Imagine a world where AI transforms how we approach organizational change management. Join us as we chat with Tapio Kumalainen, leader of HowSpace's North American operations, about the intriguing journey of HowSpace. From its roots as a human-centric consulting firm in Finland to an AI-powered change management platform, HowSpace has been integrating AI tools since 2015. Tapio delves into how AI can enhance decision-making by processing vast data sets, potentially rendering traditional methods like change readiness surveys obsolete. We also explore the ethical considerations, emphasizing transparency and addressing the challenges of bias.
One of the core aspects we discuss is the critical role of feedback and transparency during organizational change. Tapio shares valuable insights on the flexibility and significance of anonymity in feedback systems, influenced by cultural contexts and the nature of the questions asked. Tracking sentiment over time emerges as a powerful tool to reveal patterns and guide organizations through changes more effectively. We also tackle potential apprehensions leaders might have about unfiltered feedback and the advantages that transparency brings, along with how different cultural norms impact feedback within multinational corporations.
Looking ahead, Tapio and I discuss the future of AI in change management and the transformative possibilities it holds. From efficiency gains to streamlining activities and enhancing agility, AI promises to revolutionize the field. We highlight the rapid pace of AI development and the exciting innovation on the horizon, despite varied human acceptance rates. Practical applications such as custom GPTs and tools for managing change experiments are examined, showcasing how non-technical users can harness AI platforms. Finally, we touch on productivity and sustainability concerns, offering practical advice for AI skeptics and addressing environmental impacts related to AI power consumption. Tune in to grasp the full spectrum of AI's potential in reshaping change management!

Is Agile a relic of a bygone era or a methodology evolving right before our eyes? We grapple with this conundrum, reminiscing about Agile's humble beginnings and its expansion, much like the growth of the NHL. With Ken Rickard and guest insights from Michael Laurie of Bayer, this episode is a deep dive into the essence of Agile in today's fast-paced world. We talk about transforming the managerial landscape, where companies like Morningstar are pioneering high-trust, high-accountability environments, questioning the very role of a traditional manager in the process.
Agile's philosophical underpinnings take center stage as we discuss its commercialization and how newer generations embed it into their work culture—almost instinctively. We unfold the layers of Agile's metamorphosis, scrutinizing movements like "Take Agile Back" and Agile Uprising that challenge homogenized frameworks. Odds are you're in the 91% of the population who've abandoned their new years resolution according to inc.com
Abandoning these resolutions have reached meme status but does that mean we should stop doing them? What's the real value and purpose behind creating new years resolutions?
In this episode I talk about:
- rituals and ceremonies bring focus
- how agile approaches benefit from rituals and ceremonies
- being explicit about exploration vs wanting to get to action
- why organizations need temporary structures and point-in-time experiments that lead to permanent change.

This week's episode is from a lean coffee session where I was asked for the millionth time; which agile scaling framework is the best?
Seeing the love and hate reactions to agile scaling frameworks is remarkable, but people miss how eerily similar they all are when you peek under the covers. Since the dawn of humanity, people have felt the need to organize themselves. Our organizational structures mimic social structures, and there are four main tenants of organizational design.
Learn those, and learn how to think instead of following the method or framework.

Sigh. Here we go again. I hosted a private lean coffee session a couple of week ago and one of the highest voted questions was:
"how to you ensure successful change when we KNOW 70% of changes fail?"I wrote about this over a decade ago...and before me, others like Jen Frahm, Heather Stagl, Torben Rick and more have debunked this ridiculous 'stat'.
In this episode I'll break down where it came from, what the 'data' says and most importantly, what the heck could you do with the data if it were true?
Then, hopefully, I'll never talk about this again!

The armchair quarterbacks are out in full force pretending they can do a better job of 'managing twitter' than good ol' Elon. Reactions to what he's done at twitter range from "this is a clinic in mis-management" to "Elon doesn't know good change management!!"
Many people have asked me what I think about Elon's "approach to change". I don't like commenting on stuff like this because Elon evokes such a broad spectrum of reactions, but what the heck, here goes nothing.

This episode was inspired by a question on one of our recent Linked In posts.
How does Lean Change manage change at scale with 90,000 people across 3,000 locations when you don't have access to 99% of the people?
Oddly enough, the same week I had the same question from two separate lean coffee sessions in my workshops.
So is there some substance to the phrase "building change capability is the best way to ensure successful change?", or is it just another click-bait, nonsensical statement that litters the internet and gets you a gazillion likes/shares/retweets?

As you know this show is live, but this episode was completely off the cuff right after a chat with some folks from Pepperdine University about benchmarking in change management.
Topics include:
- how useful are benchmarks?
- what alternatives exist?
- how can we flip from using benchmarks after the fact, to using them for input into changing the change?
- how can we measure our measurements?
What do you do when a manager throws The Five Dysfunctions of a Team book on the table in your team meeting and says: "YOU ALL have a problem, read this book!!"
This week's question from a recent lean coffee session with Jorge Ulsen's LCM Foundations class:
``` SR: What innovative practice would you recommend for internal team management when mistrust is high?
```
That question immediately brought back the experience of our team manager telling us we had a trust problem and that we needed to read this book.
You can DO agile, you have to BE agile! Leaders just need to change their mindset! Culture eats strategy for breakfast!
Easy answers. We all love'em, but how useful are they? Here's a story about a coach who told me the brutal truth about a plan I had to help an organization change.

Someone recently contacted me asking for a brochure that compares the "Lean Change Framework" to "Method X" as they are trying to decide on what best practice framework to replace their current one with.
This is a common question I get. People approach me and say "we use method X, it's great, we love it, but we suck at change and need a new one." In this episode I'll share 4 thoughts for what to do when you think your change framework sucks, and what you can do about it.

This week's question comes from a lean coffee session from Lean Change Management Facilitator Jorge Ulsen's workshop.
I spent most of 2014 to 2020 traveling the world, and I've had this question many times over the years. Everyone wants to know: "who in the world does change management well? We're SO far behind, we don't innovate and we don't use modern ideas..."
In this episode I'll share why the industry matters more than the country, thoughts on power distant index and a few ideas for how you can pull yourself outta the soup!
