But That's Not Important Right Now: Recent Episodes

Ian Reid

Two guys with a hella lotta emotional baggage wrought by working in media in the Caribbean. One an Art Director scarred by too many late nights, the other a well known radio personality who's slightly screwey. "It's a podcast about admen." "What's that?" "It's a digital audio file made available on the internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new instalments of which can be received by subscribers automatically. BUT THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW!"

What happens when a sausage company had to do damage control? We get to the meat of the issue of Public Relations and how it overlaps the business of Advertising and Marketing. We also touch on race in movies, such as Richard Pryor in the Toy and Dan Aykroyd in "blackface" in Trading Places. I put on my worst Jamaican accent and Jarrod waxes philosophically about the political situation in the country. We're not political, but it does impact on working in the industry. All this and working in Woodbrook in MadAvenue in this week's episode of But That's Not Important Right Now.

In the essay "Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young" by Mary Schmich, immortalised in the the Baz Luhrmann song "Wear Sunscreen" She likens Advice as ". . . a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past From the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts And recycling it for more than it's worth." Well our advice to writers and admen and producers of content is, go easy on the Nostalgia-baiting! Using Nostalgia as a sales technique becomes old very quickly. Do you remember "Green Sands"? Sure, where is it now? All this and more, including 100 years of Crix and 100 years of Angostura Aromatic Bitters in this week's episode of But That's Not Important Right Now. I'm suffering from the Non-Rona flu and Jarrod wasn't feeling like showing his radio face, so this episode we talk a little bit more about working the advertising industry and what happens when you get older. It's a follow on from our last episode as we read some of the comments that you, our loyal listeners have left on YouTube and various other places. In between, my roommate for the evening, my son Devan, chimes in with some sage younger person advice for us old fogeys. It's a short episode, but we have some fun with meds and stories from the world of ads. Thanks for listening and if you like it give it a share and like and all of those lovely things and help support us.

We're back from hiatus and we're discussing stuff: "Heady Days" was published in June of 2022 and is a laundry list of Patrick Johnstone's (former MD of Publicis Caribbean) achievements as an Ad Man. Form his beginnings in the late 1960's to his creation of the agency now known as Publicis, Patrick talks about the history of advertising in T&T. Come listen as we don't really spoil the book (I don't think we actually can) but we do try to discuss the learnings. We are joined by the always incomparable QD Ross. Is 'Heady Days" worth the paper it's printed on? Is it a valuable insight into the ad industry, a seminal work on the development of marketing and communications in the Caribbean? Listen and find out! But That's Not Important Right Now! A Podcast on Advertising.

You can buy a copy of "Heady Days" on Amazon.

Jarrod Butts and Ian Reid, former Advertising employees, talk about construction, building and advertising. The kind of radio ads that could have been great but ended up being poo. The old tag line of a hardware "Know how yuh finishing" starts off the conversation in this episode. The use of celebs to hawk brands, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lebron and the testicles of Devastator. We also discuss why car radios still have the AM band, yes it's very interesting. This and more in a very late edition of But That's Not Important Right Now!

This is the penultimate episode. We will be taking a break till September and will be doing a live show on Wednesday this week. The joke starts with "A Chef, a Bottle of Seasoning and an Airplane walk into a bar. . . " The punchline? Its Tactless. In this episode we're re-joined by our friend Quincy Ross who regaled us with his story of the Caribbean Airlines rebrand way back in the day and the offhand, politically charged comment by the then Prime Minister. But starting the show, is the mysterious case of the "Pork is Life" comment by Chef Jason Peru and all the noise that came with it. Then as if we didn't have enough on our plate NESTLÉ hit us a two for one with their Indian Arrival Day Social Media post, food filled Tabla drums. Oh boy. . . and of course the Johnny Depp trial and all the S**t associated with it. This is going to be a fun and insightful almost philosophical episode! Like share and subscribe! Happy Indian Arrival Day! Duane Boodasingh of TriniTuner.com, the Caribbean's longest and largest online forum, joins us in this episode to talk tech. How a site for car enthusiasts led the way in showing how digital advertising has changed and developed over the years and why we still have a lot to learn. Started in the late 90's Duane's TriniTuner forums has become the go to place for car enthusiasts for over two decades. But it's not just cars, Duane and his team have created a community of people who exchange ideas, discuss issues and unlike Facebook and Twitter show how a little community can do big things without resorting to censorship and an algorithm. The forum dynamic is still alive and well in the age of microblogging and status updates. We're also joined by regular guest Quincy Ross and we talk the agency business in the age of digital. In this episode we talk about how important it is to set boundaries with people, especially clients. If you're working for an ad agency as a freelancer or even individual clients you make it known upfront that you control the narrative, you set the rules. "No. Money Down!" is the mantra. Quincy Ross joins us this week to talk about his challenges with clients who renege on their contracts. We also talk various industry news and then segue into the recent "influencer marketing" controversy and the launch of the new Breeze product at the "swanky Brix Hotel Penthouse." What really IS an "influencer" Quincy's here to help break it down. This is an episode loaded with interesting stories and advice. We tried an experiment and we apologise upfront for the terrible quality. It's even more unappealing than before! But if you can actually catch the recorded live show here: https://www.facebook.com/ReidDesigns/videos/761158335046316 and see our two beautiful craggy faces. Of course we don't have a proper mic cause well, it costs money! But we didn't let that stop us for having a fun time. Its amazing the wonderful people of Starbucks didn't throw us out! 🤣 In this episode we chatted about the Flow account going back to The Agency and what happened the last time it was there. Also we give shoutouts to our listeners and read some comments. We also meander through the life that is working in advertising. So thanks for listening to this horrible podcast! We're working on a better live show. But if you'd like to send us money https://bit.ly/payInow we would be greatly appreciated, daddy needs a new pair of everything, including a Good microphone. There are consequences. Dire ones. We, Jarrod and I bring on our friend from AgencyLand Kimberly to reminisce about campaigns gone by. What does this mean? Well in this Episode we are joined by our illustrious partner in advertising mayhem, Quincy Ross to talk once again about advertising of yesteryear. Yesteryear sounds so far, but it wasn't. Only a few years ago we were looking forward to the latest Absolut Vodka press execution and why its seems less relevant today in the age of digital advertising. We critique Kendall Oil's social media offerings and Google ads. We read some comments from you the fans, also gatekeeping by the the kids when buying cereal and the prizes you got. Anyone remember Zero Heroes?! We do! and Garbage Pail Kids trading cards. Can an ad be an NFT? Who knows? All this and more in this here episode 15 of But That's Not Important Right Now! Hungry?

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

By LAUREN ALLEN

  • 1 pound ground beef (or ½ lb ground Italian sausage and ½ lb ground beef)
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 Tablespoon dried parsley flakes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • crushed red pepper flakes, to taste
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves (optional)
  • spaghetti noodles, for serving

Instructions * Season ground beef with salt and pepper. * In a large skillet, add the beef and chopped onion and brown. Drain excess grease. * Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, parsley, garlic powder, crushed red pepper, worcestershire, and sugar to the skillet. * Stir well to combine and bring to a boil. Add water and stir well. * Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Add chopped basil before serving, if desired.

This is not the recipe used in the movies Godfather, and Goodfellas, but hope you enjoy it. This is all about food sponsorship and food cooking shows and food TikToks in general. The landscape for food styling and presentation of food in the advertising and marketing space has changed dramatically. . . In this episode we talk to our former co-worker at The Agency Ave LeBlanc, who comes on to discuss with me (and then Jarrod who joined us late) the use of expansive additions to "poor people" food like Feta. What's Feta? Feta is a Greek brined curd white cheese made from sheep's milk or from a mixture of sheep and goat's milk. But That’s Not Important Right Now!

Yes we had to talk about it. You may have had your fill of Will, but it's all about the brand and being part of the public conversation. Should you advertise using culturally relevant memes? It's all about tone and your brand DNA. We certainly don't think you should call your new product the "Little Person Pastry" but hey, if it works! We are joined today by our friends Quincy E Ross, Natasha Gill and newcomers Joshua Awai (IG @dlivingroom_) and his bud Nicholas Joseph (IG @639media). If this is your first time here, thanks for joining us. This is the podcast about advertising in the Caribbean. Q D Ross and Anthony Burnley join Jarrod and Ian in a discussion about the changing face of the ad agency business. We're moving into a post-pandemic world after two years using remote work. Suffice to say people would rather not brave the traffic and work from home. Bosses have other ideas. "We shouldn't be talking about time, we should be talking about productivity" says Anthony and he's right of course. The old agency model bills by the hour. We need a new system if we're to survive. One of many talking points in our discussion. This was taped in front a small group of live participants on Facebook. Thanks to all who participated. Please share and subscribe.

If you are one of those people who think that winning awards is the key to success, this is the episode for you. We share our thoughts on how to level up in the advertising game. HINT: Winning awards for the agency isn't it. You should always be open to learning and finding new skills and never stop trying no matter what happens. Damion and Natasha join me, Ian and my cohort in creativity Jarrod, to talk about things like becoming a robot mid podcast taping, why becoming stagnant in your job is a real deal, Star Trek quotes and more. This is the podcast about working in the Ad Agency Business. We have a request for our long time listeners Share this with your colleagues. This week we start out on a trajectory out of our earthly bonds, but then we come back again all knowledgeable and shit about Ad campaigns. Jarrod and I talk about ideas and ideation. Yes they cost money. Yes the idea is best revealed in the execution, but before we can execute something (it's a scary word isn't it) we have to come up with an idea. It's not as easy as it sounds. We have come up with some real zingers of an idea, even talk about Mastercard's Priceless Memes and Holiday Inn's "It won't make you smarter but you'll feel smarter" Campaign (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHCTaUFXpP8) and Geico "I saved a ton of money" ideas. Got Milk tho? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKllfrSvrE0) We also talk about the bad ideas that led to even worse executions (cough cough *Giant Cockroach!") and why sometimes it's just best to leave the client to torpedo their own campaigns by themselves.  . . Remember Angostura XS? Yeah no one does. But That's Not Important Right Now! A podcast on Advertising and Marketing. Its fun, come listen and leave us a comment and subscribe. Thanks for listening!

Quincy Ross and Anthony Burnley, communicators and salt of the Earth Carnival enthusiasts come on our show to school us on what Carnival in T&T is and what it CANNOT be. It’s all about CONfidence. The CONviction of the sale, CONstantly pushing the envelope of creativity. We could go on, but we don’t. We talk to Asma Ali Creative Director at Ogilvy Caribbean about the recent spate of shows and documentaries about con artists. We discuss the ability of advertisers to “con” us into buying stuff we sometimes don’t need. We talk 'bout working in the agency which in the case of MadBird is in itself a con. This podcast is about advertising. You really need to have a thick skin to work in advertising. A friend of mine said "My dream was to work in The Agency" and I said "Sigh. . . mine too" Sadly dreams sometimes get destroyed on the harsh rocks of reality. After 20 years working in advertising Jarrod and me, Ian, lay down the stories that make up this Mad, Mad World of Caribbean Advertising. This episode is about radio ads that are terribly produced. . . we're watching you "Price vs Taste" spot! and attention to detail when doing TV commercials. With social media even the slightest slip up can spell a certain amount of disaster. Red vs Green. Did I mention I am doing NFT's now? check it out here: https://opensea.io/ReidDesigns so head over and buy some art. Thank you for listening and subscribing. We always welcome suggestions and comments. So hit us up on Twitter @reiddesigns and @jarrodbutts. Drop me an email ian@reiddesigns.pro. Share the wealth and tell your industry friends. What happens when The Agency becomes Shocked Awed and Dismayed? We have a new Acronym! Don't get SAD. Get restitution! what's that? Well it's demanding pay for services rendered, But That's Not Important Right Now. Jarrod and Ian talk to eminent photographer and good friend Antony Scully about working for The Agencies and on being a photographer in this new age of technology. We also talk about Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche. . . no not him. The one with the niches. But That's Not Important Right Now, a podcast about the craziness that occurs in the ad industry in the Caribbean. We thank you for listening. Its Divail. Or at least it was when we recorded this. So we took a deep dive into the marketing of the season. The stories behind some of the work Ian did on KLIM and the "other" milk brand. How contrast works (you can only get light from darkness) and the evolution of that Big Red Dressed Fat Man. What this? What's This? to paraphrase Jack. This is Episode 12! Join Ian and Jarrod, two guys who used to work in an ad agency telling our stories and having fun doing it. But That's Not Important Right Now! Joining us this week is Tracy J Hutchings again, to proclaim what a creative does and what an Ad Agency is for. We talk about cigarette advertising back in the day and how the approach to advertising is fighting an uphill battle against the algorithm and science. A creative is there to add that little secret sauce to a marketing campaign, and sometimes the data can only tell you so much. You need an Agency or Creative like us to help guide you and provide that organic human touch. In this episode we also shout out our friend Jamilla Bannister and how she had to deal with a locked business Instagram account and why your brand and product needs to be unique. If it not unique it can easily be stolen by the competition. You should never be afraid of your competition, but you need to learn from them and grow. Again thanks for listening and keep sharing and subscribing. :) We love you all and if you're new here welcome. But That's Not Important Right Now!

Our story begins inside the dark denizens of what those would call a hub of creativity. Those who work there are expected to be adequately compensated. But take the recesses of a building in the dead of night, allied with the memories of the people who work there, and their collective inner vision becomes mercilessly sharp. . . their vivid fantasies meet with cold reality. And once joined, there is no escape. . .

But That's Not Important Right Now! Episode 10 of Season 2! It's our Halloween Episode! This round we bring on Damion "Night Shift"  St Bernard, brand dev, strategic thinker and creative guru. There is a reason we call him "Night Shift". We won't spoil it here. But we have three entertaining stories from the cubicle pens of Advertising Agency reality. Have a seat, roast some marshmallows. . . and let us regale you with tales of terror from beyond the Agency grave!

What's in a name? Well Jarrod and I seek to find out. Marketing and Advertising can be a confusing business and none other than Trinidad James proves that right. We find out that Hibiscus is NOT a plant to make juice. Lolita was a snack and we can turn something so innocent to something so wrong. The Biscuit from almost a different reality call "Lik Lik Toti" but if you read that with a giggle, you aren't the target market. You're not even in the same country! What country? Ahaha! Listen to find out! Join us for yet another round with the crazy stories of the day in the world of advertising. Of course thanks for listening and please share and subscribe. Mr Timmy Mora, joins us today to talk about his vast knowledge about video production in T&T. He is the owner of the YouTube channel "Visual Art and Production" and the company that it belongs. Timmy's stories are both heartbreaking and funny. Experience his forays into video editing on 2 inch tape at the one and only TV station on the island, in the 70's. His story of the hyped up show of Chandelier's new song and why no one actually saw it. The despair at seeing thousands of hours of footage being thrown away and his attempts now to preserve our video heritage. Jarrod and I also talk about us being of the TTT/Sesame Street generation. But That's Not Important Right Now. It's been a great run! Thanks to all who listened but this sadly is the last episode of this season. HA! Caught you. We'll be taking a short break and learning from our mistakes and coming back with your suggestions in September '21. This episode we never thought we'd reach. We set out to do a podcast and we did it consistently for 10 weeks! TEN WEEKS! That's like what? 6 months in dog years? Anyway we went live on Facebook and got a ton of guests joining us to talk about the latest ad dropped by Carib Brewery for Mackeson Stout. We talk to Anthony Burnley formerly of Ogively Caribbean to discuss the ad. We also had a special surprise guest of our dear friend Francisca Hector who gave us a little view of working in media. We were joined as well by our past guest Tracey J Hutchings. It was truly a good time that was had by all. But we must say goodbye.

"Parting is such sweet sorrow," hmm, Captain? "Have we not heard the chimes at midnight?"

See you in a few weeks. In the meantime please do listen to all the episodes and leave us a comment. Follow us on Twitter. @jarrodbutts and @reiddesigns. Thank you for listening.

This week we thank the Universe and someone up there for giving Jarrod the presence of mind to use the heimlich maneuver on himself while having a choking episode. Why choking isn't the number one cause of death while home alone, and accidents at the agency though few were always a reality. We discuss the reason Ian is in Facebook jail and what that means for having a digital business. Ian discusses the viral campaigns that he developed and worked on over the years and Jarrod weighs in on why he's not on TikTok. Also what is CBD? Well is a herb you take to calm the f**k down, maybe we should get some. BUT THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW!

Comments are always welcome. Please find Ian on Instagram @ReidDesigns and Twitter @ReidDesigns also Jarrod on Twitter @JarrodButts (he will follow you back). Please leave us a rating and a review. We'll read it out on air. Thanks to all who have followed and subscribed. Thank you.

In this Episode Jarrod and I talk about getting started in an international ad agency and what the employers' expectations are (that you can't be a dick but they can be if they want to). Some advice about being interviewed for an agency job, and most of all your rights. Your right to know when you are being spied and monitored. Yes there are agencies out there that monitor you via camera and microphone! If you work for one, then be clear on what it's being used for (pretty sure its illegal!) What's that? Its contrary to or forbidden by law, especially criminal law. BUT THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW!

Also we ask our guest Jason Dookeran to tell us a bit about his job as a professional online freelance writer and what you should do and not do when making your side hustle your main hustle. Also why long form copy on a landing page converts more sales than quick short form social media posts. Oh and his Great Grandfather came from India 'cause he was vex about not being able to eat pork. What's that? India man! The continent! The cradle of civilisation man! No? Where we FINALLY got a guest star! Did we mention how much we loathe Zoom? In this episode we talk about what is "advertising" What is it? "Its truth well told, but that's not important right now!" and people selling old mattress on Facebook. We also delve into the radio spot that tried to sell us a fridge but failed and the rise of Social Media to change the game. We welcome comments and suggestions. Please do remember that we're all doing this from our homes because of the "unspecified virus of unknown origins" so if you hear the dogs bark and the cock crow that's nuya business.

It's Deluded or fake awareness or virtue signalling, BUT THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW. . .
