Parent and Carers Council (PACC) Shropshire host a monthly look into what's new in Shropshire's Special Educational Needs and Disability community. Discussing the issues our SEND community are wanting to know more about and deep diving into a specific topic, service, or area of need each month with guests. There will be a Q&A opportunity for our SEND community to ask questions of our guests each month too.This podcast is a conversational style podcast which explores the challenging and complex world of SEND. This month we are joined by Marilyn Webster, Director and Mediator, and Hugo Besterman, Director and Mediator, from Prime SEND Mediation Services. We are exploring how mediation is an important part of dispute resolution, how it can enable solution focused discussions when there is a challenge made to decisions around the Education Health Care Plan process or content. We also discuss a workshop planned for October 2021 to further this discussion with Parent Carers in Shropshire.

This month we are joined by Shropshire GP and Parent Carer, Dr Ella Baines, to discuss Annual Health Checks and their role in supporting our Learning Disabled community in accessing good health care. We talk about a lot of related topics, but the core discussion remains the benefits of the Annual Health Checks. Please note that we do also discuss sexual health, so you may want to avoid listening to this in front of younger or sensitive ears.
This month we take a closer look at the changes being made to the targeted support offer for children and young people with SEND who cannot access mainstream activities in their local communities. Actio Consortium are a collective of community and voluntary sector organisations who share a passion for making community activities more accessible to SEND families. They are comprised of Energize Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, Ignition CIC, and PACC Shropshire (that's us!), who collectively aim to improve the range and quality of Short Breaks activities by providing a new approach to All In Short Breaks program development and commissioning. Harry Cade joins us in this episode to explain what has changed and why.
In this episode we explore the new Shropshire SEND Strategy with Shropshire Councils SEN Service Manager Julia Dean and Principal Educational Psychologist Poppy Chandler, Participation Lead for PACC Sarah Thomas, and Shropshire Telford & Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Groups Designated Clinical Officer, Jennifer Griffin.
We discuss why the strategy is important to families who have a child or young person who has a Special Educational Need and/or Disability, what the strategy is for and does, and the key messages it contains.
