On this show, the other Dr. Jessica Turner is our guest. Veterinarian, Dr. Jessica Turner, worked for years first as an emergency vet and then as a GP. After years of balancing a career and mom life, she experienced burnout and was later diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic (long-lasting) autoimmune disease that mostly affects joints. RA occurs when the immune system, which normally helps protect the body from infection and disease, attacks its own tissues. The disease causes pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function in joints.

When faced with the possibly of long term steroid treatment and potentially ending up in a wheel chair, Dr. Jessica turned to holistic medicine to find answers. Now she's on the road to recovery and has become a passionate advocate for holistic medicine.

According to Psychology Today, perfectionism is a trait that makes life an endless report card on accomplishments or looks. When healthy, it can be self-motivating and drive you to overcome adversity and achieve success. When unhealthy, it can be a fast and enduring track to unhappiness.

What makes extreme perfectionism so toxic is that while those in its grip desire success, they are most focused on avoiding failure, resulting in a negative orientation. They don’t believe in unconditional love, expecting others’ affection and approval to be dependent on a flawless performance.

On this episode of Living Well with Dr. Jessica, we are joined by Ellie Fuentes who tells us how we can overcome perfectionism. Ellie is a private practice therapist at Clinical Insights in New Jersey. She holds a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Fairleigh Dickinson University and is a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counsel and a Licensed Associate Counselor in the state of New Jersey.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I hope you are humming that song now because my brain can’t help but fill in “with kids jingle belling and everyone telling you be of good cheer!”

On a serious note, I do believe it is the most wonderful time of the year but sometimes I find myself struggling to go along with the rest of this song and be of good cheer. Instead of slowing down and enjoying the magic that comes with the season, I find myself going at a pace that isn’t sustainable. Then in the blink of an eye, the holidays are over and I am left wondering if I was even present for any of it. I somehow chose to focus on the things that didn’t really matter and missed out on the ones that did.

Can you relate? Maybe it’s because you are drowning in your already overflowing “to-do” list or the mere thought of how much money it’s going to take to make the holidays a reality. Or maybe you are approaching the first holiday season without a loved one or better yet, the first where you are focused on remaining sober in a sea of festive spirits. Whatever you are facing this holiday season, I got you covered with the “Living Well Holiday Special”!

Inside, you will find everything from healthier recipes to fun gift ideas to insight into being in charge of your finances instead of it being in charge of you. My hope is that this book along with the featured podcasts will leave you not only excited about the holidays but prepared to enjoy them as you should!

From my family to yours - Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

With so much love,

😍😍😍😍😍

On this episode we meet Dr. Renee Wellenstein. Dr. Renee is a double board certified doctor who has been working with women for over 20 years and due to her own personal health challenges, she stepped outside the box of conventional medicine to take a radically different approach to heal herself from the deep depths of burnout.

About a decade ago, Dr. Renee was living what she thought was her dream life; she was an extremely busy Ob/Gyn, married to a doctor, with toddler twins and had moved to a quaint, quiet town in the country.

One day in May 2012, Dr. Renee fell off of her horse during a riding lesson and broke her back. She not only struggled with severe back pain, but with fatigue and the inability to focus. Her doctor diagnosed her with depression, but her symptoms did not improve after trying two different antidepressants.

Two years after her injury, Dr. Renee was still struggling with unexplained symptoms. After exhausting all of her options in the conventional healthcare system, she was put in contact with a doctor who was an “anti-aging” practitioner. She finally received the appropriate diagnosis, her symptoms resolved and she got back on her feet and joined the world of functional medicine.

In 2019, Dr. Renee started Kaspira Elite Health Consulting, LLC. Throughout her journey she has certainly faced her fair share of obstacles and has mastered the art of leaping into transitions with each pivot. Now Dr. Renee empowers women to take control of their health, jumpstart their energy, improve their confidence, and reignite their libido!

On this episode of Living Well with Dr. Jessica, our guest is Dr. Joseph Hahn, from Merck Animal Health. Dr. Joseph talks about the results from the most recent veterinary wellness study.

From hospital directors and practice owners, to veterinary technicians, veterinarians, and administrative staff, the latest wellbeing study- conducted by AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) Merck Animal Healthand Brakke Consulting revealed the main barriers impacting those who practice veterinary medicine are the shortage of qualified staff and the fact that not all clinic or hospital employees have access to the same mental health tools as veterinarians.

👉While 92% of respondents rated increased stress as one of their top mental health challenges, 88% cited student debt and concerns about the risk of suicide as leading stressors for veterinarians.

👉More than 90% of respondents reported that the shortage of qualified veterinary staff has been one of the biggest concerns.

👉The percentage of veterinarians with serious psychological distress has increased to 9.7% in 2021 as measured by the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, compared to 6.4% in 2019, due in large part to the ongoing pandemic.

👉Among staff, the prevalence of serious psychological distress was nearly twice as high (18.1%). In addition, half of staff respondents (49.6%) and approximately one-third (30.5%) of veterinarians reported high levels of burnout.

On this episode of Living Well with Dr. Jessica, we meet Dr. Sonja Olson who is a Wellness Educator for the BluePearl Health & Well-being Team. She works alongside veterinary social workers to create and train on well-being concepts and initiatives as well as foster conversations that promote a more compassionate, healthy community and culture. She talks about the problems facing the profession these days and her new book, A Call to Life.

A Call to Life aims to help veterinary caregivers increase self-efficacy, decrease unnecessary suffering, and increase sustainability in their mission to support animal health around the world. The veterinary profession is powered by dedicated, bright, and selfless individuals. Unfortunately, the long-standing and dysfunctional culture in classrooms and practices around the world expects veterinary caregivers to be ready to sacrifice everything – their time, their health, their personal lives – in the name of being deemed qualified and ‘worthy.’

Most of us are familiar with goal setting. We vow to lose weight or get a new raise at work. Many times, however, we are so busy chasing these smaller goals that we fail to look at the big picture. Life goals are the big goals in life. The goals that define who we want to be as people and what we want out of our lives.

Having life goals can change who you are as a person. When you know more about what you want out of your life, it helps you make small shifts in what you do each day, so you can get closer to that goal one step at a time.

On this episode of Living Well with Dr. Jessica, influencer and veterinary surgeon, Dr. Courtney Campbell, talks about the importance making healthy lifestyle choices for 2022 and beyond.

The holidays are a wonderful time of the year. While many of us will use the time to reconnect with family and friends, some of us are just looking forward to having time to relax from the normal day to day grind.

Holidays are also a time when we like to spend money. In fact, according to Deloitte, the average American household is expected to spend about $1463 dollars on holiday gifts, goodies and travel this year.1

Depending on your viewpoints on money, thinking of spending that much money might make you stressed. When it comes to spending, you want to make smart choices, but knowing where to start can be the hardest part.

On this episode we meet the finance gurus from Florida Veterinary Advisors, CJ Burnett and Tom Seeko who give us some great tips on how to make smart money moves during the holidays. CJ, who in addition to being a financial advisor, is also an accomplished musician who ends the show with and amazing duet with himself! This is a must listen!

Burn out is a real, and pervasive problem in the vet industry. People work long hours, often in emotionally charged situations, and often throw a work/life balance out the window. Veterinary technician, Alyssa Borden, knows first hand just how tough this problem can be.

After struggling with the huge burden of hating the job she used to love, Alyssa got the best advice she would ever get in her career—“If you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life.”

She made the difficult decision to leave the clinic, and to set off on a new adventure instead. This decision lead her to Vetsie, a virtual care clinic that would help her strike a better work life balance. It ended up being a great decision for her. Vetsie allowed her to continue offering care to animals and helping owners in need, without feeling overwhelmed or burned out by her job.

There’s no other pet loss book like Griffin’s Heart—because it’s more than a book—it’s a book / journal / workbook / keepsake all in one. Readers are prompted to actively participate in the healing process through journaling, placing photos, healing exercises, and more. When finished, Griffin’s Heart becomes a keepsake filled with memories to honor and remember a life lived. It’s the perfect gift for anyone who is suffering from the loss of a beloved pet and struggling to navigate the grief process.
