This is a revival of a piece from 2021 commissioned by SOAR running.

There’s cross-country. And then there are the cross-country relays.

From here on, referred to as Mansfield.

Listen to the podcast using headphones for the best audio experience and check out the extensive gallery to follow the story of how the National Cross-Country Relays, held in Mansfield since 1989, has become so adored by athletes from across the nation.

For many in the sport of running, the draw of cross-country is sometimes hard to comprehend, but for others, there’s nothing more exhilarating—especially when run as part of a relay.

An event like Mansfield, where it’s not so much athlete against athlete but club against club, presents clear wins for the argument of sport being a unifier. For being a force for good. For engaging communities.

At Mansfield, you have a high-octane day of racing where community and competition mix seamlessly. A year, ten years or even a lifetime after racing here, runners still recall the twists and turns of the course, the panoply of club tents erected by the pond, and their duct-taped shoes ready to race. Mansfield is one of only a few events in the calendar where first timers, elites, young athletes and veterans unite to run XC for the greater good: their club.

They say endurance running is all about commitment and nowhere have we seen it play out to such an extent as here in Berry Hill Park.

Mansfield, we applaud you.

Audio: Danny Easton

Photos: Phil Gale and Emmie Collinge, a former Mansfield Harrier with a lifetime allegiance to the club. Famously first back on leg one as an U15 in 2002.

On todays episode we head to Nepal…well we give Nepal a call rather to chat with Bikram Pandey, the founder of the Everest Marathon. Billed as the Highest and Toughest marathon, it starts at Everest base camp at approximately 5401m above sea level before descending through the Sherpa trails of the Khumbu Valley.

In recognition of the first successful ascent of the highest peak in the world by the duo of Late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary on 29 May 1953, this event was officially named the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon.

Recorded earlier this year I chatted with Bikram to learn how the event came to be, how he prepares the participants, how the locals train for the race and how connecting with the natural beauty and wonder of Nepal enriches all that take part..

As the US champs play out this weekend, athletes from across America will roll the dice. For a chance to make the American team at the world champs or maybe even make a name for themselves. For many high-achieving amateur athletes this is an opportunity not to miss but sometimes help and support goes a long way to get to the line.  Tracksmith’s amateur support program aims to help athletes pursue their track and field dreams acting as a stepping stone from the amateur elite into the pro ranks. Helping with travel, accommodation, kit and more to remove some of the financial obstacles when it comes to competing. This week we caught up with two recipients on the eve of their first-round race.  First up was Alexina Teubel, a steeplechaser who has been having great success dropping down to the 15, with a PB of 4.05. Alexina finished up 13th in her race with a 4.13.37. and sadly won’t move through to the final, but i’ve no doubt she will continue to impress and pursue her craft.  Next up we checked in with a member of the Very Nice Track Club, Nate Mylenek. Nate was getting ready for the steeple with a PB of 8.28 and a lot of exciting potential.   Sadly Nate didn’t quite have the legs, partly due to feeling run down from getting sick the week before but team chaos will continue to push for sure! And that's what strikes me about this particular level of competition and for the large cohort of high-achieving amateur athletes that makes up a large proportion of our sport, they have to be allowed the opportunity to compete, take risks and try their potential for the sport to flourish. So props to Tracksmith and other initiatives brands are doing to help give them the support to do so.  Im looking forward to watching the rest of the action play out at Hayward Field this weekend and all the action at the British champs!  Watch the USATAF champs Watch the British Champs Subscribe to the Substack via the link in our bio Podcast Photo by @brendanpdavis

On today's episode, I sit down with Will Pegna a multidisciplinary artist based in London, UK. Drawing from over a decade and a half of experience as a competitive dancer and connective artist, Pegna works between art and fashion, exploring the deployment of movement design to communicate ideas.  His most recent work is ATT. All Terrain Training is an ongoing performance series exploring athleticism as an expanded tool to create new connected narratives.  Investigating art and sport, ATT offers a new perspective on athletic identity, performance processes and the potential of training as an art form. With a core company, brand & artist collaboration and movement workshops; building the hybrid world of All Terrain Training evolves through people and places. Ultimately offering a space to connect to each other and our environment. Premiered in 2020, ATT took the form as a live exhibition; presenting a performance that allowed audiences to plug into a deeply concentrated, non-competitive, physical simulation. Viewers shared the space with 7-9 dancers tasked with maintaining engaged contact for 2-3 hours. A shift-taking movement exercise that created a suspended tension, inspired by and accompanied by collected sounds of Arctic glaciers and tectonic tremors. On today's episode, we take a peek under the hood at SOAR Runnings, proto lab. This is their R and D product incubator born from a desire to experiment and push boundaries… In the days leading up to the London Marathon, SOAR has opened its doors for last-minute check in’s with physios, a chance to browse the collection and have some damn fine coffee.  They’d also put out the call to join the proto-lab tester team. Two runners were required to put a brand new product to the test- the marathon speed suit. A one-piece aero suit designed specifically to meet the functional requirements of marathon racers.  I was there to witness the handover, chat with the two testers and get an insight into how the brand is constantly pushing the envelope when it comes to innovation.  Thanks to the team at SOAR for allowing us to come and observe and to Karl and James for being part of the podcast. Welcome back to The Big Run As the OTN series continues on TBR, we move to Paris for the FAST5000 Taking place on Saturday the 10th of June, It’s quickly become one of the highlights of the French athletics calendar and with good reason, last year 68% got a PB and 96%  seasons best. The 2023 edition is looking even more stacked, with mile, 1500m and 3k races in amongst the 5000m action. At the start of the event, there will be a special relay event 5 x 1k (5000m in total 😉) to see who is the fastest French crew. Some of the crews in this podcast will be taking part. So I headed to Paris on the eve of the Paris marathon to chat with Jolie Foulée / Distance, PWRUP and Veins M'Attraper before returning a few weeks later to join Zoom Volt Runners at an evening training session at the track. I wanted to find out their stories, the French perspective on running and why running as a group will always trump running on your own. The crew relay kicks off the event at the FAST5000 and promises to be really exciting. This summer… get ready to meet a different kind of track meet.

Where the world's fastest athletes meet a festival atmosphere.

The big run is proud to be partnering with On to bring you a series of preview podcasts around their global track night series.

This week we'll be building the excitement for Track Fest with episodes dropping each morning with key figures on and off the track.

On today's episode, we sit down with the North American indoor record holder for the 1500m mile and 3k. Records he secured at the start of this year in a relatively short amount of time. You could say he had the perfect indoor season so we’re excited to see what he can do when he toes the line for the 800m tomorrow at the track fest.

In this conversation his hopes for his turtle's outdoor season, his expectations for the 800m and why the OTN series will be serving up something very different for athletic fans.

A big thank you to Yared for coming on the show and to you all for tuning in this week.

There’s nothing left but for the athletes to warm up, spike up and get ready to dance as Im sure the audience will be when Kyle takes to the stage.

So, if you are in LA you know where to head tomorrow and for those that can’t make it head over to Sound Running for all the information you need to get the PPV, a large share of which contributes to the athlete prize purse. I myself will be staying up late or getting up early rather to watch all the action unfold.

We’ll be back with a preview build for London’s Night of 10,000m including a special episode recorded live at the event at Highgate. It’s going to be something special.

Here's what to expect at Track Fest:

Part music festival, part track meet, LA's Track Fest is unmissable for running fans (and fans of a good time).

It's a World Athletics Silver level meet organized in collaboration with Sound Running with 800m, 1500m, steeplechase, 5000m and 10,000m events. There will also be a community event where you can watch LA's local run clubs compete for the title in a 4x1 mile relay on the legendary Mt. Sac course. Grab a drink and cheer them on alongside ultrarunner extraordinaire (and master of ceremonies), Mikey Mitchell.

The track will be lit up with pyrotechnics, and surrounded by food trucks and beer tents. Oh yeah, and your food is covered with your ticket. And as if all that wasn't enough, to top it off, we'll have a performance from US rapper Kyle

To buy tickets and learn more about how to stream the event via PPV head over to Sound Running

The Full line up of events are:

Track Fest - 6th May - LA

Night of the 10,000m PB's - 20th May - London

FAST5000 - 10th June - Paris

Track Night Vienna - 17th June - Vienna

Hello and welcome back to the big run.

Today's guest is Robbie Balenger. A man not adverse to extreme challenges, his list of multi-stage ultra efforts reads long.

There are iconic races and unusual challenges such as loops around central park and outlasting a Tesla.

Most recently a solo Speed Project effort saw him come in second in that iconic event.

Still, he’s kept the momentum up and switched to crewing for another epic challenge to support Will Goodge as runs across America. An experience he is well versed in having done the challenge himself back in 2019.

Robbie caught up with us a few days ago in the early stages of the effort in Barstow California doing Laundry for the crew - oh the glamour...

You can follow Robbie @robbiebalenger

Find out more about his adventures at https://www.robbiebalenger.com/

And keep up to date with Will's challenge @williamgoodge where you can follow along, donate and support.

Hello and welcome back the mid-week entry to TBR.Firstly some house keeping… elevator musicIf you are enjoying TBR please do leave us a review on apple or Spotify, it helps the show, plus give our Instagram a follow, where our DMS are open for feedback, collaboration and ideas. Ok, that's enough of that….In today's episode…we don’t actually talk about running…but runners dont talk about running all the time…well sometimes we do…but sometimes we want to be inspired, hear new stories and perspectives and get switched on to an individual, company or worthwhile endeavours that we might not have heard of.So with that in mind, today id like to share the story of the 'Early Majority'. They are an outdoor apparel brand, that wants to adopt a degrowth business model where the clothes are only part of the story and the community is at the forefront of how it intends to grow. What is degrowth? well in a nutshell - we need to make less stuff. That's why Early Majority have crafted a select set of outdoor apparel garments and accessories that they dub “tools for leaning out”.It's a super exciting proposition that comes from the mind of founder and CEO Joy Howard who is joining me today.Joy has had a fascinating trajectory to get to where she is. From a Seattle grunge band to an MBA, to Coca Cola, Converse, Patagonia to taking the plunge and bringing her own company to fruition. It’s a fascinating story with a lot to take from. So if you’ve ever debated a career change, whilst running, pondered how fashion can do it’s bit to help the environment whilst on the long run, or just like a fascinating person on a podcast then today's ep is for you!Podcast cover photo's by Paris Howard and Product shots by Magdalena Wosinska--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thebigrunpodcast/message

Welcome back to the big run. Since the Valencia marathon, I’ve been struggling with my running. a niggle has been hanging around in some shape or form. it derailed my race. The weeks after haven’t been the best, I've ignored and tried to run through it. Made it worse….textbook.Its’ topic is a familiar one for many of us - running injuries. Whether it's a nagging pain in your knee, a twinge in your ankle or a strain in your back, we've all been there. But fear not, because we're here to talk about the next step in your injury recovery journey - visiting the physio! That's right, it's time to put on your bravest face and head to the land of heat packs and ultrasound machines. Buckle up, because this might be a bumpy ride, but the end result is worth it promise! So, one windy and wet morning I headed to the Victoria Park Harriers clubhouse in Victoria park to see Matt who was in London for clinic sessions.Matt is a 5000m and 10000m athlete who has competed for Ireland both on the roads and the track. he was English Schools 3000M champ and had a scholarship to complete a Master of Science degree at the university of new Mexico in the united states. He co-founded the performance team alongside Mark Buckingham and works closely with several past, present, and future Olympians and Paralympians, with Athletics Ireland, the Royal Dutch Athletics Federation, and a professional track team overseas. However, most of Matt's work is done supporting recreational runners, club-level athletes, and newcomers to the sport looking to stay injury-free, keep fit and remain healthy. He’s worked with Wiggle and Hoka as well as organising running camps in Kenya. This episode was recorded live during the session and offers insight into how physiotherapists assess, diagnose and treat running related injuries. Hello and welcome to this special mid-week episode of TBRThe valencia marathon was just over a week ago and saw a string of incredible times on the super flat and fast course. Myself and Kieran Alger have been on a mission to find out if running without a watch… ditching pacing bands and pacing plans to race entirely on feel might be the best way to bag yourself a new PB. We guinea-pigged ourselves and embraced the concept of racing entirely on feel, covered our watches and ran free from the pressure of data, no splits, no heart rate, no clocks, and definitely no running power readouts.   We also spoke to elite coach Nick Anderson from runningwithus.com and running anthropologist and author of Out of Thin Air, Dr Michael Crawley, to dive deeper into the science, the pros and cons of running on feel. Be sure to check out Kieran's brilliant YouTube video over on his channel for his take on the experiment, this podcast tells that story and features extended interviews with our two experts for deeper dives into the science, physiology and anthropological ideas surrounding our relationship with running and data. If you're looking for coaching and help with your running check out runningwithus.com.  And pick up a copy of Dr Michael Crawley's excellent read Out of Thin Air: https://amzn.eu/d/bIj6Wk0 and a big thank you to Run Through for our race places on the day.

Hello and welcome back... Today's guest is Matt Stonier.  An up-and-coming star in middle-distance running. He shocked the field at the Nike Elmsley Carr Mile by taking the win, the following week he was toeing the line at a diamond league meet and headed to Birmingham for the 1500m where he posted a PB of 3.32 an incredible season closed out with him inking a deal with Nike. And he's only just getting started... Big thank you to Matt for coming on the show.  Today's episode also features a rapid review of the New Balance SC Elite V3.  The review gets to the heart of the shoe in less time than it took Matt to run his 1500m. Let me know what you think of the new feature by getting in touch. The shoe retails at £220 pounds (I said 222 in the review for some reason), has 4mm drop and comes to around 250g in a men's UK Size 10 and is available now @sportsshoes  Photo of Matt post 5th Ave mile by @jkh_photo

Hello and welcome back to TBR. Today's guest is Jack Kuenzle.  The 27-year-old former Navy SEAL may be one of the most gifted runners on the planet. Who, back in September took nearly 30 minutes of Killian Jornet's record for the Bob Graham round. One of the most historic and epic fell routes in the world of mountain running.  He has been taking chunks out of dozens of FKTs in the UK and the USA after spending time in the military as a member of the U.S Navy SEALS.  In this conversation, we talk about his journey to the mountains, his training, how heat is the poor man's altitude, why van life isn't all it's cracked up to be, and why Jack writes the funniest race reports.  This was a fantastic conversation! Thanks to Jack for taking the time.  Follow him @ Photo by @steveashworthmedia

Get the brews on…and join me as I catch up with Rose Harvey, the first Brit home at the London Marathon with a world champs qualifying time of 2:27:59.  It’s been a busy year for Rose with three marathon build-ups and lots of obstacles, but she continues to impress having come to the sport relatively late after the pandemic gave her a chance to focus on her running.  We met at the Regency Cafe in London’s Westminster not far from the final mile of the marathon to reflect on that race, her running journey and why she’s enjoying a well-earned break. Along for the ride was Curated for Runners Arran McCaskill documenting the afternoon, check out his images and all the brilliant work Arran, Jerry and Hafi do over on Curated for Runners.

Hello and welcome back to TBR, last week the London marathon took to over the capital and many people watching im sure have felt inspired to start, further or even improve their running journeys off the back of it. Well, the first port of call typically for anyone looking to improve is a coach and a few weeks ago I had the pleasure of sitting down with Vince Wilson.  Vince is a former GB 800/1500m runner and a successful athletics endurance coach with the likes of Sam Harrison, Calli Thackery and Ronnie o Sullivan under his watchful eye. In this conversation we journey through Vince's entry into the sport, managing a growing business whilst also competing as an athlete, working on bottom-end speed to improve yourself across other distances and how he works with periodisation and his athletes to track their progress and programme successful athletic performances. It’s a great conversation with lots of insight. If you are interested in contacting Vince to discuss coaching and get some advice you can find him on Instagram @runcoachvince or alternatively drop him an email at runningcoaching@yahoo.com The podcast Cover photo of Vince and Sam Harrison was taken by @mattmoranphoto on the Night of 10,000m PBs/

Thanks for joining me for an impromptu mid-week special of the show with Eluid Kipchoge's bottle man - Claus-Henning Schulke Schulke, 56, is an amateur triathlete and works as a project manager for a Berlin-based construction company. He was a marathoner himself but switched to triathlon in his twenties. He, however, remained a fan of the long-distance event for years. He has been volunteering at the Berlin Marathon since 1998. When Kipchoge arrived at Berlin Brandenburg Airport on Tuesday, September 20 ahead of the marathon on Sunday, September 25, Schulke surprised his dear friend and discussed their bottle-passing strategy for the event. Schulke’s technique is to wear a Kipchoge nameplate on his forearm, which allows Kipchoge to know where his water is and therefore he does not have to break stride or lose focus. The two first knew each other when Schulke volunteered to be Kipchoge’s water passer in 2018 at the Berlin Marathon. He was instrumental in Kipchoge’s world record performance at the event. I called Claus yesterday to learn about the historic world record run and his crucial role.  A huge thank you to Claus for taking the time to talk to me

hello and welcome back to the big run. I hope you enjoyed last week's conversation with Fabricio. It was a pleasure to do.

You may remember at the start we talked about AI generative art. Inspired by this and encouraged by another artist and listener out in New Zealand (shout out to Logan) I was inspired to use a generate to create this week's podcast cover art.

To create AI art, artists write algorithms not to follow a set of rules, but to “learn” a specific aesthetic by analyzing thousands of images. The algorithm then tries to generate new images in adherence to the aesthetics it has learned.

for this week's guest, I entered the keywords breathe free run strong and applied a cubist filter. It turned out pretty cool I think. You can see the results on IG.

so why breathe free run strong? Well, today's guest has had an exciting journey to arrive on an obsession with breath and its power to change you. After heading up denim at Diesel in the 90s as it had its metoric rise, he changed tack and became a teacher.

Running had always been in his life after being inspired by Zola Budd to run the 1500m at his school barefoot. But when he came across breathe work and nasal breathing things really stepped up.

Ladies and gentlemen Im delighted to welcome Kevin Mcquaid

Found out more about Kevin's work here: www.breathetomove.org

try out some running breath work exercises here: https://breathetomove.org/2021/08/21/running-breathing-tools/

Todays guest is British Olympic Athlete Amy Eloise Markovc.  Born in Stockport, Markovc moved to the United States with her parents at the age of two to live in Snohomish - a town named after a native American settlement. Located an hour north of Seattle, it became her home and where she fell in love with running at the age of six, later saying “it was always running for me, even from a young age”. Welcome to the 100th episode.  Yes that's right, we have reached 100 episodes. I’m not quite sure how but I am sure that every single conversation has been stimulating and so rewarding and I am grateful to all the guests who have given their time, insight and perspective by coming on the show. A previous guest, the wonderful Tilly, who recently joined me in Victoria park proposed the idea that she would like to interview me. So I thought, as an experiment that maybe for episode 100 you might like a little bit more insight into your host. Tilly joined me on London's south bank for coffee and pastries. We talk about being more than one thing, the version of yourself you present to the different people your around, dealing with loss, running as a performance and so much more. I hope you enjoy Listen to Tilly here

Today's guest is Patrick Stangbye.  Patrick grew up in the suburbs of Oslo in Norway, he’s a creative director who works closely alongside brands to tell a story and communicate with their audience. Also, an accomplished runner after taking up the sport following his first marathon in 2016 he is often found on the trails in Norway hoovering up vert and pushing himself physically, taking on UTMB CCC in 2019 and again this year in August. In this conversation we talk about the simplest definition of what he does for a living, Norwegian food staples, technical outdoor wear as a reflection of our times and that sometimes ultra running is just plain hard.

Wendy is a British former athlete who won a silver medal in the 3000m in the 1984 LA Olympics and won the 1983 10km world road race champs in San Diego. She is now a non-executive director for British athletics and works as managing director for Athletics Weekly. From one AW key player to another, Jason Henderson has been joining The Big Run on our monthly episodes for the racing forecast. It felt only right to get him on the line to give his take on the elite fields for May 14th. You can read more preview action over on the AW website here:  https://athleticsweekly.com/ Hot on his heels and the man of the moment its Ellis Cross. I caught up with Ellis Cross to take stock of a different kind of 10,000m that captured everyone's imagination last week and what his hopes are on the track this Saturday.

Running Towards Nature. Hello and welcome back to The Big Run.  Last Sunday on a sunny Easter weekend. I had the chance to link with Marlon Patrice and some of the members of We Go Outside Too.  Marlon had organised a coach to bring members of the group down to Kew Gardens in London.  Following the tragic death of his son in 2020, due to knife crime, and the onset of the COVID pandemic, Marlon was compelled to turn his grief into a power for good. ‘We Go Outside Too’ is his brainchild, an active group making the countryside accessible, with a clear focus on empowering the Black Community to experience the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of nature. A keen runner, Marlon has been a member of City of Birmingham Striders since 2010, recently turning out for the national road relays as well as taking on the Palestine Marathon.  I tagged along to chat with Marlon and some members of the group as they explored Kew.   A big thankyou to Marlon Patrice, Tessfa Boyd, Abdul Abz Shahid and Jazzmin Fletcher for their time.  You can find out more about We Go Outside Too, Marlon and Patrees Herb and Wellness using the links below https://www.instagram.com/wegooutsidetoo/ https://www.instagram.com/marlonpatrice/ https://www.instagram.com/patreesherbsandwellness/

Welcome back, and thanks for joining me for The Big Run.  I hope you enjoyed last month's journal episode.  This week we are back with another post-run chat and coffee with all-round Legend Jonty Brown.  Jonty is a barber, Adidas London coach, a drummer, a surfer, and crypto loving, positive force for good. In lockdown 1 he started running. In August 2021, after 18 months of hard work and training, he organized and took on his first challenge. He ran 190 miles along the Wainwrights coast to coast across the UK, averaging 28 miles a day for 7 days raising over £10,500 for charity. In this chat we break down his journey into running, his fundraising for diabetes, how knee braces perhaps aren't the one and his hop crypto tip!  JOKE - THIS IS NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE! SOAR COMP WINNER ANNOUNCED.  Have a listen to the intro to find out the winner of the performance of the month.  I hope you enjoy the conversation. Danny  Follow Jonty here: https://www.instagram.com/chasingchangedoco/ where you can learn more about his run club, work as an Adidas coach and check out his spring hair do!

Welcome back to the monthly journal supported by SOAR running This month we open our pages to explore the theme of Healing.  From intimate journal entries, calls to adventure, creating visibility and connecting deeper to your body.  Join us as we move through these different stories.  Actor Joanna Horton kicks us off by reading 'Scaffolding" by Seamus Heaney. Keiran Alger from The Run Testers drops in to fill us in on his latest epic adventure - Run The Blue.  I join former guests Paula Bedford of Camino Ultra and Ryan Jensen, Feldenkrais practitioner to observe and participate in a session to explore the practice and learn what it means to listen to your body.  And all-round hero Tasha Thompson, founder of Black Girls Do Run, joined me in a freezing Hyde Park to talk about resetting the dial on who can be a runner, being a hero to her kids and encouraging change.  Enjoy the journal and thanks for joining me for The Big Run Danny

Welcome to the second monthly entry into The Big Run Journal.  This month's theme is legacy.  The legacy of a legendary event, the legacy you want to leave for your family and building the legacy of something brand new, from the ground up.  Kicking us off we have Emily Barber reading "Rupi & Liv" by Verity Ockenden, a poem Verity wrote after being inspired by the legacy of another artist's work.  After that, we launch into our coverage from The National XC champs at parliament hill a fortnight ago. A huge thank you to the ECCA, the City of London and all the club members who let me interview them that day. A big thank you to Megan, Holly and Glynis of Cambridge Harriers.  Kieran Alger returns for a 2-minute review of Therabody's latest recovery offering.  We then shift gears to a short story sent in by a listener. Jack Derges who discovered the pod and answered the call to send in his running story. Jack features as an additional voice.  Then its over to Jason Henderson of Athletics weekly with his racing forecast looking ahead at all the exciting things to look forward to on the track, in the fields and on the roads. We close out with Jareth Ashbrook of the new running clothing brand Wyrd. Based out of Hong Kong but originally from the UK Jazz started the company with no previous experience in fashion but has crafted a really exciting and intriguing brand.  Thank you to all of our contributors and do get in touch if you think there's a story, event or idea you want me to cover.  I hope you enjoy the episode Danny

His book, The Skeptic's Guide to Sports Science, was named as one of Book Authority's "Best sports science books of all time". Welcome to the first Monthly entry into The Big Run journal.

The loose thread stitching together this month's entry is desire.

The desire for adventure, the desire to find joy in what you do. Whatever it means to you.

Kicking us off is decorated actor and knight of the realm, Sir Simon Russell Beale reading "Glory, Glory, Glory!" by a former guest, talented runner and supremely gifted wordsmith Sean Hamilton.

We then head out to North West London for adventure and trail with the wonderful community of runners that is Camino Ultra.

At 19:45 Keiran Alger from The Run Testers drops in with the 2 Minute Review on the latest offering from Garmin with their new Epix watches.

2 minutes later...obvs 😜...we have...

Irish international and 2:09 marathoner Stephen Scullion on the perils of Twitter, mental health, finding the joy in what you do and an insight into the hard work of elite-level training camps.

At 54:05, we take a pause to be joined by the editor of Athletics Weekly, Jason Henderson for the racing forecast. Jason takes us through the main events on the calendar for the next month, who to look out for and where you can watch the action. Its a must to plan out your racing calendar.

Then we jump back to Stephen at 1hr we jump back to Stephen to close us out and find out what desire means to him as a runner and a Harry Potter fan 😀

Hello and welcome back to another bumper edition of The Big Run in collaboration with A Runners Life podcast. Today's episode is a deep dive into the oldest marathon of the majors: Boston. Myself and Marcus had two fascinating conversations for this episode with Dave McGillivray race director of The Boston Marathon and then with Kathrine Switzer and Rosy Spraker. Kathrine was the very first guest on this podcast and Im delighted to have her back. She is joined with 14 time Boston finisher Rosy who is a member of her 261 fearless organisation.  You can hear Kathrine and Rosy from 01:15:20 But we kick things off with Dave who has looked after the race since 1988 and is an extraordinary athlete in his own right. He raced across America in 1978 in 80 days averaging 45 miles a day and to date has 160 marathons to his name a fair few of them done at Boston directly after he has finished being the race director!  I hope you enjoy the episode Danny

Hello and welcome to this bumper magazine episode celebrating all things London. The marathon is 6 days away and myself and Marcus Brown wanted to uncover as much as we could about the race from Elite Athletes, training and what's involved in staging one of the majors.  We spoke to Charlie Hulson, The Altitude Centre and the legendary Hugh Brasher for this episode. See below for the timestamps of where you can find the interviews.  1 min 28 secs - Charlie Hulson. 2:13 Marathoner who will be competing this year in the men's elite field. Charlie took part in last years 40th race and juggles being an elite athlete with running his family bakery.  41 min 27 secs - The Altitude Centre. Me and Marcus paid a visit to the team in central London to get a better understanding of what is involved in altitude training and the benefits it can have.  1hr 26 mins - Hugh Brasher - Hugh needs no introduction. He has been connected to the race throughout its history as well as many other iconic sporting moments in running. “I don’t like dropping out of races, I feel like when you drop out once, then mentally, it’s bad for you. I always make sure I finish, even if I’m crawling through the line” – Mo Hashi, track and middle-distance runner

How do you know when you’ve got your pace right? We spoke to track and middle-distance runner Mo Hashi about how to get your timings just right during a tempo run with him at Bushy Park.

He may not think it, but Mo Hashi is fast, the track and middle-distance runner, who uses his spare time to compete in competitions up and down the country, has a current 5K PB at 14 minutes 35. But what motivates him to get out on the track and how hard does he push himself? Here, we talk to him about his training style, being a body double for Mo Farah and training to the point of vomiting.

You can hear Mo’s full conversation on the Big Run podcast sponsored by exhale.

Join me for post run chats with with track and middle-distance runners like Mo, along with GB runner Holly Rush, and ultra runner Mark Kerry.

Exhale coffee is the dream. As soon as you open the bag your know you are in for a treat and when you taste it....delicious!

It’s also good for you.

That's because it's the first speciality coffee In the UK to be sourced and roasted especially for health Independent tests show 1 cup of Exhale healthy coffee to have the antioxidant power of 12 punnets of blueberries, 55 oranges or 1.2kg of kale.

There is nothing added and is one of the richest sources of niacin in our diets and is free from any nasties including mycotoxins, pesticides, toxins and heavy metals.

Holly Rush is an ex-international road marathon runner turned ultra trail runner. She didn’t start running competitively until her late 20’s and started out as a fun runner. So in 2010 when she was selected to represented Great Britain at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona (18th and team Bronze) she couldn’t believe how far she had come. She went on to come 8th at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and has represented GB at the World Mountain Championships twice winning team silver and bronze.

Holly has over 10 years of personal training under her belt, is a qualified sports therapist, level 2 run coach and has a masters degree in sports coaching. She is also the ASICS UK FrontRunner community manager.

Welcome back to another episode of "The First Mile Always Lies..." a collaboration between TBR and A Runners Life hosted by Marcus Brown.

This episode has been supported by Let's Do This.

Let's Do This is the UK's leading platform for discovering & booking endurance sports events. Be it running, cycling, swimming, triathlon, obstacle or something else - you can choose from 1000s of events throughout the UK.

A few weeks back Marcus and I headed to kent to capture the stories of the runners taking part in the Ultra Black Running trail event.

On July 31st, Dora Atim – founder of Ultra Black Running – and MOJU Drinks partnered with Maverick Race, one of the UK’s leading trail running organisers, to create an event that broke down the financial, emotional, and physical barriers which limit access to the sport. The event saw a new wave of attendees join Maverick’s community to create a race village full of smiles, music, food and, ultimately, a welcoming environment united by a shared passion – running.

You can’t be what you can’t see, and organiser Dora was inspired to put on the event having experienced a lack of representation at previous races.

It was a thrill to witness and capture the atmosphere and made me yearn to get out on the trails asap!

Huge props to Dora for bringing this to fruition and the fantastic team at Maverick for creating a great event.

George is recognisable to Channel 4 audiences for his role in Hunted & Celebrity Hunted. Utilising his skills as a former senior Detective in the Metropolitan Police Service to track down fugitives.

George joined the police force at 16 as a Police Cadet, at a time of growing conflict between the police and the black community. He was one of the very few black policemen in the force. Over 31 years George worked in all areas of policing. As a uniform officer he was at the 1981 Brixton Riots and preceding the riots George policed the New Cross march across Blackfriars Bridge where he was seriously injured.

George went on to be a Detective Inspector, head of a specialist unit in the Serious and Organised Crime Command, based at New Scotland Yard. During the rise of 'Black on Black' crime in London George attended murder/crime scenes, interviews and worked as family liaison. As a result of the racial murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence, George worked closely with the Lawrence family and then at the highest level, trained UK's Senior Investigating Officers and Chiefs of Police in investigating racially motivated crimes, police perceptions and behaviour, media appeals and dealing with grieving families.

George also worked as a Hostage and Crisis Negotiator, dealing with kidnap & ransom cases.

Whilst in the police George also designed and managed a youth empowerment programme in the London Borough of Westminster, Hackney and Haringey. George also established the Black Police Association and drove diversity change throughout the police service. He won several awards for this innovative programme, which is now established in the police service as a community strategy to connect with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. George consistently boxed competitively for the British Police Boxing Team.

Since his retirement from the Met, George went on to work in the USA for the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau (INLA). George was selected by the INLA as Team Leader of an international team of law enforcement experts to work on sensitive matters in Mexico. George received a commendation for his work from the US Secret Service.

* A Word Of Caution Please be aware some this episode contains descriptions of racial abuse, racist language, descriptions of self-harm and bullying and at around 1 hour and 40 minutes there is some description of the 7/7 bombings that some listeners may find upsetting. For this event, Toby is looking for his entire crew/pacers to be made up of runners who identify as LGBTQIA+. If this sounds like you then click the link below for more info.
