Acetaminophen use is universally promoted as safe for adults and children alike, but the use of acetaminophen in babies and young children may be strongly associated with autism, perhaps because of well-known deficiencies in the metabolic breakdown of pharmaceuticals during early development. One explanation for the increased prevalence of autism is that increased exposure to acetaminophen, exacerbated by inflammation and oxidative stress, is neurotoxic in babies and small children.
Dr. William Parker has studied the effects of acetaminophen use in infants and children for decades, and today he presents his research. Please join us for an absolutely eye-opening conversation about the dangers of acetaminophen, and stay tuned as Kay and Elanie cover natural, risk-free alternatives to its use.

ADHD is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in children under 18. The prevalence of ADHD is rising dramatically, with 1 in 20 children being on behavior modifying medications such as Adderall and Ritalin. These are medications that act as central nervous system stimulants, and can cause nervousness, agitation, anxiety, insomnia, vomiting, mood swings, an increased heart rate, increased blood pressure and even psychosis in susceptible individuals. Most research indicates the increase in ADHD is directly linked to poor gut health, the food that children eat, how they sleep and even how they breath.Join us in this episode as we explore natural alternatives for ADHD including diet, lifestyle, and supplements, that can help your kids (and adults) focus better and beat hyperactivity.Citations1. Let’s face it—we are immersed in a toxic world. Given the prevalence of chronic conditions around the world, we’re all probably dealing with more toxicity than we’re willing to admit. Issues like joint pain, fatigue, hair loss, eczema and plain old smelly gas plague billions of people. Sure, we blame it on our age, we blame it on our upbringing, we even blame it on our parents. But the truth is that countless chronic illnesses develop and persist because of the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the environment around us every single day. Toxins are everywhere -so what can we do about it?
Drawing on her own struggles with mold and metal toxicity as well as Celiac disease, in this episode of the Renegade Nutrition podcast, Dr. Trubow shares her experiences as well as issues her patients have faced and overcome as guidance to anyone struggling with their own chronic health issues.

Hormone optimization is essential for maintaining a healthy weight, and one of the most important hormones for fat loss is leptin. Leptin helps our bodies maintain a healthy weight by communicating with the brain when fat mass is accumulating, so that the brain can respond by reducing hunger and increasing energy expenditure. Unfortunately, leptin-resistance can develop, causing our brain to stop responding to leptin appropriately, causing the body to gain more and more fat.
In this episode, we will discuss the role of leptin and other hormones in the accumulation and loss of fat, and how to optimize these hormones naturally, without the use of harmful weight loss drugs.

Our immune system is connected into the environment in which we live - viruses, bacteria, toxins, stress, etc. Our innate immune system is our first line of defense and is located right at the barrier of the inside and outside world because it is on our skin, in our mucosal lining in our nose and sinuses, mouth, lungs, stomach and gut lining. Trauma can be physical, chemical, or emotional, but regardless of the type, our body is primed to deal with trauma through the basic reactions of fight, flight, or freeze. When an animal is threatened, by a predator or another animal, they have a physiological reaction:
Heart rate goes up
Blood flow goes up
Muscles get filled with blood to help them run
Respiration increases
Digestion decreases
The amygdala - responsible for fear and anger - fires off rapidly
For humans, the predator can be an angry boss, a frustrated spouse, financial troubles, worry about the future, distress about political situations, etc. Needless to say, our bodies are in fight, flight, or freeze quite often, and this physiological response can be quite harmful long term!
In this episode we will discuss very practical and simple tools that you can use to protect your body from the trauma caused by emotional stress.

Functional mushrooms are those that have potent medicinal qualities and known studied benefits, in addition to being edible. These mushrooms have actually been used as an important part of medicinal toolkits for as long as 7,000 years, though they have recently gained popularity in modern nutritional medicine.
Indeed, today we are only just realizing what ancient cultures have know for centuries: that mushrooms provide amazing benefits for immune, cardiovascular, endocrine, neurological, and cellular health. Mushrooms are a rich source of vitamins and minerals, and are one of the highest dietary sources of beta-glucans. Functional mushrooms may play a role in protecting against neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and they have immune boosting properties and can help our body fight off bacterial, viral and fungal infections, as well as combat and even prevent cellular dysfunction such as that which occurs in the development of cancer.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), is a more serious form of acid reflux, and is now statistically the most common digestive disorder in the US.Heartburn and GERD are not just debilitating, they are costly. Unfortunately, there is a HUGE misunderstanding about what causes acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD, and that has lead to completely inadequate methods of dealing with it.Join us in this week's episode while we dissect the REAL cause behind heartburn and GERD and what you can do to address this cause functionally and holistically. "Probiotic" is a pretty common buzzword these days. We have probiotic supplements, snacks, smoothies, yogurt, drinks, and more. But what are probiotics, and what do they do? Are probiotics actually useless, as some health professionals argue? Could they even be harmful? These are important questions, and it turns out the research around them is complicated, to say the least.
As we discussed in our Gut Health 101 episode, an unhealthy gut is associated with a number of different chronic diseases. In many cases, research has shown that the relationship between a dysbiotic (unbalanced) gut microbiome and diseases such as autoimmune disease, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, skin issues, mood disorders, ADHD and ASD, heart disease, and even cancer (to name a few) is directly causal, meaning that just having a disrupted gut microbiome can actually cause these diseases.
So, having a healthy gut microbiome is very important!
Today we are going to get more into detail about probiotics, which are often a major part of helping heal the gut, and hopefully clear up some misinformation about their use. There is enough information on this topic that we had to split it into two episodes, so stay tuned for part 2!

One of the most common questions I’ve run into during my time as a nutritionist is whether dairy is good or bad for you, and what role it plays in a whole foods diet.
Indeed, I myself have gone back and forth on this question over the years.
I used to staunchly advocate a dairy-free diet for everyone, arguing that dairy is universally inflammatory and that it wasn’t necessary for bone health and is pushed far too hard, because of subsidies from the dairy industry.
And it remains true that the “milk, it does a body good” message is subsidized by the dairy industry and that many important minerals for bone health can come from other foods, such as small fatty fish with the bones in and fermented foods and dark leafy greens.
However, in recent years, I have become increasingly aware of the benefits of GOOD QUALITY, FULL FAT dairy for individuals who can tolerate it. I have even learned about some of the anti-inflammatory benefits of good quality, full fat dairy.
So in this episode we will discuss what the science shows about dairy consumption, and how it could be a beneficial part of nutrient dense food for those who tolerate it.

Food cravings are wildly common. As many as 97 percent of women and 68 percent of men report experiencing cravings for certain foods!
While food cravings can be a combination of many influences, including social, cultural, psychological, and physiological factors, one lesser known, but significant influence on cravings comes from our gut microbiome. Yep, you read that right - our gut bacteria can release chemical signals that influence our brain and make us crave certain foods! While some cravings can be positive, many are downright unhealthy, and are a major barrier to better health for many individuals.

Bowel movements are something I discuss with every wellness client.
I like to find out if they are consistent and daily, or if they have issues with constipation or diarrhea, because you can tell a lot about someone’s digestion based off of how they are pooping.
Poop can give you a picture of how things are going inside of your body, which is a very helpful overall indication of your health. So, I think it's a good place to start in raising awareness about your health and keeping an indication of how things are moving.
I look at my poop every single day, and I ask my clients to do so also, and after this episode, I will encourage all of our listeners to do the same if you aren’t already!
So let's smash right through that ice barrier with poop and talk about why poop can and should be the ultimate health indicator that we should watch on a daily basis.

During my first year as a masters student, I believed that all things written in the name of science were trustworthy, full of integrity and truth.
As long as the research I was reading was from a research study, published in a scientific journal, I assumed it was reliable.
But then I took a course in my second year called “Evaluating the Literature” which was dedicated to helping science students interpret and evaluate research studies to determine their validity. This training opened my eyes up to how many poorly conducted research studies are out there in circulation, and is training that has guided me well for the last decade or so, through my masters in Nutrition and beyond.
As I’ve paid closer attention, I’ve discovered that many nutrition studies are highly corrupted by the food and pharmaceutical industries.
So, today I want to share with you some tips to help you recognize good research, and weed out bad research, and determine the validity behind some of those “scientific” claims you see in the news and online. Join us for a rousing discussion of the hidden corruption in the nutritional science industry and learn how you can separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to interpreting scientific articles.

We all know that vegetables are good for us, and most of us know we ought to eat more of them than we do, but many of us struggle with finding ways to get enough in our diet each day.

They provide a myriad of health benefits like:
But even with all of these known health benefits, it can still be hard to eat enough vegetables to see the benefits of their nutrition. Many of us go to our doctor’s office once a year for our annual checkup. Often this visit includes getting some basic labs drawn and blood pressure taken.
As long as our labs all come back "normal," we go about our lives and don't think about our health again until the next year.
Yet many people who are told that everything is "normal" actually don't feel all that great.
More than 35% of Americans have pre-diabetes, 68% struggle with sleep, and 47 million of us have metabolic syndrome, a dangerous combination of high blood pressure, excess belly fat, impaired fasting glucose, imbalanced cholesterol ratios, and high triglycerides.
Yet even for these unhealthy individuals, their numbers can be “normal.”

The holidays are always a good time to talk about making time for self-care and stress management. More heart attacks and strokes happen between Christmas and New Years than any other week of the year.
A year ago, I was in the midst of a demanding and ungrateful work situation. After a lifetime of pushing myself too hard in order to appear and feel successful, I hit complete burnout, because I basically hadn’t made time for self-care in like, 32 years. And it really wasn’t pretty. It lead to challenging physical, emotional, and mental health issues. So I learned the hard way, you have to have to have to make time to rest.
No matter what diet you follow, how much you exercise and what supplements you take, if you’re not managing your stress you will still be at risk for chronic health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s, hypothyroidism and autoimmunity. But as pervasive as stress is, many people don’t do anything to mitigate its harmful effects.
In this episode, we take a good look at what self-care is, why it’s so important, and how you can start incorporating self-care into your own life, today!

In this episode, I want to delve into why eating seasonally and locally is important - for your health, our economy, and the planet!
Organic, local and seasonal food = more nutrients, better taste, and fewer chemicals
Organic plant foods contain, on average, 25 percent higher concentrations of nutrients than conventional, and the difference becomes even more dramatic with local vs. imported produce.
Unfortunately, more than half the fruit and almost one-third of the vegetables sold in the US are imported. A typical carrot, for example, travels close to 2000 miles before it reaches your dinner table.
This is especially true when you’re eating foods that are out of season in your local area, like tomatoes, bananas or cherries are in the middle of winter in the Midwest.
Possibly more than a week has passed since that produce was picked, unripe - in order to survive transport - and then packaged and trucked to the store, where it can sit on the shelves even longer. The problem with this is that produce doesn't reach peak nutrient status until it is completely ripe, and once harvested, produce nutrient content begins to degrade with exposure to oxygen and heat.
This can cause BIG problems with the nutrient value of your produce.
Join us in this episode to learn the impacts of eating local and seasonal vs. imported and non-seasonal, and how to find the best local and seasonal produce near you!

According to CDC estimates, Americans suffer approximately 30 million cases of the flu per year, many of those falling during the Fall and Winter months as we enter cold and flu season.
The decrease in sunlight exposure, outside time, reduced vitamin D, increased stress, and seasonal depression are some factors that may increase the prevalence of colds and flus during flu season.
When people feel the first signs of a cold or the flu, many may reflexively reach for over-the-counter pharmaceuticals such as decongestants, antihistamines, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen and aspirin. However, evidence indicates that these drugs do nothing to shorten the duration of illness or prevent illness in the first place; they merely suppress symptoms. Furthermore, many of these drugs come with significant side effects, and unfortunately, it’s not just bacteria that are becoming resistant to pharmaceutical drugs; viruses are also developing drug resistance. Research has revealed that the influenza A virus can quickly acquire resistance to anti-influenza drugs by mutating, which poses a problem for the conventional medical system, which relies on antiviral drugs to treat severe flu cases.
Fortunately, we have a wealth of natural remedies for colds and flu at our fingertips, with many vitamins and herbs providing clinically proven results.

Here in the Midwest we are heading into Winter a little sooner than I normally would like, so it seemed like a good time to discuss today’s topic, Seasonal Depression and how to overcome it.
For many of us, myself included, the cloudy days and cold, wet, and wintry weather this time of year may actually have more of an effect on our health than we realize.

Inflammation is a term that is thrown around a lot these days, including in our podcast!
In this episode, I want to walk you through what the term inflammation really means, and what it indicates, so that you can be well educated and informed.
Inflammation is a biological response of the immune system that can be triggered by a variety of factors, including pathogens, damaged cells, and toxic compounds. These factors may induce acute and/or chronic inflammatory responses in the pulmonary system, cardiovascular system, digestive system and reproductive system, potentially leading to tissue damage or disease. In the short-term, inflammation is a good thing! It is a necessary system our body employs to kick-start the healing process. However, uncontrolled acute inflammation may become chronic, continuously activating inflammatory pathways and contributing to a variety of chronic inflammatory diseases.
Learn what can cause chronic inflammation, and how you can protect yourself against it as you join us in this week's episode of the Renegade Nutrition podcast!

In this episode of the Renegade Nutrition Podcast, we had the privilege of interviewing the AMAZING Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, author of Gut and Psychology Syndrome, Gut and Physiology Syndrome, Put Your Heart in Your Mouth, and Vegetarianism Explained.
Dr Natasha graduated with honors as a conventional Medical Doctor in 1984 from Bashkir Medical University in Russia, before moving on to obtain her postgraduate MMedSci Degree in Neurology. But when she became a mother, everything changed. At 3 years old, her son was diagnosed with severe autism.
Dr. Natasha was launched into a steep learning curve, as she researched everything she could to help her son. What she discovered was that a low-carbohydrate diet rooted in her ancestral traditions, the same diet that in fact had saved her life when she was failure to thrive at 18 months old, could - with slight alterations - help her son. Almost immediately, Dr. Natasha noticed significant improvements in her son's behavior and development.
Today, Dr. Natasha's son is a successful, normally functioning adult with no absolutely signs or symptoms of autism.
Dr. Natasha has since become world-renowned as the creator of the GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) protocol - a life-saving protocol that has helped hundreds of families manage and even reverse symptoms of autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, depression, dyslexia, dyspraxia, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and more. And much, much more.
We’ve had a handful of episodes on what not to eat - sugar, processed foods and carbs, seed oils and toxic fats, artificial dyes, gluten.
Now we are beginning our ascent into what TO eat.
One of those essential food groups that is highly underrated but should be a part of everyone's diet is cruciferous vegetables.
I am talking specifically broccoli and broccoli sprouts, but also included in the list of cruciferous vegetables are brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, bok choi, and radishes, to name a few.
These foods contain the compound sulforaphane, which as you will find out in this episode, is a crucial anti-oxidant boosting molecule that should be a part of your daily diet! For the first time in over 200 years, children born today are expected to have a shorter lifespan than their parents. There has been a rapid rise in childhood obesity, with subsequent increases in the development of chronic diseases at younger and younger ages. Indeed, Type 2 Diabetes, which used to be called adult onset diabetes, can now no longer be referred to under that name due to the fact that it now is being diagnosed in children as young as 10, with newly diagnosed cases increasing roughly at a rate of 5% per year. Clearly, this is a problem. We’ve already identified several suspects, including sugar, industrial seed oils (aka vegetable oils), and refined, processed foods. Today we talk about one of the biggest offenders of all: Gluten. Join us in this episode as we discuss all things gluten, find out how it may be impacting your and your loved ones' health, and what you can do about it.
As promised in this episode, below are some details that you may find helpful should you choose to begin a journey of freedom from gluten. Here is a list of gluten-containing grains:
Barley Rye Spelt Kamut Bulgur Oats Semolina Couscous Farina Matzo Wheat germ Triticale
The following starches and grains are gluten-free:
Amaranth Arrowroot Buckwheat Cassava Millet Corn Potato Quinoa Rice Sorghum Soy Tapioca Teff
Sometimes, gluten is extra sneaky and hides under other names. These include:
Amino peptide complex Avena sativa (a form of oats) Brown rice syrup Caramel color (made from barley) Cyclodextrin Dextrin Hydrolysate Hydrolyzed malt extract Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, or just vegetable protein Maltodextrin Modified food starch Natural flavoring Secale cereal Soy protein Tiriticum aestivum or vulgare Yeast extract

Ever wonder about the Red no. 40 in those fruit snacks? Or the Blue no. 1 in your mouthwash? These are a few of the 7 certified food colors (“FD&C colors”; FD&C = Food, Drugs & Cosmetics) approved for widespread use in the U.S.
These dyes, made from carcinogenic ingredients, are added to many processed foods, candies, beverages, over-the-counter medications, and vitamins in the US, especially those intended for children. But since the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) initially approved the food dyes between 1969 and 1987, (when few studies of children were available) clinical trials using synthetic dyes have examined neurobehavioral outcomes in children, and laboratory studies of neurotoxic effects in developing animals have become available. Food dyes have been anecdotally and scientifically shown to negatively affect behavior, especially in children, the effects of which is most profound in children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and other behavioral issues, increasing hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and inattention. Animal studies indicate effects of exposure to synthetic food dyes on activity, memory and learning, changes in neurotransmitter systems in the brain, and microscopic changes in brain structure.
Learn more about the harmful effects of artificial dyes and colors in this episode of the Renegade Nutrition podcast, and find out what you can do to keep yourself and your family safe!

However, in the world we currently inhabit, getting the nutrition we need from diet alone is not just extremely difficult, it may well be impossible.
Declining soil quality, long distance transportation and decline of nutrient density of food in transit, an increasingly toxic environment, genetic alterations of heirloom varieties of food, overuse of antibiotics and other medications that damage the gut and liver, a massive increase in chronic stress, decreased sleep quality and duration, and reduced connection with nature and less time spent outdoors all add up to necessitate the supplementing of our diets with quality vitamins and minerals.
In this episode, learn about the top 3 most important vitamins and minerals (besides vitamin D) that you should be supplementing with today.

Today we have some super exciting news here for you on the Renegade Nutrition Podcast! We at Renegade Nutrition are creating a docu-series! Inspired by their own health journeys, Kay and Elanie realized that what stands between an individual and their journey to complete wellness is empowerment. Individuals who feel empowered push the boundaries of their health and advocate for themselves - they forgo the status quo. But when an individual doesn’t feel empowered, their journey ends before it ever begins. We need to change that. So, we are starting an adventure to capture and document the journeys of people just like you, who completely revolutionized their health from the inside-out, along with interviewing the renowned health professionals who guided them along the way. Whether dealing with heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, autoimmune disease, infertility, ADHD or ASD - we will share all of the tools others have used to thrive, so that you can do the same. If you or a loved one is struggling with illness or disease, this is a docu-series you will not want to miss. But we need your help. Making a single documentary, let alone a docu-series, is NOT cheap. It will likely cost us $50,000 per episode to pay for film crew, editing, travel, lodging, and interviews. That doesn’t include any sort of income for either Kay or Elanie, but that’s okay, we’re not doing this for money! Our passion is to help others, and finding and succeeding in that passion is payment enough. In order to fund each series episode, we plan to launch a campaign on Kickstarter. But in order to be successful, we need an awesome, kick-a** trailer video that adequately conveys our mission. The cost to make that trailer video will probably be around $5,000. So, we’re asking you for help getting that initial trailer video funded, so that we can launch on Kickstarter. Humankind needs you. Will you help? Send us a check or Venmo a donation towards creating this revolutionary docu-series. Any amount you can give helps! Thank you in advance, you have all of our love and gratitude!
