Gunn-Britt Retter lives in the coastal Sami community of Unjárga-Nesseby, northeast Norway. She is a teacher by training at the Sámi University of Applied Sciences and holds a Master's degree in Bilingual Studies from the University of Wales. Since 2001, Gunn-Britt has worked on Arctic environmental issues, first at the Indigenous Peoples' Secretariat (IPS) of the Arctic Council in Denmark and as Head of the Arctic and Environmental Unit of the Saami Council. Hussein Adan Isack, is recognized as a renowned researcher and ethnobiologist. Although science has always been my passion, I gradually shifted my focus to supporting and assisting the indigenous peoples of northern Kenya.
Victoria Tauli-Corpuz was appointed as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples by the Human Rights Council in 2014, and served until April 2020.She is an indigenous leader from the Kankana-ey Igorot people of the Cordillera Region in the Philippines. As an indigenous activist, she has worked for over three decades on building movement among indigenous peoples and as an advocate for women's rights.
Joan is an indigenous activist from the Cordillera with over 20 years of working on indigenous issues from the grassroots to the international level. Her expertise includes areas such as human rights, sustainable development and the environment. She served as Secretary General of the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP) from September 2008 to December 2016. She was appointed as an Indigenous Expert of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (2014-2016) by the United Nations Economic and Social Council. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from UN Environment in September 2018. She was a recipient of the Champions of the Earth; UN Lifetime Achievement Award.
For today's episode our guest is Rukka Sombolinggi. Rukka is the first woman secretary general of the Indigenous Peoples Alliance of the Archipelago (AMAN), the largest indigenous peoples' organization worldwide.
Rukka has a degree from Hasanuddin University's Faculty of Agriculture and holds a master's degree in Political Science from Chulalongkorn University (Thailand).
In our first episode we have as guest, Namaka Rawlins, Nāmaka, originally from Hawaii . All her life she has fought for the revitalization of the Hawaiian language. Namaka has always believed in education as a means of preserving native languages.
