Tara Pyfrom has an incredible story of survival and recovery. Born and raised in the Bahamas, Tara and her wife, their young daughter and five dogs found themselves trapped in their home after Hurricane Dorian made landfall and changed their lives forever. Over two days, they waited and made decisions that they hoped would sustain their lives, uncertain if they would ever be rescued from the terrible circumstances that the family found themselves in. Even after their eventual rescue when the waters finally receded, they were forced to leave their home and start fresh in a new country and deal with the aftermath of PTSD and starting over.
You can learn more about Tara and details of her upcoming book to be released in 2025 at https://tarapyfrom.com/ as well as connecting with her social media accounts of Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

I’m so thankful that I was connected with Gilles because what an incredible story he has to tell. Gilles grew up in Campbellton, NB and has been a competitive athlete for most of his life. After experiencing the loss of a few close relationships, Gilles mental health and addiction began to spiral into a very destructive path. On the outside, he was this extreme and competitive athlete, on the inside he was fighting for his life.
Gilles found recovery while simultaneously fueling his passion for helping people to live better lives by staying fit and using science and coaching to give them the extra edge.
Today Gilles is the owner of O2 Max in Dieppe, NB. O2Max is a metabolic and respiratory analysis system that offers a comprehensive and personalized analysis of an individual’s physical fitness. This can be especially useful for athletes and fitness enthusiasts who want to optimize their training and nutrition plans to achieve their goals.
I really appreciated Gilles candor in sharing his struggles and rock bottoms and I can guarantee that you will gain some new perspectives on why what you think you may know about someone can be very different from what they are actually experiencing.

Emily’s story is about a mother’s love and how she navigated the distress of watching her teenage son struggle with poor mental health and addiction. Emily never wavered in her love and commitment to her son’s wellbeing but she did have the tremendous insight to recognize that helping him meant meeting him where he was at and not forcing her own will upon him. For years, she supported him as best she could until a physical health crisis brought him back home for a period of time and became a turning point in their relationship. Emily’s story is truly about persistence and patience and the power of just staying present when someone we love is struggling. Emily is part of a larger network of parents advocating for families impacted by substance use and you can learn more about their work at www.momsstoptheharm.com.
Sophia Recovery Centre is a non-residential community centre providing continuing care programs for women seeking to take their lives back from the wide-ranging impacts of addiction. Since its founding in 2008, the centre has grown to encompass a well-rounded team of professionals and peer support specialists based in three southern New Brunswick communities: Saint John, St Stephen and Rothesay with expansion to Sussex and other New Brunswick communities underway.
Jacqueline & Sam, who hold the position of Program Directors at the KV and Saint John locations, joined me on the podcast to talk about the work they are doing to support women at Sophia Recovery. We were delighted to have Brandi come and join us on the podcast to talk about her work with the Saint John Suicide Prevention Committee. The committee is made up of a team of volunteers of various backgrounds that share a passion for decreasing the stigma associated with mental illness and suicide and decreasing instances of death by suicide by raising awareness, providing education, and supporting mental health initiatives in the local community.
The Suicide Prevention Committees work to identify local needs and reducing barriers and gaps between existing services. Although not a counselling centre in itself, the committee works in partnership with existing programs and services to help make sure that those supports are known and available to anyone who may need help.
If you’d like to learn more about the work of the Saint John Suicide Prevention Committee, visit their website at https://www.sjsuicideprevention.ca/. Additional supports are also available through the Talk Canada Suicide prevention number at 1-833-456-4566 (27/7) or text 45645 (4pm to midnight).
David Muise is one of the co-founders of NuVista Psychedelic Assisted Therapy located in Fredericton NB. After having his own experience with psychedelic medicine following a health problem that wasn’t responding to typical treatment, he became a proponent of helping more people have access to the benefits of psychedelic assisted therapy, especially for mental health conditions when traditional treatments, such as antidepressants or psychotherapy, have not generated expected results.
In this episode, David talks with us about the general process of receiving ketamine assisted therapy, who might be a good fit for receiving this type of treatment and what to expect as a patient. Part of the goal of NuVista Psychedelic Assisted Therapy is to make treatment more accessible by offering lower price points that more accurately reflect the market in Atlantic Canada and moving towards mobile clinics.
This isn’t the first time we’ve had an opportunity to dig deeper into the world of psychedelic assisted therapy and each day there is more and more information and movement towards the potential benefits of incorporating psychedelic medicine into the therapy in the trauma treatment world.
Hope you’ll stay with me and find this episode as engaging as I did recording it.

In this week’s podcast episode, we are talking all about EMDR therapy!
Emily Bushell is the owner of Whole Therapy https://www.wholetherapy.ca with locations in both Dartmouth and Sydney, NS.
Emily is Registered Counselling Therapist and she is certified in EMDR as well as being an EMDR Approved Consultant with the EMDR International Association. Before starting her own private practice in Nova Scotia, Emily worked as a Clinical Counsellor with Coast Mental Health and as a Concurrent Disorders Specialist with Fraser Health Authority in British Columbia. Emily has also worked in a variety of settings in the mental health system including treatment centres, outreach teams, methadone clinics and outpatient care.
Emily and I have known each other for several years now and she’s had a big impact on my own practice as an EMDR therapist and consultant. I was so pleased when Emily agreed to come on the podcast – her first time as a podcast guest! – to talk about EMDR with me and provide an opportunity for listeners to really understand why EMDR therapy has continued to grow in popularity and practice over the past several years.
Justin Nash is one of those people that you just instantly feel a connection with. His warmth and sincerity is evident as he spoke to me about his journey through mental illness & addiction.
Justin would be quick to point out that his story never really ends as he continues to manage his mental health and wellbeing. In this episode, Justin speaks candidly about his lowest moments – like being arrested for public nudity - and the steps he took to find his way forward. Justin was admitted on more than one occasion to the in-patient psychiatry unit and worked his way through the mental health system receiving a diagnosis he never fully agreed with while taking medications he was forced to take (and didn’t really believe he needed). His mental health began to improve when he stopped using drugs and alcohol and realized that a lot of his struggles had resulted from a drug-induced psychosis.
Justin credits his sister for introducing him to a more holistic lifestyle and once he began making positive changes around his substance misuse, he felt his life begin to improve.
Never Give Up (www.never-giveup.ca) is the platform Justin has created to spread the message of hope for healing. Never Give Up is the message branded on his website, clothing, hats and other merchandise. Justin hopes that with this platform, he can encourage and support others who are ready to improve their own lives. Justin also has a podcast called “Drinking Juice with Justin”.
We have a major announcement! Rising Tides Healing Centre is joining forces with Town Health Solutions to bring the very best of multi-disciplinary care to New Brunswick and beyond.
A big part of our vision at Rising Tides has always included healing for the mind, body and spirit and creating community. A few months ago now, I was introduced to Dr. Erik Klein and Dr. Dan Comeau, both chiropractors at Town Health Solutions. What was immediately apparent in our conversations was that we were very aligned in our vision of whole person care and deeper healing approaches.
Town Health Solutions began with Erik, working as a solo clinician in 2004 and has steadily grown with Dan on board, in both size, service and locations. Town Health now has 8 clinic locations and 40 associates from various health backgrounds working across Atlantic Canada and is not showing any signs of slowing down. With a promise “results oriented and solution focused” care, Town Health exemplifies what it means to truly provide patient centred, multi-disciplinary care.
We are so pleased to be working along side this wonderful team at Town Health Solutions and I'd invite you to eavesdrop on this delightful conversation I had with Dan and Erik and learn all about what they have already accomplished and what's yet to come!

Welcome to the podcast, Olivia! Olivia is another one of our amazing therapists at Rising Tides. Olivia has a Master's degree in Art Therapy and in this episode, she'll be talking about the ways that art can be integrated into the healing process. As an art therapist, Olivia wants everyone to know that you don't have to be an artist to have a meaningful experience with the use of art in therapy! Art therapy is not about learning the skills associated with creating art but is more focused on the process of using creativity and art in a therapeutic setting.
The general nature of art therapy is flexible, creative, empathetic, and collaborative. Olivia uses a combination of free creativity and structured interventions to foster meaningful experience and work towards therapeutic goals. Olivia whole-heartedly believes that the integration of art making to the therapeutic space opens new pathways for exploration, expression, and healing.

In this episode of the podcast, we are learning all about ketamine-assisted psychotherapy with psychologist, Heidi Fitzgerald. Heidi has 21 years of experience working with adults, children and families and recently discovered a new passion working in ketamine-assisted therapy at Field Trip Health.
There is a growing body of research and evidence supporting the use of ketamine in the treatment of trauma and treatment-resistant mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. Ketamine can be administered in low doses to access the unconscious mind where defences are reduced and the brain is able to freely process information in new ways. Ketamine, used in conjunction with psychotherapy approaches, can enhance the healing process.
Be prepared to learn more about the fascinating world of ketamine-assisted therapy as we chat with Heidi and get to ask her all our burning questions on this topic!
I am so glad that Nancy said yes when I asked her to be on the podcast! As one of our treasured therapists on the Rising Tides team, Nancy brings her spunky personality and infectious energy to our office environment which is appreciated by team members and clients alike.

When asked about her therapeutic approach, Nancy describes it as “learned experience with a disarming charm”
Nancy loves using humour in her therapy sessions and even as she describes some of the painful pieces of her own healing story, her passion, hopefulness and ability to laugh, even after her darkest moments, is clearly evident.

A childhood immigrant from his native Scotland, David has spent a lifetime working alongside some of the most talented leaders across the Canadian landscape. David has served as a street involved Pastor in Toronto and London. His major focuses of ministry were related to social outreach, restorative justice, and learning to wrestle with life and faith in the rapidly evolving social media age.
As someone working to heal from traumatic stress injuries from childhood, David's diagnosis with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in 2018 led him to become a public advocate for the de-stigmatization of mental health and addiction issues (especially when related to generational trauma). He quickly learned the challenges and opportunities this presents, as he himself is one of the examples. Redemptive Trauma: Confession of a Defrocked Priest is a memoir embracing hard truths of trauma to help others heal their own. You can find a copy of his book here: https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/books/redemptive-trauma-confession-of-a/9780228842187-item.htmlToday, David serves as a mental health professional with the Canadian Mental Health Association in Rapid Access Addiction Medidicne; and has just begun work as a 9-1-1 Mobile Crisis Responder with the Toronto Community Crisis Service.
In 2013, Reid, a lifelong athlete, had just arrived at university, ready for his first year of studying and triathlon training at McMaster University when an accidental fall off a bicycle changed everything. An injury to his shoulder not only put a halt to his training but also resulted in a decline in his mental health.
Reid painfully recalls the difficulty of this time in his life, when he no longer felt the happiness that once came so easily to him and he first began experiencing thoughts of not wanting to live anymore. Reid’s shoulder eventually healed and he was able to recover from this period of depression; however, he would soon learn that it wouldn’t be the only time that battling his mental health would become the fiercest competitor he’d ever meet.
As Reid continued on his path towards excellence in triathlon, he found himself questioning who he was outside of this sport that had consumed so much of his recent years. He lost that spark that had once lit up so brightly and once again, found himself looking around and trying to find the joy that had suddenly vanished from his life.
Reid knew he’d need to push even harder this time to achieve the mental wellness he desired and surrounded himself with a team of mental health supporters. He gradually began feeling the fog around him lifting and was able to find his way back to himself.
He credits this time of reflection and perseverance to the success he continues to enjoy in his life today, as a full-time ultra-marathon runner.
Jeff's story begins with the pivotal moment in his life when everything came crashing down around him and he recognized that he could not carry on with the way he was living. Left with no other choices, he began unpacking years of unresolved trauma after receiving a PTSD diagnosis. Jeff engaged with a number of mental health professionals but particularly recalls the day when reiki came into his life and the amazing transformation that began that day.
Jeff credits reiki with teaching him how to understand his pain in a new way. Jeff has been training, practicing and learning reiki for nearly 10 years and is registered with the Canadian Reiki Association as a Practitioner and Master Teacher. Jeff is also a Certified Forest Therapy Guide with the Association of Nature & Forest Therapy. You can learn more about Jeff and the services he provides at: http://www.thecovehealing.ca.

Many women stay in an abusive relationship out of fear, financial security, lack of choice, the abuser threatening suicide, or even a hope for change. Many survivors feel ashamed of their situation. In today's episode I am talking with Kelly from Saint John Domestic Violence Outreach. Kelly shares her experiences of helping women who have been impacted by the trauma of domestic violence and also sheds some light on the supports and resources that are available in our community.
As I spoke with Kelly, it become clear that this is not issue that just impacts some people and not others. Anyone can find themselves in an abusive relationship. It’s important that we all become more aware of the signs that someone we love, or even ourselves, may be at risk of violence and knowing how to intervene if it does occur.
If you or someone you know requires more support, please contact Domestic Violence Outreach at 566-5960 for more information.
