The Heart Attack Thriver Podcast: Recent Episodes

Brian Simpson

The sharing of stories is often underrated in the healing journey after a heart attack or any near death experience for that matter. I will be using this platform to provide a place where people who have had an “Event of the Heart” can share their stories and continue to heal themselves. I believe we all have medicine on our hearts and that our stories are the medicine that someone out there needs to receive. I will also be talking with medical experts, health care providers, dietitians, as well as holistic practitioners about yoga, meditation and breath-work and how they can all help to prevent stress and anxiety and ultimately Cardiovascular Dis-Ease.

In this episode I pick up where I left off in the last episode after safely getting out of Nicaragua during the attempted Coup and into Honduras. Once I was safely in Honduras I could breath again and let out a huge sigh of relief and was free to continue on my solo journey back in to Mexico and onward to Mexico City to explore a friendship that had become romantic a Mexican Socialite named Claudia Padilla who I had met on my first trip through Mexico Mexico City on my way south to Costa Rica.

In this episode I felt inspired to talk about my other love my 2013 Triumph Tiger 1200 that I took on a solo trip all the way from Toronto to Costa Rica and then back to California. All in all, I visited 9 Countries, 21 states and 6 Provinces!

Oh the stories she would tell if she could talk!

I hope this story inspires you, I hope it motivates to trust your intuition and I hope it inspires you to “Face Your Fear, Learn its Name and Love it out of YOU!!”

Much Love!

In this weeks episode I was in conversation with Dr. Jonathan Fisher who is a Mount Sinai and Harvard trained Cardiologist and author of the just released book “Just One Heart: A Cardiologist’s Guide to Healing, Health, and Happiness”

Grateful Jonathan stuck with me on this as we had several technical issues. I’m feeling humbled and super grateful we were able to make this powerful and much needed conversation happen!!

Jonathan is truly a special human being and from what he shared, unlike any doctor I’ve met or worked with in my near 20 year career in health care!

There were so many nuggets and amazing takeaways from Jonathan during our conversation that quite easily makes this my favourite podcast episode thus far!!

❤️❤️❤️

It really is surreal that today marks four years since I did my first Instagram live interview with Nigel Mullis. Over the past four years I’ve interviewed 111 people which to me is just crazy! It lead to me launch this podcast platform and the reception has been incredible.

I’m super proud and humbled by the reception of this content, and how the sharing of other Heart Thriver stories not only is healing, but is a way normalizing the fear and anxiety that is real after any near death experience.

Thank you to each and every one of you for following along on this journey!

In this episode of The Heart Attack Thriver Podcast I had the honor to speak with Dirk Thompson from Texas. Dirk suffered 4 strokes over 2 days when he was 3 years old which ultimately led to him using the use of his left arm.

Dirk shares is powerful mindset mantra “Innovation is Greater than Limitation” and embodies that mindset every day.

Dirk is incredibly inspiring and thru his hard work and perseverance has figured out how to successfully play what is typically a 2 handed instrument with one hand!

I’d be remiss if I didn’t share here the Gold Nugget Dirk shared at the end of our conversation….”sometimes you have to get to the end of yourself to find yourself!!!”

Pure Gold!!!

In this Episode of The Heart Attack Thriver Podcast, I talk about the book that is in me and how I'm moving from a place of self doubt to a place of a writer who knows he has a powerful story to share and is here to help others who are struggling after a life changing Cardiac Event of the Heart. The passing of Bruce has reminded me how fleeting life is and that I need to continue to live life all out. The book is going to take a long time to write and I am fucking proud of myself that I am in action on it, that I have sought out the guidance of a friend and mentor to help me to write my Memoir to share with the world...to share the Medicine that is on MY HEART!

As always thank you for following along and if I can support you in any way on your journey please reach out and let’s get on a call to talk through what you are going thru as their is no obligation to ever work with me as I simply want to support you in any way I can!

Much Love!

In this episode I talk about Bruce Paterson who was married to a high school friend of mine. Bruce and Karen were avid cyclists and like me Bruce had a passion for playing ice hockey. Sadly, Bruce was taken from us too early when he suffered a massive heart attack while training on his bike in the basement of his home in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada

Bruce’s passing has hit me hard as our stories are similar and Bruce should still be alive.

Cardiovascular Dis-Ease is the #1 Killer of men and women worldwide running away from all other causes of death.

This podcast is a reminder to take your life and your health and well being seriously. Get checked out, get your blood work done, know the signs and symptoms and know your family history!!

Service for Bruce to be held Saturday March 16th in Uxbridge Ontario

https://www.lowandlow.ca/obituary/Bruce-Paterson

To make a donation in Bruce’s memory the family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to an amazing program that supports young and upcoming cyclists the Cycling Canada Campaign - In support of Ontario Cycling's Tony Osborne Fundhttps://cyclingcanada.kindful.com/?campaign=1293191

In this Episode, Chris opens up and shares his journey and how he was guided in so many ways that ultimately led him to the right people and the right location that has allowed him to have an incredible outcome, that quite honestly could of been far worse or even fatal if he hadn’t trusted his intuition.

It’s yet another powerful example of listening to your body, not ignoring symptoms and trusting those that came to help.

I particularly love that Chris is training hard for the upcoming Boston Marathon which will be 499 days after his STEMI Hear Attack.

In 2018 I had decided to relocate to California to explore a new life with my new partner Adrienne whom I had met in Sedona while on my solo motorcycle trip from Canada to Costa Rica. I had brought my bicycles here because I knew from my son Bayley and all the training he and the Canadian National Cycling team did in SoCal that this place was a Mecca for Cycling.

On one of my first rides, I rode up on another rider said hello and then proceeded to keep going. I soon turned right onto a side road and got an intuitive hit! “You need to stop and wait for him”.

When he joined me we started talking and one thing led to another and I shared that I had had a Heart Attack to which he replied “so did I!” I call that the magic. We continued to ride together and before we parted ways we exchanged numbers and have been friends ever since.

Brian has had a challenging journey post Heart Attack and I don’t want to give is amazing and powerful story away!! so be sure to listen to the end

Brian is an amazing photographer too, and one of his amazing photos graces the wall of our office!!

In this episode I do what has become a yearly tradition of taking time for reflection, time to practice gratitude and time to keep saying yes when opportunities present themselves. When you lean in to something difficult or scary and you say yes anyway….that is when the magic happens.

So in 2024 I will continue to say YES, I will continue to work on myself and do the difficult work that still needs to be done. I will continue to work with my therapist and I will continue to be fucking amazing and I will continue to THRIVE!!

Much Love….

On this week’s Episode I am in conversation with Zach Dogar from the UK about the heart attack he suffered in the height of COVID on March 1, 2021. Its yet another amazing example of someone who has taken something very scary, very traumatizing and has “CHOSEN” to use it as a catalyst to change their life, their way of being and use it as their “WHY” moving forward or as I like to refer to as rocket fuel to propel you forward towards your “BEST LIFE, “ instead of using it as an anchor to drag around and hold you back from becoming the best version of yourself and to start living life to its fullest.

In this episode I’m in conversation with Aspen realtor and outdoor enthusiast Michael Latousek who suffered back to back heart attacks 12 days apart in December of 2020. The first event happened on Dec. 9th while out mountain biking with 2 friends near the Utah border. Michael survived thanks to CPR and the quick actions of his friends and the Medivac Team that arrived on scene and airlifted Michael to hospital.

Doctors told Michael he arrived to the hospital with a blockage of the LAD (also known as the Widowmaker) and that they had placed 2 stents to open the blockage.

Then only 12 days after being released from hospital, Michael suffered another Heart Attack while at home with his 2 daughters Lauren, 13, and Taylor, 11, while his wife Denise was out running errands.

Its an incredible story and Michael declares himself the “Luckiest Man Alive” after all he and his family and friends went through.

In this Episode I am in conversation with Serena Lucero IG: @serenablucero from Georgia about the heart attack she suffered on Dec. 12, 2022 at the young age of 47.

Despite what her doctor advised her when she first experienced symptoms, Serena did not go to the hospital.

The next day she sat up in bed and knew something wasn’t right. This time she went to the hospital and doctors suspected she had already suffered 2 heart attacks as her enzyme levels were off the charts.

The next day she had a stent placed and found out she had a 100% blockage of the RCA (Right Coronary Artery) and 2 smaller blockages that were 60%.

Thankfully she has fully recovered and wants to share her story to help raise awareness to cardiovascular dis-ease!

In conversation with Leigh Pechillo IG: @heartleigh about the heart attack she suffered on Mothers Day in 2014.

Leigh had what is known as a Widowmaker which is a 100% blockage of the Left Anterior Descending artery or LAD as its often referred to.

During her heart attack Leigh went in to sudden cardiac arrest and it was the fast actions of her husband who performed CPR on her until paramedics arrived that saved her life.

She was taken by Medivac to hospital where she had 1 stent inserted.

Leigh receive one AED shock at home and the next day, she went into cardiac arrest in the hospital 3 separate times and had to be shocked 13 additional times. #crazy

Thankfully Leigh is now #thriving and is using her experience to raise awareness to Cardiovascular Dis-Ease in women and works with the America Heart Association (AHA) to further her mission.

This week on T.H.A.T I was in conversation with Ian Morgan @ian.morgan about the heart attack he suffered 7 years ago at the age of 46.

Ian is an Ultra Runner who has an extensive family history that included a sister who has had 2 heart attacks.

Ian describes himself as being overweight before his event of the heart and living with a lot of stress that stemmed from a difficult divorce and an earthquake that impacted him financially.

Ian’s memory is vague on exactly what happened but was told his EKG was normal, but his troponin levels were super high. The next day he was sent to a cardiac centre where it was discovered that he had 2 arteries blocked.

To quote Ian “your second life begins when you realize you only have one”.

Ian has completely transformed himself through running and healthy lifestyle choices and having the love and support of his partner Fran @frangibar

I’m super excited to share the replay of my Instagram Live with someone I am ⁣honored to know and call a friend, Toronto Psychiatrist Dr. Micheal Rosenbluth

Dr. Rosenbluth discuss depression and how common it is after a life changing near death event such as a Heart Attack. We also discuss anxiety and how meditation and mindfulness are now part of the recommendations for physicians in the Canadian Mental Healthy Guidelines for patients with depression. ⁣

Having worked in mental health myself for a number of years, this topic is something I am very passionate about, I’m sure you will find my discussion with Dr. Rosenbluth very interesting as well.

In this episode, I talk about Meditation and Mindfulness and how it has changed me for the better.   It has been a long journey to get to where I am today in my Meditation practice and I occasionally slip and fall out of practice which is OK.   I will offer some tips I have learned along the way and hope you find them helpful.   At the end I lead a short guided meditation that helps with stress and anxiety that is focused on a deep belly breathing technique that is often referred to as box breathing or “The Navy Seal” breath.

In this episode, I talk about why I decided to start a Podcast,  the healing power of story telling and how I am using this podcast and my weekly Instagram LIVE series to provide a platform for others to share their stories too.

I talk about how I have made it my mission to raise awareness to the role that STRESS plays in our health and wellness and in Cardiovascular Dis-Ease.

During my travels on the healing road,  I realized that we are stronger together, and that by sharing our stories we can help normalize things, offer hope of a full recovery to those who are just embarking on their own personal journey after their “Event of the Heart”

Cardiovascular Dis-Ease is the #1 killer of men and women worldwide and the reality is that it doesn’t need to be this way because it is preventable.

In this episode I talk about life before my heart attack,  my fitness and overall health  and wellness .   I touch on the importance of knowing your numbers, your family history and knowing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack (there are some important and subtle differences between men and women).

Lastly, I share the deeply personal reason WHY I had my heart attack.  No doctor has or will ever be able to confirm this, and honestly I don’t need anyone to, because I know deep within my heart this is the reason and is my truth.
