In this episode, we're thrilled to feature Ontario's own Chantal Demers, whom we have fondly declared as the "Queen of FKTs". Chantal has held an astonishing 37 Fastest Known Times (FKTs) since 2015 and recently captured the Oak Ridge's 271 kilometre self-supported FKT in an impressive three days, seven hours, and 21 minutes.
Chantal shares her journey from basketball and triathlons to her transition to trail running which included a remarkable recovery from a traumatic spinal cord injury in 2005.
We also dive into her creative strategy and success of breaking up Ontario's Bruce Trail into 9 individual FKTs and her future plans to tackle new trails, both in the U.S. and potentially across the pond in Europe.

Hey, everyone! We're back with another exciting episode of the Gotta Run Podcast. It's been a busy two weeks in the world of Gotta Run Racing, and we're thrilled to bring you all the action from the Sulphur Springs Trail Race, Canada's oldest ultra, which was vying for a Western States 100 qualifier.
We kicked things off with a recap of our Lost Treasure Trail Race in Mansfield, which went off without a hitch. Then, we headed to Ancaster, Ontario, to witness history in the making at Sulphur Springs Trail Race. With over 250 runners in both the 100K and 100-mile races, the stakes were high, trying to be the first Ultra Race in Ontario to be a Western States 100 qualifier and the atmosphere was electric.
In this episode, we bring you interviews with top finishers, and many enthusiastic participants. You'll hear firsthand accounts of the race, the challenges faced, and the incredible stories of determination and triumph. From the youngest finishers to seasoned ultra veterans, every runner had a unique tale to tell.
We also delve into the Canadian favourite butter tart debate—raisins or no raisins? And explore the community spirit that makes trail running so special. Despite the crazy weather, including torrential rain and muddy trails, the runners' resilience shone through, making this event truly unforgettable.
Join us as we celebrate the incredible achievements at Sulphur Springs and look ahead to our upcoming adventures, including our races at Rainbow Trail Run and Island Lake Classic. Don't miss out on this epic episode filled with inspiration, laughter, and the pure joy of trail running.
Ontario now has a Western States qualifier, congrats to the race directors of Straw Dog Racing for successfully achieving this for our strong ultra community.
Until next time, keep running and stay inspired!

Norm and Jodi are Gladiators! That's right, we recently completed the 62K course at Ultra Trail Vipava Valley in beautiful Slovenia which is themed around an epic battle that took place in this region over 1600 years ago.
In this episode we chat about how we chose this particular race and our experience from race kit pickup to crossing the finish line.
It all started with Gladiators leading us out from the start line to unpredictable weather, whiskey shots to muddy descents and everything in between!

We are off to Slovenia soon to race the Ultra Trail Vipava Valley UTVV for short on April 27. It will be our first time there and it came on our radar after our chat with Canadian Galen Reynolds in Episode 81 who lives and trains near the capital, Ljubljana.
Since we know very little about this part of the world or these trails we figured why not ask someone who has run the course, so we reached out to runner Anze Sobocan who not only has run the race but has completed every distance this event has to offer including several podium finishes.
Anze is 39 and a member of Team Salomon Slovenia. He has racked up quite a few race results in a relatively short period of time including many events in Slovenia and neighbouring countries of Croatia and Austria.
We chat about the Istria 100 which has the oldest start line in the world at 3000 years old and the Swiss Ultra Tour Monte Rosa 100 miler his hardest race to date and then of course, Ultra Trail Vipava Valley UTVV.

Returning to the podcast is Ihor Verys. Based in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Ihor is the first Ukranian-Canadian finisher and ultimate winner of the 2024 The Barkley Marathons!
Ihor has been very busy since we last spoke to him after his Fat Dog 120 win in 2022 including runner up at Big’s Backyard World Championship running over 715k last year and a win at Hurt 100 this year.
We touch on a few key elements from those two races and then dive into The Barkley Marathons. In a year that saw five finishers in total including the first woman, Jasmin Paris, Ihor was the winner in 58 hours, 44 minutes.
After spending just a short time with Ihor virtually, it is obvious to us that he is an incredible human being and true ambassador for ultra running.
We wrap up our chat with a light-hearted rapid-fire segment so be sure to listen to the end.

The Sulphur Springs Trail Race is a 20K loop course, in the Dundas Valley Conservation Area just outside of Hamilton, Ontario that has been running for more than 30 years, making it the oldest running Ultra Marathon in Canada! Distances offered include 10k up to 100 miles.
This year, the race seeks to become Ontario’s first Western States 100 qualifier - which would be a huge accomplishment - so we reached out to the trio of Race Directors from Straw Dog Racing which includes Steve Connor, Mauro Campanelli, and Russell Thacker, to get their insights on the legacy of this iconic spring race and how they are approaching the challenge ahead.

Ragna Debats of the Netherlands (living in Spain) put in a stellar performance at the 2023 Javelina 100, placing 2nd and punching her golden ticket for the 2024 Western States Endurance Run.
Ragna will be returning to Auburn next June to try and better her current masters record of 17:41 where she places 3rd in 2021.
She has won some pretty incredible races around the world including Istria 100, Transgrancanaria and Marathon Des Sables but we were particularly intrigued with an epic journey she took with her family a couple of years ago called Rolling Mountains.
You can check out their journey, which included racing and training all around the world, on YouTube - it is both inspiring and motivational - https://www.youtube.com/@rollingmountains3868

He started running ultras in 2018 by completing his first ever ultra the Haliburton 100 in his home province of Ontario.
After that he finished first at the Canadian Death Race and Black Spur, both Sinister Sports events.
He was the fastest Canadian at this years Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc with a time of just over 25 hours.

We came across Aaron's profile on Instagram @irunovermountains and it peaked our interest; he's a content creator, ex-pat from Northern Ireland spending his time between London and Chamonix and he's addicted to mountain running!
Aaron has competed in several UTMB series events including TDS, CCC and of course the iconic 100 mile distance UTMB twice.
This past August, he took on the Swiss Alps 100 and then headed over to Chamonix during UTMB race week to capture all of the hype and excitement.

Jocelyn Briggs is a personal trainer, coach and ultrarunner living in Whitby, Ontario.
We met her when she volunteered at our Fiddle50 event this past June and learned that she would soon be taking on the iconic Hardrock 100 miler after earning her final ticket (after several years of trying) at the Bigfoot 200.
After the highs and lows of Hardrock 100, she had a secret 200 race planned in her back pocket; the inaugural The Divide 200 taking place in September in the Canadian Rockies.
Jocelyn describes how her love for running and goal setting has evolved after going through many changes to her body, mindset and training strategies.
What's next on her bucket list? Tune in to find out!

Norman finally made it to the start line of the UTMB after reading about it in a magazine fifteen years ago. The idea of running through 3 countries, (France, Italy, Switzerland) has been on his mind ever since.
This is his race recap and Jodi’s perspective of race crewing (well, kinda).
Listen to hear his thoughts on the start line atmosphere, climbing over 10,000 metres, sleep deprivation, hallucinating, cutoffs, two sunrises and finally crossing the finish line!

Our final day came upon us a little sooner than anticipated (weather was expected to rapidly change from the extreme heat to a lot of rain/thunderstorms) but we made the most of it!
We enjoyed another mostly downhill day from La Fouly to Champex-Lac (dubbed Little Canada).
Stayed in a hostel for the first time ever (and possibly last)
Arrived to spectacular views in Chamonix before the rain and cooler temps.
Now it's time to rest for Norms UTMB race. Stay tuned for that upcoming recap episode.

Said arrivederci to Italy, Bonjour to Switzerland today! Headed out from Val Ferret just outside Courmayeur and climbed almost 800 metres in about 6K to arrive at the Grand Col Ferret bordering the two countries.
Lush mountainsides, herds of sheep and more cowbell please!
Oh, and finally some epic downhill running - WOOT!

Off to a fresh (and earlier) start on Day 2 from Courmayeur. Our itinerary included an 18K day with a long climb in the first 5K.
Met some interesting people on the trail, many of whom were circumnavigating Mont Blanc in 10-14 days and were shocked to learn of the runners who could do it in less than 24 hours!
Literally ran into one of our recent podcast guests, Priscilla Forgie! She is set to toe the line at CCC next week.
More spectacular views and scorching heat as we finished the day somewhere in the Val Ferret region.

We arrived in Courmayeur from Geneva and got right down to business!
An 8K 'shakeout' run was on the itinerary and we figured it would be a great way to get our flatlander legs warmed up.
Little did we know that it would be a lesson in map and sign interpretation, steep climbs (with rewarding views) and oppressive heat.
We learned some important takeaways for Day 2, bring more nutrition and always pack toilet paper!

Jennifer St. Amand, a 48-year-old ultrarunner from Dexter, Minnesota, originally from the east coast of Canada, was the final finisher at the 2023 Western States 100, finishing with 21 seconds to spare.
We discuss a couple of her ticket races where she had impressive results; Superior 100 and Lean Horse 100.
Her WSER experience was a roller coaster of emotions from fighting cutoffs, never-ending climbs and a unknowing spotlight in the Golden Hour - which she hadn't heard of before she became the final finisher!

Ultrarunner and coach Robbie Britton recently broke the 24-hour British record which has stood since 1982! He covered a distance of 277.439 km in a 24-hour continuous race, involving laps of Ruffini Park, in Turin. He gives us insight on how he was able to achieve this amazing feat.
His thirst for adventure has led him on some incredible journeys including a 650km record breaking crossing from north to south of Jordan with fellow British ultra runner Dan Lawson in 2019. The film Lost Dogs & Englishmen captures this adventure perfectly.
We talk about his book 1001 Running Tips for every runner (a must read!) and we discuss the excitement building around the World Mountain and Trail running championships in Austria later this week.

Amanda will attempt to break the Canadian 24 hour record in December at Desert Solstice in Arizona where she will toe the line with the likes of Camille Herron.

In this double feature, Norman and Jodi take you down memory lane; recapping all of the memories from 10 years of Chase the Coyote Trail Race in Mono, Ontario.
It was the first race they ever directed and they reminisce about the early days up to the very last finisher....
Neil Baird started running in his early sixties but he didn't waste any time getting up to the ultra distance. From a 5K run clinic in 2017 to a 50K trail race in 2022, his rise to ultra is no small feat.
He is proof that it's never too late to start. Although he is built for sports where height is a benefit (he is 6'6"), he didn't play team sports growing up as he felt he was too clumsy.
In this episode, we chat with Neil about completing all of the distances at Chase The Coyote event starting with the 12k, then the 25k and finally the 50k. He holds the title of the final finisher at the very last running of the event.

Caroline Wiebe, was inspired by Marathon Des Sables after reading a book by a previous finisher.
“I just thought I could never do that,” Wiebe said. After she started running ultramarathons eight years ago, she met a former winner of the event at a presentation, who convinced her that she could finish the MDS.
She wanted to compete at the Marathon des Sables to celebrate turning 50 but COVID threw that plan out the window. She made it happen in 2022, finishing the 250k stage race in 55hrs. We chatted with her about the challenges of training in Manitoba's harsh winters for such a hot, dry race in the desert, her emotions on the start line and her most difficult stage when she ran out of water.
Wiebe says some of her biggest challenges were keeping her feet in good shape (her years of nursing came in handy), staying hydrated, and being active with little rest.

Jazmine Lowther of Nelson, BC fresh off of her Golden Ticket win at The Canyons 100, chats with us about her short yet epic journey as an ultra runner.
With a history deep in endurance sports including alpine climbing, skiing and soccer, Jazmine is relatively new on the scene but has already carved out an impressive place at races such as Run Rabbit Run and Chuckanut 50k.
To her utter disbelief, she led the women at Canyons off the start and never let it go. She went into the race believing that the Golden Ticket for Western States was for a 2023 entry and learned afterwards that she would be again toeing the line in California in just over 2 months!
Before that, Jazmine is taking on an Everest Challenge - achieving vert in excess of 9,000 metres, in the hopes of raising $1000 or more for one of her favourite causes, protecting the ecosystems where she lives and trains. Welcome to GRR Podcast Season 2
We start off Season 2 with our Canadian Trail to Western States Series with Leo Fung.
Leo Fung started his Western States 100 journey without even knowing it.
He entered The Canadian Death race back in 2014 when his company signed him up to just do a leg. Then when his co-workers backed out he decided to take on The Death Race solo, earning him his first ticket to WS100.
From there he took on other big ticket races like UTMB, Fat Dog, Javelina just to name a few.
After 7 years of tickets, plus the pandemic lockdown, his name was finally pulled from the lottery in 2021.

Mandy Wallace competed in the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB).
UTMB is regarded as one of the most difficult foot races in the world. It is often considered the Olympics of the Ultra world community.
Mandy had her sights on this race since she was a kid, and thought she would never be able to compete in it after suffering severe knee injuries in university.
With her determination and driving force, she started to train in 2018, with marathons in New Zealand, the Chase The Coyote 50k in Ontario, (which she won), Bromont Ultra 160k in Quebec and Oman Ultra in the middle east.
Even while she suffered through stomach issues, knee pain, and of course was sleep deprived she still managed to get it done in over 45hrs.

Her 198 trophies on UltraSignup gives you an indication of what type of athlete she is but during our chat we narrowed it down to some specific races that really put her name out there.
We discuss how her knee injuries almost kept her off many a start line, about her early days as an adventure racer and experiences at Eco-Challenge and Primal Quest and her 4 top place finishes at Western States 100. Not to mention her grand slam attempt, and of course The Barkley Marathons, and her latest win at The Last Annual Heart of the South Road Race in 2020; a race that is 326 miles in length.
