In this somewhat obscure but important story, we find a foundational and instructive passage on how God's people should interact with others. God desires for his people to live at peace, as best as they can, with all. We should pursue peace, restore peace, and promote ongoing peace all to the glory of God.
We see several threats to the covenant through the story of Abraham. Here in chapter 20 we find another, similar threat. Abraham decides again to pass his wife off as his sister to a foreign king. Instead of trusting God's provision, he operates out of fear and takes things into his own hands. This passage teaches us that the will of God is not frustrated by the schemes of men.
There is a call from Genesis 19, to God's people throughout history, to not love the world, for it is passing away. In and through this charge we come to see the depths of sin are great, the allure of sin is powerful, and the effects of sin are real. Christ's bride must put of sin and set her mind of heavenly things.
God is a God of justice and we know this by his word and his actions. He is just, right, and good in all that his sovereign hand does. As his people, we are to know his justice and righteousness and champion them in this world.
God redeems a people for himself, a people he desires to fellowship with, by the impossible. Is anything too hard for God? The answer according to the text is emphatically no! Only when it is humanly impossible will Isaac come onto the scene. Then and only then can we know that the covenant promise did not come about by human effort but was of God.
In a passage where God makes it clear who the covenant is between, what the covenant is about, and how the covenant will work, we are reminded of our need for faith and repentance.
In this unique part of Abram's story, we come to know that God sees and hears us in our affliction. There are consequences for not submitting to God's ways and there is waiting when submitting to God's ways.
Amid fear, the Lord guarantees his promises will be fulfilled. Although fear is something we all face, this passage reminds us that faith exceeds fear, God's word opposes fear, and God's promises triumph over fear.
The theme "the battle belongs to the Lord" serves to remind God's people that he is sovereign and they must trust him. In the spiritual war we find ourselves in as the church, the text reminds us to flee from sin, champion righteousness in the land, and give God the glory in victory.
Jesus uses a simple illustration of a fig tree to relate to our Christian walk. In your daily Christian walk, are you just showing off or do you produce fruit that blesses others?
Amid strife and uncertainty, God establishes those who put their faith in him. As we consider Abram and his nephew Lot in Genesis 13, we see the difference between walking by faith and walking by sight. We are also reminded of the blessing of the promise that is given to all sons and daughters of Abram by faith.
The covenant promises of God are central to the grand narrative of redemption. As the mystery of the covenants is revealed more and more, we begin to understand God's relation with his covenant people more and more as well. The call upon God's covenant people is a call to trust and obey.
Worship is the primary way in which we are to point our children to Christ. If this is true, we must think well about how we worship as families in the home and in the church. Let's consider the importance of family worship and the implications it has for the church.
At the end of Paul's second letter to the church in Thessalonica, he looks to encourage them with a reminder that the Lord is faithful to establish and guard his people.
Humans are fascinated with the idea of impending doom. Whether it be a zombie apocalypse or some sort of foreign creature, the thought of how things might come to an end draws our attention. For the believer, we do not have to question what the end will hold. Although we do not know the time or season, we know it is coming in the sovereign will of God. Our hope is in the fact that when the end comes, and it will come, those who love the truth will be saved. Join us as we consider the reality of the man of lawlessness and how this impacts our lives today as believers.
God's justice gives hope to the church. While the idea of judgement tends to be negative, the judgement of God proves to be something positive for the church. The justness of God's justice is proven by persecution, the reward of God's justice is universal, and the coming of God's justice encourages faithfulness.
Paul ends his first letter to the church in Thessalonica with a charge and a blessing. He charges them to support their pastors, show patience to people, and stand firm through suffering. They are to do this through the lens of the truth that God will surely bring to completion what he has begun in his people. Christ will grow his church more and more.
From creation to restoration, God's purposefulness over all of life, creation, and time brings comfort to the believer, especially when it comes to the end. There is comfort for the believer to find in the certain coming of Christ. As we wait, Paul tells us to keep awake, be sober, and to encourage and build up one another.
The goal of the Christian life is to look more and more like Jesus with a view of His certain return. In this sermon we will look at Paul's charge for the church in Thessalonica to grow in holiness and love with a view of Christ return.
There are many relationships and unique bonds that we share in this life but the joyous bond of Christian fellowship far surpasses all other worldly bonds. We share in a Christ centered affection, longing to grow together, and suffering.
God is sovereign over the nations. This truth is crucial to our understanding of God, who He is, and how He operates in relation to image bearers. He is the one true God and will accomplish His will among the nations. The nations are crucial to the story of redemption and we as the church are tasked with bringing God's kingdom among the nations. May we be people who pray, give, and go for the glory of God among the nations.
God works in and through His covenant promises to bring about the redemption and restoration of a broken world. Every aspect of our existence is according to God's grace which is revealed by His covenants with fallen man. This truth is crucial to how we understand the entire story of the Bible and to how we live in every area of our lives.
Is it possible to live for Christ in wicked days? Should Christians even consider living differently from the world? In this portion of the flood narrative we will see the even in seasons of God's judgement, God's servant lives a life of worship and obedience to God. Not only is it possible to live for God in wicked days, it is expected of the people of God.
In our passage we learn where sin increases, God's grace abounds all the more. We see the wickedness of men, God's brokenness over sin, and His justice that is only pardoned by His grace. Do you know His grace.
In our text we see that God's plan of blessing for humanity, though frustrated by the fall, will be restored through the seed of the woman. We see the glorious goal of the genealogy of Christ, the coming of death, and a call to faith in Christ as we long to walk with God as His people in every moment of our lives.
In Genesis 4 we see a desire among some to honor the Lord in the midst of a jealous and prideful world. We are reminded to have a right attitude in our worship, to live in faith, to love our brother, to come to Christ, and to preserve a knowledge of the Lord.
Join us as we consider part 2 of the fall narrative and how the fall impacts our relationship with God, our relationships with each other, and our understanding of the mercy and justice of God.
In part one of the fall narrative we learn that rejecting the goodness of God, displayed at creation, leads to corruption. We are reminded to be good students of the Word, joyfully obey our Lord, and live in holiness.
In the second part of the creation narrative we see the goodness of God in the creation of man and woman. He is good in His purposes, His expectations, and His provision for them. We are reminded to submit to His ways alone in worship and obedience to the praise of His glory.
In Genesis 1:1-2:3 we see that there is one true living God who is at work in and through His creation and created everything according to His perfect wisdom and power. Consider with us how this impacts the way we study the Bible, walk through seasons of sorrow, and live lives of worship and obedience.
Join us as we begin a series through the book of Genesis. In this sermon we will consider why we study Genesis, how we study Genesis, and learn about a sovereign God who saves people in time and space.
In Acts 10 we see that God miraculously prepares the hearts of people from every nation to hear and believe the Gospel. This truth propels us to delight in and have an urgency in evangelism; delight in obedience to Christ and participating in what He is doing to draw people to Himself and urgency for those who are dying without Christ.
The story of Christmas is a story of providence; God intervening on behalf of sinful men by providing His only son as the perfect sacrifice. Join us as we look at the story of Christmas through the lens of a sovereign King who works all things together for the good of His people and His glory.
In Luke 1:57-66 we see that the work of God, in the lives of his people, is transformative. Transformation is certain for those who are in Christ. Listen as we consider the miraculous birth of John the Baptist and see how this story of transformation relates to our lives today.
This week we consider how in and through this fallen world, God is faithful. His faithfulness transcends all of life's circumstances, impacts how we live as His people, and sets our hope in heaven. The writer of Psalm 130 cries out from the depths of despair to a God who is merciful and faithful.
In Psalm 102, we are reminded of the fleeting nature of man and the eternal nature of God. When our thoughts and affections linger on the flesh, we will find ourselves overwhelmed by the anxieties of the world. When we shift our attention to God Himself, we find hope. Where do your thoughts and affections rest? On the created or the creator?
In Psalm 51 we see a great example of zeal for righteousness in the life of David, a zeal we all should strive for in every aspect of the Christian life. We are also reminded of our sin and our inability to create a clean heart in and of ourselves. There is a better David, a better sacrifice we must look to in order to be made clean. Who is that better David? It is Christ.
Listen as Pastor Nathan Clardy shares from Psalm 38. He shares God's view of sin and judgement, David's recognition of his sin and repentance, and the world's embracing of unrighteousness. When we talk about sin and the world's depravity, we are then able to point others to Jesus.
Listen as Pastor Nathan Clardy shares from Psalm 32. He explains how genuine confession leads to being blessed. Blessed being defined as happiness sustained in God's Promises, not the world's standards.
Listen as Pastor Nathan Clardy shares how we are broken and need deliverance. Thankfully, we know God heals, delivers, hears, and answers our prayers. However, we need to be honest and bold, submit to God, and confess our sins to God daily through our prayers.
Listen and Pastor Nathan Clardy shares from Ephesians 2. He explains how Unity starts when we remember who we were and then remember whose we are as believers. Only through the Gospel will we be united as the church.
