Good, but not quite good enough. That was the story for the Orlando Magic Friday night in Brooklyn. Despite a 41 point first quarter that saw the magic hold the Nets to just 25 first quarter points, Orlando posted just 74 points the rest of the way in a vexing 115-113 loss Friday night.

On Friday night the Magic began the front-end of a back-to-back against Toronto’s Dinosaur’s and after a hard-fought game that saw all five members of the Magic starting five post double figures, but despite a scoring drought by the Raptors over the game’s final two minutes and four seconds was unfortunately just too much to overcome, as the Magic fell 110-109 Friday night in Toronto. For the Raps, the win meant the club won back-to-back games for the first time this season
Trailing by as many as twelve with 2:04 seconds remaining after Fred VanVleet drilled a three-pointer, marking one of his 16 points in the game’s final frame, and the Magic responded with an 11-0 run to close the game. Jalen Suggs added six points over the game’s final 2 minutes to help close the gap and fellow rookie lottery pick Franz Wagner added a late three to close the game to within one, but with .2 seconds left on the clock a driving jump shot by Cole Anthony refused to fall and with it the Magic fell to just 1-5 on the young NBA season, and 1-3 away from their home gym.
For Suggs, Friday night marked his best output of the season. After slugging through their first five games, Suggs connected on 4 of his 8 three-pointers, en route to a 21 point game. Not to be outdone, 2nd-year man Cole Anthony led all Magic scorers, as the North Carolina product poured in 24. Anthony is averaging 17 points per game so far this season.
For the Magic, a theme early on this season has been their inability to play four quarters. That was not the case Friday night as for much of the evening they exchanged blows with Toronto’s roster.
For the Raps, rookie Scottie Barnes was sensational. The Florida State product led all Dinos with 21 points, including shooting 9-14 from the floor, and had one of the game’s more impressive plays, needing just three dribbles to go coast to coast against the Magic.
For Orlando, Friday marked a missed opportunity, but the one great thing about living in the NBA is there is always another opportunity right around the bend. Up next, a Saturday night tilt against Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons, a squad that is still in search of their first win of the campaign. Game time is set for 7 pm

On Wednesday night the Magic returned home after a two-game road swing that took them through New York City for a win against the Knicks, and a trip to South Beach where they got reacquainted with Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat.
The hope was, returning home, to an arena, they know so well, would be the perfect remedy for a campaign that’s slowly getting away from them...It wasn’t, as the Charlotte Hornets ran roughshod over the Magic 120-111 Wednesday night.
Mikal Bridges scored 31, Gordon Heyward added 24, five different charlotte players posted double figures with the lower-water man being young sensation Lemelo Ball. The difference in this one, the Magic were simply outmanned, out-hustled and outrebounding, losing the battle of the board 40-33.

Call it a get right game, a gimme, or simply the back-end of a back-to-back, whatever term of the phrase you want to use wouldn’t do it justice. On Saturday night the Magic closed out their opening month with a frustrating, 110-103 loss to the previously winless Detroit Pistons.
A back-and-forth game for the first two quarters, combined with Orlando playing less than 24 hours after making, saw a tired Magic team slip late against the Pistons. Tied at 70-70 with just 3:10 left to go in the third, Detroit reeled off a 12-0 run, punctuated by a kelly Olynyk driving dunk. The Magic would never really challenge from there.
For the Magic, Franz Wagner was the high-water man, as the rookie out of Michigan poured in 19pts and three rebounds and connected on 3 of his 6 three-pointers, meanwhile, his brother Moritz added 13 off the bench as the two combined for 32 points on the evening.
For the Magic, a team playing on the back-end of back-to-back, tired legs showed late, as the club was held to just 42% from the field and a club that has played decent defense in the opening frames, allowed the Pistons to shoot 75% from 3 and 52% from the floor over the game’s final 12 minutes.
For Detroit, Saturday marked the beginning of an era. After not participating in the NBA preseason, and missing his club’s first four games of the season due to an injury. But after practicing with Detroit’s G-League team the day before, Cunningham made his debut on Saturday playing in 19 minutes for a Detroit team that desperately needed a lift.
But while Cunningham was the headliner, it was actually NBA veteran Jerami Grant that made the most noise. The long-time pesky veteran notched 22 points, added five assists, and proved to be the difference-maker late in the game. Meanwhile, a balanced scoring attack that saw seven different Pistons contribute double figures, with every member that saw game action contributing to the final score, with the bench adding 56 pts, led by Kelly Olynk’s 18.
For the Magic, they’ll finish off this three-game NBA road trip with their only visit this season to the Timberwolves. Game time is set for 8 pm ET.

Orlando went 21-51 overall and 13-29 in Eastern Conference games a season ago. The Magic averaged 104 points per game while shooting 42.9% from the field and 34.3% from 3-point distance last season.
New York finished 41-30 overall and 25-17 in Eastern Conference action during the 2020-21 season. The Knicks averaged 107.1 points per game last season, 43.9 in the paint, 15 off of turnovers and 8.9 on fast breaks.
