This week the Madcaps continue on their list of parks and places that have cabins for rent in Florida. Sometimes, dealing with the heat while camping and lugging around a ton of gear isn't for everyone. Some want to enjoy what the park has to offer, then retire to a climate-controlled space with a comfortable bed. Well, there are just over 20 Florida State Parks that offer cabins with varying amenities from bunkhouses to modern buildings, these parks are worth checking out. The cabins can be quite affordable and are in demand, so plan your visit well in advance!

Many remember the surprise attempts to develop our Florida State Parks last August. Some lawmakers have put forth bills that prevent that from happening again, yet there are loopholes that could have us defending our state parks all over again in the future. As the Manatee Biologist for Save the Manatee Club, Tiare 'TJ' Fridrich works to protect manatees and their aquatic habitats by collaborating with stakeholders statewide, advocating for stronger protections at all government levels, leveraging the best available science to guide conservation efforts and improve management strategies, and by addressing gaps in data collection efforts and public education. TJ leads the Guardian Guides Program, a voluntary training program for manatee ecotourism operators that promotes manatee stewardship and aims to minimize disturbances from commercial manatee-viewing activities while encouraging education and conservation. TJ holds a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from the University of Rhode Island and a Master of Professional Science in Tropical Marine Ecosystem Management from the University of Miami.

Before joining the Times in 2023, Chesnes covered environmental issues for Treasure Coast Newspapers and the USA Today network, reporting on Lake Okeechobee, the Indian River Lagoon and Florida’s Everglades. He’s a 2023 journalism fellow at Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy and a recipient of several environmental writing awards. He studied both journalism and sustainability at the University of Florida and is licensed to fly drones.

Just a few days ago plans to develop a few Florida State Parks were uncovered and made public. The plans where uncharacteristic of the Florida State Park mission of resource based recreation. Massive hotels, golf courses, pickleball courts, and more were planned and in some circumstances would drastically alter some of the park's habitats. In this episode, the Madcaps are joined by Casey Darling Kniffinn the Conservation Policy Director for the Florida Wildlife Federation discuss the concept plans for nine Florida State Parks and the consequences of completing such developments as well as offer some suggestions for those who want to oppose the development plans.

Casey is the Conservation Policy Director for the Florida Wildlife Federation and previously served as the Advocacy Coordinator for Florida Oceanographic Society. She earned a B.S. degree in Biology from Florida State University and a M.S. degree in Marine Biology at the College of Charleston. Casey serves on the Friends of the Everglades Science and Policy committee as well as the Young Friends committee. She is the co-lead of the River Kidz, a youth advocacy group focused on clean water in the St. Lucie Estuary and Indian River Lagoon and is a Rivers Coalition board member. She is passionate about environmental policy, advocacy, and science along with a commitment to protecting Florida’s diverse ecosystems. Born and raised in Florida, she enjoys snorkeling, paddling, and hiking with her family in Hobe Sound.

This week the Madcaps were treated to a hike through Split Oak Forest with the President of the Friends of Split Oak Forest, Valerie Anderson. Afterwards, we recorded an episode right at Split Oak and Valerie outlined the current struggle to protect a conservation property that was originally set aside for Gopher Tortoise Habitat to mitigate the almost 100,000 killed during development with Florida's "Pay to Pave" program as well as to offset the effects of development that were occurring in that area in the 80s and early 90s.
Valerie outlines the importance of the habitat at Split Oak Forest and forewarns about the feeble legal protections that conservation lands in Florida have.

From the Gulf of Mexico to the St Johns River is the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway., which was once planned to be the Cross Florida Barge Canal. The park is named after the famed environmental activist who opposed the canal and was instrumental in getting it deauthorized. The barge canal was about thirty percent complete when construction ceased. Now it is a 110-mile linear state park.

Charles Bronson State Forest is located near Christmas, Florida has trails and camping. it also borders a number of other important conservation areas such as Orlando Wetlands Park and Little Big Econ State Forest. One of the more notable trails is the Joshua Creek Trail Loop which is a bit longer than nine miles, it also traverses a number of different habitats.

In the 1950s the Florida Park Service opened a number of Florida State Parks that were segregated. Some were turned over to other land managers to continue to be recreation areas, and others are still Florida State Parks today. One segregated park faded into history as it was on borrowed land and was returned to its original land manager a military base called Camp Blanding. There it was unknown to all but a few as the infrastructure of the park started to decay. A local historian, Robert Dews stumbled across some information and led an effort to get the area a historical marker recognizing the park.
In this episode we discuss a hike we took with Robert to the remains of Magnolia Lake State Park and we discuss a new reroute of the Florida National Scenic Trail as well.

Cathy Salustri earned her master’s degree in Florida Studies from the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, which, to those who know her, is no great surprise, given her intense passion for all things Florida. Her first book, Backroads of Paradise (UPF, 2016), chronicles Cathy’s more-than-5,000 mile-road trip along Florida’s backroads as she sought forgotten and under-appreciated Florida. Not content to see Florida from a car, she also boats, sails, kayaks, paddleboards, hikes, and bikes the Sunshine State. Cathy writes and speaks (she calls it Florida-splaining) about Florida for a living from her home in Gulfport, Florida, which she shares with her hound dogs, cats, her husband Barry, and more than a few brown anoles who valiantly protect her houseplants from danger. Cathy, Barry, and the dogs leave the cats and anoles to their own devices as they explore Florida in their travel trailer.

The Tomoka Basin is between Ormond and Flagler Beach and the parks in that area are mostly coastal. A lot of Florida History is in this area from the initial Spanish expeditions to the Seminole Wars. Today we cover Tomoka State Park, Addison Blockhouse, Bulow State Park, The Fairchild Oak, and Gamble Rodgers State Park.

Their radio shows have won two Gold and one Silver Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism awards. Elizabeth recently retired after 21 years as Travel Editor of Westways magazine (circ. 4 million). The magazine won seven Lowell Thomas awards during her tenure, and she continues to write and edit for Westways and AAA Explorer.

This week the Madcaps discuss one of the most rewarding adventures we have embarked on: Visiting state parks and getting passport book stamps. The Florida State Parks have sold passport books that have a separate page for each of the 175 parks. You can visit the different state parks and have the pages stamped with individual stamps for each park. The availability of the passport books is dwindling If you are having trouble finding one, fear not! We go over a temporary workaround so you can still collect stamps while visiting some of the best places Florida has to offer.

On this episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Linda Wilinski who is an avid conservation photographer.
Linda Wilinski is a conservation photographer with focus on freshwater springs.
She is a certified Florida Master Naturalist, attended Crealde’ School of Art and has won several prices along with exhibiting her photography throughout Florida.
Wilinski uses her art to tell stories of Florida’s incredible wildlife and advocate for its protection.
Living on the Rainbow River has enabled her to spend most of her free time kayaking, snorkeling,
and educating others about the importance of Florida’s springs. Her vision is to re-connect people with the outdoors, to bring awareness of Florida’s beauty as well as shedding light onto its hardships.
The purpose of her art is to encourage conservation.
Linda has formed a special bond with some of the local wildlife and is also known as “the otter whisperer”.

Paynes Prairie is Florida's first State Preserve. It is 23,000 acres full of wildlife such as gators, bison, horses, over 300 species of birds, and much more. The feature which makes it a wet prairie rather than a lake is the Alachua Sink where the water from the prairie flows into the Floridan Aquifer. In this episode, we talk about some of the more notable features and things to see as well as nearby Price's Scrub.
