Shirley Russak Wachtel, East Brunswick author of the bestselling A Castle in Brooklyn, discusses the subject of generational trauma and how a daughter of the second generation of Holocaust survivors carries the parents' heartbreaking loss in her latest novel, THE BAKER OF LOST MEMORIES (Little A). A question and answer session will be held after Shirley's presentation along with a book signing.
Shirley Russak Wachtel is the author of A Castle in Brooklyn (Little A), and her latest book, The Baker of Lost Memories (Little A). She is the daughter of Holocaust survivors and was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Shirley holds a doctor of letters degree from Drew University and for over thirty-five years has taught English literature at Middlesex College in Edison, New Jersey. Her podcast, EXTRAordinary People, features inspiring individuals who have overcome obstacles to make a difference. The mother of three grown sons and grandmother to three precocious granddaughters, she and her husband, Arthur, have lived in East Brunswick, New Jersey for thirty-seven years.

She graduated from St. Michael's College in Vermont with a B.A. in English literature, and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a M.A. in English literature with a concentration in creative writing. A moth is trapped between the screen and glass of my patio door. It crawled in through some small hole. It flits about, landing on the glass and then the screen, not remembering how it got in. It flies from screen to glass, glass to screen casting its shadow on the drapes. Perhaps it will find its way out. Perhaps not.

The red and white sail catches the wind and the sunfish flies across Barnegat Bay. With my brother at the rudder, we’re two kids having fun, learning something new. Time to turn. Quick, duck. Come about, come about, come about! Blast. In the bay. Hey brother, come back for me!
El diablo by Donna Lee Golderg
Magenta is a gentle dog. Because she’s a fierce barker, Ilan nicknamed her El Diablo. On a recent walk, Magenta and Leah met him and Isabella and their dogs Ziti and Dahlia. Ilan was nervous; he didn't believe Magenta would play with their two dachshunds. Surprise! The doggy trio sniffed, played and walked together. “Amazing,” Ilan announced. ”Magenta needs a new nickname. She's no longer El Diablo. She is now Cachorrita, little puppy.”

The Black Mermaid by Shikhar Dixit
Her origins are lost in the mists of time. Shadows of rumors place her far back in ancient Mesopotamia. A Muslim cleric living in the shadow of Turkey's Mount Nemrut claims she was discovered by nomadic Homo Ergaster upon African savannahs. Physicists speculate on the black substance, resistant to any and all methods of modern forensic inquiry, including the powerful Zetawatt-Equivalent Ultrashort Pulse Laser. Her very presence induces horrific nightmares.

As a high school student, Todd was introverted, bullied and had little friends. Now, he is a fitness Youtuber, an application designer at a software company, an entrepreneur, investor and works with multiple companies for sponsorship deals. I examine the afghan, admiring the intricate designs. “Flawless,” I whisper - an unnatural warmth pouring from its stitches.

Forcing Jesse to have “afternoon tea like The Royals” felt extra passive-aggressive, even by Lisa’s standards. He’d told her before: coffee (with cake) was for happy times; while tea (with honey and lemon) was for misery: divorce, funerals, illness.
Everyone knew this. Everyone except Lisa.
Lisa loved Chamomile--it “soothed her”. Funny, she didn’t seem so “soothed” while tossing his belongings out after he refused ‘afternoon tea’.

But soon it became dark and Isabelle realized she was lost. Frightened, she whispered out loud “I wish I was home.” A shimmering fairy appeared and fluttered a silver wand above her head. Isabelle turned into an oak tree, a being very much at home in the woods.

Tova Friedman was one of the youngest people to emerge from Auschwitz. After surviving the liquidation of the Jewish ghetto in Central Poland where she lived as a toddler, Tova was four when she and her parents were sent to a Nazi labour camp, and almost six when she and her mother were forced into a packed cattle truck and sent to Auschwitz II, also known as the Birkenau extermination camp, while her father was transported to Dachau.
During six months of incarceration in Birkenau, Tova witnessed atrocities that she could never forget, and experienced numerous escapes from death. She is one of a handful of Jews to have entered a gas chamber and lived to tell the tale.
As Nazi killing squads roamed Birkenau before abandoning the camp in January 1945, Tova and her mother hid among corpses. After being liberated by the Russians they made their way back to their hometown in Poland. Eventually Tova's father tracked them down and the family was reunited.
In The Daughter of Auschwitz, Tova immortalizes what she saw, to keep the story of the Holocaust alive, at a time when it's in danger of fading from memory. She has used those memories that have shaped her life to honour the victims. Written with award-winning former war reporter Malcolm Brabant, this is an extremely important book. Brabant's meticulous research has helped Tova recall her experiences in searing detail. Together they have painstakingly recreated Tova's extraordinary story about the world's worst ever crime.

ANGUS KRESS GILLESPIE is a professor of American Studies at Rutgers University. His many books about the cultural implications of civil engineering include Looking for America on the New Jersey Turnpike (1989), coauthored with Michael Aaron Rockland, recognized by the New Jersey State Library as one of the ten best books ever written about the state.
MARK NONESTIED has lived in East Brunswick for most of his life. In 1987 at the age of 15, he pedaled across town on his bicycle to the East Brunswick Museum to learn about the town’s history. He never left, having served for almost 35 years as a volunteer researching and writing about the town’s history.
ETHAN REISS is co-author of the upcoming new book, East Brunswick: Through the Years. Having lived in East Brunswick for most of his life, he has worked under Middlesex County's Division of Historic Sites and History Services at East Jersey Old Town Village, and currently serves on the Board of Trustees at the East Brunswick Museum. He is best known for sharing rare and historic East Brunswick photographs through his various Facebook groups and pages.
NEAL STOFFERS: Retired Newark Fire Captain Neal Stoffers earned a BA and MA in Asian Studies from Seton Hall University, writing about NJ's first Chinese community for his MA thesis. He has produced 11 books based on his oral history project of the Newark Fire Department, has given 3 book talks on his work, & has also written middle grade, young adult, & adult novels about the fire service, the Amer-Asian experience, Multiple Sclerosis, & the Chinese in 19th Century NJ.

Dr. Vicente T. Zapanta is an experienced otolaryngologist located in Parlin, NJ. He serves as medical director of the Center for Balance and Hearing at Old Bridge Medical Center and Raritan Bay Medical Center. His specialties include head and neck surgery, neurosurgery, otolaryngology and plastic surgery.
Sara E. Kader, AuD., CCC-A, is the program coordinator for the Center for Balance and Hearing at Old Bridge Medical Center and Raritan Bay Medical Center. She is also board certified in precepting doctoral students through the American Academy of Audiology. Kader has been practicing for 24 years at various hospitals in the New York and New Jersey areas.

Thomas J. Gibbons, DPM, from Gibbons Foot and Ankle Group in East Brunswick will discuss the some of the more readily seen ailments that patients face. These include fungal nails, plantar fasciitis, sports-related injuries and issues, and innovative surgical techniques.
Dr. Gibbons, a member of Saint Peter’s University Hospital’s Medical and Dental Staff, is a graduate of the University of Delaware and the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine. He completed a foot and ankle surgical residency program at Germantown Hospital and Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA and is licensed to practice podiatry in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Dr. Gibbons is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the New Jersey Podiatric Medical Society and a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He has served as secretary of the central division of the New Jersey Podiatric Medical Society and is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.

This presentation will provide an overview of asthma including what asthma is, the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, as well as conditions and environmental factors that can contribute to asthma symptoms.
Denise Kosnar is a nurse practitioner (APN) and Robin Bergeron is a certified physician assistant (PA-C) specializing in pulmonary and sleep medicine. They are both members of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. They see patients independently and are passionate about assisting patients in obtaining and maintaining asthma control.
Denise grew up in Piscataway and is a proud New Jersey native. She completed her medical education at Rutgers University while working as a nurse at Saint Peter’s. When not at work, she enjoys spending time with her 2 year old daughter, Ellie, her husband, and her family.
Robin is originally from Wisconsin, but moved to NJ to attend Rutgers Physician Assistant Program. Along with her role as a PA-C, she developed and manages Saint Peter’s Lung Health Program which is a comprehensive initiative focused on screening for lung cancer, monitoring lung nodules, and managing patients with lung cancer. In her spare time she enjoys teaching fitness classes and baking.

EAST BRUNSWICK—East Brunswick Public Library (2 Jean Civic Center Drive) continues its Holocaust Remembrance Program series with "Jewish Responses to the Shoah." This online lecture will be held on Tuesday, May 25, at 7:00 pm.
Dr. Glenn Dynner, Professor of Religion at Sarah Lawrence College, will present the lecture "Jewish Responses to the Shoah: Insights from Personal Memoirs." There is a long line of memoirs about the Holocaust that compel us to "meditate that this came about," in the words of Primo Levi. For it is people's lives, rather than structures or data, that truly bring home the realities of evil, trauma, heroism, and moments of impossible humanity.
This talk surveys major Holocaust memoirs by Levi, Elie Wiesel, and more. The program includes a discussion of “The Remnant,” written by Michael Kesler, an East Brunswick resident who seems to have made all the right choices yet endured the paradoxical trauma of survival.
Glenn Dynner is Professor and Chair of the Religion Department at Sarah Lawrence College. His work explores the religious and social history of Polish Jewry. He is author of “Men of Silk: The Hasidic Conquest of Polish Jewish Society” (Oxford, 2006), which was awarded the Koret Publication Prize; and “Yankel’s Tavern: Jews, Liquor & Life in the Kingdom of Poland” (Oxford, 2014). He is a Fulbright scholar, a member of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Studies, and co-editor of the journal Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies. He is on the editorial boards of East European Jewish Affairs, Journal of Jewish Identities, and POLIN: A Journal of Polish Jewish Studies.
As a Guggenheim fellow, Dynner will study how the mass mystical movement known as Hasidism became politicized in early 20th-century Poland. His monograph, tentatively titled “Exile of the Spirit: Hasidism in Interwar and Nazi-occupied Poland,” will chart Hasidism’s emergence as both a political force and a culture of resistance in a context of coercive assimilation, anti-semitism, and, eventually, Nazi-sponsored genocide.
"Jewish Responses to the Shoah" is produced by Kesler. Since his retirement in 2006, Kesler has written extensively of his and his late wife's experiences during World War II. This is the seventh event that he has planned in a series that chronicles the history and culture of Jewish populations in Europe before the Holocaust.
"Our aim is to commemorate and celebrate the rich historical and cultural contributions of Jewish communities, beginning with that of Ukraine before its tragic extinction by the Germans," said Dr. Kesler, producer of the series. "It is our way of honoring and keeping alive their legacy as time marches on so that these once-thriving civilizations, from whom many among us are descended, are never forgotten."

Geeta Gwalani is a keen food, art and lifestyle enthusiast. While cooking is her passion, she also has a very keen sense for aesthetics and in creating beautiful & functional living spaces. Sindhi cuisine is what she grew up on and it was her heartfelt desire to preserve and enhance what she had learnt from observing her Mother. Aromas of Sindh was conceptualized with solely that purpose at heart and she has been able to put together a 100 recipes which are uniquely Sindhi and yet those that will appeal to generations to come!
When not cooking, Geeta plays the Sitar and dances Kathak. She is also a keen Yoga enthusiast.

Rose Mary Merola, MD, FAAP, discusses several topics, including:

She completed her pediatric residency at Brookdale University Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, and then completed her fellowship in neurodevelopmental pediatrics at Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, NJ.

The goal of this program is for the whole community to build bridges together in an effort to show unity due to the recent rise in anti-Asian racism. The program features a diverse group of panelists who will provide educational background and share their unique perspectives on this topic.
The panel includes Sylvia Chan-Malik, Khyati Y. Joshi and Thomas Wong. Sylvia Chan-Malik, Ph. D, is an an Associate Professor in the Departments of American and Women’s and Gender Studies at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. She talks, teaches, and writes about the intersections of race, gender, and religion, with a focus on the history and cultures of Islam and Muslims in the United States. She is the author of Being Muslim: A Cultural History of Women of Color in American Islam. She speaks frequently on issues of U.S. Muslim politics and culture, Islam and gender, and racial and gender politics in the U.S. Her commentary has appeared in venues such as NPR, Slate News, The Intercept, Daily Beast, PRI, Huffington Post, Patheos, Religion News Service, and others.
Khyati Y. Joshi, Ed. D, is a public intellectual whose social science research and community connections inform policy-makers, educators, and everyday people about race, religion, and immigration in 21st century America. She has lectured around the world and published ground-breaking scholarly and popular work in her field, while also serving as an advisor to policy-makers and a leader in the South Asian American community. Her most recent book is White Christian Privilege: The Illusion of Religious Equality in America. In addition, she is a Professor of Education at Fairleigh Dickinson University and a social science researcher whose work focuses on the intersections of race and religion in the United States. She frequently consults with school districts, independent schools, the judiciary, non-profit organizations, faith communities, and business on fostering equity and inclusion.
Thomas Wong received his Masters of Divinity from Trinity International University in 2001. Since that time he has pastored at Rutgers Community Christian Church (2001-2007) and is currently the senior pastor at Point Community Church; a multiethnic and multicultural congregation here in East Brunswick (2009-Present). As part of the Southern Baptist denomination, he has served on the Coaching Team & Assessment Team for new pastors and planters in the NJ/NY area, as well as President of the Asian-American Fellowship. He is currently a member of the East Brunswick Inter-faith Council, as well as the East Brunswick Alliance for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Drug abuse.
Instead of an honorarium, the speakers requested to have funds donated to Stop AAPI Hate, a non-profit organization that tracks and responds to incidents of hate, violence, harassment, discrimination, shunning and child bullying against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. He currently serves on the faculty at Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he has been appointed as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine.

Alyson Chananie, M.S., CCC-SLP is a Speech Language Pathologist-Clinical Consultant at Hackensack Meridian Health JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute in Edison, NJ. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ramapo College of New Jersey in psychology with a specialty in elementary education and received her Masters of Science degree in Communication Disorders and Sciences from William Paterson University. Alyson has had the pleasure of working at JFK since 2014 where she has and continues to facilitate rehabilitation of speech, language, voice, cognitive, and swallow functioning in adults and children. Alyson is a certified SPEAK OUT! ® and Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) LOUD® clinician. She leads weekly speech exercise groups (LOUD Crowd®) and directs the ParkinSINGS; a choir for people with Parkinson’s disease and Parkinson-plus syndromes. But, did you know that the Super Bowl rose out of the civil rights movement, specifically the African American boycott of the AFL All Star Game in New Orleans? Evan Weiner, a veteran sports broadcaster will take us on a journey from the birth of the Super Bowl to talk about the halftime shows and everything in between, including how the famed football game got its name.
Evan Weiner is an award winning journalist and recognized global expert of the "Politics of Sports Business". He has a daily video podcast called The Politics of Sports Business. In the United States, he has been a radio commentator, TV pundit on MSNBC, NewsMax and ABC. He is also an author of nine books and is a frequent college speaker. He has been a regular on BBC radio as well as Talk Sport London and has been quoted in Bolivian and Australian newspapers. From 1988 until 1992, Evan was a member of the Minnesota North Stars radio broadcast team. In 2007, Evan was selected by the United States Department of State to speak at Texas A & M -George Bush Presidential Library to explain how the American government partners with sports addressing 16 hand selected foreign nationals. He won the 2010 Ronald Reagan Media Award from the United States Sports Academy. In 2015, Evan was featured on the documentary, “The Sons of Ben" about the economic fall of Chester, Pennsylvania and how the city thought a soccer team would be a key to economic revival.

New Jersey is known as the Garden State, but few understand that the name was meant to highlight the fact the other states such as New York and Pennsylvania traditionally used New Jersey as their garden—a place to take beneficial resources for their own use and then bury their refuse, back when it was customary to bury your garbage in your backyard. But why? Why do some locations and some populations end up with most of the environmental problems and others reap most of the benefits? And what can we do about it? From economics to discrimination, this talk focuses on the various causes of environmental inequality and its effects, and on ways that these inequalities can be prevented.
Maritza Jauregui, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Sustainability at Stockton University in Galloway, NJ. Growing up in area of NJ where chromium blooms in recreational fields were common and where the dumping of construction debris and other unwanted materials was expected, she became extremely interested in why it was that some NJ towns always seemed to get the unwanted facilities while others seemed untouched. Dr. Jauregui’s research focuses on the social, economic and historical factors that produce environmental hazards in vulnerable communities and on sustainable solutions to promote resilience.

“Sustainable Agriculture Projects in Zimbabwe”
with Tait Chirenje, Professor of Environmental Science & Sustainability, Stockton University
Climate change is wreaking havoc in the lives of rural farmers in Zimbabwe, often leading to poor or no harvests in back to back seasons. This talk will focus on results from a four-year effort to help rural farmers transition from vulnerable large-scale field based agricultural practices like corn/soybean growing to small-scale controlled environment system like shed-grown mushroom and hydroponics. The talk will cover how the development of a demonstration center helped provide incentives for local farmers and international experiences for Dr. Chirenje’s university students.
Tait Chirenje holds a PhD in Trace Metal Biogeochemistry from the University of Florida (Florida), an MS in Earth Science from the University of Guelph (Ontario, Canada) and a BS from the University of Zimbabwe (Harare, Zimbabwe).
Dr. Chirenje works in the area of aquatic chemistry, brownfields assessment and redevelopment and the urban geochemistry of trace elements. He has worked on baseline studies of trace elements in both urban and rural areas of Florida and performed geochemical characterization of water bodies including Hammonton Lake, the Delaware River, Crosswicks Creek and the Great Egg harbor River. Dr. Chirenje currently runs the Stockton University Environmental Internship Program (SUEIP) and he and his team of 10 students and four scientists help the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (NJDMAVA)’s Environmental Monitoring Bureau (EMB) meet environmental compliance at their 27 sites in the state of New Jersey. He also advises local communities on stormwater quality and watershed management projects.
Professor Chirenje teaches courses in the field of environmental chemistry, including water chemistry, environmental remediation and biotechnology, environmental toxicology and environmental pollution and regulation. He also teaches and engages students in international sustainable development projects in Zimbabwe, Ecuador and Brazil.

Dr. Sangeetha Pabolu will discuss arthritis and its symptoms, why and how people develop it, how to prevent it and when to seek medical attention. Participants will learn about types of arthritis and their treatment options.
Dr. Sangeetha Pabolu is a board-certified rheumatologist and is currently serving as the chief of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology at Saint Peter's University Hospital. She is a core clinical faculty member in the department of internal medicine and actively involved in educating and training residents. She is an assistant professor with Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and St. George’s University School of Medicine. Dr. Pabolu’s rapport with patients, medical knowledge, and dedication as a physician contribute to superior patient care and satisfaction. She believes that comprehensive approach to patient care and careful consideration of all aspects of patient’s health is critical in appropriately diagnosing and treating the patients. Her interests include musculoskeletal ultrasound, curriculum development for trainees, teaching and active involvement in the leadership of residency program. She is actively engaged as an invited speaker in several community outreach programs for arthritis awareness and musculoskeletal disorders.

He is board certified in both pediatrics and sleep medicine. He specializes in diagnosing and treating pediatric sleep disorders, with a special interest in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea.
SLEEP APNEA AND INSOMNIA IN THE ADULT POPULATION WITH NEW CHALLENGES DURING THE COVID PANDEMIC The second half of the program features Ashgan Elshinawy, DO, medical director, Center for Sleeping and Breathing Disorders, Saint Peter's University Hospital. She will discuss sleep apnea and insomnia in adults. In the setting of the COVID pandemic, there may be fewer people willing to have outpatient testing for safety issues and therefore go undiagnosed and untreated. Insomnia is likely worsening among millions during the pandemic for a variety of reasons.

This workshop will examine colorectal cancer, the third leading cancer in the world. Arkady Broder, MD, will introduce the audience to the benefits of colon cancer screening, and ultimately, prevention.
Dr. Broder is the chief of the division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Saint Peter’s University Hospital. He holds a clinical faculty position at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and is the program director of the Medical School’s Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at Saint Peter's University Hospital. Dr. Broder is a recipient of the Excellence in GI Practice Operations Recognition Program from the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Betsy R. Dubov, RD MS is a registered dietitian and has been practicing nutrition education for over 30 years in many different capacities. She did her undergraduate training in Foods and Nutrition at New York University and her dietetic internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Ill. This internship included both clinical and administrative training. After she became an RD she worked as a clinical dietitian for several years at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City.
Ellen Ronnen, MD went into her field because she was intrigued with the science behind oncology and valued that practicing oncology often created long-term relationships with the people she treated. She attended the Albert Einsten College of Medicine, where she obtained her medical degree, and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at New York University Medical Center. She completed her fellowship in medical oncology and hematology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology.
Katherine Schaible is a licensed social worker and joined CSCCNJ in 2015. She is responsible for the daily operations of CSCCNJ’s comprehensive program of support. Over the years, Katherine has facilitated and expanded the School-Based Support Program, and other outreach initiatives for families from minority and vulnerable communities in New Jersey. She is bilingual and provides individual counseling to CSCCNJ’s participants in both English and Spanish.

Dr. Timothy Kennedy completed his medical school training at Georgetown University School of Medicine, followed by a general surgery residency at Northwestern University. Following completion of surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgery fellowships, he spent the past six years at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the section of upper gastrointestinal and pancreas surgery.

He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Hospice & Palliative Medicine. Dr. Salwitz is also a clinical professor at Rutgers Medical School and holds leadership ppositions at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital; New Jersey Medical Society; Middlesex County Medical Society, and The Amy Feinman Behar Foundation for Cancer Prevention.
Dr. Joseph (Josh) Pepek received his Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Georgetown University. As an undergraduate, he played for Georgetown’s varsity baseball team. Dr. Pepek obtained his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and afterwards served as a medical officer for the United States Navy. During his naval career, Dr. Pepek completed a surgery internship at Naval Medical Center in San Diego, CA. He then deployed to Iraq with the U.S. Navy Seabees during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also was the medical officer for the Marine Corps Chemical Biological Incident Response Force in Indian Head, Maryland. Dr. Pepek then completed his radiation oncology residency at Duke University where he served as chief resident. He has presented his research at national meetings and has authored a number of peer reviewed journal articles.

For years, Sandy Lanman knew her grandmother Elsie had escaped Germany to the Philippines only to lose her husband Gunther in the brutal Battle of Manila at the end of World War II. Aside from a few photos and family stories, she knew little else. In 2019, a serendipitous encounter on Facebook led her to Gunther’s great-nephew and a trove of photos of Elsie and Gunther in Manila. The discovery sparked her interest in the history of this little-known Jewish haven. Through film, photos and Elsie’s own words, Sandy's presentation tells the story of the rescue of 1,300 European Jews and the terrors they faced under Japanese rule during World War II.
Sandy Lanman is an award-winning writer and public relations professional. She began her career as a staff writer for The Home News in New Brunswick, where she won awards for health, medical and human interest writing. She has worked in public relations for Crossroads Theatre Company, New Jersey Network and Rutgers University, and as a consultant and writer serving clients in higher education, the arts and nonprofit sector, and is on the boards of the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission and Central Jersey Jewish Historic Society. Sandy has a B.A. in English from Douglass College and master’s in communication and information studies from Rutgers’ School of Communication and Information.

“Embracing Our Diversity: Coming Together Against Bias,” a virtual community dialogue moderated by Nancy Kranich of Rutgers University will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29.
Co-sponsored by East Brunswick Hadassah, EBPL and the East Brunswick Human Relations Council, the program aims to initiate a dialogue among the townships’ diverse communities and generate ideas for embracing diversity, building bridges and combating bias.

Kranich is a lecturer at the Rutgers University School of Communication and Information where she teaches community engagement and other courses. He has received several international travel awards to present his work at meetings of the International Society for Stem Cell Research. He then completed a residency in radiation oncology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, where he was named Chief Resident. He served as co-investigator on several clinical trials and studies utilizing advanced imaging to improve tumor control and treatment related side effects.
Dr. Lee’s professional memberships include the American Brachytherapy Society, American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Radiation Oncology.
Phillip D. Reid, MD obtained his medical degree from Stanford University, Stanford, CA and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA. He completed his fellowship in oncology/hematology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. He a clinical instructor at UMDNJ Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, NJ. Dr. Reid is board certified in Medical Oncology and Hematology.

He completed his residency in radiation oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Alicia Gomez and Sandra Menard are the National Coordinators for the Memory Screening Program at the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
Alicia Gomez has years of experience in aging research and behavioral health. She also has a Master’s in Public Health from Montclair State University. Her top healthy habits: running marathon avidly and speaking Spanish fluently.
Sandra Menard worked in management and research for several years. She has a Master’s in Public Administration and a Master’s in Community Health. Her top healthy habits : hiking and playing board games enthusiastically.
Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) was founded in 2002 by a caregiver whose mother lived with Alzheimer’s disease (1980-1992). At that time, there was little information available and nowhere to turn for support. His goal was to make sure that no other family living with Alzheimer’s disease would have to go through the journey alone. AFA provides support, services and education to individuals, families and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias nationwide, and fund research for better treatment and a cure. AFA operates a National Toll-Free Helpline (866-232-84848), staffed entirely by licenses social workers. AFA provides training and continuing education to professional caregivers and dementia-care settings. In this multidisciplinary talk conducted virtually, Dr. John Baumann, Radiation Oncologist, Princeton Radiation Oncology, Dr. Sameer Desai, Medical Oncologist, Regional Cancer Care Associates, Central Jersey, and Dr. Darshan Vaidya, Dermatologist, Aura Dermatology will discuss the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of skin cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Topics include:
- Importance of sunscreen use
- Overview of skin cancer
- Overview of dermatologic / surgical treatments for skin cancer
- Radiation Therapy as an alternative to surgery for skin cancer
- Systemic treatments for skin cancer
- Changes in oncology care during the Covid pandemic.
Dr. Baumann graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University and received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School where he also completed his residency, chief residency and fellowship in radiation oncology. He previously served as Chief of Radiation Oncology at the Walter Reed Medical Center, Washington, D.C., where he was the Associate Program Director of the National Cancer Institutes’ resident training program for radiation oncology and served as a member of the radiotherapy committee of the Gynecologic Oncology Group as well as the Radiological Advisory Medical Team of the U.S. Department of Defense. Dr. Baumann was named as the Consultant to the Surgeon General for radiation oncology and also served as the President of the Medical Staff at the University Medical Center at Princeton. He has lectured internationally, published multiple articles in the medical literature, and has received numerous honors including being selected by his peers for many years as one of the “Best Doctors” in the New York/New Jersey region.
Dr. Desai received his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel-Deaconnes Medical Center, Boston. He completed his fellowship in hematology & medical oncology at the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor. He holds leadership positions in the Middlesex County Medical Society and at Saint Peter's University Hospital and is board-certified in hematology and medical oncology.
Dr. Vaidya was born in Zambia (Africa) and moved to New Jersey with his family when he was 6 years old. After obtaining his Bachelors Degree at Rutgers University and Medical Degree at New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ), he moved to Providence, RI for his residency training in Dermatology at Brown University. He eventually decided to settle down in New Jersey with his beautiful wife Sonia, who is an Optometrist. Specializing in adult and pediatric dermatology and surgery of the skin, Dr. Vaidya treats patients from infants to the elderly. He performs cosmetic dermatological procedures including skin rejuvenation, microneedling, lasers, Botox, and fillers. Dr. Vaidya believes in providing high quality care for all his patients and does so with compassion and sensitivity
