While women like Lucretia Mott and Susan B. Anthony were credited with sparking the U.S. suffrage movement at Seneca Falls, that is indeed a myth. For one thing, Anthony wasn’t even present at the convention. And furthermore, she and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, another white woman heralded for her suffrage efforts, actively honed our collective history to make themselves seem like the leaders of the movement with speeches like the “History of Women’s Suffrage.” Today we would call that speech what it really was: a power play with talking points for frontline protesters.

The American Dream for many became the American Nightmare. Growing up many of us searched for that Norman Rockwell moment. For many of us it never happened. And for all too many, they were never even depicted in that Norman Rockwell image. The 1950’s are romanticized as a time when one paycheck paid for the house, family and white picket fence. What is left out of the equation is the formula only worked if you were a white straight male. Marginalized people stayed hidden or under the radar. Things started to change in the 1960’s. Culminating in 1969, a year of change.

Today, we honor Alan Turing, who was born in 1912 in the United Kingdom and changed the 20th century on several levels. He is most known for cracking the Nazi Enigma code in WWII, hastening the end of the war. He is also called the father of computer science. He was also a gay man living at a time when being gay was severely punished. Educated at Princeton University and King's College at Cambridge, he most likely saved 20 million lives yet sadly lost his life to 'suicide' after being chemically castrated.

Throughout the 20th Century, the Federal Government, usually the Federal Department of Narcotics or the FBI, have harassed many men and women of color, under the guise of being subversive. This was also seen notably during the McCarthy Hearings on Communism during the 1950’s. Today we’ll look at three different women that our federal government looked at with suspicion, distrust and even considered them seditionists. Along with this we will look at the role of white privilege and specifically the lack of any privilege among our 3 women today. White privilege has power, whether intentional or not.
