Use it or Lose it

matthew 25:14-30

Are you willing to take what God has given you to help build the body of Christ? It doesn’t matter if you succeed or fail. What matters is that you try. That’s where grace comes in. Jesus is always there to pick us up and encourage us.

Stairway to Heaven

James 1:1-4

James encourages us to endure the difficulties of life as a gift from God. In the face of difficult challenges we have the opportunity to grow in Christian maturity, to round out our discipleship, to grow in faith, that is our loyalty and reliance on God, along with all the other qualities that make for a true disciple of Christ.

What matters most

1 Thessalonians 2:9-13 Paul wants us to recognize the positive features of mission. Missionaries need to be upright in conduct - holy, righteous and blameless. They had acted in a caring way toward the new church and were encouraging, comforting and urging Thessalonians to do good works. All this was directed toward one end, that the members of this new church might live lives worthy of the Lord, worthy of the one who bids them to share in the splendor of God’s kingdom.< [...]

How Much

John 6:1-21

In the story of the feeding of the five thousand and of Jesus’ walking on water, John describes signs which serve to reveal the true nature of Jesus’ messiahship, namely, his function of feeding us with the bread of life and carrying us safe to a distant shore.

Trust

Exodus 17:1-7

Sometimes it feels like no matter how much faith we have, no matter how many promises we have heard, and no matter how many signs God has provided, still, most of us from time to time wonder if God has abandoned us. In other words, we have difficulty trusting.

We aren’t the first ones in history to feel this way. For example, in today [...]

Here’s the Secret

Matthew 16:13-20 Jesus and his disciples have entered the district of Caesarea Philippi, some twenty miles north of the Sea of Galilee. He asks the disciples who people say he is. Most people see Jesus as some sort of prophet, but Jesus wants to know who the disciples think he is. Peter declares that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus then announces that Peter is blessed for this answer and that upon this rock Jesus will build the new Israel, bestowing on Peter and his fellow believers the authority to bind and loose.

We Belong to Jesus

Philippians 1:27-2:4 After Paul details his personal circumstances as a prisoner in chapter one, verses 12-26, he moves on in his letter to encourage his readers. In the passage before us Paul exhorts the Philippians to steadfastness, unity and humility. First, he calls on his readers to “stand firm” together for the gospel, striving against all opponents in verse 28, through suffering in verse 29, and conflict in verse 30. He then goes on to encourage his readers to engage in a determined oneness of intent in [...]

To Live is to Die

Philippians 1:12-26

Paul begins his letter to the Philippians with a thanksgiving and prayer for the church in verses 3-11. He then touches on his personal situation in verses 12-26. The passage before us reminds us to let Christ be exalted, whether in our day-to-day living, or in the day of our dying.

Size Doesn’t Matter

Philippians 1:1-11

As is typical of Paul’s letters, following the greeting he gives thanks and prays for the welfare of his readers. His thanksgiving is by no means an oblique prayer on behalf of his readers, rather it is made directly to God for the wonderful work he is performing in the Philippian congregation. Paul probably has in mind the financial contribution the congregation i [...]

Know Who You Are

2nd Corinthians 5: 11-21 Knowing who you are can be a hard thing to figure out. But God has given us a book (the bible) to read and discover who we are not only in Christ but in this world.

I Wonder

Mattthew 13:1-9/18-23 Jesus used many stories, or parables, when speaking to the crowds. These stories compare something familiar to something unfamiliar, helping us understand spiritual truth by using everyday objects and relationships. Jesus’ parables compel listeners to discover truth, while at the same time concealing the truth from those too lazy or too stubborn to see it. To those who are honestly searching, the truth becomes clear. We must be careful not to read too much into parables, forcing them to say what they don’t mean. Each parable has a central meaning unless o [...]

We Are Free

ROMANS 6:12-23 In our passage today Paul explains that a person can be subject to only one of two masters; we are either beholden to sin, promoting an ever-increasing burden unto death, or we can listen to God, promoting an abundance of right-living unto life eternal.
