In this podcast episode, we dive into one of the most controversial topics in the diabetes community - carbs. If you've been following along, you know I'm all about those carbs. This episode is for those of you who, like me, want to discuss how to reintroduce carbs into your diet. We'll tackle the mental and emotional challenges that can arise when you're told to avoid something that was once a big part of your life. If you are eager to reintroduce carbs back into your life with diabetes, this conversation is for you. Let's break down the barriers and explore how carbs can fit into your diabetes journey.

Regular checkups are an important part of caring for your diabetes for several reasons. The biggest reason is that things change over time, and your healthcare provider can help you adjust when they do. If you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, you’re at an increased risk of other serious health conditions, including heart and kidney disease and other autoimmune conditions so it is important to stay up-to-date with your health screenings.

When we're initially diagnosed with T1D, we're lead to believe that essentially the only three numbers that matter are the number of carbs we're eating in our meal, the number of units to take of insulin, and the number on our meter.
But when we take a holistic approach, we can see that there's so much more to the journey. We always hear, "there are 42 things that impact blood sugar" - well not for nothing, but why aren't we considering them in our every day decisions?
While I'm not here to tell you that you should be considering every single one in every single daily dosing decision, there are a few things that should be top of mind and we're breaking it all down in this weeks episode!

What's the most important area to master in your diabetes management before all else? You guessed it, your baselines. If you're feeling stuck or a bit burnt out in your diabetes management, this episode is for you. At some point or another, all of us go through ruts in our management, and it's important to normalize it! Instead of trying to to tackle everything at once, I've found it most sustainable to build strong foundations that support us in the ever occurring micro-moments that create big impact in our diabetes management.
Today we're talking about neurolinguistic programming and how you can use the practice of anchoring to build positive pairings that will completely change the relationship and mindset you hold around the blood sugar numbers. The more we implement practices like this, the less we associate our self worth with our blood sugars and the more we see them as an independent part of our lives.

What happens when you think of the number 62? Did your mind just jump to 62 carbs?
It's no secret that living with diabetes can distort our relationship with food. Whether it's looking at the amount of carbs constantly, the blood sugar trend or just associating your food with a number - it can be pretty damaging. So the balance becomes, how can we enjoy the things we love while balancing the blood sugar strategy?
Meet Ben Tzeel, Registered Dietitian and Strength Coach. Inside today's episode, he walks us through how to start getting bold with food, one step at a time.

We know that there are two disparities in the diabetes community.
Disparity #1: There is a lack of representation and empathy for the type two community.
Disparity #2: People of color do not receive the same level of care in either communities.
So how does social media perpetuate these disparities? How can we become more inclusive and bridge the gap?
Inside this weeks episode, I sit down with Taylor Danielle, Podcaster and Founder of Healing in Hindsight a network to help millennials with diabetes thrive. We discuss Taylor's experience as a Type 2 woman of color navigating the diabetes community and advocating for equal care and representation.

Weight loss isn't a bad goal to have while living with diabetes. Unsustainable weight loss is.
There is a massive difference between weight loss lead by restriction, and weight loss lead by fueling your body and enjoying the process.
Inside today's episode, I sit down with my co-coach and friend, Jessica Hrdlicka. Jessica is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator who helps people living with diabetes lose weight and manage blood sugars all while eating the foods that they love.
Inside our conversation, we talk all about an empowered approach to your weight goals and taking the journey without restriction.

⏰ (1:04): Introducing our guest, my-co-coach: Jessica Hrdlicka
⏰ (2:01): I'm sure that everybody kind of knows you from my Instagram page, um and just kind of being aware of Keeping it 100 But do you mind taking some time to introduce yourself and just kind of sharing a little bit more about yeah, you and what you do?
⏰ (3:31): Can we take a quick second, just to explain kind of what you do for, first our clients inside of Keeping It 100, but then also what you do for your own clients inside of your own business?
⏰ (5:54): Can you share maybe the things that your clients typically walk in believing and kind of what shift you help them create?
⏰ (8:50): What is the first thing that you kind of uncover with these clients who come in with those preconceived kind of notions like you mentioned?
⏰ (13:14): Can we talk about the science behind it, on both ends of like weight loss and insulin resistance, why isn't cutting carbs or cutting calories the immediate solution there?
⏰ (17:02): When we're talking about just that initial mindset portion of working on the relationship with food and relationship with the number, before anybody even wants to get into their weight loss journey. What are kind of some tips or advice that you can give them when they're working with that upfront?
⏰ (19:22): When it comes to kind of that weight loss perspective, how do you take that 'adding in' approach into that goal? Like, how do you support your clients in that?
⏰ (22:05): Can you talk about that a little bit, of why having less calories doesn't always equate to weight loss?
⏰ (23:55): I wish more people took your approach of like, no, like, we need a set amount of calories a day, we need to fuel our bodies. And that's how it works.
⏰ (25:26): If someone came to you in a plateau, what would be the first few questions that you would ask them to consider?
⏰ (30:32): How would you say that like your approach to blood sugar management, insulin resistance, weight loss, etc. meets that sustainability piece? Like, what do you do differently that makes it sustainable for everybody so that they're not stuck in that yo-yo diet?
⏰ (32:33): When would you say ‘you’ve done a lot, it’s time to kind of set that goal aside and focus on other things’?
⏰ (35:37): What would you say is the importance of having like a mentor, or a coach, or someone like you, right next to them guiding them along the way?
⏰ (37:18): Inside of your own personal coaching, do you do private coaching, group coaching? What can people know about how you support your clients?

⏰ (1:03): This week’s guest
⏰ (2:43): Do you mind introducing yourself?
⏰ (4:26): What got you on to that approach of integrating more whole foods into your own lifestyle?
⏰ (6:48): Do you mind speaking more on your diagnosis and how it was to go from growing up with this; living with T1D for 20+ years, to now having your own child and going through that experience of having your health now impacting somebody else as well?
⏰ (10:12): Were these questions that you went to your doctors with?
⏰ (12:43): Were there other people that you brought into your journey at that point?
⏰ (14:40): So for somebody listening who might not know the difference between their regular health care provider, endocrinologist and somebody who works in the holistic realm, how did they approach those appointments differently?
⏰ (18:42): Can you speak more to the difference that you felt in your journey from living that standard American diet to focusing on micronutrients and the holistic perspective?
⏰ (23:22): Were there any fears going into pregnancy or misconceptions that you didn't know more about? Like those common myths that we're taught about diabetes and pregnancy?
⏰ (28:35): So for your clients that come to you, do you notice that a lot of these maybe first time moms generally have a lot of fear? Or like what are the common roadblocks that stop people from wanting to or make them scared of pregnancy or having a family?
⏰ (33:32): If you were talking to someone who may be looking to get pregnant in the next 3-5 years, and they’re looking at all the kind of misconceptions that are given online or the recommendations or fears that people hav, what would you tell them being on the other side of it? What would you want them to hear instead?
⏰ (39:15): How would you describe that experience to anybody who’s kind of trying to prepare or get more real insight into the journey of pregnancy; from preparation (lowering A1C, etc) to the hills and valleys of insulin resistance and insulin sensitivity during pregnancy?
⏰ (44:24): So looking a little bit into the pregnancy journey, again, you know, SparkNotes version, how can you prepare somebody for the nine months? I know that there's different sensitivity and resistance levels, just kind of how somebody might prepare and looking to maybe understand the trends that might be coming their way?
⏰ (51:31): Let's talk about how you support type one woman in the pregnancy journey and how people can find more about you and what you do, because obviously, there's just so much more than can fit into an hour long podcast episode.

Diabetes is like learning a language you never wanted to learn. Not only are there new "rules", a new way of taking care of yourself and a new way of making decisions, but there are A LOT of new terms to learn. Heck, when I was diagnosed I didn't even know what a carb was, none the less a "bolus".
Inside this weeks episode I'm breaking down nine diabetes-specific definitions I wish I learned sooner. Learning these not only would have made my endocrinologists appointments a lot less overwhelming, but it would have allowed me to have more powerful interactions with other members in the diabetes community.
Here's what's inside the episode:
Nine definitions it took three years to learn in my own management
Four things I WISH my endocrinologist told me from the very beginning
How to use these for your own journey and make them your own

Trigger warning: Suicide-attempt mentioned inside of this episode.
A diagnosis of type one diabetes comes with a large mental load, especially with an adult onset.
Inside this episode, I sit down with Jiggy Yoon who has been a personal friend of mine for years (and years to come). Jiggy is the only Korean, lesbian, hip-hop dancing and rapping Type 1 Diabetic girl-who-lifts with tattoos, piercings who speaks so boldly of vulnerability.
We sit down and talk about the events leading up to her diagnosis that made handling type one diabetes even more difficult, how she chose to move forward and how she is rising above it all now.

After my diagnosis with T1D, it took me a while to be open about it. Not only to friends, family and old high school peers - but to social media. Even 2-3 years after my diagnosis, you couldn't pay me a million dollars to post about being type one diabetic. That's what makes Liv different. Being diagnosed a little over six months ago, she quickly brought her journey to Tiktok. Not expecting it to be found, she accidentally gained 45,000 followers on her account.
Inside this episode, we talk all about the realities of being diagnosed at 27 years old, how her diagnosis away from home shifted her relationships, and most of all how she takes comfort in sharing her journey with others on TikTok.

With knowledge is power, with knowledge is more options and with knowledge is flexibility. I believe that with type one diabetes, we shouldn't have to, we shouldn't have to tie ourselves down to a structure with exercise or lifestyle simply because it works for our blood sugar. We should have the options in front of us to make it work for us and our bodies, our goals and our preferences.
Inside this episode, I'm diving deep into blood sugar and exercise far beyond the oversimplification of "bring a juice box" so you can finally have interruption-free workouts. I'm going to give you the three biggest things I learned in my personal training certification that I've applied to my diabetes and exercise journey.

Of all of the endocrinologists that you've met with, how many of them have actually had type one diabetes like you? Throughout my 8 years of living with T1D, I can't name a single physician that has truly been able to identify with my diagnosis. Well, that's where people like Paige come in. Meet Paige Proctor, a Certified Endocrinology PA and Health/Fitness Coach who has type 1 diabetes herself. She helps her patients and clients understand the root causes of their blood sugar trends so that they can live their lives without diabetes holding them back.
In today's conversation, Paige and I talk about what it's like playing the role of a patient and provider - the good, the bad and the ugly. We also discuss the flaws in traditional western medicine and why she's decided to take a functional approach to diabetes care and how she is training her patients to do the same.

⏰ (3:27): Kudos to your dad for catching that. What made him even, if it doesn't run in your family, what made him think of that?
⏰ (8:02): So is that how you kind of got into the health care field because of your dad, I'm assuming?
⏰ (10:53): Did you originally think you never would’ve wanted to work with diabetics because of how your relationship with diabetes was? Or like the management aspect? Like where, what, what makes you say that?
⏰ (11:55): I mean, how many growing up, how many of your endocrinologist were actually diabetic

⏰ (23:06): How do you feel that having a more holistic lens, and more all encompassing focus, has helped you in both your personal management and you know, you seeing patients?
⏰ (35:20): What led you to want to learn more about that approach? And like, what do you hope to do with more of that education?
⏰ (48:01): So if somebody let's say, anybody listening, or your patients or whoever, whoever you're talking to, if they want to, like investigate more of that functional or holistic approach, like, where do you send them to start learning about that stuff? Like, what resources do you give them? What do you encourage them to educate themselves on?

2021.. was... an interesting one to say the least. I think we can all agree on that. Inside today's episode, I share the four biggest lessons I learned this year - and how you can learn from them too.

⏰ (17:29): Lesson number three - Transparency and accessibility in the diabetes space is no longer an option.
⏰ (22:23): Lesson number four - being alone is hard. But it is so important.
⏰ (26:16): Lesson Recap.
⏰ (26:40): Good things that happened in 2021.

With gut health being a new hot trend, it can be hard to find real information between the super food blends, detox teas and everything in between. But when it comes down to it, there can be a holistic approach that doesn't involve breaking the bank on new products.
In today's episode, I sit down with Mia Giommi - Certified Nutritional Practitioner CNP NNCP (IHN) and Functional Diagnostics Nutrition Practitioner FDNP-T (2022 candidate) to discuss the lifestyle factors like stress, inflammation, sleep and blood sugar fluctuation and their effect on our internal health. Whether you are T1D or not, this is a conversation needed for all.

⏰ (1:05): On this week’s episode…
⏰ (1:26): Mia, can you introduce yourself?
⏰ (2:25): Let’s hear the fun stuff: what do you do? What do you enjoy?
⏰ (4:05): What brought you from architecture into the holistic healthcare space?
⏰ (7:01): Similar stories
⏰ (10:45): I don’t know about you, but I had that kind of experience where everything was very oversimplified. What made you think that there was more out there that could support you on that level?
⏰ (13:02): What were those first kinda steps that you took? Like, did you have to do a lot of trial and error? Where did you find reputable resources? Where did you start?
⏰ (15:53): can you speak on the kind of the importance of stress management and how that can play internally? And what we might see from it?
⏰ (19:41): So when you’re looking at the stress response, where do you think is the most important place to start? Lifestyle, nutrition, movement?
⏰ (25:18): Can we speak on those other three areas that you had mentioned? So you mentioned inflammation, sleep and blood sugar management?
⏰ (27:13): So what do you what would you say would be like the first step navigating inflammation itself?
⏰ (31:13): Quickly touch on the other couple things…blood sugar management and sleep
⏰ (33:58): Funny that you talk about those four things, because we just released a free resource with our team that has our clients track those things for optimizing their blood sugars, and this just brings it full circle (check it out here: https://needlesandspoons.kartra.com/page/tracker )
⏰ (35:39): The holistic side really can get a bad rep at first. But the doctors and the medicine and the holistic side can all work hand-in-hand.

It's almost the new year, which means we're in that part of December where it's time to reflect on what we've accomplished over the last 365 days and what goals we want to set walking into the next 365. It can be easy to fall into the A1C and time in range goals. While they're not bad goals to have, they're not sustainable ones for the longevity of your management.
So inside of today's episode, I'm walking you through the #1 mistake I see in goal setting for chasing after big goals. It's not a matter of if you'll achieve them, it's how - and today I'm walking you through the first step to make sure you're getting started on the right foot.

Two years ago I randomly applied for a Social Media Manager position for an online patch company I had recently tried out with the intention of being more involved in the diabetes community. What I didn't expect was that I would witness this company disrupt the diabetes space in such an impactful and influential space. Skin Grip has easily become a leader in the diabetes space, not only in their top-notch product - but in how they lead with integrity, prioritize accessibility and give back to the community.
Meet Isaac, Founder and CEO of Skin Grip. In today's discussion, we talk all about how the company started, where they plan to go, and how Isaac leads differently than any company I've seen. Oh, and make sure to stay tuned at the end because we announce a huge way that Skin Grip is giving back and how you can be apart of it.

We've all had the conversations in our endocrinologists office - retinopathy, neuropathy, glaucoma, nephropathy - there's quite a list of potential risks that come with a diagnosis of type one diabetes. The one thing in common? They're scary to think about, they're frequently used as a scare tactic from our physicians, and having them doesn't make you a bad diabetic.
Inside this episode, I'm chatting with a former Keeping it 100 client on her 11 years living with diabetes and how the fear of complications actually held her back from caring for her blood sugars. We get real on the emotional impact this fear creates, the stress it cultivates and how it plays a role in how we prioritize our diabetes management.
Here's what we discuss inside today's episode:
Kayleigh's diagnosis at 15 years old and how the initial advice she received impacted how she managed her blood sugars for 10 years.
How she came to the decision that seeking support was best for her.
How the fear of complications stopped her from taking care of her blood sugars.
How social media made it's impact on her mindset around diabetes complications.
The mindset shift that helped her go from thinking "complications are inevitable" to "my journey can be different".

We see it all the time. New diets and trends - low carb, plant based, high carb - low fat, #75Hard workout programs, you name it. All of which were not designed to support the woman's body. The linear, checklist approach to diabetes management is actually more damaging for women who want to gain predictability in their blood sugars and work with their body.
Inside this episode, I sit down with my co-coaches Jessica Hrdlicka (RD/CDE) and Valeria Garcia (Women's Wellness Coach) and discuss why our diabetes management doesn't actually thrive off of routine and how our approach has created a groundbreaking space for our clients.

Health class taught us the basics: This is your period.. Use birth control.. Don't get pregnant. Welcome back to Keeping it 100 Radio! Wow, 2021. What a year. We have seen so much growth in the resources we have available to the diabetes community. One advancement I'm most impressed with? The automode feature on pumps like the T-Slim and Medtronic (and hey, even the Omnipod but that isn't FDA approved yet). While I'm not on the automode myself, I've had many clients who are. But to their disappointment, it's an advancement that's overhyped in the health care system. Not because it doesn't work, but because they haven't taken the proper steps to set their foundations in place first.
Inside this episode, we're going to talk about the number one flaw I see in the automode feature, how you can make the technology work for you and how you can work with it all to finally bring predictability to your blood sugars and end the frustration around dosing decisions.

⏰ (13:14): Decision making process
⏰ (17:02) What emotions are driving our decisions?

This episode comes with a trigger warning, but it's an important conversation for us to have. When I was first diagnosed with type one, I was lucky enough to be 19 when I already had a pre-established relationship with food (not to say that diabetes didn't distort that relationship). Unfortunately, that's not always the case. Diabulimia is a very real and dangerous eating disorder that is not fully recognized or discussed by our endocrinologists.
Inside this episode, we're talking with guest Natalie Swanson about her experience with diabulimia, the impact it's had on her life and how to get support if you relate to the signs.

⏰ (0:00): Intro
⏰ (0:28): Brought to you by Skin Grip
⏰ (1:08): Intro Natalie
⏰ (1:59): Do you mind sharing a bit about yourself and just introducing yourself?
⏰ (1:09): Why isn’t diabulimia talked about?
⏰ (6:36): How did you recognize that there was this disordered relationship around around food?
⏰ (10:23): Type 1 vs Type 2 stigma
⏰ (15:07): There's this idea of going around the diabetes community that once you start insulin, or if you take a certain amount of insulin, you gain weight. I’d love to hear your insight on that.
⏰ (20:44): Do you mind sharing some like signs or thought processes or behaviors that may help us to recognize if we might fall into that category? Or if our loved ones may be falling into that category?
⏰ (24:35): So let's just say we're a type three. So we're somebody who is a loved one of a diabetic or you know, friend, family member partner, whatever it is, how can we differentiate the difference between preference and disordered eating? Like, where is the line? How can people understand? What are the appropriate questions to ask?
⏰ (27:59): If somebody recognizes that their patient or their loved one is having these emotions around food or are approaching food in this way, or they’re noticing the signs in their management - how can they support their loved one or their patient? Like what are some things that they can do to help them recover?
⏰ (32:01): At what point did you realize that you needed support? Like who did you turn to? What did you do to kind of start that process?
⏰ (38:36): Is there a time where fitness and exercise is damaging? Or is that always healthy?
⏰ (41:41): Do you have any tips that you can share for tackling food guilt, especially with type one diabetes, where we do have to look at food a different way, and there's blood sugars involved? And what can you share if anybody needs some, some tips?
⏰ (46:31): What do you do to provide support?
⏰ (48:35): Do you have a website? What is your Instagram? Where can people find you?
⏰ (49:42): Wrap-up
