These lessons took me THOUSANDS of $$$s in investments and YEARS to learn, and eventually led me to embrace entrepreneurship:
It was 2017. I had been doing meaningful, impactful work I am super passionate about as an immigrants' rights lawyer and advocate. But something big was missing.
🔥 I felt a growing frustration starting to rage more and more inside.
🔥 I KNEW I could be doing more to help people, in ways out of the box of the current legal system — leveraging technology and new tools. 💜
🔥I WANTED to be able to express my creativity more. I wanted to get messy, innovate, and develop new solutions to some of the biggest problems.🎨
💡If only someone had walked me through these 3 lessons at the time:
1. Often, your body knows exactly what to do next, even if your mind doesn’t. Listen to what it’s telling you.
My body knew it was time to create my next dream project, which eventually became me and my husband's online business. Something was ready to get birthed inside.
As heart-centered advocates and entrepreneurs, we don’t create from our heads. Our hearts, souls, and bodies are where our greatest work comes from.
2. Pay attention to what you’re feeling most curious about. Your interests often point the way you are destined to go next.
There was a reason I kept finding myself listening to podcasts on online business & entrepreneurship. Business itself didn’t resonate with me as a mission-driven advocate. But my interests led me to the right innovative online tools needed to build my own path.
3. Frustration isn’t a bad thing. It’s a sign your energy is moving and you’re being pushed to grow into your next level.

What changed my relationship with money forever…
I had always conflated abundance with gluttony, thinking abundance meant having SO much that it was at the harm and expense of others. 😔
I definitely didn't want that. As a mission, impact-oriented advocate and social entrepreneur, I had zero interest in going in that direction.
But like many advocates and heart-centered entrepreneurs, this left me trapped at the other end of the spectrum: constantly struggling with money and living in scarcity. I thought this was the only option to live in alignment with my values. 🤦🏽♀️
Then I finally realized abundance is actually the MIDDLE point between scarcity and gluttony.💡
Abundance is about having just enough that you’re super comfortable. 🌊
This is the ideal state to be in to be able to turn the focus inward from just focusing on yourself to outward so you can truly serve others and expand your impact. 💜
More of the world’s future leaders need to understand the true meaning of abundance, as well as the strategies how to tap into it in their daily lives.
The world’s future desperately depends on it.

Choosing between meaning and money is a trap.

You can only give back once you make a lot of money.
Or rather:
That if you focus on money, you are greedy, selfish, and not prioritizing serving others.
But having to pick meaning OR money is a FALSE CHOICE.
I know because I've experienced this inner dilemma in my own journey.

When your cup is empty, it's impossible to keep filling the cup for others.
But how can we fill our own cup when we have sooo many responsibilities to take care of others, from aging parents to young children to siblings to colleagues and clients who depend on us?
It's about learning to prioritize yourself first.
I know, when I first heard this concept, I thought, but "that's so selfish!"
A recovering people pleaser, it felt really uncomfortable to even prioritize myself at all. Nevermind put myself first.
Here’s the thing.
If you don't fill your cup first, you won't be able to keep filling the cup for others. At some point, you'll run out. There will be nothing left to give.
Read that again.
But when you understand how taking time to fill your own cup allows you to actually be in a position to serve others more, you’ll know how to turn things back around quickly the next time you're feeling depleted and burnt out from constantly giving and giving.

Unfortunately, many of us have been taught that focusing on our own needs is selfish, in conflict with our values, and greedy.
This is definitely something I've struggled with over the years having worked in the public interest/social justice space for about 15 years.
Here’s the thing. Even if you are able to do meaningful work serving others while struggling with finances yourself, your capacity to make the impact you could be making is more limited than it needs to be.

“I can’t start a business because…_______”

What's causing that?
Whether it's low self worth, fear of failure, imposter syndrome, lack of confidence in your ability to make it happen, playing small with your greatness, or one of the million other thing, there are so many mindset hurdles that get in the way of our dreams and goals.
The thing is, these doubts and fears are completely part of the entrepreneurial process. It is normal and expected to feel them.
It's actually a good sign that you're moving out of your comfort zone and growing.
(I wish someone had explained this to us straight up when we started our business back in 2018!)
Here’s the thing. When you understand it's actually normal to have these limiting beliefs when starting a business, or even when just thinking about it, you can start to take your power back and take action anyway.

In the past few days, 3 U.S. banks collapsed, including Silicon Valley Bank and two banks deeply embedded in the cryptocurrency industry, causing the largest bank failure since the 2008 financial crisis, the second-biggest bank crash in U.S. history, and widespread fear about the state of the economy.

The word "profit" can feel a bit triggering, bringing up negative narratives about the evil harms of capitalism, industrialization, and the patriarchy.
In our own lives, we can feel guilt and shame for wanting "more" - or essentially, profit - more money, more time, more boundaries, more freedom, etc...
Even if we are broke, living paycheck to paycheck, not getting paid what we deserve, not charging for our work, or undercharging.
We can also feel resentment toward those who are making surplus, and assume they must be "bad."
What causes that?
Fundamentally, it's a misunderstanding of what profit and abundance truly mean.
This is something I've struggled with myself for years.
Here's the thing. Believing profit is a bad thing only keeps you in survival mode.
But when you understand why the concept of profit is so misunderstood, you’ll know how to shift perspectives quickly the next time you feel guilty for wanting more.

Many people in our community are concerned about how their parents are not investing and have no retirement plan. What makes this even more frustrating is not know whether as an immigrant their parents are even allowed to invest.
When your parents have no retirement plan, you know you and/or your siblings likely will be the one who have to bear the consequences. Hector currently is a DACA recipient and currently uses this new privilege as an Adjunct Professor in Engineering at Sacramento City College hoping to inspire other undocumented students, and students of color, to pursue Engineering in higher education.
Andrea Gaytan possesses over twenty years of teaching, student advising and advocacy experience working with underrepresented and under-served student populations. She has taught in Japan, Mexico, and within several regions in the U.S. working primarily with Spanish-speaking, recently arrived immigrant communities. Andrea currently serves as a Dean of a community college outreach center where she maintains a holistic, student-centered approach to higher education administration, which includes prioritizing students basic needs, as well as supporting their academic and career development.
Derick Romero is a co-founder of Immpower.org. He was born in Oaxaca, Mexico and migrated to the U.S at the age of 3 years old with his family due to scarce resources. He's a first generation college student that identifies as a DACAmented.
Derick developed a deep passion to help and empower the undocumented/immigrant community by advocating and educating others on invaluable resources to succeed in higher education. Even with all the barriers put in front of him due to his DACAmented status, he successfully transferred from Modesto Jr. College to UC Davis for his B.A. and has attained an MBA from UC Riverside. Derick is currently an Operations Area Manager for Amazon.com.

Edward Junhao Lim, an Immigrant Finance School alumni and Business & Entrepreneurship Librarian who immigrated to the United States from Singapore one year ago, shares a bit of his story and how he became a librarian focused on entrepreneurship. Nidia, Nadia, and Nayeli Merino are three sisters and a first-generation Mexican immigrant family who immigrated to the United States in 1991.

Maribel Francisco is a first generation child of immigrants born in California. Her parents are from Meseta Purecheta in Michoacán, México, from a community that has its own dialect, food, and culture.
She tells us a little bit of her story and family's immigration and financial struggles; when she got sick in preschool and her mom quit her job to be with her and take care of her and how shortly after her dad was deported.
Maribel shares with us how she and her mom overcame these challenges. She graduated from college, and her mom now has her own income tax firm.

Luzy started working at the age of 16 as a housekeeper, sometimes she worked 14 hours a day.

The Power and Choices Financial Planning Gives You During Family Emergencies.
In this episode, Adina talks about the options and choices you can have during family emergencies when you have a financial plan.
Early in their financial journey, her and her husband Mauricio had to miss out on important family moments good and bad because they could not afford to buy flights to Ecuador.
Fast forward 8 years later, when a family emergency just came up money did not have to get in the way. There was no question about what to do. This is the power a financial plan can you give you and why building wealth is about doing what's best for your family.
It was only an option for Adina and Mau to bring Mau’s parents here from Ecuador to get vaccinated because of their financial planning.
This was a choice they would not have had 8 years ago when they lived paycheck to paycheck with no emergency savings.
Building financial stability allows you to have choices during emergencies so you don’t have to choose between money and your family. So that you have a choice in the first place.

DACA holders, also known as "Dreamers", are people who are undocumented and have a form of temporary deferral of deportation. DACA does not provide citizenship, a green card, or any permanent immigration status. DACA holders are people who have been brought to the U.S. as children, have lived in the U.S. for many years, and meet certain educational and other strict requirements. Developed by the Obama Administration, the DACA program provides people with a work permit, which must be renewed periodically, as well as a social security number. As Jen describes, access to a work permit and social security number can be life-changing in terms of having access to financial opportunities including college and job opportunities. DACA holders face unique financial burdens. There are high fees associated with DACA applications and renewal applications that DACA recipients must save for, adding a financial burden on top of the high costs of immigration lawyer fees and the costs with putting the application together. Jen is a DACA recipient navigating finances as an undocumented person. She aims to build generational wealth despite her immigration status, showcasing her journey and sharing the stories of others. You need to know the pros and cons of how to navigate different financial products to build wealth for you and your family. Your money sitting in a bank account is not a real plan to build wealth. It DOES make sense for your emergency fund, but not much else. You will miss out on an opportunity of building real wealth.
Investing is an important tool for immigrants to learn about to build wealth. Although some investments can be risky if they try to beat the market, investing with a smart, reasonable, and long-term strategy can produce wealth that an immigrant family otherwise might not have been able to obtain. Many immigrants come to the U.S. for economic opportunity with only a little bit of money and the hope and dreams of working hard for a better life. By saving money alone, an immigrant is not as likely to build wealth than if he or she invests that money to grow with time. When investing is done in a responsible manner, saving money cannot compete.
Smart, long-term investing can help an immigrant family to go from poverty and struggling financially to potentially a comfortable, middle class lifestyle building generational wealth.

We stand in solidarity with the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community during these difficult times. The many escalating violent attacks against the AAPI community are one of the many manifestations of the white supremacist culture and systemic racism in this country.
As described by Whitney Parnel of Service Never Sleeps, scarcity mindset - the idea that there are scarce resources, not enough for everyone, and that resources have to be taken away from others to have enough - is the source of racism.
It's also the same mindset that blocks us from thriving and building wealth. Believing there are not enough resources for us is the source of many money mindset challenges.
But scarcity mindset is a myth. There are enough resource for everyone. The natural state of the world and each of us comes from a place of abundance.
All human lives deserve to thrive, be free, and be valued equally. There is enough for everyone in our shared humanity. Everyone should be able to live their best lives and reach their fullest potential. That is justice.

For us, the tree symbol means so much to what represents the Immigrant Finance™ community - growth, stability, balance, and aspirations. Our new logo symbolizes the work we are all doing to grow roots as well as a family legacy in our shared goals to build wealth. The branches reflect endless potential to abundantly thrive.
Thank each of you who have supported the growth of this amazing community, empowered yourselves and others to learn about building wealth, and inspired us so much. This design is a reflection of the hope you have given us and others.
As described in the episode, the logo design process was such a reflective and powerful experience to go through in terms of learning more about ourselves, our business, and our intuition.
When we realized we wanted to have a tree in the logo, a few people we consulted with thought no one would “get” the tree symbolism, and we second guessed ourselves (well Adina did - Mau not so much, he is less influenced by others haha and the tree made total sense to him as an immigrant from Ecuador wanting to build roots and grow here in the U.S. :)).
Then, we realized the couple initial people we had asked, though close family and friends whose opinion we trust, were not immigrants or family members of immigrants. They were allies but not actual members of our audience and community.
We then asked several of our very best friends who are. Layla, a child of Lebanese immigrants, was immediately like “OF COURSE the tree makes sense!!!" Fernando, a Mexican immigrant, was like “Yes. This feels right.” Amy, a child of Taiwanese immigrants, had the idea to add a simple single dollar sign in one of the leaves to make the connection between the tree and our focus on finances and building wealth.
This experience was a reminder of why it’s so important to listen to your instinct, and to talk to your actual audience to inform business decisions, two of the most important lessons as a business owner.
A lot of the business journey is learning to distinguish between instinct and thoughts that are more second-guessing yourself. As one of our business mentors has taught us, one way to tell is how the thoughts are coming up. If there's a calmness and steadiness to the thought, it's intuition. If it's mental chatter, it's likely noise.
We realize also that being a business owner is about learning to own your power and your decisions, not letting fear of judgment and people pleasing tendencies get in the way. While letting your audience guide you.
We were so fortunate to get to work through all of this with such a professional to guide us through how this all plays out through design. Thank you to May for her patience, flexibility, and creativity throughout the emotional up and downs and business and personal self-reflection that comes with logo design!

It can often be a limiting belief that we are afraid to make more money because we think people who have money are bad. How much money someone has is separate from whether they are a good or bad person. People are people, and there are good and bad people out there in the world. Whether someone is good is based on that individual person's integrity, values, and ethics, not how much money they have. Money is just an amplifier - it allows good people to spread more good in the world, and bad people more bad.

In this episode we sit down with Alejandra and Raylene of Latinas Talk Dinero to discuss their families' immigration stories and building an online business and presence as the children and descendants of immigrants.
Alejandra Magaña Gamero is a doctoral student in the Graduate School of Education at UCLA. Her dissertation examines the experiences of Chicanas in graduate programs, particularly how they negotiate their educational and cultural identities. She received her Bachelors from Santa Clara University in Psychology and Ethnic Studies and her Masters in Education from UCLA. Alejandra is also a financial wellness consultant at UCLA and is the co-founder of Latinas Talk Dinero (@latinastalkdinero), a financial literacy platform dedicated to providing quality finance education for individuals to transform their relationship with money and take control of their finances.
Raylene Hernandez is a Health Information Specialist at Seneca Family of Agencies that provides unconditional care and mental health services to at risk youth and families. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Public Health and Women’s & Gender Studies from Santa Clara University and plans to continue her education in the field of social work. Raylene is the co-founder of Latinas Talk Dinero, a financial literacy platform dedicated to providing quality finance education for individuals to transform their relationship with money and take control of their finances. Latinas Talk Dinero seeks to foster a welcoming space where folks learn and grow together via honest conversations that are free of judgment and culturally relevant. She is actively involved in the Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley and her passions lie in specifically looking at the intersections between financial stability and domestic violence.
