Judges: Returning to God
Episode 13: Everyone Did As They Saw Fit (Judges 19-21)
In this concluding episode the moral and spiritual decay of Israel leads to the abuse of women, civil war, and a threat to the survival to an entire tribe of the Israelites. Chaos is the result when everyone does what they think is right in their own eyes!

We’ve all heard the old adage: “Train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old, they will not depart from it.” It’s wisdom straight from the book of Proverbs. However, as we saw in our recent study through Proverbs, sayings such as this one are not hard and fast rules. They may be generally true but don’t promise a guaranteed outcome. And who’s to say that we’re even training up our children the right way?
Parenting is not for the faint of heart. This class will focus on some of the specific challenges of trying to raise up godly, resilient children who don’t fall apart when life gets hard. There won’t be any easy answers offered, but you’ll be blessed to hear the collected wisdom of fellow parents and some practical ways to help your kids develop emotional strength, character, and responsibility. Whether you’re just starting out on the parenting journey or your kids are almost grown, we’d love to have you join us for the conversation.

Judges: Returning to God
Episode 12: Take a Little of This and Mix It With a Little of That (Judges 17-18)
The mantra of Judges, “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes,” is nowhere more evident than in the character of Micah, who had no problem mixing the worship of Yahweh with the worship of hand made idols in creating his own brand of religion. And the worst part? He had no awareness that what he was doing was wrong! Even today, we could be guilty of creating God in our image, a God who behaves the way we want him to behave.

Judges: Returning to God
Episode 11: Divine Power and Human Weakness (Judges 16)
As the story of Samson comes to a tragic end, one great truth stands out: even when Samson betrays his Nazirite vow and squanders his divine gift, God is faithful to Samson. What a comfort to know that God can use the most flawed among his people in accomplishing his purposes.

Judges: Returning to God
Episode 9: “When the Weak Become Strong” (Judges 13)
Unlike the other judges, we have the story of Samson’s birth. This is a story when God doesn’t raise up a leader who was already grown, but one given by in the womb, years in advance, to rescue His people. Samson was to be set apart for God’s use alone. Yet he will become the most flawed character in Judges and reflects the state of Israel as a whole. But God is still at work in Israel regardless of Samson.

Episode 8: “Jephthah’s Only Begotten” (Judges 11-12:1-7)
The Lord’s call is always interesting. Jephthah, the outcast son of a prostitute, is called to deliver Israel from Ammonite oppression. As Israel continues her free fall into sin and idolatry, her oppression increases. Yet so does the cost of deliverance to the judge. Because of a rash vow, this deliverance costs Jephthah his only daughter as Israel is torn apart even more from within. But God is still at work.

Judges: Returning to God
Episode 7: “When You Get What You Want” (Judges 9)
Israel keeps falling further and further into rebellion and amnesia with God. God raises up Abimelech, not as a judge but as an “anti-judge” who would make himself king. The oppression of Israel doesn’t come from without but from within. This time, God’s judgment on Israel is to give them exactly what they want. In this story, we see the horror of God’s “yes.”

Episode 2: The Downward Spiral
Under the faithful leadership of Joshua, the Israelites entered the land God had promised to give them. Yet it did not take long for them to forget the LORD and the mighty works He had done on their behalf. They turned to idols and began the downward spiral that repeats and worsens throughout the rest of the book. Even so, the LORD remained faithful to His people and to His promises in spite of their sin. His grace is on display, even in Judges.

Judges: Returning to God.
The book of Judges isn’t an easy read, filled with murder, betrayal, scandal, and unfaithfulness. It can leave readers wondering, “Why is this in the Bible?” Yet at its core, Judges reveals a God of mercy, compassion, and unwavering faithfulness, committed to His people despite their forgetfulness and sin. It’s a message we desperately need in the times we’re living in. Please give it a listen.

Galatians: The Gospel = Jesus + Nothing
The good news of Jesus was under attack in Galatia Some were perverting the gospel not by denying Jesus but by diminishing him. Paul tells these early Christians that all they need—and could ever need—is the good news of grace given to them through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. The gospel of grace isn’t just the only way to enter the kingdom; it is the way to live in and live out the implications of the gospel.

Hebrews 11 is one of the most storied and studied chapters in Scripture. While it commends several biblical characters for their faith in God and calls them “a great cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1), a majority are individuals with less than stellar track records. We meet men and women who did some exemplary things by faith, even if their lives, like ours, were inconsistent in other areas. They persevered in their faith through tough times of trials and testing, difficulties, and decision. Their stories still have much to teach us if we will learn.

Join us for this episode to hear more about the work that Brooklyn Howard is doing in the country of Mozambique. Mozambique is Portuguese speaking country and Brooklyn teaches English to the Makua-Metto people; one of the most unreached people groups in South-Eastern Africa. One way to view the parables is to read them and think, “That’s what I need to do to get my act together.” Doing so, we make these stories with meaning about us. The parables aren’t so much about us, but about the amazing grace and wonderful mercy of God who is drawing us to himself. There’s no better story with a deeper meaning than that!

A "rule of life" or "rhythm of life" is simply a set of practices or a structure we create to help us consistently create space in our busy lives to experience God's presence and love. In a perfect world, we would all have the self-control to maintain deep relationship with Jesus all the time, but unfortunately we lose our way fairly often. A rule of life is like a trellis in a vineyard guiding the vine to growth - the guidance assists you in practicing the Way of Jesus and growing in relationship with Him.
Join us for a series of conversations discussing the practicalities of creating and maintaining a rule of life!

“Contrasts” (1 Samuel 2:12-36). Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were “worthless men” (2:12). And Eli was little better: gluttonous and corrupt, he was brave enough to scold his sons for their behavior, but not brave enough to do anything about it. He honored his sons above the Lord, and fattened his own belly without regard for God’s commands. So, God declares he will bring an end to Eli and his family, and that instead he will raise up a faithful priest who will do the job properly. Who will it be? In this episode, Emily, Emily and Daniel take the next step in the conversation of forgiveness: granting forgiveness. Forgiving others begins with an internal pursuit of forgiveness by identifying with the wrongdoer, absorbing the debt, and willing good for the wrongdoer. The crew talks about how we practically pursue this forgiveness instead of exacting payment or revenge on those who wrong us. We believe this is an important practice and leads to peace, love, and more of the kingdom of God on earth. Join us as we discuss all this and more!

Through repentance, worship, and meditation on Scripture, we can daily experience God's forgiveness.

In this new series, Mark Moore & Daniel Reed discuss the idea of work. How do faith and work overlap? If we are committed to Jesus in a way that we believe affects every part of our lives, the Gospel ought to also influence the number one thing we do with our waking hours: work. Whether you're a stay-at-home mom, a primary caretaker for a loved one, work part-time, or full-time, we believe the story of God has a lot to say about your work.
In this episode, Mark & Daniel dive into a theology of work. What does Scripture have to say about work? Work in the Bible: It’s a divine gift; it’s something humans do to imitate the creativity and goodness of the Creator; it’s something humans do with whatever little patch of the garden happens to be in front of us; we work to bring order and beauty so that we benefit and others benefit too. Jeremiah is known as the “weeping prophet.” Against the backdrop of the debris of Jerusalem and the destruction of his own life, he is a priest to the people, and a prophet for God. The carnage he prophesies for the people may destroy him as well. How does he deal with God, the people, and his own disappointments? The stubbornness of the people, and his own experience of feeling deserted by God Himself, did not stop this impressive man. David’s life seemed tailor made for lament. His laments cover a gamut of emotions: sins done to him, enemies intent on his demise, mourning over the deaths of his best friend and worst enemy. Yet, his hardest laments are when he explores the darkest recesses of his own heart and the sin that resides there. Life in the Minor Key for David teaches a song of repentance and contrition. Dennis and Kent explore David’s life and offer some helpful thoughts on how to construct your own lament.

In this episode, Sean, Emily Sanchez, Kent, and Daniel recap VBS and spend some time reminiscing about their own VBS experiences. After some good memories and laughs, the group spends some time discussing how to share the gospel with people. Often we find ourselves wondering how to follow through on the call from Jesus in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). How do we position ourselves to share the good news with people without being abrasive or bothersome? Immediately, the conclusion drawn has to do with relationship, but how does that play out? All of this and more on this week's episode. If you want to learn more about Providence Road, visit our website: https://www.prcoc.org/

In this episode, Sean hosts Emily Sanchez, Kent Massey and Lee Thrasher in a conversation about "why we go to church." With the affect of the pandemic, many people would say they feel lonelier than ever, but at the same time would tell you that they haven't fully reconnected with their church community. Maybe we haven't been all that connected in the first place.
The group explores why actually, physically going to church is a good practice for our spiritual, mental, and emotional health. Why do we participate in this weekly practice of gathering together? What's the intention? What's the point? All that and more in this episode!

In this episode, Sean, Kent, Daniel, and Emily Sanchez talk about heroes of faith. Do we have any faith heroes? If so, who are they and what makes them a hero? As we journey through our summer preaching series about courageous characters in Scripture, we wanted to take a second to think about our own heroes. It is important for followers of Jesus to have people they can look to, either in scripture or in their life, as guides, mentors, heroes. These people can be like signposts which point us in the direction of Jesus. We hope this conversation leads you to consider who your heroes are or who might see you as a hero. Earlier this spring, Providence Road hosted a suicide intervention workshop with mental health professional Michael McFarland. The whole workshop was about 5 hours, so we picked an hour of the workshop to be our podcast episode for this week. In this hour, Michael is describing what you could call the theology of intervention. How do we as Jesus-followers and people who love God and love others navigate a situation where someone is struggling with thoughts of suicide? Why is it important that we, the Church, engage in this conversation? How do we engage in a helpful way?
We hope you find this hour insightful and engaging. If you want to hear more from this workshop, contact us (dreed@prcoc.org) and we can get you hooked up with the rest of it. If you want to know more about Providence Road, go to our website https://www.prcoc.org/
