3 packages on your services page might feel logical and flexible.
It might also be the reason your best prospects always pick the option with no brand strategy, and you're convinced clients don't want strategy.
If you've ever built tiered service packages to feel more affordable, flexible or available, this is for you.
In this episode:
• Why "affordable" packages train clients to shop on price instead of value
• Why giving options is costing you sales
• How skipping brand strategy in your "low cost" tiers undermines the authority you're trying to build
• The 3rd way to replace tiered services or a bespoke quote for every single enquiry
Build an offer you fully believe in, and price it like you mean it.

Every designer is feeling the pressure to be faster and cheaper, especially with AI in the mix. But competing on speed and price isn't a strategy, it's a trap.
If you've ever wondered whether brand in a week offers, selling templates, or rock bottom logo packages are just the new reality, this one's for you.
I tackle why the race to the bottom is hurting us as individual designers and as an industry, including:
Position on value, not speed or price, and you'll find yourself in a very different race altogether.

"Mission, Vision and Values" is everywhere in brand strategy. But what if it's not brand strategy at all?
If you've ever completed an MVV exercise with a client and then wondered how to actually turn it into branding, this one is for you.
I tackle why Mission, Vision and Values belongs in a different strategic discipline and what brand strategy actually needs to do instead, including:
• Why MVV produces 'brand narcissism' and leaves the customer out of the conversation
• Replaying a founder's values back to them is the easy gap, not the important one
• The most common brand values are HR documents in disguise
• What a customer-focused brand strategy actually needs to answer
Knowing the difference between founder strategy and brand strategy is the upgrade your clients actually need from you.

The villain strategy is having a moment. But trendy brand strategy concepts are only useful if you know how to use them.
If you've heard about brands defining their "enemy" and thought it sounded good but weren't sure how to apply it for a client, this one's for you.
I tackle the "brenemy" concept and give it the framework it's been missing, including:

• Being vulnerable, building in public, and setting healthy boundaries
• Her thoughts on where the design industry needs to do better
• How being rejected by Chris Do has created an avalanche of opportunities

Designers always want to know... “what am I missing in my brand strategy process?”
Usually it's the same things... the 'hard' skills.
They already have the soft skills.
Asking curious questions, reading between the lines, empathy, and being OK with not having all the answers.
The gap is the technical skills.
Too many designers rely on exhausting questionnaires, over the top avatars and shiny distractions.
In this episode, I break down the three hard skills that make brand strategy clear, usable and genuinely effective.

With so many tools and custom prompts to support AI generated content and solutions, I want to ask if AI can make you more creative.
It can make you more efficient, perhaps more informed. But as brand designers one of our key messages is the importance of originality and ingenuity in brand.
How can we use AI as the creative engine and simultaneously stand by that claim?
Does using AI as a tool to create brand strategy undermine our point of difference, turn us into a curator rather than a creator?

In this episode I share where my first 6 clients came from and what that’s taught me about where to find clients.

First, let’s not call it passive income.
Passive implies no action and I haven’t come across any income that doesn’t require action.

There’s almost no point in focusing on building your brand to stand out if you can’t be found, seen or heard.
In the previous episode (#68), I shared my insights on standing out in a crowded market, focusing on the 4 key opportunities to leverage.
For the next 2 episodes, #69 and #70, I'm sharing the magic little framework I refer to when it comes to being seen and 'standing up'.
It’s made up of 3 lovely little V words… visibility, volume and value.
In this episode I'll share 14 visibility tactics that you can test and try in your business to support your brand and be found by potential clients.
Then in episode 70 I'll take a deep-dive into how to leverage volume and value.

How do you stand out in a crowded industry? That’s probably one of the most crucial questions for any business owner.
Surprisingly the answer is not post more on social media.

Innovation... the magic in your unique method.
Desirability... use your brand style to ensure people believe you can help them achieve the self image they desire.
Relevance & Relatability... becoming the go to expert for your audience.
Cut-Through... cultivate your personal brand.
And don't forget to subscribe or join my 'in the know' list to be the first to know when I share the follow up episode about being seen and heard. Because there's no point in creating a stand-out brand if no one can see you doing it!

Networking needs a rebrand!
It can feel particularly awkward for designers. We're most at home in a creative bubble. So getting out and meeting people with an agenda of business growth feels cringey and unauthentic.
But I think your network is more important than your portfolio, and would love to see more designers feeling inspired and aligned to the idea.

Business legals for designers often only come up when you need to lean on them in a tricky client situation. And if you don't have them in place, it's almost too late to start thinking about them at that point.
My guest on this podcast is Tracey Mylecharane founder of TM Solicitor. She is an unconventional business lawyer who delivers confidence for small business owners.
Tracey has created business legals for designers as well as many other small businesses and in this episode she shares her wisdom on:
• Why your legals are a business essential no matter what stage you're at
• How your legal documents can be an extension of your brand and values
• The importance and impact in creating a professional client experience
• Why templated legal documents are not a good idea
• Which legal documents you need as a minimum
Even the nicest people can turn combative when there’s money involved. So if you’re sitting there thinking 'I don’t need legal protection, all my clients are lovely, it will never happen to me!' Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Something that most designers will realise at some stage in business is not all work is good work!
But instead of getting halfway through a project and realising that, wouldn't it be better to say no to those projects in the first place?
Now I appreciate that's easier said than done. Recognising which clients to say no to off the back of an enquiry or discovery call isn't always straightforward.
But there are some red flags you can look out for which I'll share in this episode.
I also share why getting clear on your values, boundaries, niche and ideal client are foundational when it comes to knowing which projects and/or clients are right for you.
And I talk through a handy response model to help you say no promptly and confidently so things don't drag on or get awkward!
Because the impact of not saying no to the wrong work is considerable when it comes to taking your opportunities, your profit and your well being in your business.

In this off-the-cuff, reflective episode of The C Word Podcast, I explore my very personal musings on what it is to be a female designer.
This episode is inspired by the sentiment of International Women's Day and my view that this day should be a demand for change as much as a celebration of women.
I share some of my own experiences as a female designer and how I think they were influenced by gender bias in the design industry.
I also reflect on what needs to change in the design industry to address the glaringly uncomfortable statistic of how many females enter the industry as juniors versus how many go on to occupy senior positions. It's not pretty!
And finally I share my view on how this bias in agency life impacts those who go on to be female creative business owners. Something I want to help change in my own contribution to the industry.

How do you communicate your value as a designer?
It's a question that comes up a lot amongst the designers I connect with.
Being able to confidently communicate your value is the foundation for feeling more valued and becoming more valuable as a designer.

• What the 5 key elements are you should focus on to articulate your value
• How to communicate that value in the most engaging and meaningful ways

We all know about client onboarding but what about client off-boarding?
It's sometimes the poorer cousin of the onboarding, but an intentional client off-boarding is often an overlooked but awesome opportunity full of potential goodness for your business.
On this episode of The C Word I share why I think it’s something you should pay more than lip-service to and what I think a good off boarding looks like:
• The 3 important jobs of a client off-boarding
• Why projects don't always wrap-up neatly
• The benefits of a well considered client off-boarding process
• 10 questions to ask yourself when masterminding your approach to off-boarding
• What it means to future-expand your business

If you're not earning $100k you're not successful! Of course I don't belief that to be true. Because no one can tell you what you should be earning.
But I received an email recently from a coach and mentor and to be honest it really pee’d me off.
In short it implied just this... if you’re earning anything less than $100k as a designer you're underachieving. You’re just another struggling designer statistic.
And I felt it was important to address everything that's not only wrong, but dangerously misleading about that statement.
So in this podcast I discuss:
• What's wrong in the coaching industry and the marketing constructs of 'cult coaches'
• The real reason coaches talk about money and earnings... spoiler, it's not to benefit you
• Why it's important to set your own financial goals
• Why the revenue figure isn't what you should be focusing on
I also talk very openly about my own challenge to myself as a coach and mentor and how I want to do things not only differently but much better.
This is a ranty one, at times it's a raw one, because I am deeply concerned by what I see sometimes. And I want to talk about it openly because I know it's not just me.

I hear it all the time that you need to ‘show up’ in your business, in your marketing and for your audience.
And I wanted to pick the concept apart. Because I don’t disagree with the sentiment of it, I just think the phrase has become overused and misunderstood.
Very often it just manifests itself as showing your face and the occasional (re)introduction post on social media.
In this podcast, I talk about what the concept of 'showing up' means to me, the ways in which I’ve found it beneficial in my business and how I choose to apply it.

2/ The impact it has on designers creating a business that works for them

In today's episode I'm sharing one of the biggest game-changers for any design business - brand, graphic, web or otherwise. And that is presenting your creative work in person.
This is something I think many designers are reluctant to do. However, I believe it can have such a positive influence on how much your clients value you and the impact you can create with your work.
So I share the key reasons I think this is so important for designers, as well as tackling the key objections I hear from fellow creatives when the subject of presenting your work in person comes up.

How are you with goal setting?
Getting clear around what you want to achieve and how you get there is kind of important in business and in life. But it’s also a bit of a stumbling block for some creatives and visual people.

I’ll share the principles behind my ‘rule of one' goal setting framework, including a simple audit structure and my 'A Frame' for simple, succinct and actionable goal setting you'll see through from beginning to outcome:

Managing change can be one of the trickiest things to navigate, both in life and in business.
In this episode of the C Word Podcast I talk about why change for the better… things like growth, taking advantage of new opportunities or chasing after your dreams and aspirations, can feel so uncomfortable.
It seems like a weird paradox but it’s actually a thing!
I have an open chat about some of my experiences with change because I think it’s important to be honest and transparent about those feelings.
Because sometimes the implication is we should embrace change and feel good about new opportunities. But the emotions around managing change are a grey area. There are mixed emotions. And that’s OK.
In this episode I share some of my own personal stories related to business and life. What they’ve taught me about how change can impact how we feel, and some ways of managing change and the discomfort that comes with it to ensure it doesn’t get in the way of achieving your goals.
The emotions around change are real and raw, and, more often than not, uncomfortable, so prepare for some honest, raw sharing too.

What’s the number one thing that all designers want?
Consistent clients of course! More specifically consistent, good quality clients.
Because what you actually want is the ones that value you, have a desire to work with you because they believe in the upgrade you will create for them and they trust your expertise.
There’s no magic formula for this, it takes work and putting your efforts in the right places.
In this episode of The C Word Podcast I share the 6 C's for getting consistent, quality clients:
1) Community 2) Captivation 3) Charity 4) Clarity 5) Confidence 6) Customer Service

I talk about strategy and specifically brand strategy a lot on The C Word podcast.
And the reason for that is I believe claiming, showing, owning and monetising your strategic side is a huge opportunity for brand-led designers.
It sets you apart, elevates you, makes you more valuable, helps you create a better outcome for your clients and makes you more desirable.
But how and why does it do that?
Well... essentially you want your client to believe you can help them achieve what they want.
That belief makes you valuable to them
And a strategy-led offer and promise bolsters that belief.
There are lots of ways to elevate your strategic offer as a creative.
In this episode I want to share one simple way of doing it. In fact 3 simple ways, because I’m going to share 3 words that can help you think and be more strategic.
Why, If and Because.
And don't forget that if you're interested in joining my Creative Value Incubator program in 2023 now's the time to join the guest list. This is the program to elevate your value as a designer, be perceived as more valuable and feel valued.

Here on The C Word Podcast I like to tackle a whole range of topics, including ones that I get asked about. And this is one of those.
In this episode I talk about what is perhaps one of the biggest conundrums for a brand-led designer and that’s how much should you charge for a logo?
As well as giving you what I think is a watershed fee for logo design (any less and you're devaluing your work and your skill), I’ll dive into the other questions you should be asking yourself.
I want to guide you to do what's right for your business, and remind you what a 'simple logo' is worth to your client and the value you create, so you have that in mind when pricing!

Budget and timeline blowouts are a reality for any creative business at one time or another.
But they shouldn’t be the norm.
I think the main reason they happen is because the stakeholders involved didn’t have realistic expectations in the first place.
In this episode of The C Word Podcast, I share my key tips for stopping or minimising budget and timeline blowouts:
✨Detailed scope – Be clear on the deliverables and what is and isn’t included
✨Clear process - Ensure everyone understands the full extent of what’s involved
✨Step out every stage in detail - If it’s too broad you’ll overlook stages that take time
✨Agree the timelines - Don’t be tempted to truncate or shorten timeframes and be realistic about how long things take
✨Lock it in - Set aside meetings and time to do the work up front
✨Enough time for review, feedback and revisions - Be clear on when the client will get work for review and when they need to respond with feedback
✨Communicate well and often with your client - Give regular updates - Let them know straightaway if something is out of scope or if there are potential delays
✨Penalties for delays - This can be a good motivator to keep your client on track - Give the client plenty of warning and make it clear up front, the relationship is important
✨Hold yourself accountable - Stick to the timeline - Keep your energy up to maintain the momentum

In this episode of The C Word podcast I'm tackling the question of how to cultivate unshakeable belief in your creative work as a designer or brand-led creative.
Having absolute conviction that you will produce work that nails the brief every time can be an ongoing challenge for many designers. It's a skill, like many others, that we need to invest time in developing.
However cultivating that strong belief has an enormous impact on your own self-belief, the sustainability of your business and your growth. In other words, it's worth investing in!
As well as exploring why that belief and confidence in your creative work is so valuable, in this episode I also talk about 5 key principle that I use to develop my own sense of surety and conviction when it comes to my own work:
Trust in the Process
Beware When Seeking Validation
Positive Self-Talk
Know and Celebrate Your Strengths

If you find the prospect of presenting your design work to clients a little bit nerve-racking or uncomfortable, you're definitely not alone.
I think presenting creative work with confidence is something a lot of designers and creatives find challenging.
It’s not a skill we’re necessarily taught in any meaningful way, and designers are left to pick it up as they go.
In this episode of The C Word Podcast, I talk about some of the skills and strategies I've learned that have made me more confident when presenting my creative work. In fact, I'd say I'm pretty good at it these days, but that hasn't always been the case.
Along the way, I’ve recognised that the quality of the presentation is so important to the success of a design or creative project. I’ve learned some key go-to skills to put my best foot forward, and they fall into 3 broad categories which I'll dive into in the episode: 1. Preparation 2. Energy 3. Rationale

In this episode of The C Word Podcast I talk about my own agency experiences as a designer and brand strategist, and share what I had to unlearn after working in creative agencies
I often find designers have an employee mindset in their own business. They struggle to let go of some past habits, beliefs and behaviours they may have as a hangover from freelancer or agency life.
This episode focuses on:
~ What you need to unlearn from being an ‘employee’ in order to graduate into being a ‘creative business owner’
~ The myths and unproductive cultural norms that are perpetuated in ‘agency-land’
~ Some of the key things you may need to learn to be an effective business owner if you didn’t work in an agency or haven’t exposure to some of the business side of things
I also share my own resume and journey to being a creative business owner, which took some surprising and maybe slightly unconventional twists and turns in the early days.
Whether you’re a graphic designer, web designer or brand-led creative that has taken or is planning to take the leap from agency, this is essential listening to prepare you for what might lay ahead. And if you bypassed the agency experience altogether and jumped straight into business there are some juicy insights for you too.

If you’re feeling the pressure of the 'curse' of being in business post circa 2000 – i.e. content creation, blogs, reels, video, carousel posts, lives, nurture sequences, welcome emails and the list goes on, this podcast is for you my lovely!

Mel Daniels is a Content Strategist, Coach and Speaker who loves to understand ‘why’. Mel’s purpose is to teach and empower women who want more from their business, on how to use content in a genuine way. She gives them the confidence they need to become more visible, seen as the expert that they are and inspired to take their business to the next level.
Mel and I talk about:
~ What powerful content is and why it’s so important
~ The most important thing to embrace when it comes to creating impactful content
~ 3 key principles for producing powerful content

In this episode of The C Word Podcast, I talk about the distinction between freelancer and design or creative business owner, because I think it’s an important one.
Not only are they very different, as designers it’s important to know which you are and what you’re getting yourself into as they require very different investments and skills. And when you're clear what you are and what you want to be you can make more informed decisions.
So if you’re starting out in design and you want to be clear on the direction you take, you’re freelancing and you want to make the shift into greater creative, client and financial control, or you’re not sure what you are but think you'd better find out, this episode is for you.
I’ll talk about:
~ The broad options and career paths available to designers
~ The main differences between freelancers and design business owners
~ The ways in which you need to shift your focus if you want to shift gears and step up as a business owner

In this week’s episode of The C Word Podcast I’m tackling the much maligned topic of retainers. More specifically, I ask the question are retainers bad for business?
There’s a lot of bad press and negative content about the poor, unsuspecting retainer and I want to share a different perspective. Because there are always two sides to every story right?
I’ve had a lot of success using retainers as a strategy alongside my core brand strategy and design services. So, I wanted to share my experiences and give you some insight into what worked for me and why.
In this episode I get into the nitty gritty of:
My final word on this is don’t dismiss it straight off the bat. There is a lot of bad feeling and cautionary tales surrounding retainers. However, when done right they can be very good for business.

This episode of The C Word Podcast is an absolute gem.
I’m joined by Jess Roberts, founder of The Who Photography and Design.
Jess has been a photographer for the past 12 years, and what makes her approach so unique is her focus on real, genuine, and true connection
As a creative I have often hidden behind my work and struggled to feel comfortable in front of the camera. Which is why this conversation is so great and so essential, because I believe this is true for many creatives.
In this chat, Jess is her usual warm and funny self. She believes it’s all about a world where it’s not just okay to be who you are, it’s celebrated. She explains why your perceived 'imperfections' are your greatest assets and you should embrace them because that's where true authenticity and connection comes from. And Jess lives and breathes that ethos in everything she does.
We talk about loss of identity, particularly for female business owners, and Jess’s own journey from feeling she didn’t really know who she was a creative to stepping out bolder and brighter.
Jess shares what it really takes to create genuine connection and how that translates in a photoshoot. We also dive into what that connection means not only for stronger, deeper client relationships but also a better relationship with ourselves.
And she also reveals her connection with Ed Sheeran.

In this episode of the podcast I ask the question, ‘Is Canva Damaging Your Brand’? I can already hear the gasps reverberating throughout Australia and beyond!
But don’t be alarmed.
Today is not a Canva bashing exercise. Far from it. Canva is one of the many amazing tools available to support you to be an empowered, independent and effective brand owner.
However, it does come with a ‘graphic’ health warning (pardon the pun!).
In this episode I talk about
Canva as the facilitator not the cause of what I call vanda-branding, which albeit unintentional, is inflicting damage to your brand particularly in a visual sense
The important watchouts when it comes to using design template resources like Canva. And the crucial distinction between using them to expand your brand versus creating your brand
How both business owners and designers can be proactive in managing the role of Canva in the brand landscape to ensure it’s a value add
It’s a little bit controversial and may touch a nerve with some, but I’m here to tell you want you need to hear not necessarily what you want to hear.

In this episode I talk about brand association and the ingenious collaboration between Stranger Things and Kate Bush.
I’ve just finished watching part 1 of Stranger Things Season 4 and loved it.
As a brand consultant, I couldn’t help admiring something else about this season. And that was the inspired choice of the Kate Bush track ‘Running Up That Hill’ as the soundtrack.
It’s a masterclass in brand association.
No spoilers. And you don’t need to be a fan of either. The big take out is how you can intentionally and consciously use brand association to enhance and elevate your brand.
Specifically, I dive into 4 key ingredients for successful brand association:

In today’s episode I’ll be chatting to you solo, and doing a bit of myth-busting about creative business growth.
I’ve taken some time recently to reflect on my business evolution. I wanted to ask myself what some of the things have been that have impacted on my success, both positively and negatively.
And my biggest outtake has been there’s more than one way to grow.
I also believe there are some myths around what you should be doing to grow a creative business. Myths that held me back at times, and stopped me from taking action in ways that I wanted to. Which made me wonder if other creatives feel the same. That maybe there are some misconceptions or misinformation that might be holding you back too.
In this episode I’ll be diving into 6 of those myths:
Myth 1: You need to be a bold, colourful extravert to ‘qualify’ as a creative
Myth 2: You need to have a team of designers
Myth 3: It’s all about your creative work
Myth 4: The client is the boss
Myth 5: It’s all about billable hours and ‘the timesheet’
Myth 6: You need to be a ‘socials butterfly’
As well as breaking open the untruths and problems with these myths, I’ll also talk about some of the things I did to grow my business instead.

In this very first episode of The C Word Podcast, I thought I’d try something a bit cute and quirky, or maybe it’s just a bit weird! We’ll see.
Today I’m interviewing myself.
I’ve picked some of my favourite questions that others have asked me in the past and thrown in some of my own.
My aim is to share a bit more about me so you can get to know the person behind the poddie voice.
So, if you want to know what really gets under my skin, who my spirit animal is and my superpower (as I see it), as well as more about what has brought me here in life and business, lend me your ears.
If there’s anything I don’t ask myself, but you have a burning desire to know, just send me an email to becky@bechughes.com or a DM on the usual socials @bechughesbranding.
