In this episode, Joyce Odidison speaks with keynote speaker, coach, and Choice Management® expert Paula Houlihan about the hidden pressure carried by high achievers and the choices that can either strengthen or quietly deplete resilience.
After years of succeeding in a demanding corporate career, including negotiating multimillion-dollar litigation cases as a senior claims specialist, Paula received a life-changing medical diagnosis that forced her to reconsider the true cost of success.
Today, she helps high performers, leaders, and organizations take the stress out of success without lowering their standards or losing their ambition.
Paula and Joyce explore how automatic decision-making contributes to stress, burnout, declining energy, and unhealthy workplace patterns. They also discuss how leaders can become more intentional about their choices, respond to change with greater confidence, and create cultures where productivity and well-being can thrive together.
In this conversation, you will discover:
• Why high performers often ignore the earliest signs of resilience depletion
• How everyday choices affect stress, energy, performance, and relationships
• Why success and well-being should not be competing priorities
• How Paula’s Choice Management® model supports clearer decisions
• What leaders can do to build healthier, more resilient workplace cultures
This episode is for HR leaders, executives, managers, team leaders, and high-performing professionals who want to achieve meaningful results without allowing chronic stress to become the price of success.

Master the art of calm in chaos. JOHN ANTRIM, a former hostage negotiator turned communication coach, shares how listening skills, like paraphrasing and body language, can transform tense moments into opportunities for connection and resolution. Whether in high-stakes negotiations or everyday conflicts, these tools are essential for leaders, parents, and professionals battling stress, impatience, and miscommunication.

In a world of increasing loneliness, polarization, and social isolation, where does work fit in? Can our jobs be part of the solution? My guest today, Todd Levinson, believes the answer is a resounding yes.
Todd is the Co-founder of MATR & Co-host of the Healing Race podcast, a platform designed to build strong, meaningful relationships. Drawing from his personal family history with the Holocaust, he shares why he is so passionate about creating connection and fighting the "dehumanization" that can happen in society and our workplaces. We discuss how technology like AI and social media can create disconnection and why building genuine human bonds is the key to our well-being and resilience.
This is a conversation for anyone who believes work can and should be more human.
In this episode, you will learn:
► The single strongest predictor of long-term health and happiness (it's not what you think).
► How building relationships is the antidote to scapegoating and "us vs. them" thinking.
► Why retreats provide a temporary high, but consistent daily practice creates real change.
✅ How to move from surface-level connectivity to deep, resilient connection.

As you ascend in your career, finding a trusted, objective confidant becomes nearly impossible. You're constantly navigating political landscapes, managing difficult peers, and making critical decisions in a state of executive function all day long, and it's leading to burnout.
My guest, Corinne Gavlinski, has been in your shoes. As a former executive turned private talk partner for senior leaders, she understands this lonely reality. In this episode, she provides a strategic guide for navigating the C-suite. We discuss perspective-building, managing your team when you're stretched thin, and the crucial importance of having a thinking partner.
This is an essential conversation for any senior leader who feels the weight of their role and is looking for practical strategies to lead with resilience.
This strategic conversation covers:
► How to gain perspective when you're too "in it" and emotional.
► The danger of homogenizing your team members when you're stressed.
► Why your recovery from a mistake is more important than the mistake itself.
► The single most important job of a leader (Hint: It's not just about hitting targets).

Effective leadership isn't a personal attribute; it's a system's failure or success. In this thought-provoking conversation, systems thinker and leadership coach Tyler Clapp joins me to explore the deeper structures that enable or hinder a leader's success.
We discuss how a leader's discernment operating system, the way they recognize signals and form conclusions, is a system that can be upgraded. We connect this to my work on Resilience Anchors (self-esteem, purpose, values), and how these internal systems form the foundation of a leader's ability to pivot and adapt with confidence.
If you're ready to move beyond surface-level leadership tips and understand the underlying mechanics of what makes a leader truly resilient and effective, this is the episode for you.
Discover:
► The difference between a "personal failure" and a "systems failure" in leadership.
► How to build the "resilience anchors" needed to navigate ambiguity.
► The "put your oxygen mask on first" principle for leaders.
► A powerful story about how a simple change from a CEO shifted an entire company culture.
► The crucial link between a leader's internal resilience and their team's performance.

As a leader, do you freeze when racialized conflict or microaggressions occur on your team? This leadership paralysis, driven by fear of saying the wrong thing, is one of the biggest risks to psychological safety and employee retention. Good intentions don't prevent harm; prepared leadership does.
In this essential session, I draw on my 28 years as a conflict analyst to provide a clear, repeatable protocol for navigating these complex situations. Stop defaulting to avoidance or "colorblind" leadership traps and start building real resilience.
You will learn:
► The three common leadership traps (The Colorblind, The Eggshell, The Savior) and how to avoid them.
► The 4 Pillars of a Resilient Response: Recognize, Respond, Rebuild, and Reinforce.
► A step-by-step "Fire Response Protocol" to interrupt harm in the moment.
► Why silence is never neutral and how your employees interpret it.
This is a must-watch for any leader, manager, or HR professional committed to creating a truly inclusive and psychologically safe workplace.

Surprised by the need to articulate psychotherapy plainly, Gurpreet replied, "I listen to people talk about what makes them sad, afraid, excited, and happy. Then I help them figure out how they can be even happier." Her daughter summarized it perfectly: "So, you help people be happy." Gurpreet's journey revolves around fostering happiness and emotional resilience. Armed with a doctorate in education and counselling psychology and 17 years of experience in mental health, she thrives on exploring the intersections between counselling, Eastern philosophies, and quantum mechanics. She highlights that relational leaders treat their team members with integrity, respect, and compassion, focusing on their well-being and supporting their growth.
The podcast concludes with an invitation for listeners to assess their own wellness competencies as leaders, identify areas for growth, and embrace the opportunity to become relational leaders. Have you been making career-limiting choices? I was having a conversation with my daughter Delly many years ago and she started talking about colleagues who were making career-limiting choices that would define how their careers progress and that would ultimately limit their opportunities to attain the respect and fluidity of movement many aspire in the corporate arena. I want to share my excitement with you about the launch of my 6th book. This book has been in the incubator of my mind for quite some time. It is meant to expand our lenses about the teaching and coaching of wellness competencies. I use competencies because we know they can be learned and improved upon. You will note that we can always work on our bodies, our minds and attitudes to attain optimal well-being. The same concept is presented in the WIS Method, the nine-dimensional framework that expounds on the wellness mindset and teaching. This book is a resource for coach trainers, instructors, facilitators, wellness practitioners and other professionals looking to marry the social determinants of health to coaching and teaching. It also provides some nuggets for leaders on how to lead wellness at work and strategies for organizational and workplace wellness. I am happy and excited that this book took so long. It was meant to take time and be birthed at this time when our health and wellness are in such jeopardy. You can pick up a copy of the book Here

I have been noticing that some key aspects of DEI in relation to the health and well-being of those who are being impacted by exclusion, microinequities, microaggression, and racism are not being addressed in the regular literature. As we march on the journey of diversity, inclusion and equity, it becomes very important that we do not squander the fight with trivialities. If someone at work doesn't like you, it may because of your behaviour, volume, attitude or even that you are disrespectful. Sometimes we don't like ourselves yet we expect others to like us. Ask yourself, would you be a friend to yourself? Do you like yourself? if you can't answer this question or find yourself avoiding the question altogether, then you may not think that you are likeable. If you want others to like you then do a self-assessment and come up with a couple of things you need to change for you to like yourself and your own company better. The answer to why co-works don't like you may be something you are doing or not doing or maybe pointing you to an area of growth in yourself. Focus on that and seek help to improve your interpersonal skills, your work output or your interactions with others at work. I know, it is so much easier to say it's because of the colour of your skin, hair texture, height, gender, attitude, or sexual orientation but I want to challenge you to dig a bit deeper and do your own self-assessment. Let me know what you find out. Also, we can never like everyone or have everyone like us so give yourself a break. Listen to this episode and reflect. Join the wellness competency teaching and emotional wellness cleanse at www.interpersonalwellness.com
When we accept that we are working in a diverse environment, we realize that our ethnic foods though delicious to us may have smells and odours that are uncommon and unpleasant for others not used to them. You know what they say: "One man's medicine is another's poison". Let's be smart and not put others in uncomfortable situations. Keep exotic foods out of the office. Leave them for home and with friends, for those special "potluck office days". I don't believe the reason your co-worker leaves the office when you eat your ethnic food in the adjacent cubicle is a sign of racism. It may very well be that the spices and blend of spices may be making them queasy, nauseated, lightheaded or worst. Remember that some co-workers may be undergoing cancer treatment, are on medications that make them sensitive to strong smells, are pregnant, or may have allergies. Be kind to yourself and others. While you may be accustomed to the smells and think them wonderful, they may be new and overpowering to others. Remember most workplaces have a scent-free workspace policy. We usually recommend that our client organizations add strong-smelling foods to their scent-free policy as part of workplace health and wellness strategy. Let's continue to look for more ways to promote interpersonal wellness at work.

Have you ever heard someone say something such as that's your interpretation"? Have you ever wondered what they meant by that? Well, there is some truth to it. As we work to develop resilient workplaces in the new world of work, it is very important that we ensure we get rid of old anchors that are no longer serving us and develop a new resilient mindset with anchors that are innovative and forward-thinking. We need to engage in powerful and meaningful discussions, expand our world view and watch ourselves that we are not being too emotionally fragile, limiting our ability to engage in critical conversations that help us learn, teach and grow. Let's talk about how we can reframe these anchors and enhance vibrant dialogues that will make our workplace a warm inviting place where employees want to come to work and be a part of. In a culture where being first is celebrated, being a winner at all cost sometimes means cheating, taking credit for other’s work, speaking first and over others, advocating your point of view, selling ourselves, embellishing the resume to get shortlisted for the interview, or winning the competition by diminishing others’ achievements, one can easily forget the mental health benefits of integrity at work. Low or inconsistent acts of integrity can make the workplace feel like a harsh, psychologically unsafe place to be.

Are there changes in your office schedule or office hours? If not, you may be one of the very few people who are not experiencing changes in their work lives.
Most of us experienced massive changes in our work schedules and office hours as we moved to remote work during the 2020 global pandemic. It took many months of adjustments to create a new rhythm and pace that we have become accustomed to, and now it’s time to transition back.
I would love to hear what is going on for you. I have launched a Linkedin Live Show Wednesdays at 12:00 pm, called “Office Hours” and I would love to hear what you are concerned about, are looking forward to and maybe dreading. Join the show here:https://www.linkedin.com/in/joyceodidison/ Also join me on Clubhouse to discuss the show:https://www.clubhouse.com/club/coach-velocity-school-of
Have you ever failed at something?
Did you stop and take some time to evaluate why you failed?
I want to talk about why we fail at work. I believe we fail because we get cocky when we believe we no longer need our practice to move our skill levels into the realm of competence. Sometimes we let our guard down and failure introduces itself to us. It is a common belief that failure is something that happens to us. No!... Have a listen and leave me a voice message.
This morning I led a class of leaders in the foundations of leadership coaching course. It is a course I teach every week, as more leaders are recognizing that they need a different way to approach employees to promote psychological safety at work, as we advance to a hybrid workplace.
As the rate of mental health and autoimmune diseases becomes more prevalent among employees, leaders must change the way they engage, relate, and communicate with employees, and coaching is a powerful strategy to do so.
If you are interested in learning any of these skills, I am offering free access to this coaching course for my readers who are curious about accelerating their relational skills, as we quickly transition from remote work to having more employees back in the workplace.
If you are curious about bringing the Relational Leadership Coaching program to your workplace, contact me.
Don't forget to smile and relax this weekend. It was a busy week but you got through it.

When we develop competencies, they become part of our characteristics. Competencies flow out of us without effort or a lot of thinking on our part. There is a way to build skills into competencies. This is my favourite part of training and development, the work that I have done for 24 years. I love to see people develop a skill or competency.
Do you know that by building relational currency you can foster goodwill among your team and boost your social bank account? Yes, this is where things like participation and collaboration come from. As I reflect on the business of my week, the things that stand out are those of interpersonal equity. Those that allow people to feel empowered and valued at work. Besides the business of my week, the issues of bullying, harassment, and discrimination that my clients are facing are the most impactful.

A leader experiences a junior leader's behaviour as disrespectful and rude and before she can deal with it the junior leader complains that her employee is being rude and disrespectful. I have to laugh sometimes. Listen to how I encouraged her to have a critical conversation and create some insights for the junior leader that would help both their situations. Have a listen. Did you know that employees still take paper clips home from work every day? Don't worry! They take more than paperclips home too. You see, employees take all the hardships and misery they face at work home. Especially racialized employees who feel isolated. They create a safe place at home to share their common experiences. Employees are tired of being passed over, dismissed, dehumanized and ignored because of their race, gender, ethnicity or orientation. What happens when a leader is emotionally immature? They are not concerned about their legacy. They live for the moment, they do what feels right in the moment, they practice favoritism, they ignore how their attitudes aggravate the employees they lead. Immature leaders are the cause of a lot of employees' frustration, lack of equity, discrimination, and racism at work. I'm on a quest to help clean up some of the bad things happening at work.
