The Preacher's Perspective

The only way to avoid becoming stagnant is to keep our relationship with God at the forefront of everything we do. After recognizing the call of God, keeping ourselves close to it must be our single most important priority. Every aspect of our lives will be drastically affected when God calls us into the ministry. Knowing this, we must prioritize the call above everything else. If we fail to properly prioritize the call of God in our lives, we will not be successful nor satisfied in anything else we do, and God’s voice will slowly fade into a distant memory.

The call is not contingent upon how good or how talented we are. It is only contingent upon our ability to give God the glory for the great things He does through us. Our abilities are not our own. They are only on loan to us from God. It would do us good to remember that and to keep ourselves in the right perspective while God elevates us to higher heights in both the supernatural and the natural. I have seen men and women fall during this time of elevation, simply because they did not keep the right perspective of who they are and who God is. We will only be what God allows us to be. Some people have natural abilities to preach and move people with their words. Some can sing and move people with their music. But God is the One who gave them the ability to do so. If we ever think our talents are attributed to our own strength, education, or training, we are quickly headed for a fall.

“For many be called, but few chosen.” This call goes out to many, but those who become the chosen are those who endure long enough to receive the second call from God. The first call brings about a process of elimination that God uses to cause the committed to rising to the top. The first call is hard. It isn’t for the weak or lazy. Only those who prove themselves worthy will endure beyond the first call to receive the second.

No matter where we are or what we are facing in our walk with God, the most important thing is that we make ourselves available to hear His voice. We must fine-tune our ears to His call. God can use any situation we face and turn us into great assets for His Kingdom if we will only allow Him to do the work.

God does not only want us to hear Him. He wants us to both hear and understand. God is not some mysterious being that is far removed from our circumstances and situations. He is nearer than we think and is closely connected to what is happening in our lives. Since the Garden of Eden, God has desired a time of communion with each of us. He wants us to know Him as He knows us. We cannot just push the thought of speaking to God aside and ignore it simply because we do not have a clear understanding of how He communicates with us. We must learn His ways, we must seek His will, and we must tune our ears to His voice.

Depression

I Timothy 1:2-11

“that thou mightiest charge some that they teach no there doctrine,” Charge here is parangéllō - to give orders, or command. Paul begins his letter to Timothy with a reminder of what he is supposed to be doing. Preach to others, telling them what they should be preaching.
- Make sure the doctrine is right.

Fables - Don’t teach/preach things that are based on myth and traditions.
Get your story straight. We don’t preach our ideas or our opinions, we must only preach truth.
Endless genealogies - Things pertaining to an “enriched” history based on Jewish interpretation and additions of the OT.
We must stop wasting time trying to prove to each other how smart we are. We are called to a purpose, to reach the lost.
We are not preaching to prove who we are or how much we know about the bible, We are preaching to prove who God is to those who do not believe.
- We are not to add or take away from what the Word of God says. Rev 22:18-19.
- We have been entrusted with the responsibility of preserving the most sacred of truths. This is not philosophy, this is salvation.
- We cannot give in to the temptation to be a motivational speaker. We are called to the purpose of saving souls from eternal damnation.
- We cannot give in to the temptation to preach an easier gospel. The Gospel is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is what was required in the beginning and it is what is required today.
- We cannot give in to the temptation to debate with endless questions of the Word of God.
Our job is to edify the church in faith.
Our preaching must be done in and through a position of love.
We must not preach our frustrations, we must only preach the freshly spoken Word of God as He gives it.
- Always resist the desire to “fix” things with preaching. If we have an individual in mind that our “word” is designed for, we should go back to the prayer room and seek God’s Word for the day.
- God doesn’t need a “fixer” He needs a preacher.
The messages God gives us to preach must first change and affect our hearts before they will ever be effective in anyone else’s heart.
The preached Word of God brings conviction which leads to repentance, Man’s word brings condemnation which leads to self-righteousness.
Some have turned from the purpose God has called them to. This can be identified in their preaching. This kind of preaching turns into an egotistical rant which is nothing more than empty speech. In this kind of speaking there are no “words of life”.
Empty words lead to empty hearts. Empty hearts lead to apathetic christians who have no desire to rise above this world into what God has called them to be.
These are really not christians at all. They are self-serving, selfish, unreliable, servants of the flesh.
Preacher you have been called to live a higher life, a more dedicated life, a more determined life. Mediocrity is not an option.
Being called to this purpose is being called to a life of more:
- We are to pray more, fast more, read more, study more, suffer more.
- Great anointing can only come through great suffering. This is the only way we can achieve the balance that is necessary to carry the weight from the glory of God in our lives.
