Welcome back to another episode of the “Figure It the Father Out” Podcast! Today, we have the pleasure of having a New York Times Best Selling Author, Jessica Lahey, on the pod with us.

Jess speaks to parents, educators, school administrators, coaches, pastors, and community leaders about the science of learning, motivation, engagement, and substance abuse prevention, all in service to the belief that adults have the power to help kids become more autonomous, competent, connected, and fulfilled. Her first book, The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed was a New York Times bestseller and has empowered so many to strengthen home-school partnerships, support kids as they learn from their mistakes, and forge stronger, more trusting relationships with children. Her second book, The Addiction Inoculation: Raising Healthy Kids in a Culture of Dependence is the culmination of Lahey’s experience as an alcoholic with a decade of recovery, the parent of two kids, and twenty years in the classroom teaching English, Latin, and writing in every grade from six to twelve and five of those years were spent teaching in an inpatient drug and alcohol rehab for adolescents. She recently won the Research Society on Alcohol’s Media Award, “designed to recognize outstanding journalistic efforts of writers who cover empirical research on alcohol.”

Tune in for an insightful and inspiring discussion on how we can better support our children's journey of growth, both academically and personally.

Welcome to episode number 16 of the FITFO Podcast, where I have conversations with amazing dads, moms, and thought leaders of all different industries to help me figure out how to become the father I want to be for my young girls.

I'm pumped to have you all here for another amazing conversation and this is another first for me, having a husband and wife duo on the pod. These two are accomplished authors, high achievers in their respective industries, new parents and all around resilient individuals who have overcome alcoholism and drug addiction together.

Sarah Alaimo is a Career Happiness Coach specializing in serving women in recovery. Sarah is also an International best-selling author, Human Resources leader and Recovery Advocate. She is a Southern California native massively deprived of sunshine while living in the Pacific Northwest. She is a mom to baby son Jack and one-eyed black Pomeranian, Baron. Among her favorite things in life, she would list ice cream, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim baseball, travel adventures and of course, John. While she would love to say that she has learned moderation since getting sober in 2015, the fact that she listed ice cream before her husband really says it all.

John has over twenty years of professional experience developing solutions that improve operational excellence across multiple industries. He is a connector of people and ideas and a passionate innovator invested in pioneering initiatives that contribute to meaningful change.

He is also a veteran of the US Navy, identifies with having both apparent and non-apparent disabilities, is neurodiverse, and is inrecovery from a history of mental illness all of which play a key part of who he is and the value he delivers. As a result, John has become a leader advocating for mental health and disability inclusion driving innovations across government, healthcare, and business to help create a culture shift with how employees are supported in the workplace.

John serves as the Vice President of Amazon’s People with Disabilities (AmazonPwD) Affinity Group and is the Founder of Amazon's Mental Health & Well-Being Affinity Group. He holds a BS in Nuclear Engineering Technology and Graduate Certificate in Systems Design and Management from MIT.

Welcome to Episode #9 of the FITFO Podcast. My guest for this episode is Dr. Dana Suskind. She is the best selling author of Thirty Million words (a must read for all parents!) Founder and Co-Director of the TMW Center for Early Learning + Public Health, Director of the Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program, and Professor of Surgery, Pediatrics, and Public Policy (affiliate) at the University of Chicago.

As a surgeon, social scientist, and leading authority on the role parents and caregivers play in promoting children’s healthy brain development, Dr. Dana Suskind approaches her fight against this nation’s opportunity gaps from a unique and rich perspective rooted in the knowledge that science can and should be the basis for social change.

Dr. Dana Suskind’s career, which began in the operating room, evolved when she observed profound inequities among her patients, with some thriving after receiving a cochlear implant, and other struggling to meet their intellectual potential. Recognizing the critical importance of early language exposure on the developing child, she founded the precursor to the TMW Center for Public Health + Early Learning (the Thirty Million Word Initiative) in 2008. Since then, Dr. Suskind and her team have designed, delivered, and rigorously evaluated cutting-edge programs that help parents and caregivers harness the power of their language to build children’s brains and shape their futures.

Once profiled in The Chicago Tribune’s “Remarkable Woman” series, Dr. Dana Suskind is the author of over 50 scientific publications , the “empowering” and “beautifully written” Thirty Million Words: Building a Child’s Brain (Dutton, 2015) and Parent Nation: Unlocking Every Child’s Potential, Fulfilling Society’s Promise (Dutton, 2022). She is a member of the American Academic of Pediatrics and a Fellow for the council on Early Childhood. Her work has been profiled by numerous media outlets, including The New York Times, The Economist, Forbes, NPR, and Freakonomics.

Hello Everyone, my name is Bryan Verduzco and I want to welcome you to the FITFO podcast where I am going on a journey to figure out how to be the father I want to be for my two beautiful young daughters. I'm not sure if you’re familiar with the traditional acronym, but it stands for figure it the f*ck out and I couldn't think of a more applicable phrase as a parent, I'm sure you can relate. That's why I am going on a mission of discovery by interviewing every day dads, miraculous moms, educational thought leaders, health industry experts and parents from all walks of life, in hopes to somewhat figure this whole fatherhood thing out…

As parents we naturally have an internal drive to give our kids the best life possible and set them up for success, however you may choose to define it. While there is no book, podcast or piece of advice that can truly prepare you for the challenges parenting presents, my hope is to expose you to different styles, approaches and tactics to do the best you can.

That's what this podcast is all about, Figuring It The "Father" Out, so we all can show up as the best possible parent we can be. I plan to discuss topics from setting up a 529 plan to budgeting for diapers, child psychology and the terrible twos, nutritional tips and holistic approaches to health, instilling an entrepreneurial mindset and grit, and even how to fight off the dad bod.

So I hope you'll join me on this journey of discovery, and let's figure some shit out together!

Please leave a rating and write a review to help spread the word, it would mean the world to me!
