A shadow is a dark (real image) area where light from a light source is blocked by an opaque object. It occupies all of the three-dimensional volumes behind an object with light in front of it. The cross-section of a shadow is a two-dimensional silhouette or a reverse projection of the object blocking the light.

Light is a kind of energy
The light that we see is simply one part of the energy that the Sun makes that our eyes can detect. When light travels between two places (from the Sun to the Earth or from a flashlight to the sidewalk in front of you on a dark night), energy makes a journey between those two points.
