Sumaia Khoury is a recent graduate of Biola University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences. Sumaia was also a valued student of the Torrey Honors College. She aims to attend medical school in the Fall of 2024. In this episode, we discuss the value of classical education as a part of medical studies. Additionally, we discuss the virtuous practice of medicine as opposed to a common way of practicing.

Brandon and Ty Watts planted Epiphany Church Brooklyn in 2016. Epiphany is "a multi-ethnic church plant in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, NY. [They] are a local church learning what it means to follow Jesus in a complex city." The Watts are a wonderful couple, and do a great job leading, teaching, and learning. They strive to bring a universal gospel to Brooklyn's particular culture.

Stan Ng was an engineering professor at Biola University and is now a teacher at Oaks Christian School. He is pursuing a PhD in Engineering, doing research involving machine learning in an educational environment. Willem suggested that we read some Plato to discuss in this episode. We read both the Euthyphro and the Apology, dealing with piety and the death of Socrates respectively. Diving into Plato allowed us to make comparisons to Christianity and ask the question, "What are the highest things?"

Today we have an amazing story from Cam Huelin. Cam was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in his senior of college at Biola University. Since the diagnosis, Cam underwent two major surgeries as well as chemo and radiation and has come out on the other side in remission. Miraculously, Cam's brain function has remained largely unimpaired outside of some minor difficulty with short-term memory.
It was a blessing to hear more about Cam's story and record it to share with you all. He is an amazingly strong young man and has made the most of his experience, learning valuable lessons in humility and faith. Please take the chance to learn from his infectious optimism and endurance.

Dr. Douglas Axe is the Maxwell Professor of Molecular Biology at Biola University. For years he has been researching the theory of Darwinian Evolution with results that indicate a failure in the model. Dr. Axe is a proponent of the idea of "Intelligent Design," and his book Undeniable: How Biology Confirms Our Intuition That Life is Designed contains his "common sensical" argument in favor of the idea. Dr. Axe coauthored another book, The Price of Panic: How the Tyranny of Experts Turned a Pandemic Into a Catastrophe, addressing the challenges of using science as a decision-making tool in high-pressure situations (particularly COVID-19). Dr. Axe is a great scientist and thinker, and it was a pleasure discussing his specialty with him.

Today Willem and I discuss the book "The Black Swan" by Nassim Taleb. This book was very impactful for Willem and helped him think through many scenarios in his own life. We talk a lot about risk-taking, unpredictability, and other ideas in mathematics and try to apply them to our everyday lives.

Willem Nielsen was my closest childhood friend. We grew up playing basketball together in New York City. Time has taken us down separate paths, but those paths have converged in a unique and unexpected way: a love for reading and philosophy.
