In a world where selflessness is often praised, it is easy to lose sight of our own needs. I was away for a while thinking I had nothing to contribute for a moment, but I quite literally, was drowning in the world around me. Sometimes, we all need a reminder to step back and fill our own cup, worry about ourselves for a bit, and understand it is okay. I struggle with showing up for myself, but I am in a role that gives me the opportunity to lead by example. There is no shame in making mistakes and figuring out the next step forward. More often than not, we need real rest, mental rest, and there is nothing wrong with that. As hard as it gets sometimes, you are not having a bad life, as much as it may feel like it sometimes, often, etc. You will experience a change. So as hard as it gets, here are some soft reminders for us all! <3

Woah! What? A sibling special?! Y’all are in for a treat….sit back and relax because you are in for good vibes and some laughs. They both make y’all a promise, so listen closely. One thing I always think about when it comes to my siblings, in general, but these two in particular is that we are only two years apart, but sometimes that makes all the difference. We talk about some of our fondest memories and what we look forward to from here on out, but we also get to talk about some of the stuff that we didn’t know the others thought. Being the youngest in the family definitely gave me a different outlook on our family dynamics, but I know at the end of the day, I can count on them to be there for me. Whether I am home or across the country, I know they got me, and vice versa. Like I said, yes we are a couple years apart, but we learned so much from each other, allowed ourselves to be inspired by one another, and above all, we really made sure we were on the same page about what it means to be family.

Welcome back to part 2 of our conversation with Marissa Bruce! In this episode, we continue delving into our college experiences and the valuable lessons we learned along the way.

One important aspect we discuss is the significance of friendships during this transformative period in our lives. College is a time where we build those deep connections and create lifelong bonds. Marissa shares her thoughts on the importance of surrounding yourself with a diverse group of friends who inspire growth and push you to become the best version of yourself.

As we navigate the challenges and changes that come with growing up, it's crucial to maintain a healthy mindset. We discuss the power of positive thinking and the impact it can have on our overall well-being. Embracing a growth mindset allows us to view challenges as opportunities for growth and develop resilience in the face of adversity. While personal growth and self-improvement are essential, it's equally important not to lose sight of who we are at our core. We caution against getting too caught up in “fixing” ourselves and emphasize the importance of self-acceptance. By embracing our individuality, we can discover our true selves and pave the way towards personal fulfillment. Remember, life is not just about fixing yourself - it's about embracing your journey and becoming the person you truly want to be!

As promised, Chime in with Jhalisa proudly presents ‘5 Years Later.’ I cannot begin to express what this episode means to me, but here is my start. Thank you to my amazing support system. You all showed up for me on days I could not bring myself to show up for me. I have spent the last 5 years going through SEASONS. What I did not know was that I needed all that time in what felt like the dirt, the dark, struggling to break through, so I could finally feel accepted. What I went through is not to be silenced under any circumstances. Not focusing on the day itself, but everything that followed it. I almost lost myself, but I had people I wanted to be around for a while to see them happy, so I stuck it out. And I’m glad I did. These 5 years have been personal, and where I find myself now is amazing. I will still have ups and downs, but I am not giving up on myself ever again.

To anyone out there that is struggling, that feels like they have no one… you have me, always. You are loved, and I would love to hear your story. You are doing amazing and thank you for being here!

Take the time to reflect on the feedback you receive. Don't just dismiss it or get defensive. Ask yourself, "Does this feedback align with my values and goals?" If it does, consider how you can use it to improve. If it doesn't, politely thank the person for their input and move on. You are going to hear so much throughout your lifetime, so make note of what resonates and leave the rest. The benefit to all of this is that there are perspectives you would have never considered, so embrace it with an open mind and use it to your advantage. But remember, at the end of the day, you know yourself best. Trust your instincts and stay true to your authentic self.

As we settle into the month of June, I wanted to share some of my reflections from the last 5 and a halfish months. Becoming more confident in the workplace and with the podcast was the start of what was to be a time of straight growth. I celebrate myself a lot more these days, and I love who I am. This idea of being “unproductive” because you are not pushing out a product, service, or material accomplishments is so unreasonable. Some of the best times I can recall do not come with a traditional value of success, but it is the time in my life where all I felt was happiness, so I won, I continue to reach what I am after. When we shift the mindset and things start to fall into place, we are given the signs that we are ready to move into that next phase of life. So , here’s to tomorrow!

WOAH! That’s right we got another special guest! My mentor, Thrive After Sports Founder, Taj Dashaun. Taj is an Athlete Transition Coach, for those who do not quite understand what that means, do not worry, I got you. After sports, there is a new title we athletes must find for ourselves, a new direction to go in, and for a lot of us we have no clue how to find it. We know we are still destined for greatness, but how do we find, navigate, and dominate this new field of life we have found ourselves in. This is where Taj comes in and makes an impact. There is no one way to do things, and Taj gives the little push we former athletes can use to launch ourselves into spaces we love and want to be a part of. I found new ways to learn how to be my favorite self because of my time with Taj. So sit back and listen to these gems we are dropping!

Now presenting, the class of 2023! Cue graduation music WOOOOO, so I have just finished up my Master’s Degree at Temple University. I am excited to continue on my journey, wherever that takes me, and as we know this means I am stepping into a new space in life. Last graduation was filled with anxious thoughts about what comes new and the fear of uncertainty, but this graduation feels different. Whereas I still do not know where my next place to call home is, I know things are going to work out for me because I have been building incredible experiences, a community of people who help push each other towards our goals, and opened my eyes to the beauty of doing life together.

There is no easy way to start the journey, you just have to do it. Growing and being in your journey means that you become conscious of various aspects you are responsible for, in your life. What I mean by this is self-regulating some emotions that can cause instinctual/habitual reactions. I want to note that self-regulating emotions is not suppressing emotions. It is understanding there are things you can do to boost yourself up rather than tear yourself down. Make it a point to be your own biggest supporter. Redirects, step backs, rejections, etc. are all opportunities to push toward your goal in the way that fits you best. Also, again, a huge shoutout to all my graduates this year! I am so proud of y’all and cannot wait to see where life takes you next!

Once again, I am at a point in my life journey that something is about to end and the next thing is going to start. The question is…what’s the next thing? I want to apply to jobs but also just the next phase of my internal monologue as well. I have put in the hours of self-love, shadow work, and change my mindset, so what happens after that…whatever you want. This is the beauty in the journey, you get the chance to follow your dream and you have developed yourself to pivot when needed. Define your life by living, not by a label that your ego seeks to place you in a category.

Life comes at us hard. Different experiences, traumas, growing pains, etc. can send us into what I know as autopilot or survival mode. The mental headspace we create to just get through every day. This is no way to live life. I have said it before but life owes us everything and will not give it to us. It can be hard to pull yourself out of that headspace but there are small things we can do everyday to stay present. Whether we are mindlessly scrolling, going through everyday motions, or even living in our daydream, we can take steps to pull ourselves out of that and change direction. I will say it as many times as it takes, but the power over your life belongs to you, and only you. Giving your best everyday is the aim, and the nice part about that is that means everyday looks different, so your best will look different. You are living life, you are not meant to have it perfected.

WOAH, big things are happening! Chime in with Jhalisa is now available on YouTube!!! The other big thing is finding beauty in the storms of life. There is a lot of talk from me about “customizing your lifestyle,” and the adjustment period deals with a lot of grace. You are going to slip up, take a few steps back, recenter yourself, and this is okay, in fact, it is so normal. Give yourself the opportunity to grieve the old you, the you that finally gets to rest from constantly protecting yourself, working overtime, pouring into others without receiving anything in return, etc. Also, remember life is about living and experiencing so yeah mess up, get up and keep going. No matter how “old” you are, you’re still young and going through life for the first time. Healing is not just meant to be uncomfortable, you can grow and heal in the good times as well, so let yourself enjoy each moment.

Time for some self-reflection. Something that I am more aware of now is that if I constantly talk bad about myself, think negative thoughts, and so on, then that is what overflows onto others that allow me in their space or that I allow in my space, which no one wants. While the community is there to support and guide you, they are not your stepping stones to use as pawns. So I often think to myself, do I have qualities that I would want in a friend? These times of self-reflection allowed me to aim my healing in what I find valuable. What each individual brings to the table is something to be cherished, not everyone moves that way.

Hearing the word "authentic" or "authenticity" brings a lot to mind. However, something that really sticks with me is what authenticity really means because there is no way to set that in stone, not in my opinion anyways. I always mention that living true to yourself is what should come first, this is because I used to live for others. There were lots of reasons, but I finally have the desire to live for me because I deserve everything I work towards. Being authentic is not something I believe is easy, and once again, that is life. The hard part of living authentically is how we may think others view us because of it. It is easy said than done but we cannot worry and stress others opinions because chances are they are not contributing to your dreams and the journey, so we cannot hold on to negative weight. We owe to ourselves to allow room for growth and change. As we march through life our mindsets change, therefore the way we choose to live will also incite change.

We go to war every single day. We battle all these external forces, and we are responsible for the way we respond. We have two sides of the spectrum when it comes to this, either react with more "negative" responses such as anger, inflated ego, etc. or the more "positive" responses such as love, kindness, empathy, etc. The version of yourself that is presented to the world is directly related to the side of responses that you feed. It is really easy to react angry, especially when you have been wronged, but it does not get you further in life, or closer to a better result. I will not say “be more positive” or anything like that because again it is not realistic, but what I can tell you is that self-reflection is meant to bring awareness, you are not meant to change overnight or even have a timeline of growth. So be kind to yourself as you continue to fight the long fight. You got this!

Healing is a journey I was not aware would demand so much from me. I knew healing would be expected in life, but I did not know the way I approach healing would be so drastically different from others. I needed (and still need) to unlearn past, unhealthy habits, patterns and behaviors before I could really begin to heal. Self-improvement can seem so daunting and there are so many ways to approach your journey that my best advice to you is to just start. Pick a point and go from there. Do not apologize to anyone for your journey.

Go love being yourself!

Woah SPECIAL GUEST! Join my dad and I as we talk about the idea of the second half mentality and what it means to him. There is also a brief description of what it was like raising us in/around sport, as well as a third party POV as I go on the journey of growing up.  You have two perspectives here in terms of mentality and approach to life in general. My dad growing up through the late 50s was wildly different than what I grew up around. As much as we goof off and get along we have vastly different ideals on some things in life due to what was going on in society at the time. Also just to note, MY DAD is a COWBOY FAN... not I haha. I hope you enjoy the episode as my dad and I get some thoughts out there.

We did it! We really did it. This year has been rough, and it gets said every year but you did not deserve any of the bad things that happened to you. That was not life getting even, it was a form of tough love to bring us closer to our potential. It hurts, I know, but we can now transition into our living chapter. We will always be survivors…but we do not need to keep that job title anymore. We have done the work, so it is time to reap the reward. Thank you 2022 for all the experience and to 2023, I am ready to be unapologetically me.

I often talk about how success is ours to grab, and it is, however some of us, myself included, struggle with letting success happen. We strip ourselves from things we have worked for because we do not think we are deserving of it. This pattern, these behaviors and feelings of “not deserving” something needs to go. We are capable of so much and we could enjoy it too if we allow ourselves to be proud of ourselves. This is a hard cycle to break due to many upbringings of feeling like your successes were meeting the requirement instead of something to be celebrated. Start moving in the way that embodies who you want to be…and then become that person. This involves getting out of your comfort zone and leaving it in the chapters you have already written.

This phrase has seen its time in different spheres of influence, but I will happily relay the message in my own way. When it comes to you and doing well in every and all aspects of your life, you must put yourself first. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. As with most things we grow through, this will not be easy, but it will be worth it. Your best self will vary from day to day, but what matters is that you do your best. Your best one day may check all your to-do list boxes some days, while others may look like resting all day. Both are good, it depends on what you need. We have gotten too used to being so hard on ourselves, so protect your peace first because it is long overdue that you cater to you.

Doing things with your best interest in mind is not always the easiest thing to do. Do not get me wrong, caring about others and doing right by them is also important but not to the point of hurting you. If you look at it this way, if they are hurting you, and that does not hurt them, you are being used. Love yourself enough to surround yourself with those able to keep helping you forward. Not everyone you let go of is going to be out of bad blood, in fact I hope most of the people that you move on from are in mutual agreement for the benefit of both parties. You are not meant to be in everyone's life forever, and the same holds true for others in your life. Be mindful of your dreams as well as others. Learning where you are in others lives is just as important as knowing where others belong in your life.

Life comes at you whether you are ready for it or not. The great part about this is that you have the power of how you respond to it. However, that is not always easy. Too often we get wrapped up in what is going on around us and we just react. As normal and valid as it is to respond how we do, we also can do better by our minds to take a moment before reacting and responding. Taking life one day or even one hour at a time can benefit us much more than stressing over what is to come. Understand there are a lot of physical attributes to what we know as mental illness. Take care of you first, and we can worry about tomorrow when it gets here. It is all a journey so do not feel bad about the steps it may take you do get there.

It can be hard to live your life faster than you are ready for. However, there is nothing wrong with the pace in which you are moving. The community you build around you is for support and love, not comparison. I have compared my life, success, trials, and so much more to those around me, and it made me feel awful. I needed to shake that mentality of comparison because my path is a wild one meant for me, just as the same can be said for each and every one of you. Live life by your time standards because it is your dream you are headed towards.

Growing up I changed what I wanted to be probably a thousand times in a day and if we are honest, I lost count. However, because I changed my mind so much I knew I could be whatever and whoever I wanted to be. This thinking has led me to where I am today. I continue to strive for the happiness of my younger self. I have been hard on myself countless times, I have let fear control me, I have made myself out to be my number one enemy, and I am finished with that mentality. The younger version of myself looked to the future me as a superhero, no matter what the dream ended up being. I owe it to myself, just as you owe it all to yourselves as well to look towards your happiness first. Keep the younger version of yourself in mind before you allow self-doubt, fear, and the word “no” control you. Change the script and reach your dreams!

If you can relate to me, you know the struggle in trying to be the best you can be, every second of every day. With all the chaos, stress and pressure we endure everyday, we cannot afford to add to the haters! You owe it to yourself and your dream to take steps back when you need it, show yourself the utmost care, and let the world prepare for your next stage. I like to remind myself that living life, customizing it to fit me is always going to be the best thing. This means taking control of how you move and how you respond to what life throws at you. Understand that stress, pressure, and burnout can be felt and seen in different ways for everyone, so just because someone seems fine on the outside, does not mean they are. I say this in addition to the content in the episode because we all need more compassion and kindness in this world.

There are so many signs that you are becoming who you are meant to be, and not all of them are nice feelings. Some of them make you feel lost, angry, regretful, etc., but that does not mean it is all bad news. These are signs that you are ready to confront or address what you have experienced, and you are ready to let it propel you into your next stage of life. I will not sit here and act like any of this is easy to do because it takes work, and it demands your attention to do it right. This is not a step in your journey that you can half attempt, you must put your all into it to get results. This is not easy by any means necessary, but we do not need easy, we just need possible. So go forth and accept your power, you can do it!

Hear me out, college sports is not all it is cracked up to be. Although it is a huge accomplishment to get to this space, there is no shame in speaking up about the ugly side of things. There are so many truths that are covered up and put away from the light because it is not glorious and pretty. There is no excuse for things that some/most/all college athletes experience, things that have hurt them deeper than people will ever know. The college athletics system is failing. Athletes, former and current, I encourage you to speak up and join the journey of making change for the generations to come. I hope to be a part of the group that puts a stop to the toxic curse of college sports. Unfortunately, most of us in the group making change are the ones who have or will bear the brunt of how bad college athletics can be, but we have the strength to push forward. This is a huge part of peoples’ lives, and we cannot afford to set them back. Speaking up is the first step.

I know it is said all the time, but you can take a step back and breathe, things will work out. You have the skills to get you to your dream, and you are capable of so much.  There is so much more to celebrate in life, so let’s celebrate it. Being vulnerable is not easy. It takes courage to tell someone what is going on in your head and how you are feeling through life. As hard as it may be, it is something we should all get comfortable with doing. I am the first person to admit guilt of bottling things up until I would explode in an array of emotions. Sometimes those emotions got out of hand and had the potential to ruin connections I had made. Luckily, the friends, family and support I had behind me were not so easily scared. I did it to push people away, but I did not realize I was digging into a dark valley. That support system became a ladder when I finally let them know what was going on with me. Being transparent and vulnerable with people I felt safe with saved my life.

I have said it once, and I will say it a thousand times, building your community with the right people is so important. This includes mentors. Luckily, I made a mentor without trying to, and it has helped me in so many ways. Mentors can help you see through the fog your mind creates. It may be awkward, uncomfortable or even scary at first, but you need mentors in your life. They can change your perspective, see your dream clearer, encourage you, and more, but only if you put yourself out there and help yourself. People will share their experiences with those who ask, as they say “closed mouths don’t get fed.” Huge shoutout to Taj Dashaun, I am very thankful to have him as a mentor.

Support systems are a must. Regardless of whether the people are still a constant in your life or not, they all teach you something and have an impact on you. Similar to the Building a Community episode, these people you surround yourself with are to be picked carefully. Although some may seem great at first, things change, people change, so it is okay to move on from people. There does not have to be bad blood. Family, friends, teammates, etc. are going to help you in various ways. Personally, the support systems I have surrounding me are a safe space that I can be completely vulnerable in because I know I am not being judged or talked about, which in college is huge.

To all of my friends, family, former teammates, coaches, mentors, etc., thank you for helping me.

To those who I have not spoken to in awhile, thank you, and I wish you success.

Forgiving yourself can be hard, but that is a part of life isn't it? You deserve the freedom to push forward towards your future. Pain, heartbreak, shame, will happen, unfortunately there is no way around it, but what we can do is forgive ourselves and enjoy life. I can remember several snapshots of my life where I allowed emotions, other people's actions, etc. to control me and bring me out of character. Forgiving myself has granted me power to regain control over myself and respond accordingly.

Everyday is an invitation to grow. This journey of life we are on simply calls for it. I have been on a path of not only embracing the growth but learning and celebrating every step of the way. No one said it would be easy or the highlight of your life, but it will bring you some inspirational moments. Every aspect of growth can be used to your benefit. Remember, the power is yours!

Life is about trials and tribulations, learning from our experiences, and using them to propel ourselves forward. The same goes for the idea of failure. These moments are another opportunity for growth. Yes, they suck and make us feel bad, but we have the power to change that. Make "failure" work for you!

Taking care of yourself can be really hard. Finding peace and allowing yourself to heal can include a variety of emotions that seem overwhelming. I found that when you are on this journey, you may be at war with yourself, lose or have loved ones fade into the background, and overall you may just feel out of it for a while. However, those moments of discomfort allow you to step into your power. This journey is meant to create the version of yourself best suited to not only handle this power but push you forward to your dreams and ambitions.

Ease into the comfort of knowing where you belong. For quite some time, I did not know what that looked like for myself. Having a true sense of belonging somewhere was foreign to me. I know I had my family, friends and teammates, but those were tied to different parts of my identity. That got me thinking, if I can belong to these different groups simultaneously, I can do that in various other spaces. Not only is that true, but I learned and am currently in the process of creating my own space that I belong to and that others can find a sense of belonging in as well.

It is really easy just to go through the motions of life. I am guilty of this, especially now that I have a lot more time on my hands. Trying to add structure in a variety of ways was just not working, until I realized I needed to make a change in my mindset. Becoming intentional with my words, actions and thoughts has had a huge impact on not only how I view life, but how I choose to go about it. You owe it to yourself to live a life you are proud to live.

As someone who has been an athlete almost all of my life, I can say I have fallen victim to letting "being an athlete" consume me. The idea of losing the ability to say “Jhalisa the athlete” was terrifying. However, I am now embracing the person I get to be. Through a lot of self-healing and soul-searching, I have found peace with who I am and who I am becoming. As athletes we cannot continue to allow ourselves to fall victim to an identity crisis when we eventually leave our sport. It is going to happen and while it may hurt, you are so much more than an athlete.

There is a lot to learn when it comes to growing up and becoming more independent. Advocating for yourself is not something everyone learns at a young age, in college, or even ever. No matter what your circumstances are, it is important to advocate for yourself, be your own biggest supporter, and getting yourself to the next level. This does not mean abandon those who are supporting you, but you need to be able to do that yourself too.

Human connection and building relationships is a HUGE part of growing up. Too often people think being independent means you have to do everything alone. I am someone guilty of it, but life does not have to be gone through alone. Everyone needs a community to call their own. The best part of this is that you get to choose who is in your community. This team you build will pour into you as you pour into them, as you support, love and build each other up.

Thank you for listening and stay tuned for the next episode!
