The European Union wants to go green. In December 2019, the European Commission unveiled its Green Deal, its roadmap to making the EU economy sustainable and thus achieving its end goal: to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.
But what does the Green Deal mean for each of us? As citizens, as consumers, what habits will we need to change to make our day-to-day lives more sustainable? What compromises will we have to make? And what measures can we expect from Europe and our national public authorities to encourage these changes?
By delving into daily life across the EU in this Green Deal podcast, our network of radio correspondents provides insight and answers to the challenges facing the bloc.

In the fight against climate change, humankind has an important ally: the humble tree.
Through photosynthesis, trees capture carbon dioxide and store it for a period of time. They therefore offer an important solution to the problem of excess greenhouse gases in the air. Indeed, in a young wood containing a mixture of native species, CO2 is trapped in the trees themselves, but also in their roots and the soil they are sitting in.
We continue our tour of the many and varied challenges that climate change poses in our daily lives, and the innovative solutions that Europe's citizens are coming up with to face them and this time we are looking at cluster housing. Could such grouped housing projects be a pathway to a new more efficient, cost-effective and collective way of life elsewhere in the EU?

Did you know that the building sector accounts for 40 per cent of all European energy consumption? And that it is also the biggest source of the bloc’s greenhouse gas emissions as it generates 36 per cent of its carbon emissions? It goes without saying that the European Union will not be able to achieve its Green Deal climate ambitions of cutting 55 per cent of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 without ensuring this key sector plays its part.

Over the last decade, we Europeans have increasingly thrown our weight behind the drive to reduce plastic waste, on the one hand by reducing our plastic consumption at the outset and, on the other, by better managing the waste we produce. From reusable bags to separate bins in our kitchen, we have all developed new behaviours to support the fight. But the pandemic has revealed one major obstacle on the road to a plastic-free (or at least plastic-light) world: the field of hygiene. So, has the pandemic set us back in our quest to consign plastic to the bin of history?
For more and more people, notably younger people, cars are not the status symbol they once were. This is in large part due to the bad rap they get over greenhouse gas emissions, with road transport responsible for almost 30 per cent of the EU’s total greenhouse gas emissions in recent years, and private cars accounting for almost two-thirds of this figure. The schoolchildren of today will most likely be directly affected by climate change and will have to deal with its impacts first-hand. If we, the current custodians of the Blue Planet, fail to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and stick to the 1.5 degree target, future generations will pay the price for our inaction.
