Welcome to the Untangled Podcast. My name is Mack, I am a 3rd year Neuroscience student at Dalhousie University, and the host of the Untangled Podcast. The first segment of the Untangled Podcast furthers the discussion on concussions. Through this podcast we hope to untangle the ins and outs of brain injury and help educate listeners.
Dr. Daniel Rafie is Board certified in Neurology and Traumatic Brain Injury Medicine and completed fellowship training in Sports Neurology. Dr. Rafie is also the host of the UCLA BrainSPORT podcast, where he discusses topics around brain health, brain injury, and brain performance.
Dr. Alan Pearce is neurophysiologist from Australia with a research focus on sports-related concussions.
His research focuses on acute phase post-concussion as well as mental health and neurological impairment. In this episode Dr. Pearce discusses what the concussion protocol is like in Australia, as well as his involvement with the world’s first CTE diagnosis in a female athelte.

Welcome back to the Untangled Podcast. We are excited to welcome Dr. Steven Broglio to the podcast. Dr. Broglio is the Director of the University of Michigan Concussion Center as well as the Director of the NeuroTrama Research Laboratory. Dr. Broglio is also a professor in neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Michigan. In these roles at the University of Michigan, Dr. Broglio oversees clinical care, educational outreach and research aimed at fundamental questions on concussion, including prevention, identification, diagnosis management and outcomes.
Welcome back to the Untangled Podcast. We are excited to welcome Dr. Elizabeth Teel to the podcast. Dr. Teel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Kinesiology and Applied Physiology Program. Dr. Teel’s research interests involve the physiological and clinical outcomes in children and adults with concussion, specifically looking at better injury identification, promoting recovery, and enhancing quality of life. In her research, Dr. Teel uses electroencephalography (aka EEG) to enhance concussion diagnosis and prognosis.
We are excited to welcome Dr. Micheal Stuart, from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Stuart is an Orthopedic Surgeon, as well as a Physician focusing on sports safety, including concussion prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Dr. Stuart also serves as the Chief Medical Officer for USA Hockey, and Chair of the Division of Sports Medicine at the Mayo Clinic.

Welcome to Episode 7 of the Untangled Podcast. We are excited to welcome Dr. Micheal Cinelli, a Professor at Wilfred Laurier University. Dr. Cinelli received his PhD in Kinesiology with a specialization in Behavioral and Cognitive Neural Science from the University of Waterloo. Now as an Associate Professor in Kinesiology and Physical Education at Laurier, Dr. Cinelli’s research focuses on perception-action integration, obstacle avoidance, and balance control in concussions.

Welcome to episode 4 of the Untangled Podcast. In this episode we are excited to welcome Dr. Chantel Debert, an academic physiatrist from the University of Calgary. Dr. Debert works in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, in the division of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Calgary and is also a member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. Dr. Debert leads the Brain Neurorehabilitation Lab at the University of Calgary, where their research focuses on pathophysiology, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of brian injury. Dr. Debert gives us insight into many of the groundbreaking topics her lab researches, such as fluid biomarkers, transcranial magnetic stimulations, and other neuroimaging techniques. In episode 2 of the Untangled Podcast we meet with Dr. John Leddy. Dr. Leddy is a primary care sports medicine physician, and the Director of the Concussion Management Clinic at the University of Buffalo. In this episode, Dr. Leddy educates us on the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test. Dr. Leddy was one of the key developers of this concussion test, which is an exercise-based test that helps doctors understand when athletes can return to sport following a concussion.
