Dr. Joel Kinnamon retired as President and Superintendent of College of the Desert in March 2021. Over his nine-year term leading the Coachella Valley's junior college, Dr. Kinnamon erased the schools debt, won a multitude of honors and awards, and made the institution one of the most innovative and successful in the State of California. Since his departure, the college has been mired in controversy and lawsuits, has attempted to change direction in opening long-promised satellite campuses that received voter approval in the form of nearly $1 Billion in bond measures, and is not meeting the needs of students in the Western Coachella Valley. That is among the reasons that Dr. Kinnamon has decided retirement is nice, but his knowledge and leadership are needed to return the Board of Trustees to its true role.
