This seems true. The opposite of everything is connection. So how do we cultivate the elusive, impermanent experience of connection with our friends, our lovers, and our loved ones? Well here are some ideas. Connection is a flow state of experience. There are (at least) 3 barriers to connection, and there are many different levels of spice.

Hey there, this is the part two on mantras. Trauma is a complex experience but my metaphysical understanding of samskaras guides my thinking alot. In today's episode, I share a little about samskaras and I teach two more trauma specific mantras to interrupt the cognitive or emotional storms of our living and our hurting. Enjoy.
As always, thanks for listening and be sure to connect with me. Hop over to my website and subscribe!

Thoughts are brutally oppressive. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just stop thinking, whenever thinking was painful? Well, some people say we can. Not only can meditation successfully interrupt thought storms, but mantras can play a significant role. Mantras are easy to say words or phrases that intentionally disrupt unhealthy patterns of thinking.
Join me in this episode for part 1 of 2 on the use of mantras to interrupt your thought storms.
And thanks for continuing to listen. As you know, I am not consistent, but I am real. When I am able to share, I will and I so enjoy the process. Thank you for hanging with me.

What if we rejected the culture of extreme excess and devoted ourselves to craving the moderation of one project at a time?
This is a story all about how, my cat named Chilly awakened my teenage son. Enjoy this episode on the podcast or check it out on my substack link.
This episode is about busy lives and how to live them. And about setting intentions for living inside of busy, as well as possible. I hope it helps you too.
Do you know something? Most things we struggle with, we suffer with, we ache with, are lifespan projects. They require the lifespan to fully integrate. That doesn't mean they aren't healing. It simply means we are bearing them for the long haul. And that's really okay.
Don't you?
The question isn't, why are we sometimes so sad and anxious and mad and scared and worried and livid and angry and numb, the question is, why should we not be?

These are my observations about human beings. We are often either experiencing life fires raging through our souls...or we are bored and complacent sitting in the green grass of abundance. Either way, we must surf this tension and make meaningful what already is.
Hi there, remember me? I thought it was time to update the podcast and let you all know where I've been and why I've been absent. First of all, let me thank you for downloading this podcast now 11'239 times! I don't think either Stephanie or I thought it was going to have such an impact and I am really glad that you have found it to be helpful!
In this episode, I am giving you a behind the scenes look at how I DIY therapy on myself. I have properly analyzed and thoroughly examined my absence, so I am giving you all of those details here.
Among other things, I talk about the Four Expectations. Take a look at the research by Gretchen Rubin on the topic to learn more.
I believe that truth should equal trust, not consistency. I won't be able to be consistent. But I will try to always tell you the truth and give things to you straight.
If you want to follow along with me as I write and share my thoughts/ideas/work, the best way to stay in touch with me is to 1. stay subscribed to the podcast, I will be back, albeit it, inconsistently! and 2. subscribe to my journal. Let's keep our relationship going!

I've got some tough news for you...self-doubt is here to stay. All people have insecurities! Let's show up anyway and bring your self-doubt with you!
In this episode, I cover my own self-doubt, how I work through it, and why I push through with my self-doubt alongside me. I discuss where self-doubt comes from and how cultural norms influence it.
Sorry for the lack of music in this one, it's just this one episode, I promise, the sweet tunes of Ian Ferguson will be back next episode. Error in production. Imperfections...I'm flowing with it, gotta show up anyway!
How many times have you wondered about a trait that you have, or a way that you have reacted to life and thought...is this just me, and how I am, or is this my trauma and how it has affected me?
In this episode, I am answering this question: What is you and just how you are, and what is your trauma and how it has shaped you?
I talk about the flowing self of you, erupting and evaporating through time, self-ing.
I talk about trauma and PTSD and the way that it can be described as it pertains to the three E's (event, experience, effects).
I talk about trauma as a thread pulsing through our experience.
And I share my own personal thread and how it showed up for me recently at a dinner party.
I hope you enjoy this episode!

Do you experience chronic feelings of emptiness? Or do you ever get caught inside a storm of self-doubt? In this episode Amy takes the mic and reads an essay she recently wrote about some cows and coyotes outside of Victor, Colorado. From there, she explores the spiritual practice of “living inside out.”
“You must meet your inner world with your outer experience or existence will crush you.” Mark Nepo
Amy explores how our life experiences push us to step back again and again, covering ourselves from the outer world. We often become stuck hiding our selves from others. What does this cost us? And, what are those moments where life comes in, forcing you to become life embodied, inside out?
What if each of us owns the truth; this is who I am, this is what I fear, and this is what I need. Wouldn’t that be a good world?
And what about Joy? Where is that experience? And where is it hiding? All of this in more in this week’s episode of Spiritual Therapy with Amy.

In this episode, Stephanie shares thoughts on one of her favorite topics, how behavior change really works. It can be endlessly frustrating to regularly set goals, and then find ourselves returning to old behaviors again and again. Once you understand how the brain works, it starts to become much easier to see change taking hold in your life.
It's not impossible to finally stick to a plan and achieve our goals, it's that the strategies we rely on often set us up for failure or disappointment. With the right tools and information, the path to long term behavior change can be a fun, doable, and sustainable process.
For the outline or notes on this topic please reach out to Stephanie by visiting her website at www.foodandbodytherapy.com or sending an email to stephanie@foodandbodytherapy.com.

In this episode we discuss the somewhat mysterious world of our core belief systems. We look at what core beliefs are, where they come from, how they can create distress in our lives, and how we can begin working to unravel them. Learning how to observe and gently challenge our core beliefs might be the most important work we can do in our process of awakening and truly knowing the self.
In last weeks episode we left off feeling like we had even more to say about pain! We've decided it's one of our favorite things to both talk about and work on with our clients. So consider this episode a "part two" to the pain conversation.
In this weeks episode we also took the conversation further by providing concrete DIY tools that will allow you to begin tackling the subtle art of greeting and processing your pain.
Lastly, keep an eye out for this weeks newsletter where we'll highlight our DIY therapy tool and our mantra of the week.
We'll see in you in next weeks episode where we'll be exploring the power of core beliefs.
In Good Health,
Amy & Steph
Life is difficult. There is pain. There is pleasure. While most of us are willing to thoroughly engage pleasure, pain is another story. Many of us spend a lifetime resisting the pain of living. What if we allowed ourselves to be with our pain? How would it change our lives?
The truth about pain includes:
It is here anyway.
It belongs.
It teaches.
It humbles.
It opens.
It catalyzes joy.
Please enjoy!

In this episode we discuss the sometimes mysterious concept of "processing" in therapy. What exactly is processing? What are we aiming to achieve by processing our emotions and our experiences? And perhaps more importantly, what are some simple ways we can process more productively as we navigate life's turbulent ups and downs? We answer these and other questions in this casual and conversational episode. Please enjoy the conversation and visit us anytime at www.diytherapypodcast.com.
In this episode we're keeping things casual. This was actually recorded awhile back, during a time when we were both struggling to find our flow as new podcasters. We decided to just hit record and see what transpired... The result was this ebbing and flowing conversation around personal challenges, our cultural attachments to productivity, the importance of including soulful work in our medical models, and so much more.
Thanks for tuning in and supporting the podcast. If you enjoy this episode or have questions or suggestions for us, we would love to hear from you! Please reach out any time at www.diytherapypodcast.com.
We'll see in you in the next episode!
Anthony Davis is a Craniosacral Therapist (CST). Anthony and I (Amy) have a deep chat about how we met, what craniosacral therapy is, and how effective it has been for myself and my son. We also talked at length about energy and the way that it moves through the body (or doesn't), how the body stores emotional pain, what books we have read that turn our spiritual gears, and so much more. This is a spiritual chat between two energy workers . I hope you enjoy!

In this episode we discuss the transformative healing power of perspective. Perspective can profoundly change the intensity of our suffering since it instantaneously grounds us in the reality of life's inherent ups and downs. Perspective is always available to us, and offers us the comforting reminder that everything is always changing and that even when we're not ok... we're always going to be ok.

In this episode Stephanie shares her top tool for addressing compulsive eating. Compulsive eating is an umbrella term that might include overeating, mindless eating, emotional eating, stress eating, and/or binge eating. Luckily the tools and techniques used to address one will positively impact all the rest.

In this episode I (Stephanie!) interviewed long time friend, colleague, and mentor Jackie Melin on navigating grief and loss. Jackie is a tremendously skilled therapist who currently specializes in grief work in her private practice. Jackie and I discuss what grief actually is, how we can begin to navigate our losses with more skill and presence, and how we can best show up for friends or loved ones when they are grieving.
I LOVED this talk with Jackie so I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. I included her shared resources below, and as always please reach out with thoughts or questions about this episode at www.diytherapypodcast.com.

In this episode, Amy hosts by herself and tells the story of self-love. Some of us have ideal mothers and fathers. When we are securely attached, we receive mostly what we need and we receive it consistently. But sometimes, something is just "not right" with mother/father and we do not receive what we need. Why is this? And how can you recover if you did not receive what you needed when you were so young? This episode dives into those questions and walks you through the real work of loving yourself to health.

In this episode we discuss setting the stage for working with trauma. We explore the early stages of trauma work including the importance of feeling safe with your therapist, simple ways of introducing yourself to your body and the emotions that live there, and some helpful somatic tools that can be used for instant nervous system relief. If you're interested in learning more about our guest, Jen Barnes, you can find her at www.pathwaystowellnessllc.com.
Lastly... we experienced a few recording hiccups in this episode so we apologize for losing a small chunk of Jen's discussion on polyvagal theory in the middle of the episode. We also lost the last minute of our recording so you may feel like we cut out early! Despite these glitches, we know the value of this episode greatly outweighs our recording errors :) We hope you enjoy the conversation.

We all flow in and out of depressive episodes throughout the lifespan. But instead of working to fight our mood fluctuations, it can be much more helpful to practice flowing with them. In this episode we discuss an evolved perspective on depression and explore ways in which we can all stay more present with its ebb and flow. We offer tools for changing your relationship with depression and discuss why its so important to give yourself permission to do the bare minimum when you're feeling blue. In summary... we believe feeling depressed is just fine and may even be a launching pad for our ongoing growth and evolution as human beings. We would love to hear your feedback on this episode so please head over to www.diytherapypodcast.com and tell us what you think.
In this episode we veered away from our norm and decided to discuss some of our favorite helpful tips for new therapists. Although this episode was geared more toward other professionals, we believe the conversation will prove helpful for any of our listeners. We would love to hear what you think, so please share your thoughts with us at www.diytherapypodcast.com. Talk soon!
This episode is all things random! We discuss feelings of guilt around taking vacation, the dynamics of accepting fees for helping people heal their souls, and we discuss social media usage, specifically, our lack thereof, and we wonder how that will impact the scaling of our podcast. Basically, it's the random deep thoughts episode!
This topic was so fun to explore. We talked about how important it is to re-raise ourselves. And what does that really entail? We call it doing "the work" and we describe it in simple details. We talked about the choices we make, conscious or unconscious. We also take this conversation pretty deep (per usual) and we talk about how the universe and you have the same goal--expansion! We go on a lengthy dharma conversation about pain and suffering as it relates to being parented. And we offer something that you need to hear: It happened to you, but it wasn't about you.
This episode is about cultivating the only thing that permanently exists: the present moment. The act of becoming present may not solve our problems or eliminate pain, but presence relieves suffering from pain and opens us up to access the collective solutions to problems. In presence, we are a portal.
What should you eat? How should you eat? What does it mean about you that you eat what you eat? Are you addicted to sugar? This episode will help you answer these questions and more. We cover topics like food and morality, food cravings, food addiction, how to feed your kids, and so much more!
In this last and final episode in our anxiety series we're discussing our fourth anxiety master tool, habits of daily living. Self-care is a hot topic and our goal for this episode was not only to introduce fresh ways of approaching healthy habits, but offer you some tips and tricks for implementing them in ways you may not have tried before. Please let us know your thoughts on this episode by sending us a message at www.modernmindbodytherapy.com/podcast. See you next time!
In this episode we're exploring our third anxiety master tool, known as "worrying well." This game changing tool for anxiety teaches you how to organize your thoughts, ask targeted questions that will decrease the intensity of your worry, and then implement right action in order to move toward resolution, acceptance and inner peace. We know this tool will prove helpful so we hope you enjoy the episode! If you have any questions or comments please visit us at www.modernmindbodytherapy.com/podcast.
In this episode we are sharing our second master tool for managing your anxiety. We discuss how to let go of evaluating or judging anxiety in favor of describing the not-so-threatening physical sensations that accompany anxiety. When we get out of our heads and into our bodies we can use sensation and body posture to gently coax our nervous system back into a state of relaxation and calm. Be sure to check back soon for Anxiety Master Tool #3.
In this episode we review what is perhaps the most highly used therapy tool of all time... grounding! Most people who have been to therapy are familiar with the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding tool for managing acute anxiety. And there's a reason it's talked about so often... because it works! We hope you'll give grounding a try and check back weekly as we'll be exploring our next three anxiety master tools in upcoming episodes.
In this episode we're discussing one of the most talked about issues impacting our mental health... ANXIETY! Join us as we explore what anxiety actually is, where it comes from, and how we can begin working with it within ourselves. In episodes to follow, we'll be providing our most helpful DIY tools for managing anxiety and finding relief.
The global COVID pandemic has been a trauma for all of us. In this episode we explore some of the mental health impacts of the pandemic, and how we can best care for our health moving forward. We discuss ways to begin the slow transition back into "normal" life, and how physical touch and reconnection will be of critical importance.
You asked, we answered! We took your questions about what it's like to be a therapist and made an episode about it. Does your therapist get angry at you? Does your therapist judge you? Does your therapist have favorites? Well, we can't speak for all therapists but we answered these questions from our point of view. Enjoy!
We all have them...but what do we DO about them? This is the episode where we give you the spiritual and scientific details about your EMOTIONS...how to feel them and how to surrender to the emotional current of your life! Enjoy!
Hey... you know something? You are more than your enneagram number. You are a flowing soul, self-ing through this life. Labels and diagnoses can be helpful, but they have limits. Join us as we break down the concept of flowing through the middle path of your identity. Sometimes the answer is, "that's just how you are."
In this episode we're exploring the many dimensions of the self. We discuss new ways of understanding yourself, why you do what you do, and why it can be so hard to change unwanted behaviors or habits. Sometimes a new perspective and some helpful DIY tools are all it takes to start making measurable progress toward growth and change.
Valentine's Day is coming up so we thought we'd share our conversation on relationships and the common patterns of disconnection, how we can move back towards connection, and much more!
In this episode, we are discussing the political pain that so many of us are experiencing. We delve into the spiritual aspects of anger and love and discuss mindfulness solutions for navigating our political pain.
You've been conditioned to believe that you are not enough. And that you must do work on yourself in order to be something better, to look a certain way, to weigh a certain amount. Well, we have a problem with that! in this episode, we talk about body image from both a practical and soulful lens. Enjoy!
Imposter Syndrome. Do you ever feel like you can't pursue your goals because you're just not quite ready? Maybe you feel like there's always more to plan, more to learn, or it's just never the right time. We're feeling it too! In this episode, we explore what it feels like to struggle with imposter syndrome. We also offer you lots of tools to effectively work with this fear within yourself. Enjoy!
Now that we have pontificated on thoughts, we are moving into the DIY section of the show. This is the one where we give you the tools to relating to your thoughts.
We have lots of thoughts about thoughts. We recorded them for you! There's a little bit of science, a little bit of soul and a lot of examples of how thoughts effect us and what we can do about it.
The River of Life is intense. We break down a common mindfulness metaphor that resonates with us and guides how we see ourselves, others, stuck-ness, energy, and patterns. This idea forms a lot of our interventions so we think it's a great place to start. We also share a little about each of our backgrounds and specialties.
Welcome to the DIY Therapy Podcast! We are so excited to introduce the podcast to you. Our goals are to show up as we are, hit record and then share it with you. We hope you enjoy our first episode where we explore what we aim to do with our podcast. Special thanks to our musical creator, Ian Ferguson, who graciously gifted us a jingle for our little pod.
