I've been questioning the direction of this podcast for a while now, and I've decided to take my own advice and take a pause. I'm going to take a break for a few months to reassess, reconfigure and reorganize to make sure I'm maximizing my efforts and time and providing you with the value that you deserve. I've been flying by the seat of my pants for quite some time and that's not how I want to show up any longer. When I started this podcast I was neck deep in 12 step recovery, and I thought that was exactly what I'd be talking about here...think again! After leaving AA I didn't ever make a new plan, I threw the plans out the window and went with the topics that showed up in my daily life. I'm glad I did and was able to help some of you with my experience. "There once was a man who stood on the bank of a large lake, and had never been on the other side. He built a wood canoe so he could cross this enormous body of water. When he got to the other side, he hoisted the canoe on his shoulder and carried it around everywhere he went. His experience on the other side of the lake was mostly about keeping up with the canoe, and not the experience itself of discovering a new reality he had not known before...Make good use of any understanding, concept or tool...as it relates to the end of your suffering. Then you may discard it because it served its purpose. Do not be like the man who carried his canoe around on his back after the use of the canoe was no longer necessary."-These are notes from Over The Edge by Jim PalmerI found AA and 12 step recovery to be my canoe...The pause is a concept I learned about in AA. To take a beat to assess and give yourself time to respond rather than react on impulse. I'm overdue for a pause. I plan to return after summer with a new plan, resolve and message. Where could you use a pause in your life? You are so loved.#goodwords #goodwordspodcast #ramdass #spirituality #integration #thesoberbartender #podcast #soberbartender #recovery #wedorecover #sober #soberlife #multiplepathways #harmreduction #education #advocate #reducethestigma #recoveryfromlife #recoveryofself #recoverydharma #smartrecovery #12steps #soberpodcast #recoverypodcast #courseinmiracles #meditation #hangoverfree #quitdrinking #sobertravel #sobersummer #feelings #feelingsarentfacts #feelingishealing #youareenough #youarenotalone #youareloved #loveyourself #equanimity #acceptance #itiswhatitis #shift #optimism #perspectiveshift #perspective #createyourreality #free #overwhelmed #stress #copingmechanisms #peoplepleaser #honesty #success #innerpeace #drwaynedyer #lovingwhatis #byronkatie

Just before recording this I was praying for guidance and direction regarding our adoption journey. As I opened my eyes and went to record-my phone rang...it was the niece of a friend from the golf course who is an invaluable resource to have in our corner!! I cried tears of joy as she talked to me about who she is and what she does in the state of Texas! Is it odd...or is it God?? I think I know the answer to that! This week I'm taking a break from addressing challenges and issues to offer some of my favorite Good Words from Thich Nhat Hanh, Ram Dass, Wayne Dyer, Eckart Tolle, Rumi and Deepak Chopra. Just listen in and let their insight wash over you. Save your troubles for another day. Today, in this moment, join me in just being. I'm doing a series on topics given by YOU-the listener. Each week I'm answering a question or addressing an issue with Good Words. This week's question is "I'm not drinking right now, how do you go to things that are not your favorite or make you uncomfortable and not drink? What did you do when you first stopped and went to uncomfortable things that you already know you don't enjoy?" I can definitely answer this one!I offer a variety of coping strategies and techniques but what I really offer is the way out of the discomfort...spoiler alert-the only way out is through!! You've got to get comfortable feeling uncomfortable sometimes. You've got to be kind to yourself and know that it's not only okay, but normal to feel uncomfortable in some situations. Don't get caught up in the story that you shouldn't feel this way or that way, you do feel that way and your okay. You're safe. What's uncomfortable is avoiding the feeling or fighting reality. I recently asked you, the listener what your facing today, and what you'd like to hear discussed on the podcast. One dear listener wrote-How to accept and love the life you have when it's not how you imagined it. This is huge and I know I can totally relate!! If you would've asked 20 year old me to describe what my life could or should look like at 40...I wouldn't have been able to picture the life I'm living now. If you would've asked 35 year old me I still couldn't have pictured myself here. This episode isn't called How Did I Get Here, because we're not focusing on the past. We're talking about acceptance, which anyone who's had the pleasure of early sobriety knows a thing or two about. We're talking about gratitude. We're talking about inquiry and finding a way to make peace with reality. I feel good about this one. You are so loved.

The one that doesn't play into the dysfunction is targeted as the problem. -Teal SwanWhat is a scapegoat? A person who is blamed for the wrong doings, mistakes or faults of others, especially for reasons of convenience. They are the one that bears the blame for others and is the object of irrational hostility. They are portrayed in a negative light to others. They are painted as unlikeable and their character is consistently attacked. This is abuse. This is gaslighting. This is not your fault and it is not ok.You are so loved.

I recently asked for listener input for situations that you're struggling with and would like some help reframing. One woman reached out and shared: "How do I overcome embarrassing memories? I think about them in the middle of the night and then I'm up all night with anxiety."Why do we get embarrassed? The root cause seems that we're anticipating a negative evaluation from others. We think that the image of ourselves we'd like to portray has been undermined and that it creates a negative impression of who we are. We're worried they'll judge us based on that interaction-but in reality-we're judging ourselves worse that they ever could or would!Instead f trying to forget it, it may be helpful to accept it and even laugh at it. Talk to a trusted friend or relative who can help you see the humor in the situation. Remember that we all make mistakes and NO ONE thinks about us as much as we think about ourselves. What you're focusing on is in the past-focus forward. It's totally ok to visit past memories, they can be a compass and guide us in the direction we don't want to go. Just don't stay there! You can analyze the circumstances and see where you can redirect and make adjustments. You can even list 5 your top 5 cringe worthy memories then really as yourself-was it really that big of a deal? Was it the end of the world? So what if I did or said something silly? If you hurt yourself, someone else or altered relationships then this is an opportunity to self reflect and use it to alter your choices and actions, but if not-give yourself a great big break!! Do you allow yourself to make mistakes?? How would you think of or judge your child, best friend, sister if they did or said the same thing or something similar? Would it carry the same weight? Would it keep you up at night? It's time to set the past down, you're not headed there. In these moments give yourself the grace you'd give to a loved one and allow yourself to be human. If you need a reminder that we all do things we aren't proud of you can call and swap stories with me...Remember, these feelings are based on what you think other people are thinking about you. Repeat this mantra-I am who I think you think I amYou are so loved.

In 2 months I'll be 40!! I can confirm that it's not as scary as I thought it would be, but I also thought I'd have it all figured out by now. I'm here to encourage you to embrace your aging while you're still here! It is a privelige to wake up everyday. Aging is an opportunity to be grateful for the things that haven't taken you out! In this episode I urge you to embrace your life, your age, and get busy living it to it's fullest-TODAY! One day we will all die. The things we worried about won't matter (for the most part). The excuses you had for not running toward your dreams like you were on fire won't have any relevance. So what's stopping you? Things that don't matter in the big picture. You are so loved.

Are you avoiding anything lately? How would you know if you were? Do you have a firm WHY in place and a clear vision of your purpose?...because I don't...I have recognized some pretty intense avoidance going on lately. I feel good then tune out, I'm making dinner, then grabbing my phone. Why do I call this avoidance? Because it happens in the calm moments that I normally use to connect with my higher self. To connect with what I'm doing. To feel deeply. As soon I saw this happening I sat quietly and I felt. What followed was burnout, overwhelm, exhaustion. Not so pleasant feeling were just below the surface of my distraction. Good news-I felt them, I let them in without pushing them away, and I know that eventually, they will pass.In this episode I unravel the EGO-but not like you've heard it before-as some evil, self-absorbed nuisance that we need to work to rid ourselves of. Let's think of our ego is an Earth Guide Only. Ego drives the human ship in many instances. Our appearance, our things, our wants and desires. These things are bad but they are limited to the flesh. That is not who you truly are. You are not your body. You are not something that can be touched. Not the YOU you. So recognizing the difference between which guidance system is driving and turning to the spirit over the physical can be achieved when we catch ourselves. We're in the season of family in our life so far this year. What I mean by that is there is a closeness, despite the physical distance, that is seen, felt and expressed often and it is the very best feeling!! We've had family come to visit in Texas, I've been to Utah and we have family in town now even!! My mom-in-law is a HUGE supporter of this podcast and I know she's listening when I wonder if anyone actually is. My cousin's talked to me about the show and shared some of their relatable struggles. This was almost the never the case in my previous life...
I've expressed before that I felt judged and rejected by my family. I felt like I wasn't good enough for them. The problem with that was-they never expressed those feelings. They missed me and worried about me. It was me that Judged and rejected them. That is until I took a ling hard look at my own thoughts and actions, my perceptions of others and choose to look again. Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change! I just had the best visit to Utah for my little brother's wedding. I got to spend time with my grandma's. I got to dance with my niece and nephew. I LOVED getting to spend alone time with my dad. Because I was willing to. They didn't change to fit my idea of who they should be, how often they should call or visit. I chose to love them exactly like they are. What a relief and a blessing!!
I want to encourage you to pick up the phone. Call and ask about their day, their friends, hobbies, memories-whatever. Just put aside what you want from them and show up as who you want to be. Give them the love you desire. Be the change. You may not get what you want, but you may feel better knowing you tried.

How do you handle setbacks? This week I'm sharing a glimpse into our first setback (of many, I'm sure) on the road to becoming parents through adoption. We're early in the process, but we were close to signing with an agency...until our funding fell through. Disappointed, yes, but discouraged we are not. We WILL be parents, just not on our timing. So I'm learning how I handle setbacks in this season of life. The answer so far, is not as well as I would have hoped, but through the lens of love, not bad at all. I'm not drinking nor is it a factor. I'm sober, healthy, married to an amazing man and haven't I cried in 2 whole days! This wouldn't be the case a few years ago. So I'll give myself credit there. I am a work in progress. The greatest breakthroughs come after breakdowns and I think this one opened me up for some serious growth.I needed to get vulnerable here and let you know that although I know and share all the things to do to stay sober, spiritually aligned and living in harmony with the spirit of the universe, I also struggle HARD sometimes. I missed an episode last week. I couldn't muster any good words. I have been avoiding all the things that I normally find comfort and grounding in. No meditation. No journaling. No exercise or healthy movement. No greeting the sunrise with gratitude. The one day I did try to meet the sun I got a ticket. It's been a doozy of a pity party y'all. But I'm here, dusting myself off and bringing awareness to what I've been choosing.Today I'm choosing to give up faith in the ways of the world. I'm choosing to embrace the world of spirit-unconditionally. I'm choosing to trust that any setback is a redirection on my path. This pain is a blessing. We know we want to be parents, to raise kids, to grow our family and share our love with a new life. I'm ditching the drug of doubt-which undermines my confidence and sends me seeking approval before making decisions. I have every right to have confidence in myself and be trusting of sprit. I'm giving myself a big 'ol break and trusting the Universe completely.

Today we're tapping into Dr. Wayne Dyer for his 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace. He actually wrote this book for his daughters, but the gems within are spread throughout his talks and books across the years. I'm sharing them with you today and I invite you to join me in applying them today and everyday hereafter.1. Be Open To Everything & Attached To Nothing-open your mind to ALL possibilities! Believe all things are possible. If you believe you can or believe you can't-YOU'RE RIGHT! Attachment creates all of our problems. The need to be right, to have something or someone, to win-all attachments. Refuse negative thinking. Refuse pessimism! We have just as much evidence to be positive as we do to be negative.2. Don't Die With Your Music Still In You-Go after your passions!3. You Can't Give Away What You Don't Have-Whatever you're full of is what will overflow. What comes out of you in words and actions is what's inside you. What's inside you now? Aim to respond with love in all circumstances. Fill yourself with love and love is what will overflow. You get what you give.4. Embrace Silence-Meditate and take time to listen to the sounds of nature5. Give Up Your Personal History-The past is gone! Line in the now. To create change, live from today without yesterdays narrative, conditioning or influencing. Remove your labels. You aren't your past. Don't get stuck in the story you tell about who you are, based on where you've been.6. Improve Your Mindset-You experience everything and everyone as thoughts in your head. Your thoughts are the source of virtually everything in your life. What are you thinking about your life? Change your thoughts, change your life.7. No Resentments-Stop giving your emotional wellbeing over to someone else. Don't blame anyone else. Take full responsibility for your life. It's yours. Send love, peace and joy to whatever comes your way. Do not accept people's offers of criticism. What you think of me is none of my business. Refuse to be offended. Don't judge others either. Judging is defining. Aim to remain open minded and hearted. Be peaceful, forgive others, let go and be free.8. Treat Yourself As If You Already Are What You Want To Be-Act as if. Act as if you're already a mother, a business owner or a motivational speaker, etc. Visualize how future you would think, feel and speak-then GO DO IT! It starts with thoughts, then feelings, then actions.9. Treasure Your Divinity-Everything is a miracle. Every moment is sacred. You are a piece of the divine intelligence that supports everything. You are source energy in the flesh!10. Wisdom Is Avoiding All Thoughts That Weaken You-Forgive yourself for shame, guilt and apathy. Turn over issues, fears and problems to your higher self-not your ego.You are so loved.

Do you ever catch yourself drowning in a fog cloud? Do you ever stop and realize you put it there, and you can take it away? Even the most positive thinker falls prey to the doom, or overwhelm or overscheduling...Do you ever catch the miracles that are occuring on the daily in your life? I guess that depends on what you consider a miracle I suppose...like our very existence, for starters. How about a hypothetical road that's been blocked that is suddenly un-blocked...Some unclimbable mountain that suddenly has a chair lift or unexplained gondola installed out of the blue. Staying in a steady state of gratitude lights the way!I'm so grateful for my mom's health, my Grandma's legacy and focus on her blessings, and the clear, beautiful picture that these women have painted for me on what it's really all about, as I grow into this next phase of life. What phase is that? 40 and motherhood for starters!! We are adopting! John Koenig coined the neologism word Sonder for his online dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. The definition of Sonder is the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own-populated with their own ambitions, friends, routine, etc. Something to ponder...The heart is for giving. Which means that the heart is for-giving...forgiving. But why can't we listen to our heart when it's time to forgive? Our mind lists the reasons we can't or won't but our heart is for it. This week I'm in absolute awe at our human experience. All that had to happen for you and I to be here, at this time, living this life. It's truly amazing! The fact that each morning we wake up and our eyes know to open and this body and brain runs it's program that it's learned through it's experience. It's incredible when you really think about it. And yet somehow we still manage to let negative thinking run it's automatic program and steal our joy. I listened to an interview with Price Pritchett on The School of Greatness podcast recently and he spoke about the 5 C's of Negative Thinking. Now that I'm aware of these things I'm constantly catching myself caught up in them! Fortunately, it's also the awareness of them that allows us to shift it and choose a better feeling thought. The negative voice that's running on auto-pilot in your mind's background is the discounter, the doubter and the demotivator. It plays the story from the past instead of pushing you into living now and building a brighter future. It takes loads of practice, discipline and awareness to shift and shut it down but it's totally doable! The 5 C's are: 1. Complaining2. Criticizing3. Concern4. Commiserating5. CatastrophizingCreating deep and profound change isn't the result of one BIG proclamation or decision...it's a serious of small choices that support the big decision over and over, day after day, until a new program is installed. It's the daily details that'll get you where you wanna go!You are so loved.#goodwords #goodwordspodcast #ramdass #spirituality #integration #thesoberbartender #podcast #soberbartender #recovery #wedorecover #sober #soberlife #multiplepathways #harmreduction #education #advocate #reducethestigma #recoveryfromlife #recoveryofself #recoverydharma #smartrecovery #12steps #soberpodcast #recoverypodcast #courseinmiracles #meditation #hangoverfree #quitdrinking #sobertravel #sobersummer #feelings #feelingsarentfacts #feelingishealing #youareenough #youarenotalone #youareloved #loveyourself #equanimity #acceptance #itiswhatitis #shift #optimism #perspectiveshift #perspective #createyourreality #free #overwhelmed #stress #copingmechanisms #peoplepleaser #honesty

Can you think of a single time that worrying has solved a problem in your life? I can't. It's our own thoughts that disturb our peace, even more so than situations themselves. Our thoughts keep telling the story. Our thoughts keep the past active in our present. My own personal thoughts tend to go straight to the worst case scenario, never to the best possible outcome. So how do we out-think this subconcious program of negativity? Spoiler alert...WE DON'T!
Insert meditation. Why do we meditate? To stop our thoughts? Not at all. Insert gratitude. Why be grateful? It can literally propel you into positivity. I briefly discuss applying Buddhist practices and principles to end the suffering of addiction (Recovery Dharma) and touch on the 4 Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. Being wise to end our own suffering.

I used to think that healing through meditation meant that I needed to strive to be zen-like...to be calm in the face of chaos...unbothered like the lotus flower. I'm finding that to not be the case. I want to sing louder as I heal. Dance wilder. Be more direct. More honest. Love deeper. Feel more fully. I'm gaining these things slowly as I continue to practice my practice. My perception of what it would be like was far from the reality. I've learned to be more accepting of situations. Respond different. Not dwell.I received a message from a dear friend that said "Welcoming everything that comes to us is the challenge. This is the secret to being fully alive."The topic was grief, but these Good Words wrapped around my mind and I knew that they applied to it all. This walk we call our lives, strolling through the joys and sorrows, the ebb and flow of circumstance, choice and outcome. It's all a lesson. It's all teaching us. And I've learned the most from the worst of it. I love the concept that welcoming it all-that which we deem bad, negative, undesirable, right along with the "good", positive and stuff we want more of-is the challenge. Every emotion. Every feeling. Every experience. Even our judgements. Welcome them. This is the secret to being fully alive. Not escaping, numbing, rejecting, or pushing away. Welcome it all. FEEL IT ALL. It won't kill you. These feeling can't eat you. The only way out is through, and going through will take you on the ride of your life. You're doing great. You can't do YOU wrong. Love you

Season 2 is moving along nicely with big evolutions happening every single week! In this rebranding I wanted to zoom out from talking about sobriety and recovery, but I was given the gift of some HUGE reminders that everything good in my life is the result of getting sober. It would be nice to let that fact fade into the background and move onward and upward as life continues to get better and better. But that's not how it works.
When I ask How Can I Help? Who Can I Help? I'm met with the question-What breaks your heart? It's our suffering. The obsession. The feeling completely stuck in the insane cycle of addiction. It's the trap of our thoughts and perceptions. I know that the greatest thing that I can offer anyone else is the gift that was given to me. The way out. The path out of suffering.
American novelist and social critic Toni Morrison said "If you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else." If you wake up everyday thinking maybe today will be the day you finally quit, and every night you go to bed feeling like you've failed-I see you. You are one day away from creating the lasting change that you can't stop thinking about. It starts with one day. That turns into two. Then a week goes by, and so on. But it starts with one day.
Listen in if you want a hug for your heart. Sending you all love.

Hello and welcome to Good Words! We begin with the lovely reminder that we are not just a human on a spiritual journey, but a spirit having a human experience! Embrace the challenges as opportunities for growth, stay present and cultivate love. In every breath, there is an invitation to return to the essence of your being.
Challenge lies in bridging the gap between our spiritual insights and the way we navigate the world. Bringing the spiritual into the fabric of daily life in the form of conscious communication, acts of kindness and cultivating a loving mindset. Integration is embodying the wisdom gained in moments of clarity.
Ram Dass talk brings up my own experience of "somebody training", trying to change from the outside in, looking for somebody to tell me I'm really somebody, realizing that the inside didn't feel good (which would explain alcohol abuse), the suit I was trying to wear didn't fit. Realized that my soul needed a rest from the character I'd been trying to play. Pain and feeling sick inside led to recovery which led to being true to my deepest self.
We go over the distinct difference in practicing your practice vs getting dragged along by your will run wild! Lots of good words to be heard this week.

It's the very last minute, I'm pretty sure I have a sinus infection, I'm working 7 days a week and it's TIME to release the first episode of season 2...The Thought Alchemist was the plan, but I've been reluctant to take action. I've procrastinated and it's now or be late (might as well be never), I have to create and release something and I'm not loving my new plan. I question everything. Should I keep podcasting? Is this helping? What do I really want to talk about every week? What do I want to contribute to the world?

I'm here to tell you quitting drinking is NOT a punishment for bad behavior!! Why does it feel that way?
While quitting may initially feel like a punishment, those of us who make this choice find long-term benefits in the way of improved physical health, mental well-being and clarity, emotional stability and overall life satisfaction.
If you want to quit drinking but don't identify as an "alcoholic" or "addicted" there are some general strategies and steps you can follow that can be very helpful.
Quitting drinking is a personal journey-not a punishment-and what works for one person may not work for another. It's important to tailor your approach to your individual needs and circumstances. There is no one size fits all solution. If you're struggling, don't hesitate to reach out or seek professional help to ensure you have the support and guidance necessary for success.

I believe that each and every one of us has experienced the negative effects of feeling shame and guilt. This week's guest Lois Hollis was dying at 55. Last week she turned 80 years young! Lois is a shame guilt educator and she's got an important message-Shameful guilt is not only a dangerous emotion-it is deadly. Being closely tied suicide, Dr. David Hawkins calls it "the lowest energy frequency".Lois is here to tell us-Now is the time to release shame guilt from ourselves and avoid it from others. Where does it come from? Does it serve a purpose? How does it effect our mind and body? Lois answers these questions and zeros in on what we really want to know...HOW do we release it? How do we avoid taking it from others? She tells us shameful guilt doesn't belong to you-DON'T OWN IT! The guilt and shame are not yours! She describes them as nothing but a puff of green smoke and likens them to the wonderful all-powerful wizard behind the curtain...Shame and guilt dissolve in detection. This means that once we identify the emotion we can deny it. We can reframe with regret. We can feel anger, sadness and the full spectrum of our emotions, but Lois tells us-this one is a foreign energy and doesn't belong to us. This is a learning process and not an overnight fix, but learning to recognize, deny and cast out shame guilt can lead to relief of mental, emotional and even psychical symptoms that have long held us in a low vibration.

Do you crave a life of adventure and spontaneity? Are you up for anything at a moments notice? Me neither, lol, but I'd like to work on changing that. There's a strong allure to the comfort of home, but this episodes theme is saying YES to adventure despite our resistance. The Comfort Zone Conundrum: there's actual psychological comfort in staying home and the resistance to stepping out of the familiar. We discuss the benefits of stepping outside one's comfort zone and highlight the contrast between routine and the unexpected joys of exploration. The Power of Saying YES: We explore the transformative power of saying yes to adventure. Have you ever seen Yes Man with Jim Carrey? This is what I'm talking about! Adventure doesn't require grand gestures, sometimes it's about seizing small opportunities.Overcoming Obstacles: We address common barriers to embracing adventure, like fear, uncertainty and desire for routine, and provide practical tips and strategies for overcoming these obstacles. Routine is my biggest crutch! I rely on it to the point that when something new and exciting comes up I have a hard time wrapping my mind around it and changing my plans (despite knowing I'll love the outcome). Finding Adventure in Everyday Life: We discuss how adventure doesn't mean traveling far and can be found in everyday activities. We explore creative ways to inject a sense of adventure into routine tasks and familiar surroundings. We give ourselves a precious gift by opening up to the richness of an adventure filled life.

We're a week away from Thanksgiving and it's a wonderful time to be thankful, grateful and surrounded by the people we love...right? In theory, yes, but that's not always how coming together for the holidays FEELS. Ram Dass (one of my favorite spiritual teachers) said "If you think you're enlightened, try spending a week with your family". While in our own day to day lives we see ourselves growing, expanding and thriving, in the eyes of our family members-we can be viewed in a different light than we'd prefer.
There's the typical questions about when you'll get a boyfriend, when you'll get married, when you'll have a baby, when you'll quit this, or start that. While they're all coming from a meaningful place, they can feel like judgements, attacks and criticism. So for the askers-I recommend finding broader, less intrusive questions-like what was your favorite thing about this past year, or what are you most looking forward to next year? Zoom out and respect the setting and boundaries of the askee. They'll thank you for it! And if you're on the receiving end of the questions, keep in mind that you get to choose how to respond. Defensiveness and anger will leave you feeling drained and guilty. Keep in mind that you can have a plan-like invite the family member to call you tomorrow to discuss private matters as opposed to discussing them in front of your whole fam!
I've included some journaling prompts to fill your cup and align you with your highest good in action leading into the holiday season!
What's most important to you in your life right now?
What are you particularly good at?
What are your greatest strengths?
When are you most engaged?
How will you leave your mark on the world?

This week we're talking to Randee Prince-Admissions Manager and Alumni at Ripple Ranch Recovery Center. Just a few years ago Randee was on the other side of the desk, checking into the treatment that would change the trajectory of her life. She found herself being treated not only for substance abuse, but mental health as well, something often unaddressed in rehab. Focusing on individualized treatment is something this center does different.
Randee talks about the benefits of treatment, recovery and following through with a program in early sobriety. There's something special about helping another person who's standing exactly where you stood find their way out of the dark. Randee gets to live that-being on the front lines at the recovery center in Comal County, TX. She answers the call that she herself made. Recovery has a beautiful way of bringing us full circle. Listen in to hear Randee share her experience, strength and hope! She is proof-WE DO RECOVER!!

Research says that although we are all authentic human beings, we are very much impacted, motivated, and driven by our environment. The 5 people you spend the most time with shape who you are. Your conversations dominate your attention. Take a look at what the topic of conversation is in your close friend group. Are you guys discussing what you're working on, the goals you're setting, the challenges you're facing? Or are you talking about other people? Are you talking about how wasted you got, how much you drank, the money you spent, etc? Who you surround yourself with determines where your attention goes.
Tony Robbins says "The only thing that will change your life, change your business, change your relationship, is that you must raise your standards." Surround yourself with people who lift you up, lend you knowledge and help you learn from your mistakes. If you keep messing up and making choices that keep you stuck-and the people around you help you make excuses why that's acceptable/okay/normal/no big deal, you need a new tribe.
The people you surround yourself with influence your mood, how you view the world and the expectations you have of yourself. In this episode we do get into How to choose the right people?
You don't look to couples getting divorced to find out how to strengthen your marriage. You don't go to bakeries to find people to support your fitness and nutrition goals. You don't go to the welfare office looking for inspiration to start a new business. I think you get my point. Who you surround yourself with impacts who you are.
Let go of/limit negative relationships. People who frequently complain, talk about how much they hate this or that or them, who assume the worst and just have a negative outlook or opinion of life, of you or of themselves are not the people you want around you, unless you want to model their outlook and topics.
Identify positive people. Smart people-especially people smarter than you, hard workers, dreamers and visionaries as well as positive thinkers are all people you will benefit from surrounding yourself with.
Join professional groups. Both online and in person, there are groups available to you that are filled with people doing what you want to do, living like you want to live and have the answers to how, where and what it takes to get there.
Get outside your comfort zone. All growth starts at the end of your comfort zone.
Confucious said "If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room". If the people you spend most of your time with aren't working on themselves, learning, growing and building others up along the way, chances are pretty good that neither are you.

This week's guest is no stranger to suffering. Derek Januszweski didn't get sober the easy way. Not many of us do. He shares insight into the boy who suffered from neglect and unimaginable abuse from his own family's addiction. He then tells us what happened when that abused and traumatized boy got married and had a family of his own. Genetics, trauma, abuse cycles, and addiction all go hand in hand and paint the picture of a lonely pain-filled life.
As per usual on this show- those that make it out of the darkness have an incredible story to tell. Their very own personal how to live a meaningful life after crawling out of hell on earth story. Derek's is extra special. He shares how he came to The Medicine, what it does, who it's for, how it helps and what it is, in this telling episode of finding purpose, meaning and miracles on the road to recovering.

Have you ever heard the expression It's okay to not be okay? I think we all have, I know I've said it...ALOT. I'm pretty sure that's something I've said to reassure someone when I'm okay and they're not. While very true, it's also really hard to fathom when you're the one who's not okay! I've gotta tell you-I'm not okay. There, I said it. I'm struggling. I'm having a really hard time human-ing right now.
There's always alot going on in life. The earth continues to spin perfectly regardless of my feelings and experiences. I normally do a great job at rolling with the punches. Practicing equanimity and looking at life through the eyes of love are my new baseline. Despite some external challenges I felt ready to quit vaping a week ago and let me tell you....I've been leveled mentally and emotionally.
I forgot the struggle of fighting against what my body and mind are telling me I NEED, when I know I do not. Chemical addiction is rough. Mental fog, forgetfulness, irritability, emotional rollercoasters and so much more has been my reality this past week. Me trying to control my quitting experience couldn't prevent these side effects, despite using nicotine patches as well as a zero nicotine vape replacement. My knowledge that I'll get through this was irrelevant. Knowing better doesn't help me feel better.
I've been criticized, judged, belittled, questioned and bullied relentlessly this week. By myself. I've been so hateful to myself for struggling, for being new at things I'm learning, for being emotional, for not being perfect. I would never treat someone I love that way. So, when the thoughts about myself come in I ask myself if I'd talk to Candy that way, or my mom, or anyone-and the answer is always HELL NO!!
If you're quitting something, struggling or just having an overall hard time and you're not OK, I'm here to remind you that it's ok, and you can start by treating yourself like someone you love. Loving kindness and compassion can be our self prescribed medicine.

Calling all my current and former people-pleasers!!! How do you feel at the thought of being the "bad guy" in other people's eyes? Do you recoil and cringe at the thought? I did. I sometimes still do. The thought of my side of the story not being heard before an opinion is formed about me is uncomfortable. Speaking the unwelcome or inconvenient truth makes me squirm. My fight or flight is triggered and I often choose to avoid saying anything that would make people dislike me.
Here's the problem with that...I stay squirming and uncomfortable. When I choose to hold things in or attempt to people please I abandon myself. Everytime. I tell myself that you can't be trusted with the truth, or even worse-that I can't. When I do that I tell myself that my value and integrity aren't as important as your opinion of me. I'm done with that.
Welcome to my "bad guy" era. I am stepping into a new phase of life. I'm now willing to let people think what they choose without trying to convince them otherwise. I'm not convincing people that I'm right, I'm not oversharing, overexplaining or overextending. How you receive me is not up to me. I've realized that I have values, that they are important to me, and that some people won't understand that. I'm willing to be misunderstood. I'm willing to be disliked if it means being honest and living in my truth.
Being kind doesn't always mean being nice. Sometimes the kind thing is the truth and sometimes the truth isn't pretty or nice. Sometimes the truth hurts. But the truth is always the right answer. I'm not talking about BRUTAL honesty. I'm talking about leading with love. Loving someone enough to say the hard things. I've had a hard time with this but a new era has dawned. I'm so thankful you're along for the ride!!

When I first got sober I had no clue how I was going to get through a day without drinking after detox. I didn't know how I was going to get through a bartending shift either. I was TERRIFIED. One thing I did know was that I wasn't going to be ashamed or embarrassed of my decision to stop drinking-just like I had no shame in my drinking/shit-show game.
I told everyone I quit. Not to brag. Not to explain away my previous behavior. It created both a support system as well as a safety net. My regulars knew I wasn't drinking. They'd ask about my day count and cheer me on (mostly). My bosses definitely knew. I needed to be able to explain why a normal situation felt completely unmanageable without my emotional support vodka. All the bartenders at the bars I went to knew. I didn't want any places where I could hide and pretend I wasn't on the most intense emotional ride of my life. In short, I told EVERYONE. Anyone who'd listen. I'd answer questions. I'd share what I was going through. I was an over-emotional open book.
Here's what that did...it built up my confidence in myself. I continued to say-I Quit, I Don't Drink Anymore, I'm Sober, I'm In Recovery, I'm on Day....I was telling myself each time I told someone else. And it was the truth!! I have never been anonymous because people need to know that there is another way. I needed to know. I'm here shining this light into the dark and letting you know-there's nothing shameful about recovery!! It's not embarrassing. You're not a quitter. You absolutely can get through this!!

I wanted to call this episode I'm not an asshole-I'm just overwhelmed but....ya know-the algorithm...Are you overwhelmed? Stressed? Doing too much? I know I am, and I know I'm not the only one. Between work, relationships/friendships, schedules, money, health, the news-the list could go on forever! It's been years since I've regularly watched the news, but even 10 minutes of it leaves me feeling heavy! So there are endless causes of overwhelm, which result in burnout, anger, fear, frustration, sadness, short tempers, harsh words and many other unpleasant consequences.
So are we bound to this feeling and experience? Are we assholes throwing tantrums? Is this just the way it is, or is there something we can do about it? In this episode I share my strategies to cope with and unload the weight of the world on my shoulders. Some of them include figuring out why I'm overwhelmed and looking at what I'm trying to control, accepting and acknowledging how I'm feeling, practicing mindfulness and meditation as well as doing less. This episode is packed with tools to unload your unnecessary burdens TODAY!

Why write my own eulogy? I have no plans to leave this planet anytime soon, but I am keenly aware that it IS inevitable. There will come a day I will no longer be here, so I wonder...What will I be remembered for? What will be my life's legacy? Matthew McConaughey said we're writing our resume for our eulogy right now with our present words and actions and it got me thinking...What would mine be? What has my story been up to this point? Do I love it? Is it true? Is it what I want it to be? What do I want it to be from here?
I agree with Matty-we should all think about what our eulogy will be-so I took a couple hours and I wrote mine. I encourage you to do the same. I included family, education, career, hobbies and special interests and special accomplishments. I looked at the parts I don't "love". I let myself be proud of the things I have accomplished.
Then I wondered, What do I want this to look like in another 20 years? What would I regret not going after or including in my life's work? What does my heart long to do that I haven't applied myself to yet? I'm going to write my future eulogy and see how that looks different.
What does this have to do with recovery? I'm glad I asked...it gives you an opportunity to look at milestones reached, chapters closed and opened. It's good evidence of your ability to get through 100% of the struggles and obstacles you face. It reminds you of your ability to rebuild, overcome and start again. You've got this!

Do you struggle with self doubt? I think it's safe to say we all have from time to time. But what about that big quiet self-doubt that lives in your head and plays the same old story on repeat day after day, year after year??? I think you know what I'm talking about. It tells you "you can't start the business", "you're too old to go back to school", "other people are much more qualified than you are", "no one will listen if I start a podcast" or my person (least) favorite-"Bartending is the only way I can afford to pay my bills". You know the story that lives in you.
What about the dream that the doubt stifles? What does that look like? What would that feel like if you took the crazy chance and started today anyway? Would you wake up excited to go to work, or learn or create? How would your relationships improve if you GOT to do what you wanted instead of doing what you HAVE to do? Can you picture your quality of life in general without the dark cloud of self-doubt telling you why you can't have that? I can and it's a beautiful picture!!
Self-doubt isn't pointless...on the outside it's actually keeping you safe. It's keeping you comfortable. It's fear. The unknown is TERRIFYING. The idea of unlimited possibilities sounds amazing in theory, but in reality, it's downright scary. If I can do anything, go anywhere and be any version of myself I choose, what if I fail? What if I don't get to where I want to be? What if I let people down?
Here's a better question-what if you stay the same? Are you working toward where you want to be in a week? What about if a month? Do you want to be here in a year? What about 5 years? 10? If you're not working on your goals, you're going to keep getting what you have. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. If you start today, by next week-you're a week in, stead of on the fence peering into what could be. I believe in you. I believe in me. Just start. You're self-doubt is lying to you. It's time to be all you can be sweetheart.

I've learned a whole lot in the last 1000 days without a drink or drug!! I wanted to list 1000 things but...that would take awhile. Here I share the main points that come to mind. I made a decision. I stuck to it. I made it the most important thing in my whole world. It led me to a relationship with God. Contact with a higher power changed the game. I went from believing to KNOWING that the Universe has my back. Spirit is in fact guiding me. I have the Source of all creation coursing through me and guiding me as intuition when I slow down enough to listen. I learned to trust myself. I learned to say NO. I learned to mean it. I learned to set boundaries and enforce them not with brute strength, but with loving kindness for myself first. I embraced kindness as a way to cope. I embraced the work as a way of life and a design for living. I found a support system, defined it and used it when I needed support. I take extra special care of my mental and emotional well being. I pursue my purpose and passion daily. I practice gratitude and appreciation for my life all day everyday. I offer advice, support and coaching to others that want to change whenever possible-and I also still learn the hard way that consequences and pain are what led me to the willingness to change-and I need to give others the opportunity to find their own gift of desperation instead of attempting to save and rescue. I choose softness over survival. I never fail because I refuse to stay down. I get to live a beautiful magic filled life and it all started with the decision to put down the drink. One moment at a time, one day at a time, one week, one month, year, 2 years and today-1000 days!! It just keeps getting better. I love who I am and the life I'm so blessed to live. We do recover. It works if you work it. You're worth it. It's worth it. There's no wrong way to recover. Change your thoughts, change your life.

This is the final episode of our Sober Summer Series!! What's the difference between sobriety and recovery? Aren't they the same thing? I used to think so...but they are very different indeed. Sobriety is only the beginning-abstinence from a harmful or addictive substance or behavior. Living a life free of alcohol or substance abuse. That's a great start, but what is recovery? For me, recovery means FREEDOM. Freedom from the desire, compulsion, obsession, behaviors, seeking, escaping, misery and destruction. Recovery is defined as: a return to a normal state of health, mind or strength (whatever "normal" is), the action or process of regaining possession or control of something stolen or lost. Both of those ring true to me. Recovery is getting yourSELF back. Not to the way you were before, but the you that you always had the potential to be. You don't have to be sober to get started in recovery. You can start where you are and find your very own way through and out of the suffering. No one can make you, or do it for you. But the good news is-when you really want it-we're here waiting to welcome you!! Recovery gave me a life better than any life I could've prayed for and with it-ANYTHING is possible!! We do recover!

I did a home workout today! Why does that matter? Because I've been wanting to start for quite awhile. I've been saving workouts. I've cleared my space. I have delicious healthy food ready to be prepped. But I haven't taken any actual action. This can be similar to entering recovery. You think about it, read about, but you just don't find a good time to get going. It's similar in alot of ways actually.
Throughout my 20's fitness was my passion. I entered competitions, boxed, ran a 1/2 marathon and trained jiu jitsu. I read articles, had inspo pics all around my space, made friends with similar goals and interests and went all in (when I wasn't getting blackout drunk, of course).
Eventually drinking took the front seat and my motivation dwindled. I got farther and farther away from fitness and comfier in my comfort zone. Now that I'm sober and feeling happy and healthy mentally and emotionally, the pull to feel good physically is getting louder by the day. I've maintained a slim shape into my late 30's despite eating WHATEVER I want WHENEVER I want it. I'm thankful for that. But I don't feel good. I know I'm not taking care of my body. And I'm ready to do something about it. Join me as I sing my song of recovery-today-I'm recovering my physical health!

Are you holding out on your happiness? What are you waiting for? Is your happiness somewhere in the future rooted in some other place, time or event? Mine was. I moved to Texas 1 year ago and while I enjoy it and love my life with my husband, I held out on settling in. My mind told me-we could move at any moment, no need to get a bunch of furniture you'll have to move again. I said Texas is ok, but I can't wait to get back to Washington-where we'd moved from. I'm here to tell you that coming back to WA for a visit has been incredible in more ways than one. I thought I'd get here and wouldn't want to leave. I thought there was some magic in the cold water and the trees that would click in my spirit. It didn't. Reality clicked. I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be. And I'm ready to accept and embrace it fully. But where to start? By being where you're at. Ram Das said BE HERE NOW.
What you do today will impact your tomorrow, so do your best today. But don't waste this precious day imagining or worrying about what was or will be. Today is a gift. Each moment is sacred. Be here now. Now here be. 4 tips to be happy today in the here and now and embrace your life as it is: 1. Focus on now, notice surrounding, your breath, where your body is. 2. Smile, appreciate the little things and give thanks. 3. Service, random acts of kindness and compliments. 4. This week I met with my beautiful friend to talk about recovery. As expected, we talked about so much more. Because recovery is so much more than quitting drugs and or alcohol. For many of us that is only a starting point, the jumping off place, propelling us into who we will become. That was the case for Elly. She shares her story of entering rehab while facing felony charges and possible incarceration. In rehab she was given some gifts that continue to influence and support her life today-6 years later. Rehab offered structure and routine. It also offered 12 step meetings that she continued and utilized to deepen her understanding and uncovering of herself. Rehab also offered the gift of YOGA. Recovery through yoga. And that spoke to her in a deep and profound way. So much so that she is now a yoga teacher and opening her very own studio in the very near future! When I asked about her drinking days, she says-Dude-you have no idea!! She tells us that your WHY is your anchor as you drift in the sea of life. Forgiveness is empowerment. Structure informs function. We discuss the difference between boundaries and barriers. She tells us how yoga taught her to feel safe in her body. She offers us the golden egg-What is this moment offering me? Listen in to this beautiful spirit as she shares her experience, strength and HOPE!!

What does Unshakeable mean? Lacking the ability to be shook-of course! (Of belief, feeling or opinion) strongly felt and unable to be changed. Unable to be disputed or questioned. That's more like it. In this episode I share where I am firmly grounded in my foundation, Unshakeable, and ask you to reflect and ask yourself the same. My recovery, sobriety, marriage and faith are unshakeable. They are because I made a decision to do whatever it takes. I make the same decision every day. I do things daily to nourish, support and encourage these things. There are no doubts, what if's or questions when it comes to these things. In other areas I'm not so sure, but these core things I can be certain of. I will not falter or fail. And you don't have to either.

It is what it is, is a harsh sounding statement in my opinion. Enter EQUANIMITY. It means mental calmness, composure and evenness of temper, especially in a difficult situation. It means giving in to what is-instead of giving up. It's the result of compassion, generosity, lovingkindness and forgiveness. It means radical acceptance. It means I can be present for this. It's not indifference. It's not I don't care either way. It is the practice of being ok no matter what's going on around you. Episode includes literature reading from Recovery Dharma as well as AA Big Book. Acceptance is the answer.

What do you do when you feel off center? Off the beam? Out of sort? In the dark? I've been experiencing some of these feelings lately and I can tell you it isn't pleasant. I can also share that getting back to the basics of what led me out of the dark in the beginning of my recovery journey absolutely helps!! Join me as I open up about where I'm at, what I'm experiencing and what exactly I'm doing about it and when.
What does it mean to "clean up your side of the street"? This talk is a big part of it for me. Taking right action regardless of what others do or say. Forgiving without an apology because I'm not benefiting from carrying the burden of anger or resentment. I discuss the difference between an apology and an amends. One is a regretful acknowledgment while another is changed behavior. Forgiving ourselves is freeing, but we can't fix what we won't face. Love yourself where you are and where you've been. We don't HAVE to punish ourselves. We can do better and release our judgements of past actions. That applies to ourselves and to others. Meet yourself through the eyes of lovingkindness and compassion and see a whole new person!
In this episode we briefly discuss the trip that is aging and realizing I don't have anything figured out. I encourage you to look at yourself as someone you love and discuss the practice of self love. Let's talk about feelings. Feelings are valid. Everyone has them. But feelings aren't facts. They're more of a compass than anything. Feeling is healing. I encourage you to allow yourself to feel ALL your feelings and question what, why, where etc. This too shall pass. All feelings pass eventually-even the good ones. We go over being where you're at. Presence, love and light are our assets.

Today we're asking the question-why is alcohol a great connector? Why do we always drink with certain people (family/friends)? Have you ever been told you should slow down your drinking, or get your shit together but struggled to find what the magical acceptable/appropriate amount actually was? I know I did. Then when I would decided to take a break I'd be met with taunting, teasing and bets on how long it would take for me to fail. I talk to you about the stigma behind NOT drinking, taking a break or stopping for good. I go over the definitions of a couple different types of drinkers to get to the question of why we drink socially. I question the social standard that's placed on drinking and encourage you to help me set a new one. This episode is for the light/occasional drinker all the way to the heavy drinker. I give examples and suggestions on how to address social gatherings and maintain your sobriety as well as what to expect.
In this episode we talk all things recovery with happiness coordinator and certified life coach Dane Walthers! Dane has been living a life full of adventure and personal development for well over 2 decades. During that time he has chosen to live a sober life while touching the lives of humans of all ages. With his love for teaching flourishing over the years, he has gone from coaching high school boxing teams in Georgia, teaching DRUG education in Minnesota, teaching tourists how to surf the waves in Peru to now impacting the world of alcohol with a NEW way of combating the urge to drink. He has traveled to 10 countries, backpacked through 3 of them. He has run marathons and triathlons. He has kayaked 3 class 3 rapids in the waters of Virginia, Colorado and Tennessee, Bunjee jumped off a crane in South Carolina, Skydived the skies of Wisconsin and walked across fire in his now home state of Florida. His love for rock climbing had him seeing gorgeous sights in three different states and his new found love for cycling has him maneuvering the streets of Florida, traveling an average of 400 miles a month on his Trek Bike. His love for boxing won him the Gold at the Georgia games and he had the privilege of boxing the Golden Gloves. And if that wasn't enough life experience, he has owned and refurbished 5 houses while raising two children with his then wife and now adding one step child to his now life partner, Sabrina Victoria.
Dane knows what it's like to come home exhausted after a long day at work and have that urge to drink, even if you triple promised yourself you wouldn't tonight. He goes against the grain of labeling his clients as alcoholics, and instead educates his clients on the inner workings of the alcohol industry and the inner workings of the human mind. His techniques are truly unique and always come from a place of understanding and compassion.

What can we cover in just over 30 minutes? ALOT! In episode 21 I provide an exciting life update-a new job, complete with a structured schedule and early hours. I read a meditation card out of the Gabby Bernstein-The Universe Has Your Back deck and it's spot on!! Surrender so the Universe can do it's thing is todays message. Let Go & Let God. I reiterate that others peoples opinions of you are none of your business. Speak your truth and let people get what they can from it. I talk about listening. The importance of finding your tribe. Taking action. Clearing the inner clutter and embracing your inner light. Finding your thing. Doing your thing. Letting go of things outside your control.
This week we're asking the question-What's in your way? What does your ideal life look like? If your problem was completely solved, how would your world be different? What would you be doing different? Let's dive into this!! I also ask-where is your joy? Where do you find it? I give a few examples of where to look but the possibilities are endless!! Our mind can be a prison-or it can set us free!! You'll be amazed how different the world looks if you're willing to look at it from a different perspective. We are recovering from life here, so part of that entails getting out of our own way. How do we do that? Do we really have a choice in how we see the world? Absolutely YES! Listen in and join me as we answer these questions and investigate our thoughts and stories.
This week I talk to y'all about quitting drinking. So many of us try, fail, start over, promise tomorrow, next time, next week, after this event, holiday-the list goes on and on. When I actually quit I WANTED to. A lot of us need to, but when you want to quit it makes the process far less painful. So, we have to make a decision-to get honest with ourselves about our relationship with alcohol (or vaping, shopping, gambling, social media, video games, etc). Are we happy with this relationship? Are we suffering internal or external consequences from engaging in this behavior? Once we pick a side of the fence we make a decision. I don't want to do this anymore. I won't do this anymore. I'm not doing this anymore. Some may need help/treatment to aide in following through with this decision, and there's no wrong way! Once you've made the decision-you need a plan!! What are you going to do with all your free time? What are you going to do with thoughts and feelings that you used to escape from? What have you been putting off that you can finally begin? I share recovery modalities, sober activities and outlets and talk about meditation, fitness and mind over matter.
This week we talk to my dear friend Kawai Fountain on the podcast. Newly sober wife, bartender and bonus mom to 3 amazing littles, she tells us what life and recovery looks like from her lens. What do teeth and taxes have to do with recovery?? They are things that I neglected and avoided. They are things I didn't deal with until I had no other choice. Let's be honest-they both can be really scary topics!! So is the idea of dealing with a drinking problem before it deals with you. In this episode I face my fear of using my voice and go SOLO. I have been going through an internal transformation in my own recovery-one that I'm opening up about with you here. It's a vulnerable one, and may very well create some push-back, but listen in with an open heart and mind as I share my truth from a new shifting perspective.
We're talking with Kelly Siegel this week! Kelly is the author of Harder Than Life: Overcoming Poverty, Addiction, and Violence, and he hosts the Harder Than Life podcast as well! You'll hear the struggles of him detoxing himself (I don't recommend this-IT CAN KILL YOU), and most importantly, facing the traumas that his alcohol use was covering up. We discuss the tools, routines and lifestyle changes that have proven successful for Kelly to remain alcohol free for over 4 years! We talk therapy-and y'all know I appreciate men telling men they go to therapy!!! There's no one right way to recover. In this episode you'll hear how Kelly does it, and what he offers to those still struggling.

Today we talk with mom, fiance and entrepreneur Stacy Rapp. Hear her story of how she rose to the top of an MLM company and began to lose herself in the process. Battling depression and anxiety after surviving the tragic Route 91 tragedy, while encouraging, motivating and leading others in a very public way takes it's toll. She knew deep inside that it was time to leave the company that she'd poured herself into and grew up in. Many of us are faced with these forks in the road in our everyday lives. What do we do? Tell ourselves the story that we can't leave, let the fear of the unknown keep us feeling stuck...or do we get uncomfortable and trust what our inner voice is telling us? In this episode Stacy tells us what it was like walking away from the money, the accolades and relationships to choose to take care of her mental and emotional health. She shares the tools she uses and tells us the most important lessons-be open for growth, be honest with yourself, be authentic and have your OWN relationship with God. Her kindness and love are apparent and her journey is admirable. I'm proud of her for choosing herself!!

This week we talk with Leslie Kissling. Recovering alcoholic, animal enthusiast, and currently working to attain her LCDC. Leslie has walked quite a road leading up to living one day at a time. Being the youngest of 12 in a Catholic family, she realized in high school that she's gay, followed by the tragic murder of her sister. It's hard enough finding yourself in those transformative years, but this girl sought structure and joined the Air Force. She describes herself as a throw the cap away drinker...she wouldn't be needing it. She always felt that she had something to prove and was dying for acceptance. She pursued and was successful in her career in journalism broadcasting, and even had the opportunity to present a screenplay to Sony! But as many of us experience, drinking always came first. She was sentenced to a 2 year prison sentence after her 4th DWI and did end up serving 11 months. She found AA and a sponsor before serving her sentence and held AA meetings in the dorms while facing even more of life's challenges. She says prison saved her from herself, when her mother passed while she was incarcerated. God really shook up her snowglobe!! Today she works with animals, while completing required hours to attain her LCDC to help fellow addicts and alcoholics still suffering. She's a true inspiration and a joy to talk to!! Enjoy!!
