It’s episode 80, friends! We’re celebrating with a brand-new segment called “Dread It,” where we dive into wild Reddit wedding posts and give our unfiltered planner-and-DJ take. First up: a spicy thread claiming “you’re getting scammed by wedding DJs.” (Spoiler alert: we have thoughts.) Then we switch gears and chat about something real—how to plan a wedding while also graduating, buying a home, or having a baby. Big life moments are exciting, but doing them all at once? Let’s just say… it’s a lot.

We’ll share some laughs, personal stories, and practical tips to help you keep your sanity, your budget, and your joy intact while juggling it all.

What You’ll Hear

✨ The truth about that “DJ scam” post — and what actually makes a DJ worth it
💡 Real-time chaos: why a good MC is your secret weapon on wedding day
🏡 How to plan your wedding and buy a house without losing sleep
💰 Budget tips to keep wedding funds and home funds from blending into one big “uh oh”
🎓 Couples who planned weddings while graduating (yes, it happens!)
👶 When life events collide—how to breathe, delegate, and enjoy the ride

Quick Tips

💍 Know your deadlines — don’t let vendor deposits collide with mortgage closings
💸 Separate your budgets — wedding fund here, house fund there
👯‍♀️ Delegate — planners, friends, and family are your secret sauce
🫶 Remember: it doesn’t all have to happen at once (seriously!)

Music is important to creating the right atmosphere and flow for your wedding, and when people think of music at a wedding, the two most common choices are a band or a DJ. However, which songs are played is far from the only consideration when making this decision. This week, Dominic goes through all the things you may not have thought to consider when choosing who to trust with your wedding’s music.

We talk more about:

  • The services a DJ is expected to provide that a band might not
  • The differing needs from a venue for a band vs. a DJ
  • What it’s like having both a band AND a DJ
  • And much more!

Understatement of the century: weddings are expensive! So it’s totally understandable if you decide for your budget’s sake to forgo the professional photographer and go with the family friend who said they’d do it for free. But if you do this, there are some things you should know to make sure you still get the wedding you want. In this episode we discuss whether—and how—to make a wedding work when not all of your vendors are professionals.

We talk more about:

  • The experience of having many pros at a wedding versus one or none
  • How to make sure non-professionals know what they’re doing
  • How to handle different social dynamics of a non-professional relationship
  • And much more!

Your wedding is a very important day, but it is just that: one day. And between everything that’s brought together for that one day—a dress you’re probably never going to wear again, flowers that are just going to get thrown out, invitations your guests are going to forget, food that’s going to go waste—it’s enough to get the environmentally conscious couple to stop and ask if there’s a better way. In this episode, we’ll give our tips on how to make your wedding that much more sustainable—but no less magical.

We talk more about:

  • Renting versus buying a dress second-hand
  • How to waste less food, flowers, and invitations

Leading up to and on the day of your wedding, there’s a LOT to keep track of, so it’s no secret that we think hiring a wedding planner is generally a pretty good idea. If someone else can coordinate that chaos for you, there’s going to be so much less on your mind so you can focus on what matters to you most. You’ve heard us talk about this before, but this week we’ve brought on another wedding planner—our friend Meredith Bartel from Plus One Planning, so that she can share her thoughts and experiences about the wedding planning process!

We talk more about:

  • How wedding planners can help you save time, money, and stress
  • What wedding planners do to put out fires the couple never even needs to worry about
  • The skills that Meredith brought with her from education into wedding planning
  • How couples and planners can collaborate to make a shared vision for the wedding shine
  • And so much more!

After a beautiful ceremony, a delicious dinner, and before your guests (and the photographer) start filtering out, there’s one more thing you want to capture. . . your final send-off!

But what should your send-off look like? Is rice too old-fashioned? Are sparklers too dangerous? Do we need the photographer to be here the whole night just for one last picture? Today we talk about all of this and more to make sure you’re ready to be sent off your own way.

We talk more about:

  • What your send-off should look like
  • When (or even if!) you should have your send-off

Want to write your own wedding vows but don’t know where to start? Then this episode is for you!

Tanya Pushkin is The Vow Whisperer. After her second wedding in 2019, she realized how difficult it can be for some people to express how they feel in words. Since then she has helped hundreds of couples write their vows and gain the confidence to share them aloud. As a former actress, she also coaches couples (and officiants!) on public speaking techniques and stage presence, turning what can be an incredibly intimidating moment in your ceremony into something really special.

We talk more about:

  • Her process and how she helps couples with their vows
  • How important officiant prep is for the ceremony and the service she offers specifically for that
  • How to add personality to your vows and ceremony
  • Her top tips for creating the perfect ceremony
  • And so much more!

Fluent in English and French, Tanya Pushkine was born and raised in Brussels, Belgium to an American musical conductor and German painter. She moved to the US in her early twenties to attend The Juilliard School Drama Division. Upon graduation, she was awarded the role of Mozart’s wife in Amadeus on Broadway, which was followed by recurring roles in television, stage and film throughout Europe and the US.

After a successful 10-year career, and the birth of two children, Tanya changed paths and joined the corporate world running Public Relations and Corporate Philanthropy departments for various luxury brands.

Tanya founded The Vow Whisperer following her second wedding in 2019. She currently lives in New York City.

Especially if you are simultaneously in the process of buying your first home, graduating from college, or expecting a baby!

So in this episode we’re talking about the hard stuff and sharing some things we’ve experienced with our couples to help you navigate things like:
