Park Date: Recent Episodes

Christopher Beanland

Park Date is a brand new comedy podcast about people and parks, presented by Christopher Beanland.

Each episode features original comedy plus an interview with a different guest in a different city park around the world.

Sometimes serious, mostly silly. Pack a picnic blanket.

Guest: Dec Munro

Please welcome Mr Comedy - Dec Munro - to the podcast.

Some of you might know I scratched my itch to do stand up comedy last year and it would not have been possible without the kindness and enthusiasm of this guy. He really did give me the confidence to get on stage that I'd been craving for years and is, like my mum(!), a brilliant teacher.

Dec has taught and advised so many people how to do comedy better and not just idiotic wannabes like me but actual famous comics too - directing shows by Stuart Goldsmith and Lara Ricote to name just a couple. We spoke about his teaching and his directing and what makes good live comedy.

And Dec also gave us a look behind the curtains at the Bill Murray pub - the ground zero of the London comedy scene which has witnessed performances from anyone who's anyone... and me. He told us about how he and his friends at Angel Comedy together opened this amazing venue.

Dec was very sweet in this podcast - asking me questions and even saying that he's had requests to do something like this before but felt like Park Date was the right podcast to spill the tea on. So thanks for talking Dec and see you soon.

Find out more about Dec here and if you're a comedian in need of a director or a person who wants to learnt he dark arts of stand up, I urge you to get in touch. He didn't pay me to say that - but Dec I'll forward my bank details if you want to.

As always GRAZIE to Lucia Scazzocchio, Luke Jones (do listen to his brilliant podcast https://southgirlproductionmusic.com/category/podcast-production/), Rosie Wilby (https://www.instagram.com/breakupmonologues/?hl=en) and Mae-Li Evans for encouragement, production support and advice. There would be no podcast without these people. THANKS GUYS.

Park Date is about mixing the silly with the serious so do listen out for the original comedy we're slotting in between and after the interviews (which are hopefully pretty funny themselves).

Do review, subscribe and like. Namecheck as many trees as possible in your reviews and make them as surreal as possible - I have a very nice prize to give out to the writer of the funniest review.

Guest: Andy Howlett

It's time for another new episode of Park Date

Please welcome Andy Howlett. Now this is something a little different... we recorded this chat for my When Harry Met Telly podcast series about the infamous film Telly Salavas Looks At Birmingham. We'll still do something with that... but I thought in the meantime you might like to hear the full chat between Me and Andy.

Well we recorded in a park so I think it counts! It was in Kings Heath Park, south Birmingham - famous as the location of the BBC Gardener's World garden and where I used to smoke ciggies with my girlfriend Anna (hi Anna!) a lot of years ago.

Andy tells me about his amazing film Paradise Lost, about the brutalist library in Birmingham and the Paradise Circus complex that obsessed me too and features in my novel The Wall in The Head. We talk about films, the city, skating and public space.

It's time for another new episode of Park Date

Please welcome David Ellis. David and I chatted about what makes a liveable city and how transport clicks together, from biking to trains. We talked before I did a book talk in Leeds, which I always love to do.

And some uni memories came flooding back - I lived here for 3 years while I was studying.

Thanks to David for being a great book talk host. And thanks Jack and the brilliant Hyde Park Book Club where I've done two talks now. I will have another book out next year and will be back at HPBC I'm sure :)

Guest: Catherine O'Flynn

It's time for another new episode of Park Date

This time, well what can I say? Catherine O'Flynn rightly won the Costa First Novel Award for her exceptional debut What Was Lost. The News Where You Are was even better. Honestly I would love to write a screenplay or a TV version of these books, they are just so, so good and I can imagine them bursting into life on screen.

So it was an absolute honour to spend an hour with Catherine talking about her work and about Birmingham, and you know what? She is an absolutely lovely as well. Meeting the people whose work you love and then they're also so kind and generous - priceless.

Catherine, I'm so sorry for keeping you out in the cold for this one in Birmingham's Cannon Hill Park! We chatted before we did a cool event at Mac showing some classic Birmingham TV shows. And of course we talked about these and about Cliff Richard hover crafting under Spaghetti Junction and Telly Savalas's Looks At Birmingham too.

I'll be back at Mac doing another 'Brum on Screen' in November at Square Eyes TV Festival, this time with another special surprise guest. Keep your eyes peeled for more info soon!

Guest: David Baldwin

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY

And Happy holidays wherever you are in the world

David Baldwin and I experienced something of A Christmas Carol car crash moment when we both found ourselves killed in surreal circumstances in the run up to Christmas. TEARS PLEASE. A film projector fell on his head and a bucket of prickly pears fell on mine.

But it's not all bad because we came back from the dead as two grumpy ghosts of Christmas past. We rose from our slumber in St Mary's Churchyard in Moseley on the eve of Christmas and decided to have a little haunted chat about this and that as we strolled betwixt trees and grave stones on a misty and frosty December night.

We reflected on Telly Savalas's incredible true life ghost story Then we went for a curry at Kebabish.

Enjoy the holidays and cuddle your loved ones. Hope you all had a great 2023. Park Date was very touched to be nominated twice for Best Comedy and Best Books podcast in the UK Independent Podcast Awards this year.

We'll be back with more cracking episodes in the New Year. Peace x

It's time for another new episode of Park Date

Ok I thought I'd try something different and record some on the hoof meanderings while I criss-crossed the Uzbek capital of Tashkent with some fellow fans of Soviet modern architecture and design. Then we head out of town to see the weirdest thing I've possibly ever seen - a USSR science project helmed by a 20 storey high sunscope on a mountainside in the desert. A bit fell off and nearly killed me. What a trip.

It's time for another new episode of Park Date

Please welcome my friend and brilliant music journalist and now running writer Mr Raziq Rauf (and his son Alexander!)

We messed about outside Beverly Hills Police HQ recreating shots from Beverly Hills Cop then hung out in Beverly Hills Park to talk about Raz's mission to save the butterflies of LA and stalking Ben Affleck on the TMZ tour. Alex lost some colouring pencils along the way - can you look out for them, thanks.

Cheers to the Beverly Hilton for their help on this one. They were filming Minx in the pool when I was there - you should go and watch it. Hoping to have Ophelia on the podcast one day :)

It's time for another new episode of Park Date

Please welcome Marvin Mangalino. Marvin reminded me of 90s cartoon hero Rude Dog from Rude Dog And The Dweebs. He's a cool dude who runs a bike clothing brand called BBUC and opened one of Vienna's coolest hotels which is crammed with retro stylings and is called Brillantengrund. We went inside to take a look - a first for the show!

We had a great chat in one of my favourite cities - Vienna!

DANKE Helena and everyone at Visit Vienna who helped with this episode.

It's time for another new episode of Park Date

I caught up with the legend that is Dane Baptiste at the Edinburgh Fringe in Aug 2023 right in the heart of the city in Princes Street Gardens

And this is what we talked about. Enjoy! There are SOME SWEARWORDS IN THIS, be warned

As always there was a cacophony in the background - drummers, piping bands, tourists, birds, traffic, trams, sirens, wind. Please bear with the ambient noise people, it's festival time!

Dane is going on tour so don't miss him in the UK, UAE and Sweden - LIQUORICE LAND! Oh dear Dane

Ben has just been doing a global launch for Christine & The Queens' new album with PbPb, which is cool. Christine & The Queens have also been curating this year's Meltdown at the Southbank Centre in London. In fact I was at Meltdown last night watching the frankly amazing Warpaint.

Location: Streatham Cemetery

London

Guest: Mark Thomas

It's time for some new episodes of Park Date. Hello PEOPLE

Mark Thomas tells us which park he had his first snog in and then we talk about the history of Streatham Cemetery and other South London parks, plus Mark shares some anecdotes and tells us what he's up to next. And one thing you won't want to miss is his Gaffa Tapes show at Edinburgh Festival in August. Thanks to the wonderful Bex for organising this one :)

Location: Barangaroo Reserve

Guest: Timothy Gray

It's the final episode of Season 3!

And what better way to go out than with this great dispatch from Sydney. I'm joined by Timothy Gray - poet, radio presenter, musician, guide, cultural ambassador, elder and all around good guy. Tim is a Gumbayngirr/Wiradjuri/Bidjigal man based in Redfern, Sydney.

We strolled through Barangaroo Reserve on the shores of Sydney Harbour, talking about the history of this poignant place near to where the British first arrived in Australia. We talk about the stories of the area and its transition from docks to park, about art and about natural landscapes, spirits, ghosts, cultures and politics - and the people who've lived longest on this island. Thanks so much for contributing Tim.

I hope you loved this season. Stay tuned for SEASON FOUR - coming this summer!

And don't forget to check out my new book City Parks, which is out this week! :)

Guest: Rolando Pujol

Well this one was a joy. The wonderful Rolando Pujol from ABC 7 TV talks to me as we stroll through Central Park in New York City. We chat about the mom n pop shops, diners, drive-thru, dives, malls, motels and mid century design that inspired him to create his Retrologist newsletter and website. Oh and how the media and news landscape has changed!

Rolando, we gotta make a movie where we drive across America looking at Pizza Huts, Arby's, Arthur Treachers and all the rest, while staying in vintage motels like the Starlight. Are you in?

A SPOOKY SPECIAL EPISODE FOR HALLOWEEN......

Location: King Kong Park and St Paul's Square

Birmingham

Guest: David Baldwin

My comedy companion David Baldwin re-animated himself, dragged his torpid body from the tomb in which he sleeps, and scampered out of his stately pile - Solihull Castle - to grace us with his presence in the less salubrious surroundings of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter as we pondered the King Kong Kopy, the weird little temporary park it sat in and the backstreets of the industrial city.

Scary statues were one thing - but in the St Paul's Graveyard we talked about the Exorcist and saw a half bull-half human as things began to get weird. Then at the end - well, you'll have to listen. Because I haven't heard from or seen him since....

David Baldwin WAS a comedy writer, journalist and film programmer

NB we recorded this in July so yes the Halloween theme is slightly stretching it

NB2 Who thinks I should make the Telly Savalas podcast?

NB3 On Site WILL be my next podcast, live from various building sites :)

As always GRAZIE to Lucia Scazzocchio, Luke Jones (do listen to his brilliant podcast https://southgirlproductionmusic.com/category/podcast-production/), Rosie Wilby (https://www.instagram.com/breakupmonologues/?hl=en) and Mae-Li Evans for encouragement, production support and advice. If you have a poster of Radio On like me then you'll love this one. Chris Petit talks about road movies, cars, music and noirish novels set against a backdrop of political posturing and cultural laziness. Chris worked with Iain Sinclair on London Orbital and Iain put me in touch. Thanks Iain!

Chris been active in the underground since the 70s in journalism, film, art, books and ideas and is a true original.

It's time to speak to William Hanson about being more polite. You'll know him from Help I Sexted My Boss, which he presents with Radio 1's Jordan North. I know him from a wild week in New York a few years ago(!) And if you have the cash you can hire him as your own personal Henry Higgins.

We strolled round Kensington Gardens avoiding the wind (AGAIN) and dead birds being eaten (AGAIN) while we spied a royal helicopter and talked about using Monkeypox as an excuse to get out of a wedding. Hmmmm.

We recorded this episode back in summer before the sad death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Guest: Travis Elborough

You should read Travis Elborough's books about such things as buses, the seaside, glasses and vinyl records. But in this chat we look at - what else - parks! We chat calmly like adults as we stroll through Butterfield Green. Then he mentions he met JG Ballard and I lose my sh*t. Thanks Travis. See you at The Mildmay Club soon for a drink, I promise.

2MANYCHRISES

Chris Beanland x Chris Grimley B2B!

Oh boy are you going to be into this special Season 2 episode from Boston in the US of A. I went to do a talk about my Unbuilt book and my novel The Wall in The Head at Chris Grimley's gallery Pink Comma in the South End and a few days later we met up again to walk around a typical American urban park located just across the road. It was a blast.

Peters Park is located in a famous Syrian/Lebanese neighbourhood of the city. I love the little league pitches and basketball courts you see across the country, and the dedicated dog zones especially for this nation of dog nuts. Chris was a wonderful and warm host who made me feel right at home in his adopted hometown as we talked about football, TV, books and architecture.

Chris and I shot the breeze about our shared love of brutalist architecture and how he suggested that Boston rebrands its concrete colossi as HEROIC in his book of the same name. He did the excellent Blue Crow Map of Brutalist Boston and has books on Pittsburgh and Marcel Breuer too.

He also got my Mrs Maisel reference off the bat - I loved when Jane Jacobs appears as herself in that excellent show. I sort of want to write a screenplay about Jane Jacobs and Robert Moses. Shall we do that, Chris?!

As always GRAZIE to Lucia Scazzocchio, Luke Jones (do listen to his brilliant podcast https://southgirlproductionmusic.com/category/podcast-production/), Rosie Wilby (https://www.instagram.com/breakupmonologues/?hl=en) and Mae-Li Evans for encouragement, production support and advice. Guest: Hannah Van Der Westhuysen

SEASON TWO IS HERE

And who better to kick off than the brilliant Hannah Van Der Westhuysen. Star of Fate: The Winx Saga, and many more besides. We talked about stage versus screen acting, fave children's TV, young people's values, saving the world and Edinburgh Festival - where we recorded. Hannah was in Ben Norris' play Autopilot, where she absolutely killed it onstage.

I said I hadn't performed at Edinburgh but I technically have - at the 2015 Book Festival! However, maybe it's time to do stand up in 2023 though as my life is such a... JOKE. Geddit?

It was very windy; there's not much I can do about that - before you start writing to Points of View. I hope you enjoy though. Hollyrood is stunning and I walked up Arthur's Seat the next day.

Hannah - everyone time I walk past the Dalston Hat I think of you haha.

Some more blah blah show notes here. Do you read these? Tweet me the word PALINDROME @parkdatepodcast or @chrisbeanland to say a big YES and I'll come round and gift you a punnet of strawberries and a can of squirty cream. Even better, I'll put the squirty cream ON the strawberries, climb a ladder, smash a window and fling the whole soggy lot into your bedroom.

Anyway Lucy Bright is the heroine of this episode. A music industry veteran who now works on films with people like Chris Morris and Shane Meadows, she knows everything about movies and music.

Here us walk on the very spots where HARRY STYLES HARRY STYLES HARRY STYLES FOR SEO PURPOSES LOL walked when he shot a video at the Barbican recently. And hear a cocky squirrel do a runner with our pastries. Furry b*stard.

Welcome to Park Date!

On this episode of Park Date, Helen Coffey and some idiot called Christopher Beanland walk around London Fields fresh from their dip in the lido next door. Up for discussion: how to meet sexy singles when you're on the road, why Before Sunrise is the best travel movie ever made and why trains and boats beat planes... oh and which is the best flavour of Bacardi Breezer.

Ignore the bit where a golden retriever does a whoopsey right in front of us. Its owner certainly did. Enjoy!

Welcome to Park Date!

On this episode of Park Date, Rosie Wilby and Rosie's dog Dolly chat with me about break-ups, monogamy, marriage, and model aeroplanes. Plus we spy horses and hear the sound of something like a village fete but which I later realised was actually the noise of the crowd at Bromley FC.

Rosie Wilby is an award-winning comedian, author and podcaster who has appeared many times on BBC Radio 4 programmes including Woman's Hour, Saturday Live and Four Thought. Her first book Is Monogamy Dead? was longlisted for the Polari First Book Prize and followed a trilogy of solo shows investigating the psychology of love and relationships. Her new book The Breakup Monologues is based on her acclaimed podcast of the same name and is published globally by Bloomsbury. She is on Twitter @rosiewilby and Instagram @breakupmonologues

Do listen to Rosie's podcast The Break Up Monologues and buy the book too.

Welcome to Park Date!

On this episode of Park Date I talk to star of Celebrity University Challenge, Felicity Cloake, about breakfasts and brown sauce before things take a turn for the surreal as we discuss a woman who chucks chicken pieces over the fence into the children's playground at her local park. Felicity and I exchange some bizarre gifts at the end - honestly the bit with these pressies is the best thing I've recorded so far I think. Enjoy!

Guest: Kate Wills

Welcome to the first episode of Park Date!

First I need to say a huge thank you to Lucia Scazzocchio, Luke Jones (do listen to his brilliant podcast https://southgirlproductionmusic.com/category/podcast-production/), Rosie Wilby (https://www.instagram.com/breakupmonologues/?hl=en) and Mae-Li Evans for encouragement, production support and advice. There would be no podcast without these people. THANKS GUYS.

Our first episode features a dead pigeon plus journalist, leather jacket brand ambassador, fellow blonde bombshell and travel addict Kate Wills. That's all you need to know.

Ok well the dead pigeon was not part of the plan but that's what you get when you're recording as live and on the fly (no more flying for that pigeon though). That's the idea of Park Date - not dead birds, but capturing a raw and authentic experience of just chatting and exploring as you do with friends or on an actual park date.

Kate is a great writer and great friend and you should read her book A Trip of One's Own, available now (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trip-Ones-Own-heartbreak-travelling/dp/1788704304) and check out her journalism in The Evening Standard, Grazia and Fabulous Magazine. We talk about writing from and about the heart, and the female solo travel pioneers she tells the stories of in her book.

You can often find me and Kate swimming on the roof at Shoreditch House or hanging in Victoria Park with her cute daughter Blake and her husband Guy, who is much cooler than me. We are going to write a film together though, aren't we Guy? ;-)

Park Date is about mixing the silly with the serious so do listen out for the original comedy we're slotting in between and after the interviews (which are hopefully pretty funny themselves).
