To walk among the war-weary aircraft parked here is to take a literal trip into the past. Fighters sit among cargo aircraft, while bombers are surrounded by trainers. Regardless of what specific plane is in your view, there’s a story around how it got there and the men and women who flew it. One of service. One of sacrifice. Of times both better and worse for the airmen and the world.”
Photographer Del Laughery received unprecedented access over the last ten years to the collection itself as well as never-before-seen archival photographs. He also includes the boneyard’s connections with the USAF Museum and the Pima Air and Space Museum as part of the greater story of what happens to old, unwanted warplanes.
