After an ankle injury running the London Marathon put Kirsty out of action, she turned her attention to what she could do to stay active and challenged herself to do 100 sea swims which turned into 1000 sea swims, every single day!

Since then she has become a sea swim coach inspiring and helping others to get out of their comfort zone and experience the multiple benefits and ripple effect of sea swimming including increased confidence and courage, presence, emotional and mental wellbeing and strength.

With a degree in global health and social medicine, and certified fitness instructor Kirsty always had an interest in health and wellness, as well as a desire to work for herself. Using her background in marketing she is turning something she loves into her full time job.

We talk about identity and the journey of discovering who you are by following the subtle nudges and desires in life, as well as creating micro adventures and taking baby steps each day, which all add up to progress.

She also gives her top tips to get started safely if you're interested in getting in and swimming yourself.

Since recording this episode I was inspired to get in the sea myself - and whilst it was not on the cards before, I did not regret getting uncomfortable and can't wait for my next swim!

It has become apparent to me how my digestive health and energy levels have been far from optimum for many years now, and this has a knock on impact on how I show up and lead in business and life.

After making some good progress in 2021, I hired Liz to help me get to the root cause and turn things around. In this episode, she interviews me about our time working together so far! We dive into how I overcame energy lows, fatigue and long-term digestive issues (we even got a little geeky and share my stools analysis) to become effortlessly lighter (quite literally -12lbs in body & mind), brighter and full of business mojo sparks.

You can watch the original Facebook live video here on Liz's page: https://www.facebook.com/elizabethsergeant/videos/350078457023845

Be sure to give her a follow whilst you're over there. Also check out episode 24 of the show where I previously interviewed the lovely Liz.

If you're interested in following along with the next leg of my health journey - a 15 day gut cleanse - stay tuned as I'll be sharing all on the show.

In this episode I wanted to share with you a two part process that I take myself through at the end of something old / beginning of something new - like a new year - and why I feel looking back is the key to ensure we move forward powerfully.

In a nutshell:

Part one - Reflection

  • Mind map

  • 2021 =

  • Lessons Learnt

  • Word(s) for the year

Part two - Planning

  • Stop - Start - Continue

  • Word(s) for the year

  • Desires + Intentions = GOALS

Anna Marsh is a nutritional therapist and certified functional medicine practitioner, NLP practitioner, Neuro-strategist, Yoga teacher and currently training to become a somatic experiencing practitioner. She has a special interest in chronic illness, in particular fatigue.

Anna was also the first coach I hired that was the catalyst for my personal development journey which led to my decision to leave the corporate world to coach others myself.

We reflect on that decision and how far we’ve both come from being high achievers in survival mode for a large chunk of our careers, and some of the experiences and lessons we have learnt on the way.

Anna also shares the moment her nervous system was overloaded to the point it finally shut down and how she coped with slowing down to a more chilled pace of life she leads today whilst helping other women overcome their own challenges with energy.

October is a reflective time of year for me, its the month I made some big moves at various points in my life including leaving the corporate world after a 20 year career - next week it will be my 4 year anniversary.

It also marks a year since I told my story of that era of my life, and committed it to black and white in the pages of When The Goddess Calls Volume 4 - a multi author book available on Amazon.

So to mark the occasion I thought I'd read my chapter from the book on my podcast.

This is exciting because I am currently writing my own self-help book [un]becoming, and get to share that with you here first too. But first, let's do this... grab a cuppa and enjoy.

Sarah is Head of Life & Health Business Management, a team of 280 people across the EMEA regions at Swiss Re. A recent interview she did for The Actuary magazine was entitled "A woman on a mission" which caught my eye as she spoke openly and honestly about her experience of being a woman in a senior leadership role and how imposter syndrome had shown up in her career.

Sarah wanted to be an airline pilot growing up and got her private pilots licence at 18 after having her first solo flight aged 16! She went to University to do a maths degree as part of her career plan, until she realised how much it was going to cost her to fulfil her dream. That's when she found herself on her current path as an actuary.

We reflect on our experience going through a leadership development programme back in 2013 together and share what was going on for us behind the scenes. She speaks about the pressure she felt to continue being the expert as her remit expanded, and how she transitioned from being the doer to a leader, how she stays true to her feminine qualities, as well as what helps her grow and how she maintains some balance in her life. I also love her advice to other ambitious women looking to advance their career but maybe concerned about what more that means they need to give of themselves - tune in for all the goodness.

If you're looking for support to show up confidently and authentically in your career, check out my website for the various ways I might be able to help, and how to work with me, whether you're looking to invest in yourself or approach your employer to invest in you: www.emmaclaytonxo.com/services

This audio is also the optional pre-work for Embody Confidence - bringing you back to you, a 4 week course I created in 2019 that is too good to be kept in the archive so I'm bringing it back to life and sharing it through the month of October in The Initiation Members Club 👈🏻click to join us for only £55.

This was a fascinating conversation that I hope reaches wide and far...

Megan is a Gestalt psychotherapist and aware parenting practitioner, facilitating mothers and women back to wholeness and our deeply authentic self.

We talk about how trauma is the missing piece that isn’t talked about, how it shows up for the majority of us in day to day life, where it comes from and how profoundly transformational it can be to heal our trauma in connection with another, in the present moment.

We also explore why it’s so uncomfortable to be present with feelings that arise, and why it’s so easy to create habits that move us away from the discomfort.

Katherine creates space for business owners to feel more comfortable and certain in themselves when it comes to their message about what they’re doing with their work in the world, so they can communicate it powerfully.

This is exactly what she helped me do with my website - which I absolutely love - which is the output of the work we did together. You can check it out here: www.emmaclayton.xo

With a background in graphic design she originally started her business in branding but quickly recognised a gap in how comfortable her clients were in communicating the message or the meaning of the brand.

We talk about communication skills in leadership and particularly the power of listening, holding space and following through.

I love her mantra: when I speak my words are powerful. Try it on for size.

There is so much goodness in this episode with the epic Carlie Maree - Sociopolitical storyteller, psychospiritual educator and Wall Street Journal bestselling author.

We talk about the common cultural conditioning we are often subject to growing up from the time we enter the education system, from seeking permission to people pleasing and how to spot this in yourself and when you’re passing it on to your kids.

Carlie shares some of the core truths she now chooses to live by that are the foundational beliefs she operates from, and how she’d love to see the feminine magic be more valued in the world.

We touch on the hierarchy in the coaching industry and relate it to the corporate world and highlight some of the other made up things we get to opt out of if it doesn’t feel good.

And she gives the down low on her motivational intelligence findings which are shared in her first book, Soul Modes and how she’s concluded you’re not ‘all over the place’ but simply cycling through your four equally magic modes.

Today, I'm in conversation with Sarah, founder of WarriorKind, a not-for-profit advocating positive conversations around mental health, and TEDx speaker campaigning for reform when it comes to the medical and societal treatment of alcoholics. Since sadly losing her Dad in 2017 to alcoholism, she has educated herself about the challenges he faced in getting help for recovery due to the nature of the disease and societies stigma. She now believes alcohol didn’t kill her Dad, the stigma towards alcoholics did. Now on a mission for change #ForAManCalledSteve Sarah has lots of advice for anyone struggling themselves, or who knows someone that needs help, as well as a call to action for the rest of us if we are going to ensure that we don’t have a new pandemic on our hands. You can watch her deeply moving and perception shifting TEDx talk, Alcoholism - The deadly truth about its stigma, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVpaF8a0Mn8&list=PL1Q8bQIq6BaOLk6MVno640DBXrLxDoEzd&index=7 And please support Warriorkind by following and sharing their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/WarriorKindCIC

Tommy is a teacher at Mundella primary school in Folkestone, and TEDx speaker who is passionate about helping kids build confidence when it comes to maths, which he does through play.

He describes his approach to teaching as more like Game of Thrones than the Simpsons - and what that means in practice. We talk about the conditioning we experience from our family around whether we’re likely to be any good at maths before we even go to school, and what the conversation around the dinner table could be instead. And we reminisce on our own transition from primary to secondary education and what that means for our kids today.

Today on The Emma Clayton Show, I’m in conversation with Berry Billingsley, Professor in science education at Canterbury Christ Church University, and leader of the Epistemic Insight (EI) initiative.

EI is currently defined as ‘being epistemically curious and thinking critically about the nature, application and communication of knowledge’.

We talk about the switch we make as children from primary to secondary education, and the impact studying subject by subject on a timetable has on our ability to continue connecting the dots in the bigger picture of life and what it means to be human. As well as, how we can better make use of what we learn at school, later on in life if we take an EI approach to learning across subjects.

Today on the show I'm in conversation with Ruban Pillai about his TEDxFolkestone talk, the invisible challenges of stuttering.

By day Ruban works in the banking sector in risk, and in his spare time he is a director of a charity that helps other people experiencing a speech impediment in the work place. It formed in 2018 as a WhatsApp group which quickly grew to over 100 people around the world and became a community meetup group - a safe space for people to talk about the challenges they face.

In our conversation we talk more about the invisible challenges, as well as how we can best support someone we know or meet who has a speech impediment. In his excellent short (3 min) talk, he addresses the 99% of us that don’t live with this challenge and you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/Rt0VLUqVv2w

This is one of those conversations I did not want to end!

Richard Bundy recently appeared on the TEDxFolkestone stage to deliver his mesmerising talk, how letting go of inherited trauma can release you from the past. Watch Richards poetic and powerful talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3XLykkk61w&list=PL1Q8bQIq6BaOLk6MVno640DBXrLxDoEzd&index=16

Richard is a musician and systemic practitioner. He explains what (the latter) is, how trauma is inherited genetically and shares many eye opening stories and examples that get you thinking about the systems you may be in, and where your stress response comes from.

We also touch on how the healing process starts with acceptance.

I’m sure you’ll love listening to him as much as I do.

Nikky is a creative recruiter within the advertising and design industry who likes to help under represented groups navigate an industry that can be a challenge.

She talks about how companies reacted to the Black Lives Matter movement by upping their diverse hiring drive, without addressing their work culture and how this is neither a new issue nor will it be solved over night.

We also discuss what challenges are still present for women in the workplace and how change starts with us as individuals.

Both her work and lived experience as a female who falls under the LBGTQ+ umbrella led to her TEDx talk 'Recruitment with conscience when hiring diverse talent' which is a call to action to CEO’s and business owners to take a long hard look at their work culture as part of their Diversity & Inclusion efforts.

TED talks have been a big part of my own personal growth journey, opening my mind and eyes to new ideas, and challenging my perspectives.

This last 18 months I've been on a journey volunteering with my local, independently organised TEDx Folkestone to deliver an online event with 8 thought provoking, moving and inspiring talks.

Over the next few episodes I'm honoured to be in conversation with some of those speakers where I felt there was a natural crossover with the broad range of topics that find their way to The Emma Clayton Show.

Whether you're new to TED or a seasoned follower, I hope you enjoy this special season dedicated to some of the speakers and their topics presented at TEDx Folkestone 2021.

On 16th June 2021 at 22:48, as an epic thunder storm passed overhead, a very old, very tall cedar tree on our front drive was struck by lightning and a big chunk of it exploded. That moment has to be the scariest moment of my life, and whilst we're very grateful that no-one was hurt and the damage was limited to the tree and our vehicles parked below it, the realisation of how it could have been so much worse has been something that I've personally had to process.

Keen to tell the story and document this experience, I invited Adam and Lyndsey (who was staying with us that night!) on to the show to reminisce and talk about their experiences and how they too have been reflecting ever since.

I hope you enjoy being a fly on the wall for this special episode.

This is a unique episode. Corinne is someone I met online who I absolutely adore, we were having a catch up and I was like, hang on a minute! This is too good a conversation not to record - so we did.

It was a while ago now, but here we are, with no agenda, no structure just two people connecting over a common love of all things self-discovery, personal growth and making a difference in the world.

We start talking about the Human Design system and how this could be revolutionary for understanding our kids and ensuring they don’t go through as much conditioning as out generation have.

And we go on to talk about Beliefetics and the energy of money and weight, and releasing the expectations around weight loss. All the things!

Jane is an online and in-person health & fitness coach and personal trainer based in Sydney, Australia.

In and out of therapy since her teens, she is no stranger to experiencing anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse and repeated suicide attempts during a very challenging life. She had the body and the looks that many women longed for, but it never felt enough… until she found body building. Jane threw herself into her physical transformation and celebrated on stage as a fitness model the year she turned 50. But soon after she went deeper into depression, because as she’d later realise, whilst she’d been focused on the physical body, nothing else had changed - she still had no confidence or respect for herself and was miserable.

She completely turned it around and now proudly declares herself as fully recovered since 2016 and now knows that maintaining her Ferrari of a body is not just down to her unwavering dedication to health, but also working on her mindset every single day, as well as learning to respect and love herself.

She talks about how she played the inner game to help her get back on stage as part of her recovery, despite facing massive resistance and doing it for all the wrong reasons… but how everything happens for a reason. And she shares her top tips and how she works with the every day woman to help them improve their health, lose weight and feel great.

When Kresh was recently promoted to Director level in her corporate job, she started to question if she was really good enough and wondered what more she could do to prove herself given she was already working so hard.

When she asked me to help her navigate the transition, she got way more than she ever imagined. She stepped into a more confident, self-assured, powerful woman on a mission within only a few weeks. She cares less what other people think about her, speaks out unapologetically in meetings and has slowed down and taken more intentional, quality time outside of work with her family as a result of connecting to her bigger life purpose.

Us humans are emotional beings, yet so often we avoid experiencing the full spectrum of emotions - the hi's and the lo's. But feelings just wanna be felt. So, if you've ever suppressed or shoved down your emotions with food, alcohol, spending, screen time etc the antidote is to learn not to do that, and be with them instead. Easier said than done, but as always I love to practice what I preach and these last fews days I found myself spiralling into old thought patterns and feelings of anxiety... so I had the perfect opportunity to do just that. Thought I'd share with you here in case it helps you move through those uncomfortable feelings.

We talk about why our monthly cycle symptoms such as pain and mood swings are deemed as normal, but are not something we need to endure, and how going on the pill is not the solution to hormone imbalances. Today I’m in conversation with the wonderful Melissa Golding. Whilst she describes herself as ‘just an average housewife’ who was diagnosed with breast cancer early in 2020, you’ll quickly learn she has no idea of the extent of the impact she has already had on others after she took to Instagram to share her journey through surgery and treatment.

She gives us an open and honest insight into the emotional rollercoaster she and her family went through throughout the process, on top of a developing global pandemic and the realisation that there must be others going through the same thing.

With her new lease of life she has a mission to help others by sharing her story and lessons learned, and has a big message that you are so much more than your hair and your body... I believe Melissa is one to watch.

There is a lot of talk about beliefs, but what are they, why all the fuss and what do you even do with them once you've revealed some of the limitations?

Belief work, in my opinion, is what makes the dreams work - that's why the fuss - that's why I'm passionate about showing you how to build rock solid belief in yourself, so you get to realise your dreams in this lifetime.

That's why I'm running Belief Builder this month in the Initiation Members Club - check out the link for more details and to join us for the 14 day quest (whether joining us in April or further on down the line) http://bit.ly/initiationmembers

In todays episode I’m speaking to my first male guest, and he’s a gem. John Beetison is owner of the Strong Life Club and is incredibly passionate about helping busy women improve their overall mind, body and happiness.

He talks about how training and nutrition are just two cogs in a larger machine that is required to kick into action in order to reach our body goals, and what those other important elements are. I add my own insight into the pragmatic way John worked with me, and how that translates to each individual person and what the Regain Your Power Project involves.

He also openly shares why we reached out for support from me last year during a challenging time, and what came out of our working together.

In todays episode I’m mixing it up a bit so you effectively get to be a fly on the wall of a conversation with good friend, Alice Beetison, as we reminisce over our trip to Bali where we met on a yoga retreat in 2017. We’ve been good friends ever since, speaking almost daily, and have a good laugh about that one night we spent climbing a volcano to see the sunrise and the life lessons we’ve learnt along the way.

Alice shares how despite loving her job as a (very good) hairdresser, she is being called for more, and how she’s embracing her own personal development journey to be able to join her husbands wellness business, The Strong Life Club.

And we reveal why it all now makes perfect sense that we became such good (but unlikely) friends after meeting as we did.

Stay tuned for more from Alice and hubby John as we debrief on our experience of UPW with the Godfather of life coaching himself, Tony Robbins.

Start by asking yourself these questions:

  • Where has my low opinion of my body come from?
  • Do I see a true representation of body diversity in my news feed / where I hang out?
  • Is it really me that’s failed so many diets? or the diets that have failed me?
  • What if I never lose the weight?
  • What do I really want to feel, when I’ve lost the weight?
  • What can I do today, to feel that feeling now?

I would love to hear your thoughts, a-ha's or follow up questions - feel free to email me: Emma@emmajclayton.com

In the meantime, if you’d love to go deeper on your own journey of body acceptance, The Initiation Members Club doors are always open, this is where I teach you all I know and continue to learn to grow on this journey of becoming all I came here to be https://bit.ly/initiationmembers

Todays conversation is with life long learner Jan Coulson, a Flower essence practitioner and other half of the FAE Healers.

After moving to Spain for a quieter life, and then onto France she felt something was missing. After returning to the UK she experienced anxiety and depression for the first time in her life and rather than go on medication she sought alternative options and came across flower essences.

After going on a deep feeling journey to release unresolved trauma and heal herself, she studied to become a practitioner because she wanted more people to experience the power of these natural essences.

Jan shares what they are, and how they help release old stuck emotion and we talk about how flower essences have helped me on my own journey which has led me to be an ambassador for the nature kingdom which I just love!

Today I’m in conversation with the Happy Healer, Julie Taylor, who is a Homeopath and one half of the amazing FAE Healers.

Julie is a Londoner born and bred and was a secondary school teacher for nearly 3 decades until she moved with her family to Broadstairs to open a guesthouse. She first discovered homeopathy 30 years ago to help with some gynaecological problems after deciding that conventional medicine wasn’t for her. She went on to have 2 more children naturally and found herself fascinated by Homeopathy and its natural healing abilities.

She shares what Homeopathy is and what we can all learn from what our body is trying to tell us through our symptoms to find what’s actually at the root of any issues we’re experiencing, and what ancestral trauma has to do with it. We also discuss how she has helped me on my own journey of recovering from gut health issues that were really getting me down (warning contains toilet talk!)

Today I’m in conversation with the light hearted Nisanka, who is a coach using EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) Tapping and Matrix Re-imprinting to help with anxiety, stress and so much more.

Growing up in Sri Lanka, Nisanka had a traumatic start to life, experiencing poverty, war, domestic violence, sexual abuse and was left feeling neglected. Ever the surviver, she started a career in teaching before moving to the UK to do her masters at 28. It was only later after having her daughter that everything erupted and she experienced severe depression and anxiety which she now describes as a gift as it lead her on the path she is on now.

We talk about what trauma is to different people, and how it leaves an imprint in your mind, and how EFT tapping can help calm the stress response, whilst a resolution can be re-imprinted through the matrix, without the need to re-live the trauma.

Today, I'm in conversation with Sarah, founder of WarriorKind, a not-for-profit advocating positive conversations around mental health, and is currently preparing to speak on the TEDx stage about the stigma towards alcoholics.

She talks openly about her debilitating anxiety when it came to her own health as well as her two daughters and how she coped with her Dad’s mental illness and ultimately losing him to alcoholism.

Despite all she’s experienced, at the age of 31 Sarah found a strength and compassion for others, which fuels her passion and purpose today - to help others who are struggling with mental health challenges and stop societies shaming of alcoholics.

This was such a fun conversation with the adventure fairy, Vivi who is all about living life fully and helping you do the same through taking care of your adventure planning.

She’s been a digital nomad travelling over 70 countries in the last 7 years, with the exception of 2020 where she finds herself questioning her identity as she gets locked down with itchy feet in Canada.

She talks about the intentionality she puts in to her adventures, and how real travel is about getting uncomfortable when you find yourself in situations where you’re exposed to all the elements, and extracting the lessons.

Vivi shares some of her amazing travel stories and hilarious lockdown shenanigans as well as how you can still get adventurous during the current restrictions.

Kate is a successful career and business woman in financial services. She longed to travel and explore the world, but she’d always put her job and everyone else ahead of herself in the priority list, and there was something else holding her back. Having been overweight since a young age, on/off all the diets, food was always a “problem” and she put her life on hold for one day when she had finally lost the weight and felt confident. In the lead up to turning 40 she realised life gets to start now and so her journey started. Working with a personal trainer she lost an incredible 7 stone (45kgs) and started taking part in physical challenges outside of her comfort zone. As her body started to physically shape shift in front of her eyes, she became more and more aware of the inner work she needed to do to accept her transformation and feel good about herself. We talk about the work we did together one to one, to slow down and start putting herself first, improve her body image, reduce anxiety and get out of her head and into nature. Sasha is a make up artist, curve model and founder of the #BestYou events that aim to empower women to feel confident and good with or without makeup.

Always the ‘bigger girl’ among her friends at school, it was her big personality that protected her from bullies and covered up her desire to be slimmer, resulting in a lack of confidence beneath the surface - until she decided enough was enough.

She talks about her journey to freedom from dieting and how the accidental #filterdrop campaign went viral and caught the attention of the media including the BBC, Vogue and Grazia after she decided it is not ok to promote makeup and cosmetics using a filter, and made a stand against it.

Since recording Sasha has received news from the Advertising Standards Agency that because of her campaign, it is now "advised that brands/influencers/celebrities are not to apply filters to photos which promote beauty products if such filters are likely to exaggerate the effect the product is capable of achieving.”

I am in conversation with Rose White, an intuitive eating practitioner in the non diet space and co-founder of the Reframe club. Rose is passionate about helping others find a more peaceful relationship with food & their bodies.

A mum of 3, previously working in corporate, Rose found herself spiralling into a rock bottom moment after other mums at the school gates left her feeling like she didn’t fit in and questioning her worth.

She shares how she broke free from superficial relationships that were no longer aligned to her values, as well as ditched her perfectionist, people pleasing tendencies and remembered who she was, and how nature, writing and social media played a positive part in her healing and reclamation of her true, quirky, REBEL self.
