Joshua can be a difficult text to reconcile in modern times. Without recognizing the historical and literary context of this text, we can assume that the violence and war of Joshua was genocide or ethnically motivated.
We should be willing to ask these questions and dig deeper to find a better understanding of what is happening in this story and in the larger context of God's redemptive work in Creation.
Mariah, JP, and Stephen share their experiences as Black people in the American Church, and give advice to students on how to empathize and engage the problem of racism in our culture to work towards a more inclusive church that lives in step with the Gospel of Jesus.

We are made to walk in relationship with the Lord, but the distractions and pain of this world can make Him seem far away at times. We see darkness all around us and forget that the light of the world is right here with us.
Jesus came to dwell among us & show us the love and mercy of the one true God. From Christ's fullness, we can learn what it looks like to dwell with Christ and walk in His light even when all seems dark.
We rejoice because we are children of God through faith in Jesus. Through Jesus we can be reborn into a relationship with God the Father.
Living with the light inside of us will make us look different from a world that loves darkness. We shouldn't be surprised if hardship comes. John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ, was mocked and murdered for being a witness to the Light. Jesus himself was rejected by His own people and ultimately murdered. Yet, his death freed us from the penalty of sin and the bondage of death.
Jesus gives us hope in our heaviness, peace in our restlessness, joy in our pain, and light in the darkness. The fulfilling life that we have in Jesus is marked by the light, hope, peace and joy that can only come from Him.
Let our lives be forever changed by the light personified: Jesus.
We all long to live vibrant lives of joy, but we find ourselves trapped in darkness. We look for light in various places that bring momentary happiness, but nothing can truly satisfy us. We only find more darkness and confusion.
Into that darkness, Jesus came to bring true and lasting light. His light illuminates the beauty in life so that it can be fully experienced. Yet, light also exposes the broken things in our lives, and it can be tempting to run back into the darkness to hide. However, we can trust that Jesus loves us and invites us into the light so that he can heal our brokenness, defeat the sin that enslaves us, and help us grow into something glorious where the Spirit of God himself can come to live.
True life is found in the light of Jesus. Step out of the darkness an into his marvelous light.
Let's talk about Sex!
The biggest aspect of restricted sexuality is this intense fear that if we make one mistake, one false move, then the Lord will turn His back on us. So we live in this strict denial and shame of the way that God created us. We don’t want to acknowledge our sexuality because of a fear that once we do, the desire will be too strong and then we will be a disappointment to God. This fear is real, but it’s not true. It’s also rooted in a lie from Satan, one that makes us believe that our God is a dictator who won’t love us unless we live like tiny robots.
Thankfully that is not who God is.
Submission to His will for your sexuality means you have the freedom to give your sexuality to Him. He won’t force you. You freely submit yourself to Him out of faith and love, not fear, trusting that He has a better plan for you. You don’t live by restriction in order to avoid wrath, you live in submission in order to receive Him.
