Do you know how films are really filmed? It sure surprised me when I got into it.
For one thing, most scenes are filmed with just one camera.

I love storytelling. Love how stories speak to our souls because they help us focus on our own personal journeys.
There's a principle in story structure called, "The lie that you believe." Or the lie the character believes.
Part of story arch is that through the process of the journey the main character starts to see things more clearly and they come to realize that what they've been believing has been a lie.
I think that's where I am right now in my personal journey.

Turns out I've been giving off a lot of negative energy lately. I didn't realize I was doing this until I went out to dinner the other night with some dear friends of ours who were distraught about how they were going to find their new house.
Seems what we focus on expands.
And when I've been focusing on fear and worry about how I'm going to build a following enough to have a sustainable business... it come across negatively to everyone.
If you've caught my episodes in the last little bit, I've come to the realization that I've had some foundational beliefs all wrong because I've believed that it was all on me.

God's got this, and I just need to surrender and let Him drive.

OK, this totally surprised me.
I've been adamant against fear all my life.
I've believe that fear is in opposition to faith.
Basically, that it's fear in reverse gear because you're believing in something you totally don't want to have happen.

There's so much we can learn from modern Movement Leaders...
Including the really bad ones—like Hitler.
What a horrible, despicable human being he was. At the same time, what a fantastic leader he was too!
So how can we learn from him and turn things around so we're only using our powers for good?

The first time I heard it, I thought it was made up.

Had an interesting conversation with my Cute Wife about things people do that destroy our confidence and trust in them.
For her, it's bad editing.
If she reads a book by them and they're teaching... say how to be fit and healthy through this nutrition path... and if they did not hire a good editor, it makes her not trust the science.
For me, it's about the photography or production quality of their work.
So while I teach people all the time the first principle is to show up. Right behind that is the principle of stand out.

Do you know the story behind the making of the movie Rocky with Sylvester Stallone?
It shocked me when I learned this. And it's stuck with me through the years as his personal story is more of an underdog story than the actual movie.

Before Stallone sold the script he had less than $200 in the bank and he had just sold his dog because he did't want his dog to go hungry.
...and then he almost didn't sell it—not because someone didn't want to buy it, but because they wanted to put a limit on it.

I had a friend call me up,

Had a sweet experience doing some filming for a friend who helps people with addition recovery. Often he works with families of an addicted loved one. The elusive thing for them is hope.
*Will he ever change?
Will she ever desire to be free?
When will he start making healthy choices?*
Hope is elusive.
But as my friend points out, everyone gets their moment. It may not happen in this life, but God will provide a way for them to experience something that will open up an opportunity for them to escape.
Their moment's going to come. YOUR moment's gonna come.
God will provide a way.

Turns out I've been thinking about success all wrong. And in a super toxic way too.
Especially for an entrepreneur/artist.
See, as an artist or entrepreneur we often judge success by external measures. How much money did this make? How many people watched it? How many ticket sales did it generate?
Yes, we want to make an impact, but impact is not necessarily measured by numbers.
One of my favorite characters is a guy who ended up being a martyr. Just before he's burned burned at the stake he sees one guy stand up for him and he's immediately chased out by armed guards. He probably went to his grave feeling like he was a failure, yet his testimony changed the entire history of the rest of the Book of Mormon. The guys name: Abenadi. Cool story. Look it up.

This was a crazy, but amazing experience.
I was in the middle of doing a 5-day challenge where I was on each night live-streaming on video and I got an idea.
It was actually a few hours before I went live that I got this idea.
"What if for tonight's broadcast I interview myself?"
It was a summit-style event and each night I had interviewed different experts.
Tonight I didn't have anyone.
Anyway, the impression led to a really fun experience where I was able to interview myself from 7 years ago. I heard about my hopes and dreams and the impact I was going to make in the world with my latest project.
...but since I knew what the next 7 years would bring, I was able to point out hard lessons that I'd be learning... lessons that may help you avoid the pain and pitfalls I endured.
I know this interview is a bit crazy... and I don't even know if it'll work as an audio-only experience (viewers could tell which Scott I was by which camera I was looking in). I hope it helps you realize how important marketing is in actually getting your God-given idea out into the world.

Ray Liotta, the actor that plays Shoeless Joe Jackson (and "The Voice") in Field of Dreams has just died. When I heard the news I was immediately saddened. That movie means a lot to me. Not just because of the emotional experience I had the first time watching it at age 17 and thinking about my Dad... but because of the message it has for entrepreneurs.
...and MOST entrepreneurs get this wrong.
They mis-hear the line to "If you build it THEY will come," which to them means if you build a fantastic product or service people will naturally flock to you.
They won't
And the movie never says that line.
Instead the movie presents the main character with heart-stretching tasks that to accomplish pushes him to the very edge. Of looking crazy. Of common sense. Of financial ruin.
But if you listen to the real message...
The message that comes from "The Voice," you will find a message that will help you find your field of dreams.

OK, today's episode is courtesy of a conversation I had with my cute wife, Becca. During the recording of this, it's Becca's final week as a high school English teacher. She's done this job (fantastically, I might add) for 10 years, and is now stepping away to pursue some of her other talents. Specifically writing novels.
In her final week of teaching high school students she taught them a lesson on the difference between fitting in and belonging... and I wanted to share it with you because I believe Movement Leaders are called to "gather" their people, serve them, and keep them safe. A huge part of that is giving them a place where they feel they BELONG.

Had some super cool news from a friend of mine today who has been struggling for years to get a story of Helmuth Hübener, a young boy who defied Hitler with underground printings, made into a movie.
Matt Whitaker is a director friend of mine who has felt called to tell this story. He's worked for YEARS on trying to secure the funding... and it hasn't worked out (yet). Now something may have changed that will allow him to do this and it's through the power of crowdfunding.
And with this new platform, he doesn't have to remain silent about it (there are lots of regulations you have to abide by when seeking funding from major donors). He can share his voice and his experience and he has.

I pay attention to patterns. This thought has come up several times—even though I've tried to suppress it. Swords sound violent. I'm not into violence. Or hatred. Or unkindnes.
Grabbing a sword has nothing to do with violence, hatred, or unkindness when it's God's sword of Truth. When it's His word.
See, God wants you to cut through the darkness and confusion in the world. God's word is known for being "sharper than a two-edged sword."
But I'm not talking about quoting Bible verses at people.
Or chasing them around with scripture on your tongue.
I'm talking about sharing the thoughts and ideas that God puts into your mind and your heart...
...and sharing them in the vernacular that they're given to you (which is often your own vernacular).

I've had an amazing experience that I've mostly kept to myself. It was so weird and bizarre that I thought people would think I was wacky for sharing it.
Then I met Matt Tommey.
We chatted on our God's Calling Me To Publish summit-like challenge.
He shared a story that happened to him at 3:09 in the morning.
Twice.
As soon as he saw the pattern, he went downstairs to his studio and looked up Joel 3:09 and got his answer.
God got through to him in two shots... and it took me about 7 years. Still, the pattern was consistent.

Hear this idea lately and It's changed my focus. I used to believe that we weren't supposed to "seek" miracles. Like it was seeking for a sign or something like that. But Russel M. Nelson, who I highly respect his counsel, recently said "Seek and expect miracles."
Honestly, I don't know what the seek part means.

Heard some really cool advice recently that has changed my thinking too. I listed to Myron Golden not too long ago, who talked about reframing what he felt was expensive and what he felt was cheap. I realized I needed to do some of the same switching around of my thinking when I was offered a position to hire some high-end coaching.
I gulped.
It was such a stretch that I had to take out a personal loan.
But when I looked at what indecision had already cost me...
Holy cow! I've already lost an entire year because I didn't jump in on this before.
I'm kind of excited to look back on this episode and have the record of when things dramatically switched for me.
Now I see that it would be too expensive NOT TO buy into this.

I'm big into personal development.
I love it.
As a young commercial filmmaker, I remember listening to the great James Gartner talk about how he would watch a movie with the sound off so he could see if he could tell what was going on with the story just by the cues the director would be giving. The closeups on certain subjects. The distance of others. The scene settings. And the repeating thematic elements.
The next day I started doing the same thing. I'm sure that was one of those things that changed the course of my directing career.

One that was waaay out of my price range.

One thing I forgot to mention while recording this is the concept of "expensive." Is it more expensive to have to take out a loan in order to pay for something you know will help you get to the next level? Or is it more expensive to stay where you're at for another year?

OK, I've been on a physical fitness push for the past two months. 60 days to be exact. Been working on making micro improvements. Wow, has it made differences I didn't know I could make. And they've been so micro that they don't seem like they're going to make much of a difference.

I especially love the 12-step AA program as the success is dependent on us reconnecting with a Higher Power and allowing that Higher Power to pull us out of the mire we're in. Today's episode is helping you avoid some of the pitfalls that for years kept me speaking to deaf ears. Yes, we have desires to serve everyone. But the fact of the matter is, there are those who are not yet ready or willing to listen. Instead of wasting time and energy trying to convince people against their will, instead turn your focus to those who are "Swimming towards you." You call is to gather. To pull your people/family in safe.
Convert the converted... but also speak to those on the fence.
The biggest indicator of them achieving the success they're looking for (whether you're helping them enjoy a healthier lifestyle, relationship, or business), is that they must believe. They must believe that what you're saying will help them get the results they're looking for. And they must believe that they can do it. Belief is the key. And those who are "swimming away" are not in a position to believe you right now.

I've been thinking about this lately and how there are so many people who WANT to do good in the world... and they do a bit. But then they run out of time and money, so they go back to what they were doing before.
Yet, there's a class of people who make it their living to do good. These are the entrepreneurs. These are the people who—because they get paid for doing good, get to do it over and over and over again. In fact, the more good they do, the more capacity they have to do more of it.
While Russ Nelson said, "Education is the difference between wanting to help, and actually being able to," I add to that thought that "Entrepreneurship is the lifestyle that gives you the freedom to do good over and over and over again."

I look at entrepreneurship in a totally different light than I used to as a kid (my Dad was an entrepreneur and I saw the struggle and never wanted that lifestyle for myself.). I just had one that put the last seven-year journey into perspective. I was reminded that God is interested and involved in my life (I've gotta tell you, He's interested and involved in your life too. This blew me away. I had been struggling to make any sort of improvements to my exercise routine. I've had a goal to be able to do a plan for 5 minutes. I started out at 1:30 and after three months I was at... 1:30.
What!?!
Then someone told me the story of the Team England bicycle coach and how he got his team making tiny, microscopic improvements. 1% improvements.
I decided to implement what he taught and add just 1 more second to my plank or 1 more rep with my arm curls, and...

Yes, I understand church faith. But this is different. This is the kind of faith that creates things in our world. Leslie Householder calls this "Rare Faith." What's interesting is that I believe we are always creating things in our lives, but often we're creating the negative. See, fear is just faith in reverse gear. We put our energy into believing something horrible is going to happen to us... and so often we bring those things about.

Here's a limiting belief for you that's been turned on its head. I used to believe that people would only love my media if it was stunning and beautiful and perfect.
I created a TON of that kind of stuff... and crickets.
And because it took so long to create it, I wasn't able to create nearly as often and I felt like I couldn't get my voice out there in the world.
Now I realize the secret is in being able to broadcast easily and effortlessly.

I've been studying the "Masters of Influence" and how it is that they've accomplished so many amazing things. I used to think that they found their success because they had so many followers. Now I realize it's because they GATHER many followers. They pull them together into safe communities.
Gathering your people into a safe community is the secret you must understand for success.

Had a really interesting experience that may be helpful for you. Also, I had a fun "coincidence" with learning this lesson just a day before on one of my mentor's podcasts. Since I believe "coincidence" is God's way of staying anonymous, it was comforting to know He's involved. I saw the movie "The Secret" years ago and part of it seemed really cool and super interesting. And yet part of it made me feel uncomfortable. I liked the idea of being able to create my reality and influence the good things coming into my life... but there was part of this that felt outside of my belief system.
But once the seed is planted, if it's a good seed it tends to grow. My seed of mini-belief in these principles has grown especially once I found in the scriptures references to the "eye of faith" principle. Happy to share with you what I've found.

Your identity is HUGE! I can't stress that enough. So often how we identify is something that keeps us playing small or not living our calling. Today I had a bit of an identity shift as I realized that my mess had indeed become my message. Yeah, I've felt that feeling. And for the longest time I let it eat away at me until I discovered an obvious truth that I was missing. Funny how some of the simple things can get us all twisted around and bent out of shape.
The secret is: If you've got the ache, it means you're among The Called. And the important thing to remember is that God didn't give you the ache to torment you. We talk about that in today's episode.

I've known for a long time that it's our beliefs that keep us stuck. I remember my first time hearing about "limiting beliefs" and I thought, "Yes, that's what I've got. That's what's shackling me." Over the years I've removed many of my limiting beliefs, but I recognize I'm not yet where I want to be. Jack Canfield counsels in his big success book that we must take responsibility for where we are right now. Yes, I believe that, but how do I change? Yesterday, while studying some of Russell Brunson's stuff I may have stumbled on the answer.

People tell us all the time about how to set goals so we can actually achieve them. Some suggest we have this total clarity of purpose and visualize our outcome. Many Olympic athletes fall into this category. Yet, a mentor I totally admire has counseled me "Scott, we don't put our faith in outcomes," which I don't fully understand. Inner conflict, you see?
