Rock and Roll High School is an interview series that spotlights some of the most important figures in the history of contemporary music. Interviews by Pete Ganbarg, President of A&R at Atlantic Records.
About Pete Ganbarg:
Pete Ganbarg is President of A&R for Atlantic Records as well as President of ATCO Records, a division of Atlantic. He joined the Atlantic Records Group as Executive Vice President of A&R in late 2008.
A 30+ year A&R veteran, Pete has also held senior A&R positions at Arista, Epic and SBK/EMI. As a publisher, Pete operates Songs With A Pure Tone and Margetts Road Music, joint ventures currently in partnership with Warner Chappell Music. Its writers have achieved multiple gold and platinum certifications over the past several years.
At Atlantic, among the artists and projects that Pete has signed and/or A&R’d are Grammy Award winning artists twenty one pilots, Halestorm and Jason Mraz; platinum and multi-platinum artists Christina Perri, Melanie Martinez, Skillet, Brett Eldredge, Matchbox Twenty & Rob Thomas, Theory Of A Deadman and Icona Pop; as well as the Original Broadway Cast Recordings of “Hamilton,” “Mean Girls,” “Jagged Little Pill,” “Dear Evan Hansen” and the Multi-Platinum Billboard #1 soundtrack album “The Greatest Showman,” the latter two of which he also co-produced.
Pete has received two Grammy Awards: the first in 2017 for his role as producer on the Original Broadway Cast Recording of “Dear Evan Hansen” and more recently, in 2021, for his role as producer on the Original Broadway Cast Recording of “Jagged Little Pill.”
Ganbarg began his A&R career in 1989 at SBK Records. In 1997, he joined Clive Davis at Arista Records, where, as Senior Director of A&R, he conceived and A&R’d Santana’s 30x platinum worldwide, nine-time Grammy-winning album, “Supernatural.”
This week, for our Season 2 finale, we are joined by award-winning singer, songwriter, musician, producer, innovator and Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart. Newly inducted into both the Songwriters and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame, Dave talks about how he learned to play guitar while recovering from a soccer injury as a child, living and working with Annie Lennox at the start of their career, and the accidental creation of the opening for their hit “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This).” Dave also shares the stories about creating and recording the iconic “Sisters Are Doin It For Themselves” with Aretha Franklin, co-writing and co-producing Tom Petty’s “Don’t Come Around Here No More,” his long-time friendships with Mick Jagger and Jimmy Iovine and more.

GRAMMY-Award winning producer, manager, and recording artist Peter Asher joins this week to share stories from his remarkable 50+ year career in music. Starting out as half of the duo Peter & Gordon and armed with a new song from his sister’s boyfriend Paul McCartney, “A World Without Love” became a worldwide #1 hit before Peter turned 21. Later as the head of A&R at The Beatles’ label Apple Records, Peter’s first signing was James Taylor who he later produced and managed. Peter would also go on to produce and manage Linda Ronstadt, win 3 Grammy Awards (including twice for Producer of the Year) and in 2015 was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the British music industry.

One of the founding members of the group that bears his name, Robert “Kool” Bell helped form Kool & The Gang in 1964 with his brother Khalis, and friends Dennis "D.T." Thomas, Robert "Spike" Mickens, Charles Smith, George Brown, and Ricky West. With hits like “Celebration,” “Summer Madness” “Ladies’ Night,” and “Jungle Boogie,” Kool & The Gang earned 25 Top Ten R&B hits and nine Top Ten Pop hits, in addition to selling more than 70M albums worldwide. Kool & the Gang’s legacy endures, with their works being sampled by A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, N.W.A., Anderson .Paak, Wu-Tang Clan, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, The Notorious B.I.G., Queen Latifah, and many more. And in 2015, their No. 1 mega-hit “Celebration” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The Zombies were part of the “British invasion” movement of the 1960s and enjoyed some major success for a short period before they broke up after only a few years. But the band’s acclaimed 1968 album Odessey and Oracle is considered to be one of the greatest albums ever recorded and hits like “She’s Not There,” Tell Her No,” and “Time of the Season” remain all time classics. Rod formed a new band called Argent, which hit big in 1972 with “Hold Your Head Up.” Colin released three solo albums, co-produced by Rod, in the early 1970s.
Around 2000, Colin and Rod resurrected The Zombies, ultimately reuniting with the remaining original band members. Their sixth studio album, 2015’s Still Got That Hunger, revived public interest in the band and even led to Odessey and Oracle re-entering the Billboard 100 – nearly 50 years after the album’s release. In 2017, The Zombies went on an Odessey and Oracle tour, performing for a multi-generational fanbase, and in 2019, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Tony Visconti is a 3-time Grammy winner and one of the most acclaimed producers in the history of Rock & Roll. Among his seminal productions are "Get It On (Bang A Gong)," from one of 10 albums he produced for T. One of Atlantic Records’ most iconic artists, Graham Nash started his career by co-founding the English pop/rock group The Hollies. In the late 60's, he partnered with David Crosby and Stephen Stills to form Crosby, Stills & Nash, which later also included Neil Young. The recordings released by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young remain some of the best-loved of all time, including songs written solely by Graham: "Our House," "Teach Your Children," "Just A Song Before I Go," and "Wasted On The Way." Graham is also an internationally renowned photographer and digital imaging pioneer. He is a two-time inductee of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall Of Fame. This episode was recorded in front of a live audience at Atlantic Records in 2018.

Kathy Valentine has been a working musician and songwriter for over 40 years, ever since she started her first band at age 16 in her hometown of Austin, Texas. After moving to Los Angeles, Kathy joined a band that would go on to make music history: The Go-Go’s. In the group, Kathy wrote or co-wrote some of the bands most renowned tunes, including the hits “Vacation” and “Head Over Heels.” The music of Kathy and The Go-Go’s has inspired a generation of musicians and continues to be part of the cultural fabric of our times. In 2018, The Go-Go’s music was featured as the soundtrack for the Broadway jukebox musical Head Over Heels, and in 2020, Allison Ellwood’s documentary, The Go-Go’s, explored the band’s significance, encouraging the members to reunite and record their first song together in 19 years, “Club Zero.” 2020 also marked the release of Kathy’s memoir, “All I Ever Wanted.” In October of 2021, The Go-Go's will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
