James 2:14-17, New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Surely that faith cannot save, can it? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? 17 So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.
Micah 6:6-8
With what shall I come before the Lord and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before God with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? God has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Joshua 24:14-15 Inclusive Bible (Egalitarian Translation)
Joshua then said, “I now call upon you to revere and serve YHWH completely and sincerely. Cast off the gods that your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt, and worship YHWH alone. If you do not want to worship YHWH, then make the decision today whom you will worship, even if it is the gods of your ancestors beyond the Euphrates or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you live. As for me and my household, we will worship YHWH.”
Matthew 14:22-27 NRSV
22 Immediately he made the disciples get into a boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land,[a] for the wind was against them. 25 And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Ephesians 4:1-3: Egalitarian Translation
I plead with you, then, in the name of our Redeemer, to lead a life worthy of your calling. Treat one another charitably, in complete selflessness, gentleness, and patience. Do all you can to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the peace that binds you together.
Matthew 14:13-16:
When Jesus heard about John, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. When the crowds learned this, they followed him on foot from the cities. When Jesus arrived and saw a large crowd, he had compassion for them and healed those who were sick. That evening his disciples came and said to him, “This is an isolated place and it’s getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”
But Jesus said to them, “There’s no need to send them away. You give them something to eat.”
Matthew 9: 35-38:
Jesus traveled among all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, announcing the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness. Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were troubled and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The size of the harvest is bigger than you can imagine, but there are few workers. Therefore, plead with the overseer of the harvest to send out workers for his harvest.”
Psalm 24:1-4:
The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it,
the world and its inhabitants too.
Because God is the one who established it on the seas;
God set it firmly on the waters.
Who can ascend the Lord’s mountain?
Who can stand in (God's) holy sanctuary?
Only the one with clean hands and a pure heart;
the one who hasn’t made false promises,
the one who hasn’t sworn dishonestly.
Luke 4:16b-19 Egalitarian Translation
Entering the synagogue on the Sabbath, as was his habit, Jesus stood up to do the reading. When the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed him, he unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: "The Spirit of our God is upon me: because the Most High has anointed me to bring Good News to those who are poor. God has sent me to proclaim liberty to those held captive, recovery of sight to those who are blind, and release to those in prison-- to proclaim the year of our God's favor.
2 Corinthians 8:13-15, The Inclusive Bible:
This doesn't mean that by giving relief to others, you ought to make things difficult for yourselves! It's just a question of balancing what happens to be your surplus now against their present need; one day they may have something to spare that will supply your own need. That is how we strike a balance, as scripture says: "The one who gathered much had no excess, and the one who gathered little did not go short."
Psalm 107: Give thanks for Yahweh's goodness, for God's love endures forever. Let these be the words of Yahweh's redeemed, those redeemed from the oppressor's clutches, those brought home from foreign lands, from east and west, from northern lands and southern seas. Some lost their way in the wilderness, in the wasteland, not knowing how to reach an inhabited town. They were hungry and thirsty, and their courage was running low. They called to Yahweh in their trouble, and God rescued them from their sufferings, guiding them by a direct route to an inhabited town. Let them thank Yahweh for this great love, for the marvels done for all people. For God has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things.
1 Samuel 16:6-7:
When they arrived, and Samuel saw Eliab, and said to himself, "Surely, God's anointed stands here before YHWH." But YHWH said to Samuel, "Pay no attention to appearance and height; I have rejected him. YHWH does not see as mortals see; mortals see only appearances but YHWH sees into the heart."
Mark 3:31-35, Egalitarian Translation
Jesus' mother and brothers arrived and sent in a message asking for him. A crowd was sitting around Jesus, and they said to him, "Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you." Jesus replied, "Who is my mother? Who is my family?" And looking around at everyone there, Jesus said, "This is my family! Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my sister, my brother, my mother."
Lectio Divina: 1 Samuel 17:38-40:
Saul clothed David with his armor; he put a bronze helmet on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail. David strapped Saul’s sword over the armor, and he tried in vain to walk, for he was not used to them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I am not used to them.” So David removed them. Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the wadi and put them in his shepherd’s bag, in the pouch; his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine.
Acts 2:1-4, NRSV:
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
Psalm 106:6-9:
We have sinned the way our forebears did,
gone astray and given in to corruption.
Our ancestors, when they were in Egypt,
didn’t perceive your wondrous works,
didn’t remember your abundant love,
but there by the sea, by the Sea of Reeds, they rebelled.
Yet you saved them, O God, for the sake of your Name,
to make your mighty power known.
You rebuked the Sea of Reeds, and it became dry;
you led them through the deep as if it were a desert.
Exodus 3:10-12, Egalitarian Translation
(YHWH said:) "Now, go! I will send you to Pharaoh, to bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and lead the children of Israel out of Egypt?” God answered, “I will be with you, and this is the sign by which you will know that it is I who have sent you: after you bring my people out of Egypt, you will all worship at this very mountain.”
Psalm 27:11-14 -NRSV
11 Teach me your way, O Lord,
and lead me on a level path
because of my enemies.
12 Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries,
for false witnesses have risen against me,
and they are breathing out violence.
13 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord!
Selections from 2 Corinthians 5:16-21, Egalitarian Translation
“From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view…If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to God’s self through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation. …In Christ, God was reconciling the world to God’s self…and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we…entreat you on behalf of Christ, BE reconciled to God.”
Luke 11:33-36:
You don’t light a lamp only to hide it in the cellar or to put it under a bucket. You put it on a stand where people see it when they come in. The lamp of your body is your eye. If your eye is sound, the whole body is filled with light. But if your eye is diseased, your body is filled with darkness. See to it then that the light in you doesn’t fade into darkness. If your whole body is full of light, however, with no darkness in it, it will be completely lit—the way it is when the light of a lantern shines on you.
1 John 1:5-2:2 (The Egalitarian Translation)
This, then, is the message we heard from Jesus
and declare to you:
God is light,
and in God there is no darkness at all.
If we say we have intimacy with God
while still living in darkness,
we are liars
and do not live in truth.
But if we live in the light,
as God is in the light,
we are one with each other,
and the blood of Jesus, the Only Begotten,
purifies us from all sin.
Mark 16:1-8:
When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him (Jesus). And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?" When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, "Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you." So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to any one, for they were afraid.
Psalm 118: 19-21:
Let the doors of righteousness be opened;
we will go in and give thanks to the Lord.
This is the gate of the Lord;
it is opened for the righteous.
We will give praise, for God has heard us
and has come to save us.
Scripture: Psalm 119:103-105
How sweet is the taste of your promises--sweeter than honey in my mouth! Through your precepts, I gain discernment, and because of them I hate every wrong path. Now I know your word is a lamp for my steps, for the path just ahead of me.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 Inclusive Translation
There is a time for everything,
a season for every purpose under heaven:
a season to be born and a season to die;
a season to plant and a season to harvest;
a season to hurt and a season to heal;
a season to tear down and a season to build up;
a season to cry and a season to laugh;
a season to mourn and a season to dance;
a season to scatter stones and a season to gather them;
a season for holding close and a season for holding back;
a season to seek and a season to lose;
a season to keep and a season to throw away;
a season to tear and a season to mend;
a season to be silent and a season to speak;
a season to love and a season to hate;
a season for hostilities and a season for peace.
Luke 22:39-41, 45-46
Then Jesus went out and made his way as usual to the Mount of Olives; the disciples accompanied him. When they reached the place, Jesus said to them, "Pray that you not be put to the test."
Then Jesus withdrew about a stone's throw from the, knelt down and prayed, "Abba, if it's your will, take this cup form me; yet not my will but yours be done."
When Jesus rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and fund them sleeping, exhausted with grief. He said to them, "Why do you sleep? Wake up, and pray that you not be subjected to the trial."
Psalm 145:8-10: The Inclusive Translation
YHWH, you are gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and rich in love.
YHWH, you are good to all
and compassionate toward all your creatures.
All your creatures will praise you, YHWH,
and your holy people will bless you.
Acts 17:23-25 (The Inclusive Translation)
(Paul says) "Now , what you are worshiping in ignorance I intend to make known to you. For the God who made the world and all that is in it, the Sovereign of heaven and earth, doesn't live in sanctuaries made by human hands, and isn't served by humans, as if in need of anything. No! God is the One who gives everyone life, breath—everything."
Mark 9:2-8:
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, "This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!" Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.
Isaiah 40:28-31 NRSV
Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
Mark 1:21-26: The Inclusive Bible:
They came to Capernaum, and on the Sabbath, Jesus entered the synagogue and began to teach. The people were spellbound by the teaching, because Jesus taught with an authority that was unlike their religious scholars. Suddenly a person with an unclean spirit appeared in their synagogue. It shrieked, "What do you want from us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are-- the Holy One of God!" Jesus rebuked the spirit sharply: "Be quiet! Come out of that person!" At that the unclean spirit convulsed the possessed one violently, and with a loud shriek it came out.
Genesis 1:1-5:
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
Isaiah 9:2b,6 (NRSV)
We, the people who have walked in darkness, have seen a great light;
those who have lived in a land of deep darkness- on them light has shined.
For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
1 John, 4:7-8:
Beloved,
let us love one another
because love is of God;
everyone who loves is begotten of God
and has knowledge of God.
Those who do not love have known nothing of God,
for God is love.
Isaiah 61:1 NRSV:
The spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me;
he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,
to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and release to the prisoners;
John 16:32-33:
(Jesus said) "An hour is coming—in fact, it has already come— when you will all be scattered and go your own ways, leaving me alone; yet I can never be alone, for Abba God is with me. I have told you all this that in me you may find peace. You will suffer in the world. But take courage! I have overcome the world.”
Ezekiel 34:11-12,14-16:
For thus says Sovereign YHWH: I myself will search for my sheep; I will seek them out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when their flocks are scattered in every direction, so I will search for my sheep and rescue them, I will feed them on good pasture land, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing ground. I myself will tend my flock and have it lie down, thus says Sovereign YHWH. I will seek out the lost, I will return the strayed, I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and I will watch over the fat and the sleek. I will be a true shepherd to them.
Psalm 90:1-2
YHWH, you have been our refuge
from one generation to the next.
Before the mountains were born,
you brought forth the earth and the world;
you are God without beginning or end.
Wisdom of Solomon 6:12-14:
Wisdom shines brightly and never fades.
She is seen by those who love Her
and is found by those who seek Her.
She reveals herself
to all who desire to know Her,
and those who rise early to search for Her
will not grow weary of the journey,
for they will find Her seated
at the door of their own homes.
Psalm 43 - Inclusive Translation
Vindicate me, God!
Plead my cause before unjust judges!
Rescue me from a lying, deceitful accuser.
For you, O God, are my stronghold, my defense.
Why have you forgotten me?
Why do you keep me in mourning,
oppressed by an unseen enemy?
Send forth your light and your truth--
let them guide me,
let them bring me to your holy mountain,
to your dwelling place.
Then at last I'll go up again
to the altar of God,
the God of my joy and delight.
My harp and lyre will sing your praise once again,
O God, my God.
"Why so dispirited?" I ask myself.
"Why so churned up inside? Hope in God!"
I know I'll praise God once again,
for you are my Deliverance;
you are my God.
Matthew 22:34-40:
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had left the Sadducees speechless, they gathered together, and one of them, an expert on the Law, attempted to trick Jesus with this question: "Teacher, which commandment of the Law is the greatest?" Jesus answered: "You must love the Most High God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. That is the greatest and first commandment. The second is like it; You must love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments the whole Law is based-- and the Prophets as well."
Deuteronomy 6:4-7a:
Hear, O Israel:
YHWH, our God, YHWH is One!
You are to love YHWH, your God,
with all your heart,
and with all your soul,
and with all your strength.
Let these words that I command you today
be written in your heart.
Teach them diligently to your children,
and repeat them constantly—
Exodus 20:18-21
When the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, and heard the sound like blaring trumpets, and saw the smoking mountain, they shook in fear. Keeping their distance, they said to Moses, “Speak to us and we will listen, but do not let God speak to us, or it will surely be our death.” But Moses said, “Don’t be afraid. God’s coming this way was simply a test for you, to give you a sense of awe and reverence, and to keep you from sinning.” The people kept their distance, while Moses went up into the darkness where God was.
Psalm 19: 7-10:
Your law, YHWH, is perfect;
it refreshes the soul.
Your rule is to be trusted;
it gives wisdom to the naive.
Your purposes, O God, are right;
they gladden the heart.
Your command is clear;
it gives light to the eyes.
Holding you in awe, YHWH, is purifying;
it endures.
Your decrees are steadfast,
and all of them just.
They are more precious than gold,
than the purest of gold,
and sweeter than honey,
than honey fresh from the comb.
Psalm 25:4-7:
Show me your ways, YHWH! Teach me your paths!
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation.
I wait all the day long for you.
Remember your mercies, YHWH, your love—
your ancient and unwavering love!
Pardon the sins of my youth
and my rebellious ways;
remember me because of your love,
because of your goodness, YHWH!
John 13:12-15:
After washing their feet, Jesus put his clothes back on and returned to the table. He said to them, "Do you understand what I have done for you? You call me "Teacher," and "Sovereign"--and rightly, for so I am. If I, then—your Teacher and Sovereign—have washed your feet, you should wash each other's feet. I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you."
Exodus 14:19-21a:
Then the angel of God, who was leading the Israelites, moved to their rear—the pillar of cloud left the front of their number and took up position behind them, between the Israelites and the Egyptians. All during the night the cloud provided light to one side and darkness to the other side, so that there was no contact between them. Then Moses stretched his hand over the sea, and YHWH swept the sea with a strong east wind throughout the night and so turned it into dry land.
Matthew 18:15-16,18:
(Jesus said) “If your sister or brother should commit some wrong against you, go and point out the error, but keep it between the two of you. If she or he listens to you, you have won a loved one back; if not, try again, but take one or two others with you, so that every case may stand on the word of two or three witnesses. . . The truth is, whatever you declare bound on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you declare loosed on earth will be loosed in heaven.
Genesis 12:1-2:
YHWH said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people, and the home of your parents, and go to a place I will show you. I will make of you a great people. I will bless you and make your name so great that it will be used in blessings.
Exodus: 1:8 -12 The Inclusive Translation
A new Pharaoh- one who did not know Joseph- came to power in Egypt. Pharaoh said to the Egyptians, "Look at how powerful the Israelites have become, and how they outnumber us! We need to deal shrewdly with their increase, against a time of war when they might turn against us and join our enemy, and so escape out of the country." So they oppressed the Israelites with overseers who put them to forced labor; and with them they built the storage cities of Pitom and Ra'amses. Yet the more the Israelites were oppressed, the more they multiplied and burst forth, until the Egyptians dreaded the Israelites.
Psalm 67:
Let the peoples praise you, O God, let all the peoples praise you! Let the nations shout and sing for joy, for you dispense true justice to the world— you guide the nations of the earth! Let the peoples shout and sing for joy; let all the peoples praise you! The land has given its harvest: God, our God, has blessed us. May God bless us, and may God be revered even to the ends of the earth!
Matthew 14:13-14, Inclusive Version
When Jesus heard about the beheading, he left there by boat and went to a deserted place to be alone. The crowds heard of this and followed him from their towns on foot. When Jesus disembarked and saw the vast throng, his heart was moved with pity, and he healed their sick.
Genesis 28:10-12, 16-18, Inclusive Translation:
Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran. When he reached a certain place, he passed the night there. He took a rock and used it for a headrest and lay down to sleep there. During the night he had a dream: there was a ladder, standing on the ground with its top reaching to heaven; and messengers of God were going up and coming down the ladder.
Then Jacob woke and said, “Truly, YHWH is in this place, and I never knew it!” He was filled with trembling and said, “How awe-inspiring this place is! This is nothing less than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven!”
Psalm 18:1-3:
I love you, YHWH, my strength. YHWH—my mountain crag, my fortress, my rescuer, my God, my rock behind whom I take refuge, my shield, my horn of deliverance, my stronghold! The One whom I praise, and to whom I call, is YHWH.
Jesus said: "Come to me, all you who labor and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon your shoulders and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. Here you will find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
How long, YHWH? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my anguish, and wallow in despair all day long? How long will my enemy win over me? Look at me! Answer me, YHWH, my God! Give light to my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed,” lest my foes rejoice when I fall. I trust in your love; my heart rejoices in the deliverance you bring. I’ll sing to you, YHWH, for being so good to me.
Psalm 69:13-18 New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition
13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, O God. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love, answer me. With your faithful help 14 rescue me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. 15 Do not let the flood sweep over me or the deep swallow me up or the Pit close its mouth over me. 16 Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me. 17 Do not hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress—make haste to answer me. 18 Draw near to me; redeem me; set me free because of my enemies.
Genesis 18:1-5:
YHWH appeared to Abraham by the oak grove of Mamre, while Abraham sat at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. Looking up, Abraham saw three travelers standing nearby. When he saw them, Abraham ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them; and bowing to the ground, said, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please do not pass by our tent. Let some water be brought, that you may bathe your feet, and then rest yourselves beneath this tree. As you have come to your faithful one, let me bring you a little food, that you may refresh yourselves. Afterward, you may go on your way.”
Today, Jenny interviews Gary Commins, the author of "Evil and the Problem of Jesus." This is a book that flips old questions about God and evil on their heads.
About the book:
Evil and the Problem of Jesus approaches age-old questions about God’s relationship with evil (theodicy) from an entirely fresh angle. Rather than tweaking airy abstractions, it makes Jesus’ interactions with evil our primary source for thinking about theodicy.
This Christ-centered approach reveals the failure of traditional theodicy to be intellectually convincing or spiritually satisfying. Unlike that fossilized intellectual heritage, Christodicy (evil-and-Jesus) provides original insights into divine power, presence, and love that help us reengage the God Jesus reveals and the evil Jesus challenges. Presenting Jesus as a model for how to be fully human, it crafts new ways to envision our own multidimensional relationships with God and with evil.
Written with both breadth and focus, the book includes pastoral experiences of tragedy, suffering, and evil; retraces philosophical, multifaith, and biblical insights; and explores the ways the Gospels describe Jesus’ complex interactions with evil.
Evil and the Problem of Jesus asks pointed questions and offers thoughtful conceptual frameworks to help people live more faithfully, compassionately, wisely, and justly in response to the evils around us, among us, and within us.
Psalm 33:1-5 - Inclusive Translation
Sing out your joy to YHWH, you who love justice— praise is fitting for loyal hearts. Praise YHWH with the harp, and play music with a ten-stringed lyre! Sing God a new song, play with all your skill, and with shouts of joy! For the word of YHWH is true and everything God does can be trusted. YHWH loves justice and right and fills the earth with love.
Matthew 28:16-20:
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but they doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Rev. Jenny Caughman takes over the microphone today, and we have an always-brilliant discussion about this week's sermon in our "I Don't Believe in That God Either" series. Questions for today: does scripture present a clear, unified understanding of God? Does scripture show an evolving understanding of God? Is it pronounced "ee-ther" or "eye-ther?" We report, you decide.
Psalm 105:24-28, the Inclusive Translation:
YHWH, what variety you have created,
arranging everything so wisely!
the earth is filled with your creativity!
There’s the vast expanse of the sea,
teeming with countless creatures,
living things large and small,
with the ships going to and fro
and Leviathan whom you made to frolic there.
All creatures depend on you
to feed them at the proper time.
Give it to them—they gather it up.
open your hand—they are well satisfied.
"Saved" and "Chosen" are words with religious meanings, and they often used to say that God favors one person or group over another. What does Jesus say about these ideas? Today, Mark and Steve discuss last Sunday's sermon in the series, "I Don't Believe in That God Either".
By the way, is it pronounced ee-ther or eye-ther?

(Jesus said) This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. And you are my friends, if you do what I command you. I no longer speak of you as subordinates, because a subordinate doesn’t know a superior’s business. Instead, I call you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have learned from Abba God.
This conversation is the fourth in our series of conversations about the sermon series, "I Don't Believe In That God Either." This time, Mark and Steve take on what is often the most controversial topic in our churches. They agreed that this was their best conversation yet; please listen and let us know if you agree.
1 John 2:8b-11, the Inclusive Translation:
What I am writing to you is indeed a new commandment. Its truth is seen in Christ and in you, because the night is passing and the true light is already shining. Those who claim to be in the light but hate their neighbors are still in the dark. But those who love their neighbors are living in the light and need not be afraid of stumbling. Those who hate their neighbors are in the darkness and do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.
Have you found it difficult to reconcile "God is Love" with the God of hellfire? If so, you're not alone. Hear what Rev. Denna Hornby has to say about her sermon, "God of Hellfire."
John 14:1-4, The Inclusive Translation:
"Don't let your hearts be troubled.
You have faith in God;
have faith in me as well.
In God's house there are many dwelling places;
otherwise, how could I have told you
that I was going to prepare a place for you?
I am indeed going to prepare a place for you,
and then I will come back to take you with me,
that where I am
there you may be as well.
You know the way that leads to where I am going."
This week Mark and Steve discuss the second sermon in the series, "I Don't Believe in That God Either," which deals with the idea some have that if we simply say the right words, God will check a box and let us "in." You'll be surprised when you hear how conservatives and progressives alike fall short on this one.
John 10:1-5, Inclusive Bible Translation
The truth of the matter is,
whoever doesn't enter the sheepfold
through the gate
but climbs in some other way
is a thief and a robber.
The one who enters through the gate
is the shepherd of the sheep,
the one for whom the keeper opens the gate.
The sheep know the shepherd's voice;
the shepherd calls them by name
and leads them out.
Having led them all out of the fold,
the shepherd walks in front of them
and they follow
because they recognize the shepherd's voice.
They simply won't follow strangers--
they'll flee from them
because they don't recognize the voice of strangers.
In this first podcast in a series, Mark goes behind his sermon and gives some further insight into the struggle that prompted it. We'll do this every week during our "I Don't Believe in That God Either" sermon series!
Many of us traveled vicariously with Jenny as she experienced a journey through the holy sites of Israel a few weeks ago. Join us in this fascinating conversation to hear the stories of what she saw there.
Luke 24:28-31:
By now they were near the village they were going to, and Jesus appeared to be going further. But they said eagerly, "Stay with us. It's nearly evening—the day is practically over." So the savior went in and stayed with them.
After sitting down with them to eat, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, then broke the bread and began to distribute it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus, who immediately vanished from their sight.
John 20:19-21, The Inclusive Translation:
In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were locked in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Temple authorities. Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." Having said this, the savior showed them the marks of crucifixion. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw Jesus, who said to them again, "Peace be with you. As Abba God sent me, so I'm sending you."
Matthew 28:1-10:
After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary of Magdala came with Mary to inspect the tomb. Suddenly, there was a severe earthquake, and an angel of God descended from heaven, rolled back the stone, and sat on it. The angel’s appearance was like lightning, with garments white as snow. The guards shook with fear and fell down as though they were dead. Then the angel spoke, addressing the women: “Don’t be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus the crucified, who is no longer here. Jesus has been raised, exactly as it was foretold. Come and see the burial place. Then go quickly and tell the disciples that Jesus has risen from the dead and now goes ahead of you to Galilee. You will see Jesus there. That is the message I have for you.”
Matthew 26:36-39:
Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane and said to the disciples, "Stay here while I go over there and pray." Jesus took along Peter, James, and John and started to feel grief and anguish. Then he said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death. Please, stay here, and stay awake with me."
Jesus went on a little further and fell prostrate in prayer: "Abba, if it is possible, let this cup pass me by. But not what I want—what you want."
John 11:9-10:
Jesus replied,
"Aren't there twelve hours of daylight?
Those who walk by day don't stumble,
because they see the world bathed in light;
those who go walking by night will stumble
because there is no light in them."
John 9:1-5:As Jesus walked along, he saw someone who had been blind from birth. The disciples asked Jesus, "Rabbi, was it this individual's sin that caused the blindness, or that of the parents?""Neither," answered Jesus,"It wasn't because of anyone's sin--not this person's, nor the parents'.Rather, it was to let God's works shine forth in this person.We must do the deeds of the One who sent me while it is still day--for night is coming,when no one can work.While I am in the worldI am the light of the world."
Exodus 17:4-6:So Moses cried out to the Lord, “What shall I do for this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” The Lord said to Moses, “Go on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you; take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile and go. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.”
Genesis 12:1-3:
YHWH said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people, and the home of your parents, and go to a place I will show you. I will make of you a great people. I will bless you and make your name so great that it will be used in blessings. . . . And all the people on the face of the earth will be blessed through you."
Matthew 4:1-11Then Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit, to be tempted by the Devil. After fasting for forty days and forty nights, Jesus was hungry. Then the tempter approached and said, “If you are the Only Begotten, command these stones to turn into bread.” Jesus replied, “Scripture has it, ‘We live not on bread alone but on every utterance that comes from the mouth of God.
Matthew 11:28-30:
(Jesus said) "Come to me, all you who labor and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon your shoulders and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. Here you will find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
John 21:15:When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
Micah 6:6-8, The Inclusive Version:
“What shall I bring when I come before YHWH, and bow down before God on high?” you ask.“Am I to come before God with burnt offerings? With year-old calves? Will YHWH be placated by thousands of rams or ten thousand rivers of oil? Should I offer my firstborn for my wrongdoings—the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”Listen here, mortal: God has already made abundantly clear what “good” is, and what YHWH needs from you: simply do justice, love kindness, and humbly walk with your God.
Colossians 3:12-14
Because you are God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with heartfelt compassion, with kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with one another; forgive whatever grievances you have against one another--forgive in the same way God has forgiven you. Above all else, put on love, which binds the rest together and makes them perfect.
Matthew 4:12-17:
Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
"Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned."From that time Jesus began to proclaim, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."
Isaiah: 40:28-31:Do you not know? Have you not heard?YHWH is the everlasting God,the Creator of the ends of the earth.This God does not faint or grow weary;with a depth of understanding that is unsearchable.God gives strength to the weary,and empowers the powerless.Young women may grow tired and weary,young men may stumble and fall,but those who wait for YHWHfind a renewed power:they soar on eagles’ wings,they run and don’t get weary,they walk and never tire.
Psalm 72:1-7, The Inclusive Bible: O God, give your anointed one your judgment--and your justice.Teach your chosen one to govern your people rightlyand bring justice to the oppressed,The mountains will bring the people peaceand the hills justice!Your anointed will defend the oppressed among the people,save the children of the poor,and crush the oppressor.The reign of your anointed will endureas long as the sun and moon--throughout all generations.The rule of the chosen one will belike rain coming down on the meadow,like showers watering the earth.Justice will flower through the days, and profound peace,until the moon be no more.
Isaiah 63:7-9, the Inclusive Bible: I will tell you of YHWH's unfailing love,and sing the praises of YHWHfor all that YHWH did for us--the many good things done for the house of Israel,which God did with motherly compasionand many kindnesses.For YHWH said, "Truly these are my people, children who will not be false to me"--and so God became their Liberator.In all their distress, O God, you were distressed,and the angel of your Presence saved them;you redeemed them out of deep love and profound mercy;you lifted them up and carried themfrom time immemorial.
Isaiah 9:2, 6-7 The Inclusive BibleThe people walking in darkness are seeing a brilliant light--upon those who dwell in a land of deep shadows light is shining!For a child is born to us, an heir is given to us,upon whose shoulders dominion will rest.This One shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the Strength of God,Eternal Protector, Champion of Peace.This dominion, and this peace, will grow without end,with David's throne and realm sustained with justice and fairness,now and forever.The zeal of YHWH Omnipotent will accomplish it!
Today, it's a hilarious roundtable of stories from Mark, Jenny, Denna, Shelby, Matt, and Steve. Get to know our staff better with great Christmas memories.
It's Sports Talk Radio that's come to Jesus.
Matthew 1:18-24a, The Inclusive Bible:
This is how the birth of Jesus came about. When Jesus’ mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Joseph, her husband, an upright person unwilling to disgrace her, decided to divorce her quietly. This was Joseph’s intention when suddenly the angel of God appeared in a dream and said, “Joseph, heir to the House of David, don’t be afraid to wed Mary; it is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived this child. She is to have a son, and you are to name him Jesus—‘Salvation’—because he will save the people from their sins.” All this happened to fulfill what God has said through the prophet:
“The virgin will be with childand give birth,and the child will be named Immanuel” —a name that means “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of God had directed.
Today, Mark and Steve talk once again with Neal Christie about a large topic: Christian Nationalism. Is Christian Nationalism an appropriate expression of Christian faith? What's the difference between patriotism and nationalism? How do we celebrate our love for country while also recognizing the Lordship of Christ? Enjoy this great discussion today.
Luke 1:46-50, The Inclusive TranslationMary said: "My soul proclaims your greatness, O God,and my spirit rejoices in you, my Savior.For you have looked with favorupon your lowly servant,and from this day forwardall generations will call me blessed.For you, the Almighty, have done great things for me,and holy is your Name.Your mercy reaches from age to agefor those who fear you."
At this time John the Baptizer appeared in the desert of Judea, proclaiming, "Change your hearts and minds, for the reign of heaven is about to break in upon you!" It was John that the prophet Isaiah described when he said, "A herald's voice cries in the desert: 'Prepare the way of our God, make straight the paths of God!' John was clothed in a garment of camel's hair and word a leather belt around his waist. Grasshoppers and wild honey were his food. At that time, Jerusalem, all Judea and the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him. John baptized them in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.
From Isaiah 2:2-4, The Inclusive Version:
In the last days, the mountain of YHWH's Temple will be established as the most important mountain and raised above all other hills-- all nations will steam toward it. Many people will come and say: "Come, let us climb YHWH's mountain to the Temple of the God of Jacob, that we may be instructed in God's ways and walk in God's paths." Instruction will be given from Zion and the word of YHWH from Jerusalem. God will judge between the nations and render decisions for many countries. They will beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; one nation will not raise the sword against another, and never again will they train for war.
This week's podcast is a roundtable discussion on the most important things connected to Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany: "The Elf," Festivus, silent drives home after late-night services, and of course, the meaning of it all. Pour your tea, throw a log on the fire, and cozy up to a discussion about all things Advent and beyond. Steve and Mark are joined by Jenny and Denna this week.
Psalm 46:1-7:
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns. The nations are in an uproar; the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice; the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.
This week's guest is the President of the United Methodist Church's Council of Bishops, Tom Bickerton. There's hardly a better person out there who can better speak to the realities of the current state of the church, and we're excited to speak to him. We apologize, however: because of the stature of our guest and the immense wealth of knowledge he brings, your two hosts had to 1) go a little "fanboy," 2) refrain from cursing, and 3) attempt, however successfully, to avoid the "inside baseball" syndrome.
Isaiah 65:17-19 - Inclusive Translation.
For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth! The things of the past will not be remembered or come to mind! Be glad and rejoice forever and ever in what I create, because I now create Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight! I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my people; no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it or the cry of distress.
Mark is a delegate to Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference, an event in which the UMC elects bishops who serve across the Southeast. He's been sending short reflections on the events taking place, and weighing in on some of the controversies that affect the future of our church. Join us for a fascinating look into one of the most consequential meetings that takes place in our denomination.
Haggai 2:1b,3-5 The Inclusive Translation:
The word of YHWH came through the prophet Haggai and told him. . . Ask them, Who is there left among you who saw this Temple in its former glory? And how does it look to you now? Doesn't it seem like nothing in comparison? But take courage now, Zerubbabel!--it is YHWH who speaks. Courage, Hight Priest Joshua ben-Jehozadak! Courage, all you people of the country!--it is YHWH who speaks. To work! I am with you—it is YHWH Omnipotent who speaks—as I promised I would when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit remains among you. Don't be afraid!
Yes, it's a typo I've been making for years, but it seems more true today than ever before: the United Methodist Church is becoming "Untied." This week Mark speaks with Rev. Neal Christie, a representative of the Love Your Neighbor Coalition, former staff member of the General Board of Church and Society, and current Conference staff about the latest news and views of our denomination. If you're a "church nerd," you will not want to miss this one. But here's a hint: it's not quite as bad as you might think.
Luke 19:1-10 (Inclusive Translation)
Entering Jericho, Jesus passed through the city. There was a wealthy person there named Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector. Zacchaeus was trying to see who Jesus was, but he couldn’t do so because of the crowd, since he was short. In order to see Jesus, Zacchaeus ran on ahead, then climbed a sycamore tree that was along the route. When Jesus came to the spot, he looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, hurry up and come on down. I’m going to stay at your house today.” Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and welcomed Jesus with delight. When everyone saw this, they began to grumble, “Jesus has gone to a sinner’s house as a guest.” Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to Jesus, “Here and now I give half my belongings to poor people. If I’ve defrauded anyone in the least, I’ll pay them back fourfold.” Jesus said to the tax collector, “Today salvation has come to this house, for this is what it means to be a descendant of Sarah and Abraham. The Promised One has come to search out and save what was lost.”
How many times have you come across ideas that we commonly believe are in the Bible, but actually aren't? How much of our everyday faith is made of extraneous sayings that we claim are biblical, but are in fact contrary to Scripture? It's more common than you'd think.
Today, Mark and Steve bust some common myths about the Bible, and they do it in their usual silly, irreverent, and thought-provoking way.
Psalm 84:1-4 (The Inclusive Bible):
How I love your dwelling place, YHWH Sabaoth! How my soul yearns and pines for your courts, YHWH! My heart and my flesh sing for joy to you, the living God. The sparrow has found its home at last, the swallow a nest for its young— on your altars, YHWH Sabaoth, my Sovereign, my God! Happiness belongs to those who live in your house and can praise you all day long.
Today's interview is with Mike Corcoran, FUMCOR's facilities manager. Mike will speak with Mark about our building's current challenges, increases in building materials prices (and a really great deal he negotiated), and how we all have a part to play in the upkeep of our beautiful facility. Mike also knows a little about Star Trek, so...

Genesis 32:22-28
32:22 The same night he got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
32:23 He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had.
32:24 Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.
32:25 When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him.
32:26 Then he said, "Let me go, for the day is breaking." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go, unless you bless me."
32:27 So he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob."
32:28 Then the man said, "You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed."
Today's guest is Judy Gooch who is working to make a home for families fleeing the war in Ukraine. It's hard to imagine what they've been through to get here, but Judy tells their story and fills us in on how our community has pitched in to help in just about every way possible.
And, this week's podcast is sponsored by Church of Christ Grocery Stores, where nothing is sold that's not mentioned in the New Testament.
Yes, life is different after COVID, even when it feels like we've returned to the way of life we had before. It's hard to overstate the impact the pandemic has had on churches across the world. Rev. Catherine Nance is the Senior Minister of Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville, TN, and is Mark's guest today. Together they will discuss the challenges - and opportunities - that present themselves in today's church.
Religious people can be very polarized on this topic: is it good (or bad) to question basic tenets of your faith? Our guest today has the unlikely name of Steve Martin and is one of the leading podcasters discussing deconstructionism, a movement in faith communities that is upending assumptions about the church, Christianity, and the Bible. But with two Steve Martins on the show, you know it can't be overly serious.
It all began with a conversation in Rev. Bob Cantrell's office and now has grown into an international program that has touched countless lives and has even saved a few! Join Mark as he speaks with Jim Michel about the upcoming mission trip to Panama and mission trips in the past.
Alzheimer's Disease affects nearly everyone in one way or another. Either you are touched by this devastating condition yourself, or someone close to you is.
National Alzheimer's Day is September 21, and to help us understand this disease and other forms of dementia, Anne Leitnaker, Assistant Director of Keystone, speaks to us about its causes and possible cures.
Rev. Rob Schenck was once a national leader in the most aggressive front of the anti-abortion movement. As the movement embraced violence and mingled pro-gun passions with their "pro-life" rhetoric, a long journey of repentance took hold. Rob talks with Mark and Steve about his remarkable life, his changed views, and the cost that comes with publicly changing one's mind.
Do the names Ted Haggard, Bill Hybels, and Jimmy Swaggart mean anything to you? Yes, they are high-flying pastors who became known for the scandals they caused. Why do scandals by pastors keep happening?
This week we're talking with Jake Morrill, former pastor at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church and member of the faculty of the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family. Jake, through his work in counseling and the lens of Bowen Family Systems Theory, will give us some insight into this fascinating... but devastating... problem.
