Listen along as 2 people in their 20s who were apart of the High School Musical generation take on the task of reviewing every single Disney Channel Original Movie in chronological order.
If you had the chance to change your fate, would you? Oh wait, wrong Disney movie. But hopefully that clue was enough to let you listeners know that we’re kicking off 2008 on the DCOM train by discussing the wibbly wobbly timely wimey movie about 3 guys in snowsuits, Minutemen. Kate compares the minutemen’s disguises against Miley Stewart’s, Jake wonders why these guys talk about time travel so nonchalantly in public, and both of them take a stance against animal testing. They also celebrate the upcoming release of a movie they’ve been covering in news for years now, and reveal their rankings of DCOMs 61-70!This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: A fireworks apology, Japan talk, Theme park talk, Kates educational journey with monsters, An open invitation to Kenny Ortega, Learning things about writing movies, Where are the Minutemen Halloween costumes?, Corbin Bleu’s Disney channel commercial monopoly, DCOM parties, and Dinosaur. Summer… summer… summer. What time is it listeners? Why it’s time to work this out and get fabulous because it’s finally time for us to talk about the 2007 Kenny Ortega directed DCOM sequel masterpiece, High School Musical 2. Much like when we talked the first High School Musical we couldn’t do this one alone either, so we’ve brought in special guest Megan to help break down this movie song by song and scene by scene in what is our longest episode yet. Jake gives a special pride month lesson, Kate recalls her experience with DCOM trivia, Megan explains the special way she rewatched this movie, and all three discuss the layers this movie has as well as discuss the two characters with the biggest arch’s.This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Corbin Bleu jumping back in, August 17th 2007, The top 5 most successful DCOMs of all time, Zac Efron proving his vocals, HSMTMTS, Exams and locker usage, T as in…, All the time high school took from us, Sharpay influencing Barbie, Work stories, Sight-reading, Golf, and Andrew Garfield. Listeners, it is that time of year again, the time to celebrate the birth of one of your co-hosts. That’s right it is once again time to celebrate Jakes birthday by taking a pit stop from the DCOM train to discuss a non-Disney movie. So join us in the skies as we join the vikings by discussing the 2010 DreamWorks Animated film, How To Train Your Dragon. Jake gives Kate a quick history lesson about the How To Train Your Dragon franchise, Kate debated the merits of a dragon as a mode of transportation, and both of them discuss what it’s like when a book is adapted into a movie very very loosely. Once again thank you to all of you listeners who allow us to do special episodes like this for our special days. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Epic Universe inspiration, Almost Mario, DreamWorks Land, Rewatching things and finding new appreciation for different characters, Dragons and Dinosaurs, These are just dogs, A rival to the magic carpet, and Scholarly papers. We say this in the episode but just to reiterate Kate will be getting a makeup bonus episode at sometime this year because we had to skip her birthday episode last year due to the actors and writers strikes, so be on the lookout for that sometime in the future. Jake tries to solve the mystery of why this released 8 years after the first movie, Kate explains what engaged people should and shouldn’t do, and both of them admit to not being experts on sports involving boards. He was a boy who boxed, she was a girl who did double dutch, could I make it anymore obvious? Okay well maybe but honestly the double dutch should have given it away that it’s time for us to stretch and get the ropes swinging as we kick off 2007 on the DCOM train with the Corbin Bleu and Keke Palmer led hit Jump In! Jake apologizes for not crediting writers, Kate questions how valid the final freestyle performance is, and both of them find very easy connections between this DCOM’s story and ones that came before it, as well as answer a very big fan submitted DCOM question. Jake proposes a way to fix #MarnieGate, Kate revisits her issues with how college is portrayed in movies, and both of them pitch Halloweentown movies they actually want to watch over this. That’s right it’s time for us to discuss the iconic Kenny Ortega directed DCOM sequel from 2006, The Cheetah Girls 2!!! Though unlike the cheetah girls in this movie we were able to get the whole gang to focus and make this happen because we have returning special guest Liz to help us talk all things cheetahlicious and Barcelona. Alright listeners I hope you all did your essay assignment and turned them in, wait what’s this, why did someone turn in something that clearly isn’t an essay? If that didn’t give away that we’re watching the 2006 Panabaker sister double feature DCOM, Read It and Weep, then I’m not sure what will. Jake wonders if this movie was heavily inspired by Mean Girls compared to the book it was actually based on, Kate gets very frustrated at the plot of this movie as a writing teacher, and both of them agree that Jamie definitely needs therapy or some kind of mental health treatment. That’s right listeners it’s time to do your training and pick out your best formal wear as we kick (haha get it?) off season 4 with the 2006 Brenda Song led classic, Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior. We also reflect back on what 2023 was like for the podcast as a whole by looking at our Spotify wrapped stats and look forward to what 2024 holds for us as we get ready to head back out on the DCOM train with all of you!Normally this is where tangents go but since this episode is pretty munch all tangents I’ll just give y’all some time stamps:-Intro: 0:00-4:30-August: 4:31-1:35:28-September: 1:35:29-1:36:44-October: 1:36:45-1:40:12-November: 1:40:13-1:59:46-December: 1:59:49-2:10:07-Conclusion: 2:10:13-2:15:10Thank you all for sticking it out during our solidarity hiatus, we can’t thank you enough for supporting us in 2023 and continuing to listen to our backlog during the hiatus and we definitely can’t wait to continue the DCOM journey proper with you all in 2024!Follow the host’s Twitter (I’m not calling it X El*n): @jakeblue98 & @katescommentaryInstagram: jakeblueart & kvrandomFollow the podcast’s twitter: @TSOSNPodcast Follow the podcast Instagram: SomethingnewpodEmail us: startofsomethingnewpodcast@gmail.comIf you’re listening on Apple Podcasts feel free to leave a rating and reviewYou can also follow us on Spotify for Podcasters and leave us a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/startofsomethingnew

Jake wonders why Aly and AJ never sang in this movie, Kate talks about her favorite yogurts, and both of them point out the massive health code violations these girls 2006 fashion choices present. Alright everyone, say it with me: what team? Wildcats. What team? Wildcats. What team? Wildcats! Wildcats, get your head in the game! That’s right everyone, finally after almost 3 whole years of podcasting we’ve finally reached what some would argue is the pinnacle, the peak, of DCOMs as we kick off 2006 with the one, the only, the cultural reset that is, High School Musical. But we realize we couldn’t do this alone so we called in our friends Bekah and Hunter from The Time Mousechine podcast to talk all things East High. So strap in for this super sized episode on the DCOM that has cemented itself in the pop culture zeitgeist and raised a whole generation of people.

Quick CW for 1:19:45-1:24:00 Kate gets more into her own past traumas involving bullying.
Once again big thanks to Bekah and Hunter for joining us and also quick apologies if the audio sounds out of synch at one point, trying to line up 4 people talking is still challenging.

Gather round listeners, for a story that some may find, spooky. It is the story of a land very different than our own. A land full of magic and fantasy, a land ruled over my a king and a queen, a land that was under attack by darkness. A darkness that could only be defeated by the boy… I mean the twins who lived. Yeah if that whole introduction didn’t give it away then I don’t know what will, but yes join us listeners as we round off 2005 with a beloved Halloween DCOM classic, Twitches. If you didn’t get which DCOM were discussing from that… I honestly don’t blame you. This episode we’re discussing the much forgotten 2005 DCOM, Buffalo Dreams. Jake reveals a unknown fact about himself, Kate talks about experiencing the real life version of Soarin, and both them very much agree that we have no real authority to judge the accuracy of the Native American culture on display in this film. They also deliver some casting news about the upcoming Descendants 4/The Pocket Watch (yeah I don’t know which title Disney is officially going with.) This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Dropping microphones, An apology for the audio quality, Plans for our next possible Florida trip, Some quick research on Greek mythology, Kates history with Twilight, Scenes that we didn’t need to see, and White savior narratives. Also just one more time but we here at The Start Of Something New Podcast recognize our privilege and that we have no authority to talk on the issues facing Native Americans so if we say anything wrong in this episode please kindly reach out to us, we are always open to learn from people who have actually experienced these things. Ladies, gentlemen, and non-binary folk, gather around, as for my next trick I will make this podcast reappear after being gone for almost a month. That’s right just like magic we are back and ready to discuss a truly mystifying DCOM, so much so that it doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page. We’re talking the first DCOM of 2005, Now You See It. Jake ponders the legitimacy of the movies supposed reality tv program, Kate is reminded of the Reputation era, and both of them agree that the narrative structure of this movie could’ve been a lot better, as well as sing the praises of one Aly Michalka. This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Sorry for the radio silence, We will get to HSM this year, Giving Duwayne Dunham his flowers, A brief discussion of Aly and AJs career, Starstruck is our HSM actually, The most gaslighty DCOM ever, The Haunted Mansion, Halloween Horror Nights memories, Our school sponsored middle school parties, This is rip-off Harry Potter, and Poseidon’s Fury. Hurry up listeners! You don’t want to be late for your first day of school, don’t forget your lunch and your human disguise… wait, human disguise? That’s right listeners this episode we’re discussing the final DCOM of 2004, and the final Kimberly J. Brown lead Halloweentown movie, Halloweentown High. Jake contemplates the Halloweentown timeline, Kate talks about teaching credentials, and both of them point out red flags that Marnie is clearly just ignoring. Also they finally both have good microphones and hopefully the audio going forward is very nice and crisp. In addition to talking Halloweentown High, Jake and Kate also discover what they each think are the top 10 DCOMs so far, as well as the 5 DCOMs they think weren’t the strongest. Alright listeners I don’t have any fun and playful intro for you this time because it’s time for another serious DCOM that handles very serious subject matter. 2004s Tiger Cruise deals directly with the tragic events that occurred in America on September 11th 2001, including showing archival footage of said attacks. So if that’s something you’re not okay hearing about or dealing with we totally understand and we’ll see you next episode. That being said we try our best to cover this movie in the most respectful way we can as we know these events affected many people, including one of our own cohosts. If we say anything that’s wrong or uneducated please kindly let us know. We are always open to hearing from people better qualified to be talking about these subjects. Tiger Cruise is on the official DCOM list and we are covering them all so please just take anything we say with a grain of salt. Movie coverage starts at 23:35 because before we get into the seriousness we do report on some DCOM news that is very interesting as the movie we report on wasn’t intentionally supposed to be a DCOMFollow the host’s Twitter: @jakeblue98 & @katescommentaryInstagram: jakeblueart & kvrandomFollow the podcast’s twitter: @TSOSNPodcast Follow the podcast Instagram: SomethingnewpodEmail us: startofsomethingnewpodcast@gmail.comIf you’re listening on Apple Podcasts feel free to leave a rating and reviewYou can also follow us on Anchor and leave us a voice message: https://anchor.fm/startofsomethingnew
Listeners let me ask you something, have you ever felt trapped? Like you’re the only unique person in a sea of sameness? Like nothing exciting ever happens to you just because of where you live? Well, I’m not sure that you’ll find yourself with a pop stars phone but hey maybe something cool will happen to you. All this to say that we are talking the 2004 DCOM, Stuck in the Suburbs. Jake reminds everyone to back up their data, Kate confronts her cringey teenage self, and both of them agree that this movie came straight from Wattpad. We also share our rankings of DCOMs 41-50!This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Happy 2023 from 2022, Christmas as a kid vs Christmas as an adult, Kate finally got a good mic, A tease of lists to come, CalArts and A113, When we stopped watching Disney Channel, Not being like the other girls, and overall just cringey things we did as teenagers. Sorry for the bad audio in some spots, despite getting a new mic for Christmas Kate hadn’t set it up yet in time for this recording and Jake didn’t have his usual setup either. Hopefully those few spots aren’t too bad for you, and be excited for next episode which might just have our best audio quality yet. Zoom zoom zoom, make my heart go boom boom boom one last time. That’s right listeners, Christmas may be over but we have one last gift for you. We’re ending 2022 with one final look to the future as we officially finish our first DCOM franchise by discussing the finale of the Zenon Zilogoy if you will, 2004’s Zenon: Z3! Jake ponders the new fashion of the future, Kate demands #JusticeForMargie, and both of them agree that this isn’t the highest note the Zenon franchise could’ve gone out on. Alright listeners, I want a good clean match, first one to pin the other wins, and that right there is all I know about wrestling despite having watched a whole movie about it. That’s right it’s time to get your gear on and get that chip the size of Manhattan off your shoulder as we discuss the 2004 Andrew Lawrence lead DCOM, Going to the Mat. Jake wonders what high school bad gets invited to play at Radio City, Kate applauds for the appearance of Zero from Holes, and both of them wonder why Wayne Brady isn’t in this movie more, as well as say goodbye to the Lawrence brothers appearing on the DCOM journey. They also give some breaking news about the next installment in the Descendants franchise. Hello listeners, welcome back, we are your cohosts, and don’t you know, there’s nothing wrong with us. Yeah I didn’t really have much of a clever intro for this, but like just read that first sentence in Siri’s voice. Anyways it’s time to turn the volume up and listen to the first iteration of Hatsune Miku as we discuss the first DCOM from 2004, Pixel Perfect. Jake debates on whether or not this is a musical DCOM, Kate discusses the research she’s done on artificial intelligence, and both of them are completely taken aback by the depiction of the internet in this movie.

It's astounding, Time is fleeting, Madness takes its toll, But listen closely listeners, Not for very much longer, Your co-hosts got to keep control. If those lyrics weren’t enough of a tip off that this episode is gonna be a bit different, then hopefully me telling you that this episode is gonna be a bit different will. The time has come once again for us to celebrate the birthday of one of your co-hosts. For her second birthday bonus pick Kate has decided to make things spooky again as we look at the out of this world musical from 1975, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Kate recalls her time on the stage, Jake recalls when he died on stage, and both of them tackle this very of its time movie and how it’s still very enjoyable but also very clear that it was made in the 70s. Hopefully you have still have a fun time listening to this fun birthday celebration for Kate though.
Yeah just a quick content warning, this movie is rather different than what we usually cover on this show, and this handles more mature subjects and topics including those of a sexual nature, so if that’s not for you we get if you skip this and we’ll be happy to see you next episode where we’ll be back on the DCOM train.

Shalom listeners, also I swear that’s the only time I’m gonna use Jewish language in this whole episode, it’s time to light the menorah and also lace up your shoes and hit the court as we discuss the final DCOM from 2003, the very festive Full Court Miracle. Jake ponders who the principal of this school is, Kate discusses what grading do-over tests is like, and both of them have no idea how basketball works, and they really don’t know much about Judaism. They also report on a new DCOM announcement in the age where the DCOM is a dying breed.
Once again just a huge disclaimer, neither Jake or Kate are Jewish so they try not to overstep their boundaries in this episode. We apologize in advance is we say any misinformation or miss the importance of something, but shoutout to Jakes friend Rachel for giving him a bit of a crash course on the story of Hanukkah.

When you wish upon a star, you may get something than just concept art, maybe. Okay listeners I know what you’re thinking just by looking at the name of this episode “but you’re not a theme park podcast”, and you’re right. But we are both big fans of theme parks and because of behind the scenes scheduling The Cheetah Girls episode will be out later, so we decided why not talk about one of the biggest theme park events. That’s right we’re talking the D23 Parks Panel, and boy was there a lot to talk about. We start with some notable non-parks news before diving head first into the parks panel and all the news that came out for the international and domestic Disney theme parks. Jake can’t find Tokyo, Kate talks about an almost adventure she had, and both of them admit that they can’t run a marathon.

Alright listeners, I’m going to be real with you guys. This movie covers a very serious subject matter, we are covering the 2002 DCOM, Tru Confessions which discusses living with someone with a mental disability. Seeing as we are both able-bodied and able-minded people we really have no authority to speak on anything related to that so please take everything we say in relation to that with a huge grain of salt. We are still learning and we are still working on improving ourselves when it comes to discussing situations we have no experience with.
We here at The Start of Something New Podcast will always advocate for learning and educating yourself on situations you are unfamiliar with as we all have room to grow. I know we’re just two people who talk about made for tv children’s movies but we also believe that we all have a part in trying to make the world a better place for all those who live in it. So please research and educate yourself on how to properly behave in situations as shown in this film, a little step can make a huge difference. Hopefully you all still enjoy this episode as we discuss Tru Confessions.

Listens, come with us, as we go back to a simpler time. A time where giants roamed the earth, a time where one could go to the other side of the land for some reason, a time where a high school not only has a women’s basketball team but said team is also the most popular sports team in the school. That’s right, we’re going back to the long forgotten time of 1985. That’s because it’s time to lace up your shoes and practice your free throws as we take a look at the first DCOM from 2002, Double Teamed. Jake questions the authenticity of 2002s version of 1985, Kate questions the authenticity of these “twins” played by completely unrelated actors and both of them being up the importance of the arts. We also discuss some DCOM news and the future of DCOMs in general.
This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: A return to NYC, a school catch-up, the end of DCOMs(?), how believable is this 1985, the reality of twins dressing the same, school residential laws, another case of good mom and terrible dad, the first DCOM with drama club, and Christmastime in the city.

Love is in the air listeners, but we’re not here to talk Valentine’s Day, we’re here to talk Christmas, 2 months late. Either way it’s time to wrap up what 2001 had for DCOMs by discussing the Christmas classic, Twas the Night. This movie has everything: Santa, the guy from breaking bad, kids threatening to pee on electronics, it’s all here. Jake ponders having money at 14, Kate wants to talk to you about your cars extended warranty, and both of them discuss the differences between this Santa and the Santa from The Ultimate Christmas Present.
This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: Recording two weeks in a row, Euphoria and other shows we only know through the cultural zeitgeist, when did we stop watching Disney channel, the differences in DCOM Santa’s, child prodigies, what does and doesn’t count as a scam, and breaking up with your uncle

Folks it may be the middle of winter but that doesn’t mean we can’t bring some Halloween cheer to the table, that’s right we’re talking the 2001 DCOM sequel classic, Halloweentown 2: Kalabar’s Revenge. All your favorite characters from last time are back, even though some of them seem to have forgotten their development, and they’re ready to stop Kalabar’s secret son that no one ever knew that he had from enacting the plan his father failed at making happen. Jake realizes that this and the first movie take place in only one night, Kate tries to make sense of the time travel used in this movie, and both of them highlight and appreciate the eventual love story to come out of this movie.
This episodes tangents include but are not limited to: The feeling of being back at school, a celebration of a Halloweentown love story, 2001 CGI, cutting back and forth, ourselves at 15, DCOMs and time travel, Hocus Pocus, and 2001 internet references

You haven’t, well too bad because this movie tries to answer that question, and oh boy listeners is it something. That’s right we’re discussing the 2001 DCOM, The Poof Point. Ahoy there mateys! We’ve finally returned from our time at sea (read: hiatus), and we’re here to finally discuss another Lawerence brothers classic, this time with all 3 Lawerences. That’s right we’re talking about the 2001 DCOM sequel, Jumping Ship. Jake can’t remember the order the Lawerence brothers were born in, Kate checks Wikipedia, and they both question the lack of character development present in Michael. We also give our rankings for DCOMs 21-30.

Let’s see, suburban family consisting of a mischief making son, a precocious daughter, a clearly overworked mother, and a father who clearly cares more about his job than his family. Well that certainly sounds like a lot of movies that have already been made, so how do we spice that up? Oh I know, how bout the dad illegally smuggling home a chimpanzee from African that then goes on to learn sign language. That’s right listeners we’re discussing the 2001 DCOM, The Jennie Project. Jake discusses the time period the film is set in, Kate makes it known that she does not have a PHD, and both of them agree that Hugo Archibald is in the running for worse DCOM dad.

That’s right everyone welcome to the Start of Something New Halloween Special 2021, but it’s not just that it’s also Kates Birthday Pick! So gather round as we discuss the 2009 movie, Coraline. Kyle Johnson has it all, he’s the luckiest guy in school, but I’m sure that has nothing to do with the gold coin he wears around his neck or the fact that he’s parents insist that they are just American and not anything else heritage wise. Oh wait what’s that? Not only is his mother actual Irish after all but she’s also in fact a leprechaun??? That’s right listeners we’re discussing the 2001 Saint Patrick’s Day classic, The Luck of the Irish. Alright listeners I’m gonna be honest, this episode is honestly very different from all the others. In this episode your co-hosts will be tackling the 2000 DCOM, The Color of Friendship, and that includes the many heavy subjects that it covers. We say this in the episode but please take everything we say in this episode with a grain of salt as neither of us are in the proper place to discuss an experience like this or any black racial experience.
