“The best parent a child could have is a parent who loves themself.”

-unknown

We try to be a good parent. We often feel like a bad one. So much fear and doubt surround parenting. When we commit to the journey of loving ourselves, we enter a beautiful journey of exploration and discovery.

We are in a new frontier. It is time to break old, outdatedpatterns that no longer serve us and cultivate new patterns that do. When we shift in how we relate to ourselves, it impacts all other relationships as webecome our best selves.

How do we show up imperfectly in a world that demandsperfection?

We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to never mess up. This can do more harm than messing upitself. The pressure to never mess up is perfection. Underneath perfection lies shame and a sense that there is a right way. And if I don’t do it right, I’m not good enough.

In this episode I talk about the power of taking the pressure off, being open to messing up, and seeing the gifts that messing up has to offer.

As children we learned to be “good” and as an adult we want to be a “good” mother. But what does GOOD really mean?

Essentially, being good means to make everyone happy. And to make everyone happy comes with self-sacrifice. We expend an enormous amount of energy into avoiding conflict and upset. And that comes at a big cost.

Studies show that high stress, depression and anxiety arecorrelated with self-sacrifice.

It’s time for an UPGRADE.

Creating connections is a process that moves us towardfeeling seen, heard and understood. It’s about feeling valued and having a sense of belonging. It’s about showing up for who we are and expressingourselves authentically. It is only then that true connections form.

The benefit of connection is THRIVING.

“There’s no path to happiness.Happiness is the path.”

–Buddha

Happiness is our natural state. However, we have beensocialized to believe we must be in pursuit of happiness and that happiness comes from outside of us.

So, we search for happiness. And in this search we often tend to get lost. On this episode my guest, Bon Normandeau, shares her story andher journey back to herself and true happiness.

Bona is the host of The Happier YouPodcast, Empowerment Coach, and Public Speaker. Her mission is to empower individuals to find their own happiness, helping them navigate their uniquejourneys with greater resilience and more joy! After realizing she was lost, lacking focus and living a life of fitting in, she decided to embark on a journey to discover what living her best life could look like. Instead of justtaking the journey herself, she decided to start her podcast and share her experiences with others in case anyone else out there needed to know theyweren’t alone. She found out she most definitely wasn’t alone. She’s been inspiring action ever since.

Today, I am sharing my thoughts on Mothering. Mother’s Day can mean many things to many people. In a culture that judges mothers based on their child’s behavior, mothering can be extremely stressful. Who did I have tobe for my mother to be seen as a good mother? Who do my children have to be for me to be seen as a good mother? When we are not willing to look atour truth it will eventually come out sideways. If we don’t heal our own wounds (the things that trigger us) we WILL hand these wounds to the next generation.

“Boredom is a defense to emotional awareness.”

-Gary Zukav

On today’s episode we are talking about boredom.

Boredom is a form of resistance. It is resistance tobecoming aware of what you are feeling. This is the ROOT of boredom.

Boredom is not right or wrong nor good or bad. Boredom is natural.

We can fall into drama roles around boredom. Boredom can be empowering, building skills such asinitiative, self-reliance, and problem-solving skills as well as creativity, curiosity, and flexibility. It also builds tolerance for discomfort.

Allowing your children to own their own boredom and find their own solutions is essential in helping them build important life skills.

In this episode you will learn how to use boredom as an opportunity and ways to respond to your child when they proclaim, “I’m bored.”

Today’s episode is the third part of a three-part series defining the difference between punishment, consequences and boundaries. These threetopics are often misunderstood and can become intertwined. They are, however, very different. Today we are talking about boundaries.

Let's break it down:

Punishment – Blame. Focused on the problem.

Consequence – Support. A plan for a new outcome. Focused on solutions.

Boundaries – How I get my own needs met. Also, solutionfocused.

Boundaries is all about taking ownership of my own thoughts, feelings and actions. It is about living in alignment with my truth. Boundaries require radical self-awareness. They are liberating. Boundaries put you incontrol of you. Boundaries are between YOU and YOU even when they involve other people. It is not your responsibility to manage other people’s response to yourtruth. It is not other people’s responsibility to maintain your boundaries.

Today’s episode is the second part of a three-part series inproviding more clarity around punishment, consequences and boundaries.

I find that these three things can be wildly misunderstood.

I am offering this series to provide some clarity around how each of these is different. Often, we use these words interchangeably however, each carry a different energy, purpose and impact.

On this episode, we dive into effective consequences.

Key takeaways:

· A true consequence is about how one FEELS aboutthe impact of their choices and actions

· Effective Consequences are about taking ownershipof one’s choices and actions

· Trust must be present to take ownership

· Effective Consequences focus on solutions ratherthan the problem

· Effective Consequences create problem solvers

· Effective Consequences keep self-worth in tact

· With Effective Consequences the child becomespart of the solution

· Effective Consequences is about solving aproblem without diminishing anyone in the process

· 3 elements of Effective Consequences are:Reflection, Make a plan, Follow-up

· 3 types of Effective Consequences are: Natural, Logicaland Problem Solving

Do you find that the lines between punishment, consequences and boundaries can be blurred and confusing?

Culturally, we often change words. However, when the lens in which we look through doesn’t change, they become intertwined. I am offering this three-part series to provide you with more clarity. Through this series you will be invited to open up to new perceptions and insights.

In this episode we will dive into punishment, what it is andits impact.

In this episode I talk about how punishment:

· Creates shame & self-doubt

· Creates a barrier to decision making

· Creates perfectionism

· Erodes self-worth and creates the belief of notgood enough

· Creates separation and a “me” vs. “you” dynamic

· Is used for adult convenience and emotional relief

· Creates pleasers and controllers- (drama roles)

“There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”

William Shakespeare

Are you surrounded by negative people? Perhaps you have a child who always seems to see from the glass half empty.

I have been getting questions lately about how to deal with other people’s negative attitude. Today,I share some of the following thoughts on negativity.

What is your relationship to negativity? Did you learnNOT to be negative? Temperament can play a part in negativity. What you resist, persists and grows bigger. Are you overcompensating for positivity? How can youmanage your energy rather than taking on the energy of others?

Tune in and let’s untangle our resistance to negativity.

On today’s episode I am joined by health and fitness coachAdriana Mastronardi.

How do busy moms find time to focus on their own health and fitness? How do we stay consistent with our health and fitness goals? Adriana breaks it down for us in this episode.

Adriana is an Environmental Engineer with a master’s degreein environmental health. In 2008, she quit her job as an engineer to pursue her passion for teaching. After her 3rd child was born, she felt that she got lost in the shuffle of raising a family and working full time. So, she set out on ajourney of re-discovery. She found fitness and quickly fell in love with getting strong. She fell in love with taking care of herself first, so she could show up for those that are important to her in the right ways.

Through her journey, she realized her passion for helping other women feel good in their bodies, so she completed a nutrition coaching certification and her personal training license. She wants other women to understand the importance of making time for themselves, while using fitness and nutrition to help guide that process.

The BEST GIFT I have received is the understanding andpractice of healthy boundaries. The gift boundaries give is that it fills us up with self-respect, self-esteem, self-love and self-worth.

If you find boundaries confusing you are not alone. I too, was lost when it came to boundaries. I have been on both sides – from over giving, peacekeeping, and exhausted to discovering the TRUE MEANING of boundaries and feeling connected, calm and more peaceful.

Boundaries align us with our TRUTH. It is not your job to manage anyone else’s experience or response to your truth. Boundaries are not set through blame or payback. Healthy relationships are at the heart of boundaries.

I don't want to mess up my kids.

I don't want my kids to feel the way I did.

I don't want to do it the way my parents did.

These are comments and statements, or some version of them, that I hear from parents around the globe AND they are ones that I claimed myself.

I think what it really means is, I want to give my children a different mothering experience.

I wanted to offer a different version of what was offered to me.

I had to BECOME the mother I always wanted so I could offer a different experience to my children.

This is an INSIDE job.

We must do our INNER work to free ourselves and our children from unhealthy behavioral patterns passed down from generations before us. These not only come from our own individual family systems but also from our culture as a whole.

It is never to late to BECOME the mother you want for your children!!

Do you feel the insatiable need to be right? Or maybe yougive up being right to others to avoid conflict. Which actually means you are silenced into go along with others to get along. If this is you, you may be playing the victim in your life. If you take on the stance of, “I’m always right” you may be playing the persecutor in your life. Both roles are a way toavoid conflict and defend our own sense of self-worth. Both roles create drama and more conflict in our lives. In today’s episode we navigate the need to be right as we move from controlling to connecting.

Here we are in November and for me, I am looking to stay grounded as we head into the holiday season. In today's episode I am joined by a guest, K. Margaret Solorio, who is the host and creator of the Delicious EASE podcast and a time freedom mentor.

She lives in Northern California with her husband and two kids, and helps women live and work with more time freedom and ease.In 2020, like so many others, the pandemic flipped her life on its side. She faced some of her greatest fears and took responsibility for her happiness. It was through this journey she learned that changing her mindset and managing her relationship with time had the power to change her life. Life is what we experience. Our expectation of time and the quality of time spent make all the difference. She has created her Sparkle Time membership for women, coaching programs, the Delicious EASE podcast and shop to support women in transforming from feeling they never have enough time for anything to knowing we have more than enough time for everything. She is also currently writing a book about transforming your default mindset.Connect with K. Margaret :

Do you relate to perfection? The need to be a certain way or do things a certain way so as to not feel judged by the world? I have been known to say (quite often) that I am a recovering perfectionist. I now realize that when I can notice where perfection shows up, acknowledge it and work with it I can continue to move the needle in the direction of my truth. In this episode I talk about how perfection showed up for me last week and how I am working with it.

Did you know that 95% of what we do each day is coming from an unconscious program? This program downloaded in early childhood runs the show. It's time to bring the unconscious to the conscious where we can work with it and download a conscious more empowering program into our system. This is the power of working with the subconscious mind. Whether its through hypnosis, reinvention or the parenting program my commitment through the work I do is to empower you to create the life you most desire. In today's episode I offer you the gift of hypnosis to explore emotions in your body.

We tend to have an idea of what boundaries are. Culturally, most of us were not taught boundaries nor did we have a model for them. The traditional model is focused on compliance. It looks through a lens of control. So, typically when we think about boundaries we are looking through a lens of control. Boundaries are the opposite of control. Boundaries are the new paradigm.

In this episode I have a conversation with Kim, a Reinvention client, who went from resisting boundaries to embracing boundaries and finding the freedom that they offer.

Do you experience frustration, anger, and/or resistance with “chores” and your children? I did too and I hear many parents voice this frustration. It has created curiosity within me, and I wanted to take a deeper look at this dynamic. We also have a teenager in our home, and we have been exploring what household tasks might look like, sound like and feel like from a new perspective. A perspective of collaboration versus reward and punishment. It has been insightful as we engage in conversations and collaborate on possible solutions. One thing I have learned is that solutions evolve over time. And as solutions evolve so does the relationship.

We are taking “chores” from obligation and power struggle to collaboration and growth. It is both emotionally uncomfortable and empowering for all involved.

This is a BIG conversation and one that may create some fear and discomfort. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Are you a doer? Do you keep yourself busy all day long? Cultural messages about “hard work” and “making something of yourself” have us in the busy hamster wheel. Busy makes us feel productive and important. It’s like I matter if I’m busy.

Do you find yourself needing to look busy when your partner arrives home, or someone walks in the room or perhaps by your office? This habit of busy starts in our early experiences to keep ourselves contained and out of trouble. Maybe you received negative messages about lazy and you decided not to be that. We often overcompensate for the rejection of lazy by staying BUSY.

We continue this habit into adulthood except now it is no longer serving us. It is draining us.

Tune into today’s episode as I invite you to start recharging your batteries and use guilt as a sign you are moving in the right direction AND taking your time inventory.

As humans we all have 3 jobs. These are the gifts we all innately have – To THINK, to FEEL, To DO.

We live in a culture that values thinking and doing but falls short when it comes to feeling. We tend to leave out the feeling and do anything to keep it at bay. Rejecting this deep, intimate part of ourselves leads us to over-thinking and over-doing to compensate for avoiding feeling. Feeling is Uncomfortable. However, if we are honest with ourselves, how many of us are truly comfortable in our current life?

Over-thinking often has us in decision fatigue. Can you relate to not wanting to make another decision? Or feeling agitated every time your child asks you something?

Over-doing has us exhausted. Do you feel the urge to look “busy” whenever someone is near? Do you have the feeling of “being in trouble” or feeling “guilty” if you don’t have all those things checked off your to do list by the end of the day or week?

Do you define success in how much you achieve, produce, accomplish or how much you do for others?

On today’s episode we are bridging the gap between thinking and doing and stepping into becoming WHOLE humans. This is where fulfillment is experienced.

Are you the parent you want to be? I was not. There was a time I realized this parenting thing was not what I thought it was going to be. My image of being a parent and actually being a parent did not match up. I swore I was going to do it differently than my parents and in many ways I did but I also unknowingly carried some of the internalized behavior patterns into my own parenting journey. These patterns (like yelling) were not helpful in establishing a safe, trusting relationship with my children.

So, I had to do the work to consciously BECOME the parent I wanted to be. In today’s episode we’ll discuss how to become the parent YOU want to be.

·        How boundaries support us in becoming the model for respect and responsibility

On today’s episode we separate fantasy from reality. “Should” “Shouldn’t” and “Supposed to” put you in a position of powerlessness. It puts you in the victim role and creates drama. Do these sound familiar?

“I should go to the gym.”

“You shouldn’t do that.”

“I shouldn’t have done that.”

“You should know better.”

“What am I supposed to do?”

We often “should” on ourselves and our children. Today, I want to empower you to reframe this fantasy and put what you want into reality. This reframe will also help you to support your children rather than judge them.

When I talk about conscious parenting or connectedrelationships parents and teachers alike repeat this statement with conviction,“But they need to learn right from wrong.” I totally get it. I too was quiteattached to this belief. And of course, we want our children to be acceptedinto society. We want our children to take ownership of their own behaviors. Weall want to live in safe, compassionate environments. My question is what is EFFECTIVEin accomplishing those goals?

On this episode I challenge this popular belief and offer aSHIFT in perspective.

Most of us grew up around the message or some version ofvulnerability being a weakness. We tend to see weakness as something bad orwrong, something we don’t want to be. We cover these so-called weaknesses upand hide behind what we think we’re supposed to be in order to be accepted. Itforms shame around the parts of us that are deemed as bad or wrong. These arethe parts of us that got us in trouble. It forms shame.

This is a generational pattern. In today’s episode I sharemy story of generational shame and the hurtful patterns it created and werepassed from generation to generation UNTIL I got a wakeup call. My children aremy greatest blessings and my catalyst for growth. They rocked my world so Icould open up to a new more authentic self.  I FINALLY LISTENED TO THEM.

Do you often gain information and then wonder, "How do I integrate this into my life?" I mean, it all makes sense but then what?

Yes, it all starts with new information but there is a difference between having a new mindset and integrating new skills into daily living.

In today's episode we are exploring how to BRIDGE the gap:

*From drama to empowerment

  • From the old model (of blame and defense) to the new model (of ownership and connection)

  • From power struggles to collaboration

*From "I'm not good enough" to "I am worthy."

  • From anger to compassion

*From dysregulation to self-regulation

On today's episode we will discuss how reinvention coaching is the bridge. So, POWERFUL!

Reinvention allows you to see yourself, others and the world from a new lens AND supports you in integrating AND embodying new skills. So you not only know them, you live them. POSSIBILITY is just a call away.

We all have drama in our lives.  We often blame that drama on our kids especiallyour teens. We often may even label them as drama queens (or kings). In fact, Ithought I had the mother of all drama queens living in our home (and it wasn’tme). The truth is we all play a part in the drama in our lives AND there is away out.

In today’s episode I talk about the drama roles we play inour relationships and the alternative empowerment roles so you can GET OUT OFTHE DRAMA.

"I come from a long line of women who hate their bodies."

Can you relate to this?

I know I can! Until recently I had zero body confidence. Cultural expectations of a woman's body is traumatizing; leaving so many of us hating our bodies and disconnected from our deepest, truest self.

In today's episode Krysti Beckett joins me to talk about body confidence, self-worth and self-love.

Krysti is a Plus Size Fitness Professional and Women's Health Coach at her company, The Confident Mama. She lives in a small town in Ontario, Canada with her husband, 3 children and beloved dog, Ozzy. With more than 15 years in the Fitness industry, Krysti serves women with healthy habits and focus on pelvic health so they don't have to live with pain, leaking and other postpartum issues. She wants you to be the healthiest, most confident mama you can be, no matter what the scale says.

How do you experience fear? Fear shows up in many ways. Fear can be sneaky and at times not so obvious to detect. Fear can show up in procrastination, self-doubt, excuses, and many more ways. In fact, western traditional culture is based in fear.

Creating safe environments? What does that mean? This goes beyond physical safety.

In this week’s episode we delve into emotional safety. When we live our life believing some version of, “I’m not good enough,” we are living in a constant state of threat. This is problematic because threat works against the brain putting us into a survival state unable to access logical thinking skills. Without our logical thinking skills online we are apt to react in ways that do not feel good and don’t feel safe to those around us.

Takeaways to creating safe environments:

· Emotional awareness and regulation

· The Practice of going inward through deep breathing (which can be done anywhere, anytime), meditation, just sitting quietly and noticing what your body feels like.

· Noticing your thoughts without getting lost in them. Or noticing when you get lost in them and coming back to the present moment.

· Noticing your internal state when others express emotion or when something upsetting happens.

· Self-compassion. Talking kindly to yourself and all your emotions and internal parts, such as the inner critic, shame, anger and other feelings, as well as joy, excitement, etc.

Happy February. I’m celebrating self-love in February. Today we are talking about the Power of love and how compassion isn’t necessarily our go to. One of the most loving things we can do for ourselves and our relationships is to learn the skill of composure. This is different than “pretending” to be composed. Often we stuff feelings down and put on a mask of composure only to explode when we get home behind closed doors. Listen in and spread the LOVE.

One of the great challenges of parenting is navigating sibling relationships. This is part 1 of a two part series on sibling relationships. Parenting has two parts, the slow developing of a healthy relationship and the skills needed to navigate present challenges and problem solving. Today’s episode is a discussion on the building of the relationship.

It’s all about awareness.

To understand and navigate sibling relationships we must understand what impacts them. The building blocks of all healthy relationships are safety and trust. How secure your children feel in the relationship with you has a big impact. Other factors include temperament and parent expectations about how siblings “should” be.

Listen in to understand the dynamics of sibling relationships.

I am so passionate about healing the “not good enough” wound that I wanted to continue the conversation from last episode. I am passionate about self-worth because I spent most of my life feeling alone and not good enough. I talk and teach about this because it is what I need the most. You know what they say, “You teach what you most need to learn.”

Since starting my personal discovery journey 13 years ago I have been finding my way back to my wholeness. I continue to heal as I guide others on the journey back to their wholeness.

Together we can shift this generational pattern of lack, to a generational pattern of wholeness as we learn and grow.

Happy New Year! Let’s make 2023 the year of, I AM ENOUGH!

This feeling of “not enough” is so prevalent in our culture today. It is also at the core of many problematic issues that impact our relationships. The “I’m not enough” belief is a negative belief we hold about ourselves and it limits us to what we can and cannot do, say or be.

On the last episode we talked about distressing the holidays for ourselves. On this episode I wanted to talk about destressing the holidays for our children.

Yes, the holidays can be stressful for children too. From threats of Santa not coming to an elf who focuses on watching out for negative behavior, all play into child holiday stress. In this episode we discuss some ways to reframe from the language of fear to the language of safety.

What children want and need most from us is our engagement with them. Being present in the moment free from distractions. They want to know we are proud of them. As we validate their goodness they internalize it forming a positive sense of self. This is key in the ability to express helpful behavior.

I often find that once we gain awareness around behavior patterns we want to change, we end up discouraging ourselves by beating ourselves up for not being different. Change takes time and a commitment. Permanent behavior change is a PROCESS. We are not use to a process. We are used to rewards and punishments. This plays our internally as we reward our “good” behavior and punish our “bad” behavior.

We live in a culture that runs on a system of rewards and consequences. Consequences (as we use them in the traditional model) leaves one asking, "What will happen to me if I don't do this?" Rewards leave one asking, "What will I get if I do this?" What we want to be asking is, "What kind of a person do I want to be?"

This system is used in our homes, institutions, and work places. Tune into today's episode as we talk about rewards, consequences and a paradigm shift to effectively using consequence for the impact we want to make in the world.

Life is full of opportunities to learn new skills. Whether you're learning a new sport or how to show up differently in a relationship (including parenting) it takes time to master new skills. Often, we want to go from awareness to mastery. The way to any new skill is through the messy middle. Allowing ourselves to fall and get back up as we learn new skills builds resilience. On this episode of Beauty in Behavior we are going to talk about The Roles we play!

Boundaries are how we get our needs met. It isn't about anyone else, it is about ourselves. Often we want people to change, to take care of our needs. When we think about boundaries as restrictions on other people that's why they feel so heavy and powerless. Boundaries are Empowering, we become the leader in our own life, the creator.

Traditional model to see the contrast of our conditioning. The Traditional model is modeled on judgement. When the judgment is judged as good or right it is seen as right, when it is judged as not good or bad it is seen as wrong and we blame. We blame others for how we feel. There are not healthy boundaries in the traditional model.

Upgrade Conscious - Intentional Model - Based in acceptance. Lean into it. This is what happening in this moment and this is how we move through it. Taking ownership instead of blaming. It leads to Encouragement!! Learning and growing though mistakes! It leads to connection in all parts of ourselves. When we are connected to ourselves we can make meaningful deep connections with others. Healthy boundaries are established an maintained in this model.

Certain roles we put on ourselves. Inspired by David Emerald and Dr. Steve Karpman.

Notice when you are playing these roles.

Drama Roles - Victim, Persecutor, Rescuer

Empowerment Roles - Creator, Challenger, Coach

We need to practice these models on ourselves before we use them on others.

My challenge for you is to when you become aware of the drama roles you are playing and see if you can shift to those empowerment roles.

If you want to go deeper, become the leader of your life, book a call with me to talk about the possibilities.

This is a very special episode. Heather Chauvin is our guest on this weeks episode of Beauty in Behavior. Heather is a Wife, Mother of 3 sons, Transformation Life Coach, Speaker Author of the book Dying To Be A Good Mother, Creator and Host of the Emotionally Uncomfortable Podcast, and Soul having a human experience. This episode is very near and dear to my heart and I have deep gratitude for the journey Heather has guided me on. Holding belief and confidence in myself until I could do that for myself. We are celebrating transformation!!! I want to honor Heather for the amazing work she does to help people reinvent and resign ourselves.

You have everything you need. It doesn't have to come from outside of you. A lot of us are disconnected from ourselves. Having the self awareness to know what questions to ask yourself to see what YOU need. Getting to the point where you notice it and decide what it is telling you. Trust yourself.

How do you connect with people around you if you are so disconnected from everything in your body?

When you think of NOT Enough, what do you desire to have to be enough, you get to choose how you want to feel. What is the more that you desire? Be curious in all areas of your life.

Having someone there supporting you in what MORE you desire to help guide you and hold you accountable. Taking a stand for yourself, to make the investment for yourself. Being opened, willing to take the first step to show up for yourself, and honor yourself being worthy enough to invest in.

Have you ever had the thought, “I’m not good enough?” Most of us have. The “I’m not good enough” belief is woven into the fabric of our culture. It is a lack mindset. If you think you are not enough you will never have enough – not enough time, money, sleep, energy. Not thin enough, smart enough, the list goes on and on. How do we shift a culture of not enough?

On today’s episode I talk about how the seeds of “not enough” get planted.  Awareness is the key to creating a shift from “not enough” to “wholeness.”

Communication is key. Communication between children and adults. Power struggles are a huge issue, and we get defensive when children don't act the way we want them to. Because of the cultural belief of a well behaved child equals a good parent, and a well behaved classroom equals a good teacher. The teacher/caregivers worth is tied to the child's behavior.

All we see is the behavior and not what is happening internally. Behavior starts on the inside. It is an expression what is happening in the brain and in the body.

As a culture we moved away from physical punishment, to emotional punishment which is just as harmful, except we cant see the harm it is doing until it shows up in the behavior.

Our brains job is to keep us safe and survive. Child are energy magnets, they know by our energy if they are liked or rejected. As a child they will fight for their life to feel safe. (bite, hit, kick, anything physical)

We were trained to blame people or circumstances for making us feel upset and learned how to please the adults in our lives happy.

No one is owning their relationship with the child. Parents blame teachers, teachers blame parents, kids blame other kids and so on. Blame gets us no where, when we are blaming we are in an emotional state.

How do we integrate our brain?

We need to bring down the stress in our lives and create more peace on calm on the inside.

As adults we need new skills so we can meet the needs of our modern day children. It starts with understanding and owning our own emotions and becoming emotionally fit. We need to go deep and understand why we are getting triggered and creating this emotional reaction in ourselves.

I believe in breaking generational patterns and misguided cultural beliefs, cultivating deep connections with ourselves first and then others. which results leading a life and parenting through a place of wholeness. That is empowering.

This week notice what emotions are arising in you and notice what is happening with your children when these emotions are arising with you.

Consistent small steps create change.

There is no such thing as a quick tip or a quick fix to when it comes to our children or ourselves. When you have the wiliness to take a look at the deeper core root cause will take you on a journey of discovery. Quick tips may help you in the short term, the root cause will shift everything in the long term. Permanent change!  It shifts the pattern to healing and creates a new generational pattern.

Behavior is a communication, its either helpful or hurtful. We have learned coping skills to hide our Emotional pain. Triggers are a core issue or wound resurfacing. The pain will remain in the body until it is looked at. Everything we get triggered it is an opportunity to us to knowledge what is happening in our body and become our own investigator.

I am no longer a quick tip gal. I am into Wholeness, Empowerment, Connections, Leadership over quick tips!! Be willing to take a deeper look! You've got this and I've got you!

Today we are talking about communication styles. Often, we are not aware of the communication style we are using. Communication style matters because it impacts the quality of our relationships. If we want others to listen to us, we first must be willing to listen to ourselves.

The communication styles discussed in this episode are:

  • The controller - "Do it or else." Feels threatening.

  • The pleaser -  "Do it okay." Feels confusing.

*The passive-aggressive flip-flop - starts off as the pleaser and turns into the controller when needs are not met.

  • The leader - "Just do it"  The voice of no doubt.

Listening (or the lack of) is one of the top issues we face as parents. "How do we get them to listen?" is an age old question. I believe our mental models play into this problem. Our mental models are our internalized cultural beliefs. Some mental models may include: "Children should be seen and not heard." OR "A well-behaved child equals a good parent."  With these mental models we end up with frustrated adults and hurting children.

On todays, episode I offer another perspective and how we can start to shift these age old patterns.

I’ve been having conversations with parents about helping their children navigate social situations. In these conversations I recognized a pattern. Children were going to the adult in charge and not getting clear direction. Often, children’s call for help is seen as tattling. In today’s episode I am sharing information on how to look at tattling from a new angle. We can see tattling as an annoyance or as an opportunity to teach new skills. I talk about three forms of tattling and how to respond to bring clarity and foster encouragement.

Is parenting really about the children? I have found more and more that I believe parenting is more about us the parent than it is about the children. Today, we are taking about the unconscious childhood beliefs that are formed and how these drive certain behaviors to protect our own sense of self-worth. I believe we are here to parent our unconscious child beliefs and build the muscle to new conscious empowered adult beliefs. Part of building this muscle is through the Art of Noticing.

Our traditional practices can and often do stifle curiosity and creativity. We unknowingly trade them in, in order to fit in and be accepted. We unwittlingly hand cultural expectations to our children of who they should be and how they should show up in the world.

When we honor our own uniqueness we step into our natural curiosity and cultivate our own creative expression of who we want to be in the world.

We want to encourage our children to think for themselves, to have their own ideas, and discover their own unique gifts.

What if….

You didn’t have to change anyone

You didn’t have to change anything

You didn’t have to change yourself

We don’t change anything by trying to change it. Trying to change someone or something is about resistance. What we resist persists and grows bigger.

In today’s episode we talk about the difference between change and create. One keeps us stuck while the other moves us forward.

What did you learn about anger? Many of us learned anger was disrespectful or mean and we shouldn't have it. Culturally, as women we are taught to be nice. Being nice also means being quiet.  We learn to suppress our anger but over time it builds up and bubbles over. We end up acting out our anger rather than feeling it. We find ourselves in a passive-aggressive flip flop creating an eggshell environment and major stress.

When we are disconnected from our own anger we cannot understand and help our children connect to and work through their anger. I often hear parents say, "My child is so angry. I don't understand where it is coming from." OR "I get so angry and explode. I don't know what to do."

I too found myself caught in the endless cycle of anger, explosion and guilt. I didn't understand myself which made it extremely hard to understand my children. On today's episode we talk about understanding anger and why its showing up.

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive from mom’s is, “How do I get my partner on board?”  On today’s episode I answer this question.

Listen in on how we take judgement and blame out of the equation. Judgement and blame cause discouragement and ultimately disconnection. We add in acceptance and ownership which creates encouragement and connection. The latter creates change where the former creates a cycle of struggle and feeling stuck.

What is a good mother? Culture would have us believe that being a "good" mother is about the amount of Gold Stars she has earned. According to traditional culture a "good" mother earns gold stars when she puts everyone else's needs ahead of her own. She is everything for everyone. Another words the image of perfection.

Culture would have us believing that a "good" mother also has children who earn gold starts. Children earn gold stars by being seen and not heard. They "listen" and do everything we tell them without question. Like this is even realistic. Another words a mother is judged to be good or bad by how her children behave.

On today's episode I share my perspective on what a "good" mother is and is not.

Today we are getting inspired by triggers. In today's episode we are shifting from "triggers" as something to stop or avoid, to "triggers" as something to discover. Triggers without consciousness are hurtful. Triggers with consciousness are helpful. They are our treasure chest to our subconscious mind; a window to self awareness.

Typically, we blame something outside of us for triggering us (often our children). The truth is our triggers come from inside of us. They show up to get our attention. They alert us to old wounds that need to be seen, heard and understand. Triggers are our path to emotional freedom.

Without this understanding we stay STUCK in a cycle of blame, power struggle, and disconnection.

When we open to curiosity and discovery we can shift this cycle to one of alignment, responsibility and connection.

Power struggles are inevitable. As a parent I think most of us can relate to being in power struggle with a child. In fact, I’m sure most adults can relate to being in a power struggle with a child or someone else. As a parent I thought the power struggles would never end. Through experience and doing my research I have come to learn the one thing to end the never-ending power struggles and that is healthy boundaries.

Boundaries had eluded me as a child and as a parent. Noone ever talked about having healthy boundaries. It was all about do what ever the adult told you to do or you were in trouble. As a parent it was all about getting my children to "behave". Noone really talked about HOW to get them to behave, just do it. There are strategies and quick fixes out there but none that gave me the empowerment that healthy boundaries has given me.

Todays episode is all about boundaries and empowerment for both adult and child.

I believe the seeds of shame are planted through our social system. We tend to disown qualities in ourselves and hide these parts of ourselves for protection from pain and the feeling of "I'm not good enough."  This sets us on a path of trying to prove ourselves to gain love and acceptance. We disconnect from our true self creating disconnection and suffering in our relationships.

Today's episode is very vulnerable. I share my story from my perspective on how I believe the seeds of shame were planted in my life, how they were nurtured and grew, and how I am now on a journey of rediscovery.

Are you dealing with behaviors that challenge you? As an educator for the last 30+ years I have seen the number of behaviors rise. Not only are the numbers rising but the intensity of the behaviors is also on the rise. Why are we struggling? Who’s to blame? Is it the child? The parents? NO, to both of those. The problem is the system.

We live out behavior patterns internalized by an old outdated system. This system is built on a foundation of judgment which leads to blame and defensiveness keeping us stuck. It is problem focused and creates a culture of anxiety. This creates discouragement which creates disconnection. Where there is disconnection there is anger, resentment and hurtful behavior.  This system runs automatically.

Through neuroscience we now have new information and a new upgraded system. This new system is built on a foundation of acceptance. Acceptance leads to responsibility and owning what is. This creates a culture of safety. It creates encouragement which leads to connections. Connections create healthy relationships which result in helpful behavior.

My Child Doesn’t Take No for an Answer

We can all probably relate to our children’s resistance to taking “No” for an answer at some level. It may seem at times that our children are relentless at insisting they get a different answer. Why do they keep asking over and over?

One question we may want to ask ourselves is, How often do we take no for an answer? Do we repeat ourselves over and over to our children until they finally agree to do as we say? Are we listening?

In today’s episode we dive into communication and becoming aware of our intent.

What does connection really mean?  We hear it all the time - build connections with your children. What does that mean?

In a culture where we often strive to become who we think we’re “supposed” to be it can be difficult to let our guard down and feel safe enough to truly connect.

Meaningful connections require us to put down our armor and be seen for who we truly are. It requires us to put down blame, shame and finding fault in others long enough to see their humanness beyond their behavior. Meaningful connections requires compassion.

I woke this morning with this thought – We don’t value ourselves. It just popped into my head. I know this is has been true for me over the course of my life.  We were not taught to value ourselves. We were taught to value others. We were conditioned to look at the external. Please the other. Control the other. The thing is if we don’t value ourselves, we can’t truly value others.

Our actions reveal what we value. I have learned that often what I professed as my values did not align with my actions. Becoming more conscious of my actions and how I show up in the world has helped me to better align to my values and create healthier relationships.

Are you living a life or performing in life? Who are you living your life for? Are you living your life based on the expectations of others? Do you worry about what others will think? Do you avoid conflict or upsetting others?

We adapt coping skills to feel safe in a world filled with judgement. We often lose sight of who we are along the way.

On today’s episode we discuss how our self-identity is influenced by our early experiences and the impact it has on our lives which we often carry forward to our children.

One of the frustrations I hear from parents is getting kids to do chores. I remember having this same issue as my children were growing up BEFORE implementing a conscious approach to discipline. I remember thinking, why do they have to fight with me every time? Why are they so resistant? Why can't they just do it?

Do you find yourself in power struggles when its time to do chores?

In today's episode we dive into the subject of chores and teaching children responsibility.

Leaning in and owning our failure is how we free ourselves from the fear of failure.

On today's episode I share an experience I recently had with overwhelm and failure and how I was able to turn it around. It's not about beating ourselves up nor is it about denying the facts. True empowerment comes through acceptance of the facts and realigning with our goals and how we want to feel.

It's not a one and done. It's doing this work over, and over and over again creating new neural pathways and new behavioral patterns.

“The best gift you can give to your children is to become aware of hurtful patterns and consciously learn and practice new more helpful ones.”

-Dr. Becky Bailey

I believe our children's behavior is presenting us with an opportunity to shift and learn a new way to navigate our relationships with them.

With a new way comes a call to learn new skills. Today we talk about some of the skills that Dr. Becky Bailey teaches us through the practice of conscious discipline. These skills are taught in many ways through many other thought leaders however, Dr. Bailey puts them all in one easy to access place. Learn more at https://consciousdiscipline.com/

I have implemented and practiced these skills in my life and continue to dig deeper, learn from other thought leaders, scholars and coaches. As I continue to invest in myself I continue to invest in my children, grandchildren and all of others I have relationships with.

As we take responsibility for our role in our relationships our life becomes a happier, healthier place.

Today we are talking about procrastination. I have been a procrastinator since I can remember. Today I'm sharing with you my experience with procrastination, what I have learned from it and how I am busting through it.

Procrastination doesn't feel good. It weighs us down. What are the stories your telling yourself about the thing that you are putting off?

Busting through procrastination is taking a stand for yourself and coming into alignment with who you really are.

Aligning your intention with your desire = Action (rather than inaction)

Action = Empowerment

Who's fault is it? We live in a BLAME culture and demand others change. We learn to be defensive resulting in power struggles and fracturing  relationships.

Our traditional discipline is a system of frustrated adults and hurting children.

No one is at fault. No needs to be blamed. You don't need to change. Your child doesn't need to change. We need a new perspective. With a new perspective comes new opportunities to teach self-regulation, responsibility and respect.

Are you feeling drained? Overwhelmed?

Parenting takes a lot of energy. Relationships take energy. Life takes energy.

Today I am talking about how we can start taking control of our energy and feel more energized on a daily basis.

Key Take-aways:

Blame keeps us stuck in an unregulated life, draining our energy.

Lack of time is a sign of resistance.

We often try to control things that are outside of our power of control. It causes worry and stress draining our energy.

Controlling things that are uncontrollable is an energy drain.

Worry is a sign we are trying to control something we cannot control.

Regaining your energy:

  1. Accept Responsibility for own feelings and energy

  2. Composure - the willingness to shift from an upset internal state to a calm internal state.

  3. How do you want to feel?

  4. Make a plan

Today's episode deals with picky eaters. What we can do when our child refuses to eat what we consider an adequate amount or their unwillingness to try new food.

Today we discuss some do's and don'ts around food and mealtime.

Some considerations:

Shift your focus from what your child is or isn't eating TO creating enjoyable mealtimes regardless of their food choices.

Consider GIVING them:

  • Consistent meal and snack time routines

  • Enjoyable mealtime experiences  (void of power struggles over food) Engage in meaningful conversations.

  • Respect for their appetite or lack of

  • Patience and time with new foods. Allow them to experience new foods many times before actually accepting them.

*Clarity and choices - Be clear on expectations such as, to sit at the table during mealtime (whether eating or not) and the foods that are offered are the foods you get to choose from.  They have the ability to choose from the foods offered which ones they eat and how much they eat.

  • Opportunities to be involved in shopping for and preparing foods.

*A role model for healthy eating.

I am often asked what the "right" consequence for a particular action or situation is. On this episode I wanted to offer some clarity around punishment and consequences. What is the difference?

The key take away is that punishment is about getting someone to feel bad about their actions, where as a consequence is about claiming responsibility for one's actions. Punishment is a barrier to change and can diminish self worth. Effective consequences allows for the willingness to create change and can build self worth.

Today I share my thoughts on anger, love and healing. I often have people ask me why or how a child can be so angry? Where is the anger coming from?

What is underneath the anger? What happens when we take a deeper look at the anger and acting out behavior?

I believe that at the core of every being is love. We access the love within when:

  • We become aware of the stories we are attaching to our children's behavior or to our experience.

  • We understand that our triggers are internal wounds calling to be healed.

*We shift from BLAME to RESPONSIBILITY

Boundaries are an important aspect in building healthy relationships. We cannot have healthy relationships without healthy boundaries. I think healthy boundaries are one of the top issues in our relationships. The problem is we don't realize its our boundaries, or the lack of them, that is the problem. We usually see conflicts in our relationships as an issue with the other person.

What gets in the way of setting and upholding healthy boundaries for ourselves is often our traditional conditioning around emotions.

Today I talk about how our social conditioning around feelings can add stress to our relationships and how we can move towards healthier ones.

Today's episode is all about how to encourage children's feelings of self-worth.

Many of our traditional discipline practices create a culture of competition and comparison. These practices are so embedded in our culture they often go unnoticed. We may think we are encouraging our children when unknowingly we may be discouraging them.

Encouragement GIVES to the child. Discouragement happens when we are trying to GET our child to do something or act in a certain way.  Encouragement celebrates the child for who they are without a focus on an outcome.

Today's information comes from Dr. Becky Bailey's Book for Parents - Easy To Love, Difficult To Discipline.

It's easy to hide when we are uncomfortable.   It's so much harder to be BRAVE.  The fear of judgment is real!

It takes being BRAVE to :

  • Put ourselves first
  • Change our mindset around parenting and our relationships with children
  • Learn new ways
  • Look at our traditional practices and the messages behind them
  • Become aware of what we are actually modeling to our children

Being BRAVE is uncomfortable and it moves us towards FREEDOM.

On this very first episode I share my journey and how my perception shifted around children's behaviors.  I am passionate about changing our  perceptions and limiting beliefs around children's behavior. I believe that children's behaviors present us with opportunities for learning and growth both for us and them.

I support parents who want to understand their children's behavior at a deeper level. Find out about my coaching programs here https://www.dianesorensen.net/
