Less than 5 minutes to get you updated on the current fires burning around Colorado.

"Today is Wednesday June 23rd, 2021, and Northern Colorado has been covered in haze. So today, I’m covering wildfires. The thing is we never know how things will go overnight, but let’s see what we’ve got going on as of now.
There are 10 fires burning in the state. 2 are prescribed burns, 3 are more than 90% contained, the other 5 are what we are going to look at today. Plus a bonus look at a couple other fires in our neighbor states. Buckle in…. Because, forgive me for this one but... the heat is on.
Let’s check-in with the biggest flame we’ve got: The Oil Springs Fire. Situated 20 miles south of Rangely, lightning being the suspected cause, this fire is just shy of 12000 acres. As of 9:20pm it was listed at 11,933 acres with 0% containment. Active fire was observed today, meaning the fire followed where the wind led it. There are multiple road closures and evacuations with Red Flag warnings and fire restrictions in place across Rio Blanco County.
Next on the list of this blazing brigade we've got the Muddy Slide Fire, this one burning inside Routt county 18 miles west of Kremmling. The cause is still unknown. As of 9pm today, it is sitting at 4,000 acres 0% containment with mandatory evacuations in place. Stage one fire restrictions have been put in place for areas including Medicine Bow and Routt National Forests as well as Thunderbasin National Grassland.
Next up we’ve got the Sylvan Fire, Situated in white river national forest south of gypsum, north of aspen, weighing in at a close third at more than 3500 acres as of 7pm. This blaze is suspected to be caused by lightning but that is being investigated. Weather did help out the firefighters today, but things are expected to be hot, dry and windy tomorrow.
Over in Moffat county just shy of the Wyoming border 80 miles northwest of Craig is the aptly named West Fire. Yet another lightning suspect in this case. Covering 3100 acres, this blaze is 30% contained, but not…. Well it’s not out of the woods yet, thunderstorms with wild winds may not aid the fire crews in containment. A infrared flight from the Multi Mission Aircraft for updated acreage is expected in the morning.
Last on our colorado list is located in Garfield county, not too far south of the Oil Springs Fire, there is another possible lightning fire, The Cow Fire started on Monday and is sitting at just over 550 acres as of 5pm. Fire activity there was low today thanks to higher humidity and cloud cover.
AND in case you are wondering what’s going on just outside our borders here is a quick brief on what is impacting our air quality. To our immediate west in Utah, just Southeast of Moab, the Pack Creek fire is at 66% containment but 8900 acres, and to the south The Poso Fire in New Mexico’s San Juan Mountains is 55% contained at 2000 acres.
