In a world that is so obsessed with being thin, it feels like an endless upstream battle to eat without guilt and feel good about one's body. You're probably exhausted, I'm exhausted. I'm also tired of seeing my patients struggle and I'm exhausted hearing about doctors pushing ozempic/weight loss on my patients.

In this ep, I talk about how I feel about my industry, how hopeless it can feel sometimes, and why I'll be pausing this podcast for now.

For 7-8 years of my 20s my self-worth revolved around my body, food was my obsession. Now that I'm in my early 30s, my obsession has transferred over to career and financial success. Living in a big city (Silicon Valley), it feels like all that matters is your job title, career progression and financial status. It feels like diet culture, trying to be better, do more, like nothing is enough. If you want to follow me in this next chapter where I tackle this desire to success and not get left behind financially, then I invite you to...

What you'll find on my new Youtube channel:

Feeling left behind financially at 31 & how I built 3 streams of income (earnings, is it worth it?!)

Shame causes us to feel less than, different, not good enough. It causes us to feel one degree of separation from the person we think is better than us in some way (success, money, intelligence, appearance, etc.

"I am lesser than the other person or other people, and I am on the outside looking in." - Joanne Kim

Today I have on Joanne Kim, a therapist-turned Feelings Translator who helps Highly Sensitive Persons turn their BIGGEST feelings into their GREATEST superpower! The people who work with her are often the first (or only) person in their family or communities to intuitively process and express feelings; consequently, they are often judged or criticized so that they learn to people-please, placate, or perform until they hit a wall. When Joanne shares about her approach to working with feelings, the #1 response she gets is, "Why didn't they teach me this in school?!?" Grab the free guide "The BIG Feeler First Aid Kit" to learn how to navigate your feelings when they show up when you least expect (or want) them! www.IntelligentEmotions.com/FirstAidKit You can find Joanne on Instagram: www.instagram.com/intelligentemotions LINKS AND RESOURCES * Take the Quiz – Is Intuitive Eating Right for YOU?(after years of dieting and bingeing) * Request an Appointment – 1:1 private coaching with Elise * Let’s be friends on IG! @craving.food.freedom.com

"We live in a very cognitive society. We're cerebral, we talk, but there's still this approach of thought forward existence versus listening to what our bodies are actually saying."

-Romi

Today I have the pleasure of welcoming Romi Cumes, an incredible Somatic therapist based out in Santa Barbara.

Somatic psychology - what is it you may ask. It is understanding how the body works and what is happening underneath the psyche that's actually leading to that.

Some of us can have some rigidity and then it manifests in other areas of the body too - tense shoulders for example. With anger, we can start to feel it in the trapezius and in the shoulders, which is really where a lot gets stored. So that's something to notice. How many of you are listening to what your body is saying to you?

Romi helps individuals get in touch with the lived experience of the body in order to identify, explore, and ultimately transform stuck patterns and energy so they become more capable of living happy, balanced lives.

Romi draws from over twenty years of healing arts experience and spiritual studies. She utilizes various techniques that include mindfulness and sensation-focused awareness. By focusing on body awareness, it helps to ground ourselves during moments of tension and reactivity, regulate the nervous system, and to learn from and heal long-held pain and body armor.

Are you an immigrant or child of immigrants? If you've ever thought "I deserve to be stuck, I’m not allowed to be who I am, I hate my body", this is the episode for you.

Today I have on Anny who offers therapy to those who have struggled during their childhoods finally find peace and fulfillment in their adulthoods, with a focus on immigrants and children of immigrants. She is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and online throughout California and her works helps to:

  • Transform one's relationship to internalized shame, rejection, and criticism
  • Better understand the different parts of yourself

Personal note: the turning point in my relationship with food was when I first started to see a therapist and uncovered the layers of emotions buried deep around my family, and growing up as an immigrant.

"Befriend the part of you that hates your body"

-Anny

Sometimes we want to throw away certain parts of ourselves, we let certain parts go into hiding, but in order to feel at peace with ourselves, it's time to embrace all of the parts within us. So that you don't feel like running away from yourself and going towards food.

Why would mother nature make it easy for us to lose weight, so that we can just wither away??...

Elise In this ep, we talk:

  • what the body loves more than homeostasis is having more fat cells for survival so it's natural for us to gain weight as we age
  • your metabolism can go into sleep mode when on a diet
  • anti-weight loss mechanisms kick in as a protective mechanism
  • it’s not your fault that you’ve gained weight, weight is something much more out of our control that we think

Another diet is not the answer. What actually works based on my experience working with clients.

  • Is what you're doing enjoyable?
  • Is what you’re doing easy?
  • additive mindset vs restrictive mindset

But what if your doctor is telling you to lose weight... No one should be able to tell you what to do. You get to trust yourself. You know how to take care of yourself and your body. And if you don’t know how to do so in the best way possible, there are therapists and dietitians that can help.

"He's literally trapped himself in his body. At one point he disregarded that he had a body. He no longer cared. He didn't feel like he deserved any better".

In today's episode, I share my thoughts on this gut wrenching movie and what it means for all of us.

  • how low self-esteem causes us to self sabotage
  • the negative spiral of disappointing yourself over and over again
  • what do you feel you deserve
  • why someone may be burying themselves alive with food/binge eating
  • how grief, remorse, regret, low self esteem, self hatred can cause us to binge
  • why someone may not be able to stop eating
  • how much do youu value yourself and your own happiness/health
  • how many patients of mine are like Charlie
  • how guilt/shame causes binges
  • how judgement of others, feeling disgusting causes more self sabotage
  • can we really be healthy at ANY size

In his last days, the main character Charlie wanted to do things differently, change his beliefs, and make things right.

It's always possible to believe new things, build up our own self esteem by doing the things that matter, and in turn feel more deserving of good tthings. We have a whole life ahead of us. Imagine spending the majority of our days believing that we're good people, that we can do good for the world, that we can say true to our words, that we deserve more. Had Charlie done that earlier, he probably would have felt better about himself and perhaps gotten the support that he needed.

Take the quiz - Is Intuitive Eating Right for YOU? One last diet? Or is it time to try something radically different?

Why you’re here - perhaps years of dieting hasn’t worked and you're tired of having seasons of being on the bandwagon/disciplined and then seasons of going off the rails.

Today's ep:

  • What is Intuitive Eating --> TLDR venn diagram between LOGIC x EMOTIONS x PHYSICAL CUES
  • We can't be 100% logical everyday forever because WE ARE NOT ROBOTS
  • Do you trust your hunger/fullness
  • Fear of losing control
  • Is food your answer to every emotion? What do you really need?
  • What beliefs do you hold about your body, where do they come from?

Remember, the most beautiful and appreciated among us are those who dared to be different and remain true to themselves. They pushed forward until the world recognized what they had to offer.

If you’re ready to release the brainspace that dieting has controlled for so long, I encourage you to stay tuned and join along.

These are the nuances that get missed: 1. Developing interoceptive awareness: Interoceptive signals include your signal to go pee or the murmurs of your heartbeat. Hunger and fullness are also interoceptive signals. Are you listening to these signals closely? 2. Developing more trust around food and getting rid of diet culture. Once you are able to distance yourself from the noise, it allows you space to listen to your own internal signals. That is your true north! 3. Cultivating more body acceptance. We think that our bodies are 99% controllable however based on long term weight loss studies and the set point theory, weight is not as much in your control as you think. 4. Coping with emotions without food. There’s so much work to be done to detangle emotions (anxiety, stress, sadness) from food. How can you meet your needs without food?

Marketing is spot on! They do such a good job of emphasizing the psychology of eating. People love the coaching/reflection questions that are part of the app. HOWEVER...

Food is categorized as red/orange/green The colors are based on calorie density however it does not always correlate with the nutrient density of food!

Overall Takeaway Pros: Noom could potentially cultivate mindfulness

Cons: Noom's colors could potentially warp one's perception of food and implies good/bad amongst foods.

Cheat days vs bingeing? The line is blurry however it likely feels bad coming out of either. We’ve all been there. If you’re feeling especially awful, below are some tips to stop the cycle.

Tip 1: Get ahead of the curve Are you excited about your weekday meals or are they all the same and bland-tasting? You may be building excitement for all the foods you can eat on the weekends. It’s a lot of pent-up excitement.

Idea: Sprinkle in more excitement during the week i.e. try an exciting recipe or takeout in the middle of the week.

Tip 2: Evaluate your cheat/binge foods Zoom in on the experience of eating those foods.

Can you notice the moment of diminishing returns? After repeatedly noticing those moments, can you eventually take action?

Tip 3: Try to not beat yourself up for it too much You don’t have to start fresh, you don’t have to punish yourself with oatmeal and salads everyday for the next week (if you don’t like those foods). Continue to find joy and excitements in the foods that you’re eating. Otherwise, you’ll just continue to the cycle of pent-up excitement on the weekends.

People who think they are addicted usually take the approach of complete abstinence. It creates a victim mindset. However life is not worth living with sugar so how can we approach it with more ease. Set yourself up for success 1. Eat balanced meals. Don’t make room for dessert. By eating enough at meals, it ensures more balanced blood sugar, thereby less cravings. 2. Notice how sweets make you feel physically. 3. Is the next bite just as enjoyable as the previous?

For 10,000 years, humans have eaten bread. So why is it now that so many people are sensitive to gluten? I have a few hunches and it has to do with modern wheat and industrialized production. Plus I share a few tangible tips on how to approach gluten moving forward WITHOUT complete restriction. What’s in this episode? * History of bread * Ancient wheat vs modern wheat (in the 1960s, wheat was genetically modified to be higher in gluten and more weather-resistant) * Bread production is vastly different in modern day (in the early 1900s, with the advent of fast-acting yeast, we have taken a shortcut and left out the long fermentation process) * History of Celiac disease * How to approach bread if you think you’re sensitive (give your gut time to heal, try ancient grains, have traditionally fermented bread) * Gut test to see if you’re sensitive to wheat - Wheat Zoomer
